What followed was an extensive recovery process for both body and mind that took a long time, and kept rearing its head, even when Pete thought it was over. It was also never helped by the fact that he is yet to receive an apology from the driver. In this episode he shares:- What his initial physical recovery was like- The alignment of personality and motivation levels to appropriate physiotherapists and treatment team- The people in his life who helped and he wasn't expecting it- how his work supported him- The importance of having someone check in with his wife when she was struggling- The important lesson about patience he was given by a friend- Why you have to celebrate the positives or you'll fail- How to widen your window of tolerance- How his kids shined during his recovery- How dangerously bad his PTSD got- The moment he event intro therapy and realised he needed help- How his insurance agency made his PTSD worse- The 3 activities he did to help strengthen his mind and help him through his PTSD- The post trauma growth he has experienced- Why being a hero to yourself can actually help others Key Quotes“I thought about PTSD as a punchline in a joke. I'm embarrassed to say that that's how it was, but it was and I have learnt my lesson.”“I was becoming aware of me being angrier at my kids and wife.”“There are gonna be times where you are so frustrated and in so much pain that it's not worth it” You can get involved with the podcast onlineOn facebook in our community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/challengesthatchangeusOr on Instagram: @challengesthatchangeusIf you want to contact the podcast, email us here: support@challengesthatchangeus.comOr check out our website: www.Challengesthatchangeus.comIf you want to find out more about what Ali does, check out her business via the website:http://www.trialtitudeperformance.com.auFor her other business you can find it through the websites: www.altitudefitnessarmidale.com.au Hosted on Acast. THE TALE OF BILLY O'C, 100min,. Ireland Directed by Pete Harris In 1970s rural Ireland, the murderer of an IRA safe house operative, must be stopped before executing his master plan. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550225274205 https://www.instagram.com/the_tale_of_billy_oc/ Get to know the filmmaker: When I first started coming to Ireland from Australia over eight years ago I was swept up in the romantic mystique of the land and people like most tourists. There's a magical quality about the place with its music, castles, cosy pubs and dramatic landscapes that just make you want to swing a pint and befriend people. After spending a lot more time here I've noticed in myself that I'm starting to take that first impression for granted like the locals do, so I wanted to make this film sooner rather than later to try to capture that original feeling of mystique and warmth in the style of the movie. This being my debut film, I didn't want to confuse things with lots of mad action scenes and VFX and just wanted to concentrate on telling a compelling story. Personally, I feel that a lot of modern films have become too much about the spectacle and telling a unique and interesting story still holds a lot of importance for audiences and that can often be overlooked. So, I really tried to strip it back to a story that isn't predictable, and I wanted to avoid having the audience feel like they've seen this story in some form before, by keeping you wondering what's going to happen next. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS). 'I'm with my main man' says Bruce of Pete Harris in 1975. That's why the media couldn't get anywhere near him at the iconic Hammersmith '75 concert. Pete was a confident and self-assured sales rep for HP Sauce at the time, but had managed to talk his way into Bruce's inner circle on the day of Bruce's first and historic overseas concert with the help of an oversized jar of pickled onions! Again in 1981, Pete hung out with Bruce and the band on the River tour. A larger than life character, Pete shares some of his personal stories with Jeff and Dan whilst Rosie searches around the kitchen for Pete's chosen drink of Vimto and a peculiar special bread request. Well, it isn't theft, Stellan Nieves tells himself, not when you're stealing from a crook. Stellan, a married mid-twenties Chicago accountant, dreams of a new life free from a spiteful wife and two unruly young daughters. His salvation comes by way of mobster Dusan “Squeezebox” Kovačević. Stellan stumbles onto a cache of $2.1 million hidden beneath loose floorboards at Squeezebox's warehouse. He at first resists the temptation, but it proves too tempting. He plots out his theft, and, under the cover of darkness, bolts with the money in his trunk. Ditching his sensible Brooks Brothers suits and wingtip Oxfords, Stellan resurfaces in a small college town in Vermont. Certain no one would ever look for him there, he reinvents himself as Pete Harris, with a beard, wire frame eyeglasses, jeans, plaid shirts, hiking boots, and a pickup truck. A vengeful Squeezebox becomes apoplectic at the theft. He hunts manically for Stellan but Federal indictments put an end to his search. Charged under the RICO Act, he receives a 60-year sentence. His forever home will be a 6'x 8'cell in a small federal prison. The only way Squeezebox will ever leave prison is in a pine box. Time passes, and serendipity plays her hand. While taking courses at the local college, a bulletin board notice seeking volunteers to teach English and math classes at the nearby prison catches Pete's attention. He mulls it over. Why not? He can spare the few hours. The tension is palpable as the two men unexpectedly face each other across a small table in the prison waiting room. Will this chance meeting lead to their complete undoing, transformational redemption, or none of the above? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We've got some seriously great content this week from all kinds of different storytellers:) Azalia Palma (wife of another USSE storyteller Ivan Palma) tells a "shocking" story of getting hit by lightning and discovering she's pregnant. Next, musician and 1st time story teller, Pete Harris, told a tale of playing in Miami's rock n' roll music scene back in the day and making some bad women choices that laid him out. After that we had another 1st time storyteller who hit it out of the park. Uncle Scotchy's very own friend and drummer for their band "Juke", Korian Hannah. Korian spun a tale of his father's achievements and also many shortcomings as a father. He got into how he's still discovering people in his family all over the country to this day, and how all that has made him the amazing father that he is now. Closing the show, we had local comic JP Kauer. JP crushed it w his stories of growing up and dealing with bullies. That and how that made him the man he is today both personally and professionally!!!! People, if you did USSE, all you have to support is SHARE! We're trying to add video each week and hopefully have a big announcement for you in the next month or so. Until then, stay Scotchy, my friends!!! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

CW: Child Molestation, Sexual Assault This week on Pod Sematary, Chris & Kelsey are excited to discuss their favorite slasher villain! The Quipping Killer! The Dream Demon! The Springwood Slasher! The Bastard Son of One Hundred Maniacs! The Orangutan Goblin himself: Freddy Krueger! It's a Double Feature of A Nightmare on Elm Street! First up is the 1984 classic! It has the best cop-out of all time because everything happens in dreams. They can do anything! This low-budget flick almost didn't happen but writer/director Wes Craven and producer Bob Shaye wouldn't stop until it was made and the world is all the better for it! Plus, will someone please analyze Kelsey's recurring nightmare? Then it's the 2010 disappointment... Perhaps surprisingly, we'd really like to see a good Nightmare reboot, but boy did we not get one here. Unlike the Thing premakequel, which we decided was simply unnecessary, this remake is a wasted opportunity to reinvigorate the beloved franchise. Two is a famously bad age for toddlers, but it seems to be a prime number for a reading series marking a rite of passage—in this case, the celebration this past Wednesday of the Happy Ending Music and Reading Series’ two-year anniversary at Joe’s Pub.  Host and curator Amanda Stern called the evening “Old Friends/New Friends” and invited as readers Nelly Reifler and A.M. Homes—her first two guests when she started the series at a Chinatown bar seven years ago. Both women read stories that might be called modern fables. Reifler’s “Formica Dinette” was written for the Web site Underwater New York, which collects writing and art inspired by the waterways around New York City (take that, James Cameron). In this darkly comic piece (the actual dinette is somewhere in the East River) the Formica company somehow joins with a survivalist family gearing up for the final battle, and kitchen redesign is linked to the rehabilitation of a possessed parent. A.M. Homes’ untitled piece, written for her friend, the English painter Rachel Whiteread, shares some characteristics with its protagonist, a shapeshifter who treats sick buildings. It is a protean, lyrical work in which the woman moves through her day adapting her body to each circumstance she encounters. And she’s given to randomly sprouting feathers, which I take to be a metaphor for writing itself—the sharp feathery thing that makes its way to the surface and lets the possessor take wing. The Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Cunningham, who represented “New Friends” on the program, and whose work is often as lyrical and complex as a Beethoven sonata, seemed to be channeling Norman Mailer, who he later cited, in a passage from his new novel “By Nightfall.”  In a glimpse of the early courtship of the married couple whose story the novel tells, Pete Harris is dazzled by the opulent gentility of his girlfriend Rebecca’s Virginia home, and is equally titillated by tales of the sexual adventures of her sister. (Click on the link above to hear selections from the evening’s readings.) Happy Ending’s trademark (other than good literature read in good company) is host Stern’s insistence that her authors take a risk on stage. This trio met the challenge inventively. Reifler translated randomly selected passages of T.S. Eliot’s “The Wasteland” into an imaginary language, Idiga. A.M. Homes courted four volunteers from the audience using “speed dating” techniques from various Internet sites. (Hint, ask outrageous questions designed to reveal your candidate’s personality: “Do you think of chocolate as part of the food triangle?”; “Do you have a flat side?”; If you were a stalker, would you be a good one?”).  Cunningham, whose novel “The Hours” drew on the life of Virginia Woolf, offered a five-minute (all right, eight minute) history of the novel, concluding that rumors of its death have been greatly exaggerated, and quoting Mailer, who once told a panel audience, with characteristic brio, that “The novel will be at your funeral.” Listen to Cunningham’s own version of “Cliff’s Notes” here: The musical guests for the evening were Thomas Bartlett and Sam Amidon, who offered up an eclectic mix of folk tunes, original songs, and pop standards, distinguished by fragile vocals that almost seemed to morph into the accompanying instruments. Hear their first set here:     Bon Mots "Mother may be disoriented mentally and spatially. This is just one more reason we suggest timing Mother’s emergence with the kitchen re-do."—Nelly Reifler, “Formica Dinette”.  "She’s a navigator, a mover, a shifter. She’s flown as a gull over the ocean, she’s dived deep as a whale, she spent an afternoon as a jellyfish, floating, as an evergreen with the breeze tickling her skin…She’s in constant motion, trying to figure out what comes next."—Reader A.M. Homes "If you were young Pete Harris, you felt the modesty of it eroding you, depopulating you. All those little satisfactions, and no big dangerous ones."—Michael Cunningham, “By Nightfall.” "The novel is born as a sort of lower form of entertainment, not unlike 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.'”—Michael Cunningham’s history of the novel in five minutes.
