Sam Amidon is a folk fiddler, multi-instrumentalist, and singer from New England who now lives in Old England. He's become known for his inventive and often surprising arrangements of folk songs from both sides of the Atlantic. But he's also someone who refuses to stay in his lane. So you could call his new album, Salt River, a collection of folk songs - if your definition of folk song is broad enough. Sam Amidon and multi-instrumentalist Chris Vatalaro expand folk tunes – shape note anthems, murder ballads, traditional songs - and play in-studio. Set list: 1. Three Five 2. Golden Willow Tree 3. I'm On My Journey Home

Galway artist Niamh Regan released her second album Come As You Are on May 31. On this episode we talk through all 10 of its tracks, as well as a not-very-secret hidden track, plus some of the fun things that she's experienced since releasing debut album Hemet in 2020. -- From the press release: Since its release, Niamh has embarked on headline tours from Ireland, to UK, Australia, Spain + more. Pairing this with many festivals and a variety of support opportunities with artist such as CMAT, Villagers, John Grant, SOAK, Patrick Watson, Sam Amidon, Cormac Begley, and Sorcha Richardson. In between her performances, Niamh began to write her second record in Attica Studios with producer Tommy McLaughlin. She says, ‘I arrived in Donegal to meet Tommy for the first time with a bunch of demos, half-baked ideas and feeling not ready, it was scary. But I'm so glad that I did it that way. Trusted the process and came into the studio with the intention of capturing exactly where I was with it all and Tommy helped me build from there.' And here we are, with the release of that second album, titled ‘Come As You Are'. It's an album full of acutely observed vulnerabilities and introspection. Its themes are the issues that many of us find loom large in the small hours: questions of self-doubt, uncertainty about your life's direction, whether relationships are flourishing in the way you'd hoped and determining priorities. “A lot of it is about being in your late twenties and kind of realising we're all running out of time,” she ponders. “I'd have bouts of massive self-belief in the studio, and then in the next breath I would be like, ‘This is the worst piece of music I could have even imagined.' It was a rollercoaster. But through that I found self-acceptance; this is where I'm at and making peace with that. That's what the album essentially is, just making peace with where I'm at and being realistic with myself.” -- Niamh Regan tour dates: June 13: Windmill Live Show w/James Vincent McMorrow, Dublin (solo) June 16: Doolin Folk Festival (full band) July 16: Galway International Arts Festival (full band) July 25: Song Room, Wexford (solo) August 2: All Together Now August 12: Kilkenny Arts Festival (solo) August 17: Electric Picnic (solo) November 14: Cyprus Avenue, Cork (full band) November 15: Liberty Hall Theatre, Dublin (full band) -- Buy Niamh Regan - Come As You Are: https://niamhregan.bandcamp.com/album/come-as-you-are

This week's guest is Evan Woodle. I was turned onto Evan's playing through a previous guest of the podcast, Sheridan Riley of the band Alvvays. Evan got his start in the internationally acclaimed Roosevelt High School jazz program in Seattle before going on to earn a Jazz Studies degree from the University of Washington. Go huskies. Evan has toured the world with countless acts, but remains an ambassador for the Seattle Jazz Scene. He maintains a private drum studio, works with local jazz institution Origin Arts, and is one of the co-founders and current organizers of the Racer Sessions, a bimonthly free-improvisation series and a forum for cutting-edge composers and performers. I am a huge fan of his playing, knowledge, and perspective on music so I hope you enjoy the 5 records that helped shape Evan Woodle into the drummer he is today. Cheers! A few weeks ago, Myself and Andrea took a day trip to Galway city to visit the Black Gate Cultural Centre. In 2020 both Andrea and I were big champions of Niamh Regan's debut album Hemet which was released on Black Gate's label, Indeed, we talked to Niamh on the show that summer, and the record went onto receive a Choice Music Prize nomination last year. Last year the Black Gate venue was streaming live concerts from its small venue space, and this week, it will debut its TV show on TG4 - called Cumasc: Seisiúin sa Black Gate, the show pairs up disparate musicians for a series of collaborative days resulting in performances in the Black Gate. There are 12 episodes of Cumasc featuring the likes of Rhiannon Giddens / Róisín Elsafty and Francesco Turrisi, Rachael Lavelle and Peter Broderick, Seamus Begley and Junior Brother, Jinx Lennon and The Mary Wallopers, Sam Amidon and Siobhán Peoples, Anna Mullarkey and David Kitt's New Jackson and much more. Cumasc is available to watch on the TG4 player from today, before TV broadcast on February 26th. So, Black Gate - is it a label? Is it venue? Is it wine bar? Is it a recording studio? Well, it's a bit of everything. I've always thought that multi-use spaces are the way forward in terms of music and entertainment venues, and when it comes with wine and a cheese board too, well, we thought we better go down to Galway and have a look for ourselves. So Andrea and I did just that, and it just happened to arrive on Black Gate's fifth birthday. We spoke to Niamh Regan once again, talked to the director of Cumasc Mia Mullarkey, as well as her little sister, the musician Anna Mullarkey, who appeared on the show with David Kitt and wrote the theme song. And we met the people behind the Black Gate including Co-owner Peadar King to hear about how it all came together and their plans for the space, and we'll hear a bit from one of their upcoming releases too from Rodney Owl. The London-based Vermont-born singer/fiddler/banjoist/guitarist and scion of a family of shape-note singers, Sam Amidon, has a reputation for having collected, re-imagined, and performed American traditional tunes or other folk music, in addition to collaborations with Kronos Quartet and composer Nico Muhly. In spring of 2017, Amidon released his first album of original music, which is an experiment in trying out the Appalachian music he loves, as well as "improvisation, beats, Don Cherry, Vermont, London." Sam Amidon joins us live to play songs from that record, The Following Mountain. (From the Archives, 2017.)
Sam Amidon is one of the most open minded artists I know. Right away I was struck not only by his beautiful music, I was also amazed by the vast range of things he welcomes into his world. Every Sam Amidon album is a winner. They build on top of each other and yet each … Continue reading Sam Amidon

While the Summer of Love is about to unfold across the Atlantic, life in 1967 isn’t so easy for a young would-be musician in London’s shabby Charing Cross Road. Yet from this modest starting point, David Mitchell builds a joyful fictional biography of a band that will take the world by storm. Utopia Avenue is the finest prog-folk band you have never heard of, and the novel of the same name is a stylish romp through the rags-to-riches lives of drummer Griff, singer Elf, guitarist Jasper and bass player Dean. Organised around the song titles of the band’s albums, Utopia Avenue's clever structure also gives it a powerful narrative drive – with added zest from a series of cheeky cameo appearances by real-life rock legends including David Bowie and Leonard Cohen. Funny, whip-smart and occasionally veering into the fantastical, it is one of the most compellingly entertaining reads of 2020. Join Mitchell in this event recorded live at the 2020 Book Festival as he shares his notes with folk singer and musician Sam Amidon, who also plays some of his most recent music.
On this edition for Sunday, April 18, recent shootings and the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial reignite debate over police reform, and a conversation with singer-songwriter and musician Sam Amidon.

Martha Wainwright is a Canadian-American singer and songwriter born in New York City to musicians Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and her brother is Rufus Wainwright.
Singer/song writer/multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon is a 100% completely unique and original musical specimen. Born and raised in Brattleboro, VT he presents music that is a highly realized synthesis of his many disparate influences: folk music, free jazz, music concrete, performance art, indie rock, etc etc etc. The list of descriptions could last forever, but one thing is sure: he sounds unlike anyone I've ever heard and his music is something that I've been returning to time and time again for the past decade. Please enjoy an hour with a true American original.
We're joined in the studio by Katie Stelmanis from Austra, and Vermont folk singer Sam Amidon. And on Singles Club, we rate new tracks by Polica, Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu, and Doldrums
This week's entry was inspired by a covers infused dinner Noise Pop is putting on with local SF supper club graffEats. The chef is going to prepare dishes that are covers of famous chef's dishes, with which Noise Pop will pair cover songs. So every song in this episode is a cover. Taking it a step further Dawson and the team explore the different ways a cover can be done. To gain some insight Jesse and Dawson speak with Josh Modell, A.V. Club's Editor-in-Chief, about his fantastic Undercover series.
