Well, that's about it for the story of planet Earth, poor Earth, reduced to not much more than a piece of burnt coal. But, as Deb Olin Unferth shows in her latest electrifying novel, life and love persist, even in the most unexpected, inhospitable places. Two women meet on a beach of artificial sand. One was raised in a pod in the ocean and the other may or may not be a robot. Their love—or any love—seems so unlikely. Earth is severely depopulated. Some people have given up, gone off to Mars. Others pursue eternal life as digital code. And yet others, like Dylan and Melanie, are holdouts—and some of those holdouts are constructing a vast molecular collection in hopes that a future person may be alive to make a new Earth. Foolhardy? Misguided? Quixotic? Probably. But what can a human (or a robot) do?By the end of Unferth's wild, poetic, revelatory, and slyly philosophical novel, the reader has traveled to the very edges of the cosmos as a “soul globule” and between grains of sand as a microscopic tardigrade. A slim book tackling big questions (is all matter conscious? will we tech ourselves into salvation, or out of existence?), Earth 7 (Graywolf Press 2026) is a poignant inquiry into death, mourning, and indefatigable life, the most exhilarating work to date by one of our most original and beloved writers. Deb Olin Unferth is the author of seven books, including Barn 8 and Wait Till You See Me Dance. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and four Pushcart Prizes, and was a National Books Critics Circle Award finalist. Her work has appeared in Harper's, The Paris Review, Granta, and McSweeney's. She's a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches for the Michener Center, the New Writers' Project, and she also directs the Pen City Writers, the prison creative-writing program at a south Texas penitentiary. Recommended Books: Victor Pelevin, Omon Ra Jean Stafford, A Mother in History Tanya Tagaq, Split Tooth Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Professor at Ithaca College. He writes criticism on contemporary global literatures. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature, is published with Bloomsbury Publishing. Solomon talks about wisdom and justice.Jesus tells us people will persecute us thinking they are doing God's work.PASSAGE OF THE DAY 97"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good words and glorify your Father in heaven."Matthew 5: 16
The Rebbe discusses how Balak and Bilam's intentions to curse Israel reveal a misunderstanding of divine protection. It contrasts the superficial appearance of power with the true inner strength that emerges from a connection to God's will, demonstrating how challenges can fortify rather than harm. https://www.torahrecordings.com/likutei-sichos/002/008_002
Why do we feel directionless or disconnected from what matters most? Jesus teaches, it's not because God is silent—but because we're tuned to competing voices that lead us away from life. This teaching is about learning to discern those voices, quiet the noise, and rediscover the path that leads to something real, whole, and life-giving. Text John 10

There is some idea now that any woman with a loving husband wants sex. This could not be less true. Women may not want sex for all kinds of reasons that have zero to do with their husbands. They may be tired or stressed NO MATTER HOW MUCH HE DOES IN THE HOUSE (including 100% of the chores which I've seen many times), they may just have lower drives (remember there's a normal distribution of most every trait), they may have depression or anxiety, they may be older and at a changed hormonal stage, they may have a trauma history, they may be on medications that impact drive like SSRI's (or GLP-1 blockers as new research shows), they may have a condition with fatigue as a symptom like anemia or of course chronic fatigue. In fact, it's ANTI FEMINIST to say that a woman's drive would be solely due to a man, as women are not a purely reactive monolith. They are individuals with their OWN ISSUES AND PREFERENCES!My newest venture, including ALL BRAND NEW POSTS EVERY DAY: https://buymeacoffee.com/drpsychmom/postsJoin my awesome Midlife Women's Group here: drpsychmom.com/mwgTo get over 200 more episodes, most recently "You Don't Have To Attend Every Argument You're Invited To," subscribe here! https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/drpsychmomshow/subscribe For my secret Facebook group, the "best money I've ever spent" according to numerous members: https://www.facebook.com/groups/drpsychmomFor coaching from DPM, visit https://www.drpsychmom.com/coaching/For therapy or coaching, contact us at https://www.bestlifebehavioralhealth.com/

Andrews - Dr. Andrews is the author of *InnerShift: Spiritual Care in the Age of Distraction* and *Just Sayin': A Faithful Brother's Guide to Dating with Purpose, Pace & Peace*. Rather than offering simple advice, he tackles real-life challenges—such as aimless relationships, unstructured faith, and misaligned success—and brings fresh perspective with insight and honesty. We discussed the pitfalls of misguided relationship advice and how it can create confusion by steering people in the wrong direction. We'll also explore some common misunderstandings between men and women and consider the consequences that often result from these miscommunicationsFor more information:Instagram: @justsayinTikTok: @justsayinYouTube: @justsayindrjBuy the book: https://innershift360.com/just-sayin Take the Dating ID Quiz: https://innershift360.com/datin-id-quizSend us Fan MailMen Speaking Out...Talking to reveal, not conceal! menspeakingout.com

The NFL approved Jacksonville's temporary move to Orlando's Camping World Stadium in 2027, and it was the best of not many options for the Jaguars. A 2022 decision from the Supreme Court continues to sow confusion and misguided claims four years later. Today, we're revisiting our conversation on the Kennedy v. Bremerton decision, where the Court ruled for a public school official and abandoned long-standing Establishment Clause protections in ways that harm the religious freedom rights of students. Hear Amanda and Holly react right after this decision and ponder just what, exactly, would actually constitute "coercion" for this Court. The Supreme Court did not overrule the previous school prayer cases with the decision, but it did gut some of the consensus that protects the religious liberty rights of everyone at public schools. This conversation was recorded in front of a live audience on June 29, 2022, and was first released July 7, 2022. SHOW NOTES Segment 1 (starting at 02:57): Not solving a problem, but creating one: Kennedy v. Bremerton decision You can read the Bremerton opinion here, written by Justice Neil Gorsuch. Justice Sonia Sotomayor's dissenting opinion includes photos of the prayer practice at issue (see pages 9 and 10 of the dissent, which are on pages 49 and 50 of the opinion PDF document). We released three podcasts on this case: We previewed the case in April 2022 in Episode 14 of Season 3 in an episode titled "#NoPrayToPlay." We recapped the oral arguments in Episode 15 of that same season: "The coach is the loudspeaker and the field is his classroom: Recapping the arguments in Kennedy v. Bremerton" We released this episode as our season 3 finale. The full episode is titled "Not solving a problem, but creating one: Dissecting the Kennedy v. Bremerton decision" Segment 2 (starting at 26:51): Concluding thoughts For all of BJC's resources on this case, visit BJConline.org/Bremerton. Protein in DietIf you've been to the grocery store lately, it is hard to miss the new diet fad — protein. It is being added to everything from milk to ramen to popcorn to cereal to sports drinks. Last week, Buffalo Wild Wings released a wing-flavored protein-filled espresso martini that they're calling "Espresso Proteini." But what does the science say about how much protein we actually need in our diets? Is this filling a nutritional need or is it just another food craze? The recently-revised food pyramid from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department emphasizes protein, as well as dairy, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables as the largest categories of our diet. Previously, protein was suggested in smaller portions. We'll start Thursday's "Sound of Ideas" by talking protein and other questions about a healthy diet. Guest:- Kristi Artz, M.D., Vice President & Christopher M. and Sara H. Connor Chair in Integrative Health, University Hospitals Connor Whole Health Geauga County Maple FestivalNext in the "Sound of Ideas," we'll switch from protein to another important food group — sugar, specifically maple syrup and the people who produce it. Geauga County is the top maple syrup producer in Ohio and is celebrating its 100th Maple Festival next month. Maple syrup is the focus of this installment of our food series, "The Menu," which is produced in collaboration with Cleveland Magazine, which has featured reporting on maple syrup production as well as the Geauga County Maple Festival. Guests:- Tim Cermak, Maple Syrup Farmer, Sugarbush Creek Farm- Marc Burr, Emcee & Board Member, Geauga County Maple Festival & Owner, Potti & Burr Funeral Homes
3. Guest Charles Burton critiques Canada's decision to import Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for tariff reductions. He warns of Chinese influence operations, security risks, and Canada's misguided shift toward economic dependence on Beijing. (4)1920 TEXAS
Have you ever started working on a puzzle and realized you had the whole picture wrong and needed to start over again? Well, our guest thinks that we’ve been so focused on ‘managing tons’ of emissions, with regulatory and accounting nightmares like offsets, that we’ve lost sight of the goal of developing a new economic system built on a different energy platform. Given the political muscle of the oil, now energy, companies, the desire to move incrementally into more green energy alternatives may be understandable. This moment, though, may be the time, with the numbers getting even worse, to jettison the old model of multilateral agreements and start putting green energy asset holders in the driver’s seat. It’s not an easy assignment, but Jessica Green, our guest, a Professor in the Department of Political Science and in the School of the Environment at the University of Toronto and the author of “Existential Politics: Why Global Climate Institutions are Failing and How to Fix Them,” explains why the transition in thinking is critical at this stage.
Pastor Lloyd has an eye on First Samuel four today. God is about to remove His presence from the nation of Israel. Sounds severe doesn't it, and it is! But what would lead the Lord to do this? We'll look into that together and learn that it comes down to misguided faith.

When God makes a promise, you can be sure He'll keep His Word. And in First Samuel four, God is about to come through on a promise He made in chapter three. He's going to judge Eli and deal with his two sons.
A new MP3 sermon from Grace Reformed Baptist of Pine Bush is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Misguided Comfort Subtitle: The Book of Job Speaker: Paul Gordon Broadcaster: Grace Reformed Baptist of Pine Bush Event: Sunday School Date: 3/15/2026 Bible: Job 4-5 Length: 55 min.
The sermon explores the flawed comfort offered by Eliphaz to Job, highlighting how well-intentioned but misguided theological principles—rooted in a rigid doctrine of retribution—fail to address the depth of human suffering with empathy or grace. While Eliphaz begins with a veneer of tact and cites scriptural wisdom, his approach reduces suffering to divine punishment for hidden sin, ignoring Job's genuine anguish and the complexity of divine sovereignty. The preacher contrasts this with the true nature of God's character—marked by compassion, faithfulness, and redemptive purpose—emphasizing that suffering is not always a result of personal failure but can be a means of deeper spiritual growth and divine revelation. Ultimately, the message calls for a theology that prioritizes people over principles, listening over lecturing, and the heart of God over rigid formulas, urging believers to comfort others not with quick answers, but with presence, humility, and love that mirrors Christ's own ministry.

What if the version of strength most men were handed is quietly breaking them?In this deep and honest conversation, Brandon Clift interviews Trey Tucker, founder of Rugged Counseling and author of Tough Enough, a book written specifically for men in their twenties who feel stuck, drifting, or disconnected.Trey opens up about the sudden death of his father and how he navigated grief without shutting down emotionally. He shares the unconventional approach he used to process loss and how it shaped his model of therapy today.Together, they explore:• Why many men struggle with grief • The biological differences in how men and women process stress • Why traditional therapy can leave men stuck in awareness without action • The rise of red pill culture and why it initially feels empowering • Why Gen Z men are increasingly unmotivated at work • The dangerous trend of “playing it safe” • The need for mentorship and modern rites of passage • Why men need vision, accountability, and action • The difference between repression and strengthTrey argues that masculinity itself is not the problem. Misguided expression is.Instead of eliminating grit, dominance, or ambition, he calls men to integrate emotional awareness with decisive action. This episode is for:Men in their twenties who feel directionlessFathers raising sons in a confusing cultural momentLeaders managing disengaged young menAnyone wondering if therapy could be more effective for menStrength is not the absence of emotion. Charles Stewart, chief executive of Sotheby's, joins the Big Boss Interview and discusses the scrutiny facing the art market over money laundering, the growth of digital art and NFTs, the expansion of sports collectibles, and how the conflict in the Middle East could affect the industry.Stewart, who previously served as chief executive of a small bank before joining Sotheby's, describes the characterisation of the industry as working with illicit money as a “misjudged notion”. He argues the company's client base consists largely of established collectors, museum trustees and philanthropists who buy works to live with them rather than to obscure wealth.Russian buyers — often cited in discussions about opaque art transactions — represented less than 1% of Sotheby's global business when sanctions were imposed following the invasion of Ukraine, he says, challenging assumptions about the role of Russian money in the market.Geopolitics is also shaping the art market. The Middle East has become an increasingly important region for Sotheby's, with auctions in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi reflecting years of market development across the Gulf. Stewart says the company's immediate priority amid escalating regional tensions is the safety of staff working there, though he notes market reaction to the latest conflict has so far been “somewhat muted”.Stewart notes that countries including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are investing heavily in cultural infrastructure as part of longer-term economic diversification strategies. Institutions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi — open for nearly a decade — and the forthcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi form part of plans to establish new global cultural destinations.Despite these shifts, London remains central to Sotheby's global operations. The company's New Bond Street headquarters reflects more than 280 years of British heritage and the city continues to function as Sotheby's second-largest sales centre after New York. A recent London auction achieved a 100% sell-through rate with bidders from 40 countries, demonstrating sustained international participation despite post-Brexit complications around import and export logistics. The conversation also examines how technology is changing the art market. Stewart argues digital art represents a natural evolution in artistic practice rather than simply a speculative phenomenon linked to the boom and collapse of NFTs. He distinguishes between cryptocurrency speculation, the blockchain technology underlying NFTs, and the broader creative shift as artists adopt digital tools. Sports memorabilia has also become a growing category for Sotheby's. The market now extends beyond historic trophies and medals to include game-worn shirts and collectibles authenticated through technology that can match items to specific moments in matches. Stewart attributes the expansion partly to generational wealth transfer and to younger collectors' interest in pre-owned objects with personal and cultural significance.Presenter: Sean Farrington Producer: Olie D'Albertanson Editor: Henry Jones02:12 - Middle East conflict impact 15:30 - Anti-Money laundering regulations 17:29 - Russian sanctions 19:30 - "Misguided Notion" of art world bad behaviour 23:34 - Digital Art as natural evolution 29:30 - Sports memorabilia growth

Ragavan is founder of the Positive Instigation Coaching Program, which she created to equip leaders to communicate with precision, exercise judgment under pressure, and lead with moral clarity when every word carries consequence. In their discussion, Chitra and Ron unpacked what many called a moment of “casual misogyny.” Were the players in an impossible situation? That's been Ron's premise all along; does Ragavan concur? In the second of the show ... ... Georgia State Rep. Ruwa Román suspended her campaign, pivoting to a state Senate run. Ron analyzed what it means for the Democratic field after feting Rep. Romman and her immense volunteer army and campaign staff.Because this is a Trump presidency, otherwise damning DOJ mishandling of FBI testimony tying Trump to an Epstein victim is 'curiously' missing and that's somehow not front page news. Then, there's (Hillary) Clinton / Epstein dramatics (and clownish antics from Rep. Lauren Boebert) plus a new anti-trans Kansas law that strips that state's trans residents of their dignity on their driver's licenses, and don't think Georgia's bigoted legislators won't purse something similar. We head to the moors to unpack Emerald Fennell's take on Wuthering Heights and ask the question hovering over every adaptation: how far can you stray before you lose the storm? We dig into what's gained, what's flattened, and whether style and provocation have replaced the novel's wild, unruly soul. “Wuthering Heights” is now showing in Malaysian cinemas. Welcome to Day 2796 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – Top 10 Logical Fallacies That Lead to Bad Theology and Misguided Evangelism. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2796 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2796 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website theologyinfive.com. Today's lesson is titled Top 10 Logical Fallacies That Lead to Bad Theology and Misguided Evangelism. Theology and evangelism must be grounded in truth. Scripture calls us to worship God with all our heart, soul, and mind. When Christians lean on faulty reasoning, they twist the Word of God and open the door to error. Logical fallacies are not harmless; they often lead to heresy, false conversions, and a compromised witness. The gospel is too precious to be diluted by sloppy thinking. Here are ten common logical fallacies that regularly poison Christian teaching and outreach, along with why they are so dangerous. 1. Appeal to Emotion God created us with emotions, and they can be powerful tools in responding to His truth. But when emotions become the foundation of a theological claim or evangelistic appeal, the message becomes distorted. Frightening people with hellfire or guilt-tripping them into “saying a prayer” is not preaching the gospel. It is manipulating feelings. This may produce outward responses, but it rarely produces genuine repentance. The Holy Spirit uses the truth of the gospel to convict and transform, not emotional spectacle. 2. Straw Man We are called to represent the truth faithfully, and that includes how we handle opposing views. Creating a caricature of someone else's beliefs just to knock it down is not discernment; it is dishonesty. Saying, “Calvinists believe God delights in sending people to hell,” or “Arminians think they save themselves,” misrepresents those views and violates the command to bear true witness. If we cannot refute what someone actually believes, we have no business opposing it at all. 3. Slippery Slope There is a difference between wise caution and irrational fear. When someone says, “If we allow this doctrinal disagreement, we'll abandon the gospel next,” or “If women teach children, we'll soon have drag queens in the pulpit,” they are not contending for the faith. They are avoiding honest discussion. Scripture warns against compromise, but it also warns against making false accusations. We must examine each issue on its own merit, not use fear tactics to shut down thought. 4. Circular Reasoning The Bible is self-authenticating, but it should not be defended with circular logic. Saying, “The Bible is true because it says it is,” may sound spiritual, but it avoids meaningful engagement with the reliability of God's Word. Scripture invites examination. God has confirmed His Word through history,...
Episode #1093 A lot of men think they're being grounded by staying calm, staying quiet, or keeping the peace, but what if that's not grounded at all? In this episode, Doug and Tim break down how men often collapse emotionally without realizing it, and why that shutdown is just another form of reaction. You'll hear real stories, including a wake-up call from Doug's own marriage, and how what he thought was self-control was actually stonewalling. This isn't about being more stoic or strong. It's about being real, being present, and learning to lead emotionally instead of withdrawing. They explain how men slip into shame, disconnect from their partner, and unknowingly make it all about themselves. You'll learn how to spot the difference between reacting and being grounded, and how to catch yourself before things spiral. The goal isn't perfection. It's about awareness, ownership, and showing up differently. If you've ever felt like you were doing the right thing only to have it backfire, this conversation is worth a listen. It walks you through what's really going on and how to rebuild connection, leadership, and trust step by step.
On Friday's Mark Levin Show, excessive or misdirected compassion in Western societies, especially among progressives, leads to self-destructive policies by prioritizing the needs and feelings of perceived marginalized or external groups over the survival, security, and interests of one's own civilization, ultimately causing its weakening or destruction. That's the radical left and how they coddle Islamists even though it destroys our own country. It's suicidal if we let one more radical Islamist into America or we don't remove those here for the cancer they are spreading. Marxists, Islamists, and the Left deliberately manipulate language as a weapon to advance their agenda against ordinary Americans. Also, Iran is becoming the North Korea of the Middle East. It exists to fund the regime and its police state and military. The people are suffering from a complete lack of civil liberties, a destitute economy, and a nearly non-existent middle class. Like North Korea, it is turning into a country-wide concentration camp. If we do not act decisively, quickly, and overwhelmingly with our military against the top of the regime, Iran will, in fact, build nuclear weapons, as North Korea has despite dozens of agreements over the decades, in which they pledged not to. Any regime that is willing to slaughter its own people by the tens of thousands, as Iran is doing, will not hesitate to launch ICBMs with nuclear warheads against our cities. Later, the Democrat Party lies repeatedly to gain power. Gov Abigal Spanberger campaigned as a moderate but she's raising taxes on everyday items and is proposing new income tax rates for the "rich," which will make Virginia unaffordable and turn it into a dark blue state. Afterward, Don Lemon isn't a real journalist, he just seeks drama and attention. He violated the law for storming into a Church service allegedly violating the FACE act. Yet, the media attacks the Trump administration. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
PWTorch editor Wade Keller is joined by PWTorch's Joshua White to discuss the Jan. 15 edition of TNA Impact including analysis their premiere episode on AMC and how, in almost every way (but not every way), it was a swing and a miss with brand-celebrations rather than framing their top stars and building the main event, with one trope and cliche and low-rent segment after another before the main event, a list of castoffs from other companies and non-celebrities and poorly introduced TNA-originals. That said, they also discuss the positive of Santana winning the TNA Title, the strength of the Santino-Daria G.M. segment, and other strengths to build on or expand in the future. There is live chat, caller, and email interactions throughout plus Wade explains what TNA should have done in terms of the first few minutes of the show and the overall format to stand out in the crowded marketplace.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/pwtorch-dailycast--3276210/support.
The anti-ICE protests, sparked by the fatal shooting of Renee Good, presently happening throughout the USA, don’t appear to be dying down. So why does it appear to be mostly white women protesting? There are several theories as to why that is, but one is that a lot of these women are unmarried and childless but still have the instinct to mother, so they see ICE agents as their ex-husbands and the illegal immigrants as the children they don’t have. Plus, they’re sick and thus overly medicated on a chemical cocktail of antidepressants and SSRIs. The ICE agents are there to do their job, which is to enforce the law, and process warrants for people who are in the country illegally. So why are so many white women angry about it? Listeners certainly have their opinions about why this is. Meanwhile, what’s with all the whistles?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
At Redeemer, we take seriously Jesus' call to "Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Apprenticeship to Jesus is not a one time decision, but a lifelong journey of following Jesus as our master-teacher. Since the goal of the Christian life is maturity in Jesus, apprenticeship must be deep and holistic, transforming the spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and vocational parts of men and women. Apprenticeship to Jesus is learning to practice the way of Jesus in our homes, relationships, neighborhoods, and jobs. We believe Christlikeness is cultivated as we implement spiritual practices, live in community with other believers, and submit to the Word and the Spirit. We agree with Dallas Willard who said, "that the gospel is opposed to earning, not effort." As we move towards cultivating a life of loving God and people, we trust Christ will mature us into his likeness. https://redeemerwichita.church/

Misguided ideas surface in healthcare settings all the time. With warmth and loving amusement, we reflect on how these initiatives—often wrapped in corporate optimism—miss the mark. yet don't have to steal our peace. Brilliantly bad ideas aren't about you and tehy don't have to steal your peace. They're structural, impersonal, and often just disconnected from the day-to-day reality of clinical life. We invite you to laugh with us, reflect, and most importantly, not to take them personally. Pearls of Wisdom: • Bad ideas often come with good intentions—they're usually more about systemic gaps than personal disrespect. • You get to choose how much energy to bring to these initiatives—humor and grace are powerful tools. • "Wellness" programs often miss the mark because they don't reflect the lived reality of those they're meant to support. • Expecting and accepting mismatched ideas can bring lightness—and maybe even loving amusement. Reflection Questions: • What is your favorite "brilliantly bad idea?" • How might you use humor to help you when the next one comes your way? Please send us the brilliantly bad ideas you have witnessed. We would love to hear them! If you're navigating burnout, frustration, or the absurdities of healthcare, we offer coaching, retreats, and workshops to help you find clarity, compassion, and joy again. In this episode, Ben, Cameron, and Dan are joined by Ted Cadsby, former executive at CIBC, author of The Power of Index Funds, Closing the Mind Gap, and Hard to Be Human. Ted brings a rare combination of experience in both finance and cognitive psychology, having helped introduce index investing to Canada before turning his attention to how human thinking itself often misleads us. Ted shares inside stories from his time at CIBC—how he tried to make the bank an indexing leader in the late 1990s, the pushback he faced, and why he still believes so deeply in indexing today. Then, the conversation turns to human cognition: why our brains evolved for simplicity, certainty, and emotion, and how those traits can sabotage both our portfolios and our peace of mind. From "greedy reductionism" and "certainty addiction" to emotional overreaction and competing selves, Ted unpacks the five cognitive design flaws that make it hard to be human—and how metacognition and mindfulness can help us overcome them. Key Points From This Episode: (0:04) Introduction to the Rational Reminder Podcast and hosts. (0:18) Cameron's story about rediscovering The Power of Index Funds and reconnecting with Ted Cadsby. (2:21) How Ted brought index investing to CIBC and tried to make the bank a leader in indexing. (5:58) Why assessing active managers taught Ted about randomness, noise, and the illusion of skill. (8:42) The moment Ted "saw the light" on indexing—and why randomness, not market efficiency, is the real obstacle for active managers. (12:54) How Ted tried to implement index investing at CIBC and the cultural resistance he faced. (15:05) The goals of The Power of Index Funds (1999) and how he tied indexing to human behavior. (18:49) How his indexing push created internal conflict at CIBC and ultimately led to his departure. (23:23) The influence of John Bogle and Vanguard on Ted's mission to bring indexing to Canada. (26:59) Why he's still passionate about indexing, and what worries him about private equity. (31:44) How human cognition and philosophy led him from finance to exploring how we think. (34:46) The "Big Five" cognitive design flaws that shape human decision-making: 1. Greedy reductionism – our urge to oversimplify complex systems. 2. Certainty addiction – craving the feeling of knowing, even when we're wrong. 3. Emotional hostage-taking – overreacting and ruminating. 4. Competing selves – inner conflicts between present and future selves. 5. Misguided search for meaning – overextending our need for purpose. (44:11) Why modern life amplifies these flaws and how System 1 (automatic) and System 2 (deliberate) thinking play into it. (48:00) The human superpower: metacognition—our ability to think about thinking. (49:57) How mindfulness and a "meditative stance" help us use metacognition daily. (53:57) Why knowing your biases isn't enough—emotional regulation is the real challenge. (56:27) How to recognize triggers for deeper reflection and System 2 thinking. (1:00:34) How systems thinking and better questions can combat our reductionist tendencies. (1:05:57) Why our addiction to certainty fuels overconfidence and poor decisions. (1:08:43) How humility, probabilistic thinking, and skepticism can make us wiser investors and humans. (1:11:39) When to listen to emotions—and when to treat them as cognitive red flags.
