Our pick for December 2024 is Joan Jett's Bad Reputation, her first debut solo studio album after her band The Runaways called it quits. It was originally released independently in May 1980, self titled, then Jett signed with Boardwalk Records and it was re-released worldwide with this new title on January 23, 1981. It was pretty favourably received, with Jett having song writing credits on just 4 of 12 songs, with 5 singles being released. This was pre Jett forming The Black Hearts. Today Jett is recognized as one of the OG females of rock n' roll and is still going strong today. She's a legend. Dig in and see what you think...

Holy O3L! No, that's not some sort of Batman-style exclamatory remark...it really is a Holy O3L. Or at least as close as we get. This week, we discuss spirituality in music, as we count down some of our favorite spiritual songs...which happens to run the gamut from Mahalia Jackson to Beastie Boys to the Grateful Dead, and many stops in between. Along the way, we talk about catfish Robert Plant, real Peter Frampton, Greeks in short shorts, F.A.'s, relationship advice, gators, and so, so much more with this week's Third Lad, Debra Cohen! This is Only Three Lads like you've never heard. Debra Cohen began her music career as a New Wave rocker in the early '80s. Her band opened up for Joan Jett & The Blackhearts at legendary Rathskeller ("The Rat") in Boston. They had a regional radio hit with their single "Boston Nights." Debra's song "Dreamin" was discussed to be covered by INXS. Everything seemed to be going her way, until the rock n' roll temptations of drugs and alcohol nearly cost Debra her life...and it was at her darkest moment that she found God. After a stint fronting a blues band in the '90s, she left the music business behind and studied Judaism. In recent years, Debra has rebranded herself as a spiritual pop/rock singer/songwriter. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles and Doug welcome Stephen Pitalo, a music video historian and creator of the Music Video Time Machine. The discussion explores the golden age of music videos from the 80s and 90s, touching on Stephen's website, magazine, and blog that highlight iconic music videos and upcoming events. They reminisce about Stephen's first concert experience with Ratt and Bon Jovi in 1985, his fascinating encounters with musicians, and the influential music video directors he has interviewed for his upcoming book. The conversation also delves into memorable concerts attended by Stephen, from an unforgettable Joey Ramone show to a spectacular Prince performance, while also addressing the surprising disappointment of Billy Bob Thornton's Boxmasters. So, here's my idea for a music festival: REM, ABC, ELO, and NWA, and we'll call it "The Spelling Bee." (Please, "Alphabet Soup" was too obvious.) I wonder if my guests would go to that? The ticket stub would look interesting, anyway. But Charles and Doug have interesting stories and memorabilia for their show, and if you're an avid concert- goer, you'll appreciate the stories that get told. I actually have some true-life concert stories myself, that I didn't get to mention, like the "beret incident" at Samantha Fox(* unofficially pronounced "Suh-suh-suh-suh Samantha FOX!) and the "mooing" challenge at Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. (Sadly, I'm not joking..). But check out their show-it's definitely a tribute to live music. While sadly, I cannot assemble a solo kazoo tour. Anyway, thanks for coming on the show, guys! We have a special guest, soldier, American hero, and a friend of mine, Matt Hursey. In our podcast today titled, Beyond the Battlefield: A Soldier's Continuing War, Matt shares the story of his battalion's journey into Iraq's Sunni Triangle of Death recorded in the book, Black Hearts and Painted Guns, written by Kelly Adds and Daniel S. Morgan. Matt is the recipient of the Purple Heart, and in today's podcast, takes us into the Triangle of Death, and recounts the difficult circumstances that he and his fellow soldiers faced. Just as important, he takes us beyond the battlefield and speaks to the ongoing war that a soldier continues to fight with PTSD when he returns home..Matt's story is a soldier's story. and while he spared us of the graphic horrors that he encountered, it's important that we experience some of their pain so that we can begin to understand what they have faced. The last thing these brave men want from us is our sympathy, but they deserve our thanks and respect. Matt's story is a story that can inspire others who are struggling with PTSD from traumatic encounters that there is hope and healing through organizations like Warrior Path. .Most every soldier placed in a life and death situation reaches out to God in what is known as a "Fox Hole" prayer. We ask Matt to discuss the role of faith and the elephant in the room for everyone alive...is there a God and how do we respond to His call on our lives. It's an honor to have Matt with us today. This mixtape features the second single by Hudson Palace - The Who Cover ‘I'm A Boy' to be released this year. And the song, maybe one of the first in pop culture history to question gender roles, is captured here to psyche-folk perfection. It's not all covers, though; three are a few originals by Against Me!, Cavetown, Phranc, and others. From Tony, half of Hudson Palace - "I'm A Boy" was a particular fave of mine as a kid, back when I first fell in love with The Who and played the Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy compilation daily, which it closed out. (The photograph shows art of myself at around that age.) It has taken a lifetime of being involved in music, which has included writing extensively about The Who, to feel comfortable with covering Pete Townshend's songs; fortunately, forming Hudson Palace with Paula has allowed for a (semi)-acoustic approach to the loudest of rock bands, and this song have an additionally baroque element to it.Artists - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, The Raincoats, Hudson Palace, Cavetown, Mhaol, Yoko Ono, Le Tigre, Föllakzoid, Antony And The Johnsons, and loads more. They say this one is the real deal. In Episode 98 of Overthink, Ellie and David untangle the philosophy behind the way we compare, judge, and defend our reputations. From Machiavelli's advice to despots looking to stay popular, to disgruntled students venting on their professors online, reputation can glide you to victory or trigger your fall from grace. Exploring concepts like the Matthew effect, the homo comparativus, and informational assymetry, your hosts ask: Why do both Joan Jett and Jean-Jacques Rousseau refuse reputation's fickle pleasures? Does David actually have a good work-life balance, or is everyone else hoodwinked?
