Film de science-fiction horrifique, comédie musicale déjantée, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, cʹest culte. Jack Tame: Tearing down statues isn't the answer

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

‘Only bad people live to see their likeness set in stone.’That is among my favourite Lorde lyrics. If it’s were 100% true then it’s really bad news for former All Black flanker Michael Jones, whose magnificent likeness stretches out for a try outside the entrance to Eden Park . It’s really bad news for Richard O’Brien, the creator of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I reckon his Riff Raff statue is maybe the best thing on Hamilton’s main drag. Of course no one is suggesting we do anything to the Iceman or to Richard O’Brien, yet.But times change. I suppose a few hundred years ago it would have seemed crazy to some that in 2020 we would rip down a statue of Captain John Hamilton. Of course it would seem just as crazy to others that we would even name a city after him in the first place.Sadly, I don’t think pulling down statues stops us from being racist.I also don’t think that repeatedly being confronted by an idealised glorified likeness of someone who raped and murdered your ancestors is a way to feel like you haven’t been born into a society that is systematically pitted against you. Both of those opinions can exist.I actually quite like Tame Iti’s solution, which was maybe inspired by the former Communist countries that in the last 30 years have gone through a bit of an internal rebranding exercise. The former Communists and Soviet Union LOVED a good statue. In Hungary once, I went to an amazing park where all sorts of brutalist statues that were ripped down at the end of communism have been stored, grouped, and arranged as an artistic attraction. There are statues of Lenin and Marx, and castings of Stalin’s boots. The park’s official slogan says it’s dedicated to the victory of democracy over dictatorship. Anyone monitoring Hungary’s current political trajectory will sadly note that neither removing the statues from their original locations, NOR preserving that history, has done anything to stop the rise of a new totalitarian regime. But that’s Tame Iti’s solution. Tear down colonial monuments, sure, but don’t destroy them. Chuck them in a park instead. Maybe flesh out the little plaque or blurb a bit as well. My opinion is this: History is nuanced. It’s messy. It’s complicated. And so are people. No one anywhere is 100% good or 100% bad. Who deserves to stay and who deserves to go? Would we erect a statue today of someone who murdered people or promoted racist ideas? I certainly hope not! But judging by the Facebook comments of the last few days, dragging down a slab of concrete and metal may even fuel racism as much as anything. If I can offer any advice… it’s this: Read. Don’t take your sense of identity from whatever bronze figure is plumped up in your city. Read. History is far more complex and important than any long-dead man with seagull shit on his head will ever be able to convey.

The Classic Film: Night of the Demons (1988) "Ten teenagers party at an abandoned funeral parlor on Halloween night. When an evil force awakens, demonic spirits keep them from leaving and turn their gathering into a living Hell” (IMDb.com). This B-movie was surprisingly fun, despite (or because of?) a complete lack of commitment to lore or reason.  The Modern Film: Night of the Demons (2009) "A group of kids go to a Halloween party, only to have to face down a group of demons” (IMDb.com). Same thing; different day. This second attempt added some promising lore, but it has the absolute stank of post-2000 horror remake all over it. Rich O’Brien, MD, PhD, the Disque D. Deane University Professor of Neurology and chair of the Department of Neurology, is an expert in memory disorders. He discusses why a person might be able to recall a retirement party they attended thirty years ago, but not what they had for lunch that day. Transcript Lindsay Key Welcome to head scratchers, a mini cast from the Duke University School of Medicine. We asked Duke experts to help us understand the questions in science that have us scratching our heads. Today we're speaking with Dr. Rich O'Brien, an expert in memory disorders. We asked Dr. O’Brien, my mother has dementia. She can remember her retirement party 30 years ago, but now what she had for lunch today. Why is that? Dr. Richard O'Brien What you're essentially asking me is the difference between short term and long term memories. Short and long term memories are stored in different parts of the brain. Short term memories are dependent on the hippocampus. For a short term memory to become consolidated takes about a week. Once that week has passed, you can remove the hippocampus and the memory will stay there forever. What memory is, is a reenactment of the actual event by the parts of the brain that processed it initially. So when you recall a memory you essentially re-process and go through the event again, just like you initially experienced it. Your mother's retirement party 30 years ago is a series of sounds that she remembers, visions that she remembers, and emotions. Because it was a highly emotional event she is far more likely to retain that memory, just like most of us have very strong memories of September 11th. What she had for lunch today might have been incredibly dull, something she has quite frequently, and she might have been distracted while she was eating it. And for all those reasons, she might not remember what she had for lunch and have absolutely nothing wrong with her. However, if her husband is concerned that she can't remember what she had for lunch or dinner, can't remember her keys, seems to get lost when she's out of the house, and keeps asking the same question over and over, like, “When is it time for lunch?” even though she's just eaten lunch, then it could be because she has a memory disorder. The rule we use in clinic is that if you're worried about your memory, there's nothing wrong. If someone else is worried about your memory, that's a big problem. Lindsay Key Thanks for listening. Movie Addict HQ begins Halloween month with a Halloween Fun Fest featuring short clips from two of our favorite interviews. Through the magic of imagination and technology,  guests Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff join the late great entertainer George Bettinger and talented actress/singer Lizette Amado-Bettinger in a lively discussion about which movie is the scariest one ever made.  Next, actor Barry Bostwick – who plays Susan Sarandon’s naïve boyfriend in The Rocky Horror Picture Show – talks about the famous Rocky Horror midnight screenings with BlogTalkRadio CEO Alan Levy, one of the first fans participating in those unique events that helped make this outrageous film so successful.    Lugosi is best known for his creepy performance as Dracula in the 1931 film of the same name, and Karloff for his scary monster in Frankenstein -- also released in 1931. Bostwick has appeared in over 100 films and television productions. He may be best-known as the clueless mayor on Spin City. However, he’s a triple-threat entertainer -- singer, dancer, actor -- who created the role of Danny Zuko in Grease on Broadway. The Rocky Horror Picture Show makes fun of B-movies, science-fiction and horror films. Adapted from the British rock musical written by Richard O’Brien, the movie was directed by Jim Sharman -- and Tim Curry made his film debut as the flamboyant Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Surprisingly, Rocky Horror bombed when it first opened in 1975, but those entertaining midnight showings soon catapulted the film into cult status.

Chris & Kelsey only have seven days left since they watched two films with ticking death clocks! Thanks for the recommendation, Lou! The Original: Ringu (1998) “A reporter and her ex-husband investigate a cursed video tape that is rumored to kill the viewer seven days after watching it” (IMDb.com). With much more subtle storytelling than it's famous gaijin remake (if you discount all of the psychic stuff), this incredible original might have you wondering why they bothered remaking it in the first place. The Remake: The Ring (2002) “A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it” (IMDb.com). Listen along with YOUR stepfather! The Classic Film: The Stepfather (1987) "After murdering his entire family, a man remarries a widow with a teenage daughter in another town and prepares to do it all over again" (IMDb.com). As the two men get to know each other, he becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand" (Sony Pictures). The Classic Film: Slaughter High (1986) "Eight people are invited to their old high school for their ten-year reunion where a fellow former student, disfigured from a prank gone wrong, is out to seek revenge" (IMDb.com). It's a worn-out plot. It's made by people with little knowledge of the country where it was supposed to take place. The accents are so bad that they're funny. It has a twist that makes the movie worse. But if you love 80s slashers, this one is a can't-miss! The Modern Film: April Fool's Day (2008) "A year after an April Fool's Day prank which resulted in the death of one of their set, a group of friends find themselves targeted by someone who is out for revenge" (IMDb.com). This was supposed to be a remake of the 1986 original of the same name (the reason Slaughter High had to change its name), but when they couldn't get the rights, they were forced to reWRITE instead.
