Welcome to our new series: Early Career...like our grad life series, we will document our movement across this phase of our careers. Hopefully this will help other junior faculty as they set off in their careers as well. We kick it off by discussing the transition from student to TT faculty with podcast all-star Ashley Appleby. Dr. Ashley Appleby is an assistant professor of criminal justice in the school of social sciences, communication, and humanities at Endicott College. She received her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University, Newark - School of Criminal Justice, and her B.A. in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Quinnipiac University. Ashley's research broadly considers the intersection between contact with the criminal legal system and experience of education. She is a student alumnus and trained instructor with the International Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program and has previously worked with the NJ-Step and Petey Greene programs. Dr. Appleby is a first-generation college graduate, and she has extensive teaching and pedagogical training in the field.
Hour 2 - Local attorney Kristi Fulnecky joins Nick this morning: The Rock for President? Kristi has a new Missouri client that was part of the Jan. 6 incident. Do you remember the Howard Stern and Petey Greene interview? American rapper Azealia Banks said she believes getting canceled makes you "cool" and expressed support for the Second Amendment during an interview with The Standard.
“Petey Greene the Talking Machine” was Washington DC's fast talking, provocative, but tell-it-like-it is radio disc jockey. His life is a turn-your-lemons-into-lemonade success story. Petey served 21 years in prison but it was in prison where he found his calling as a radio personality. Prison guards used to let Petey use the prison PA system for two hours a day so that he could entertain his fellow inmates with his quick wit and sharp humor. Upon his release, he landed his own show, “Rappin' with Petey Greene,” on DC's AM radio station WOL 1450. Though he battled many demons throughout his career, he used his own story as a message to listeners to not make the same mistakes he made in life. Extremely foulmouthed and brutally honest, Petey was loved by all, from street cronies to even the President of the United States. His life in radio proved that the power of authenticity can take one to new heights.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I didn’t tell anyone especially her in the family about the childhood abuse I experienced because I was afraid of their leaving Earth sooner than I was supposed to in awful ways. I felt that the secrets means they get to leave Earth naturally. Those trauma complexes are forever over. She likes my Liberal-Progressive views on women. She likes my childless confirmed bachelor statuses. Towards the end, I talk about her tiredness from heavy working one day while throwing away a hot dog that a White man out glass in due to her instincts and clean up White folks’ homes for a living, losing her husband to disease, overcoming feeling I can’t trust anyone in my family after my aunt and Her (grandma mom) transitioned, I love her quotes, her sending 7-8 kids to college as a single mother in the projects, her community activism (I call her the very first human rights champion I know,) her distrusting Malcolm X and Petey Greene for their criminal pasts to having respect for them towards the ends of their lives as they were improving their lives, my African spirituality (thinking and talking in heart with Her and my ancestry with every choice and view I make and have), my Cultural Liberalism, my nontraditional bond with Jesus, Love is my religion and my religion is love (even though I do not practice any religion.) She’s okay with me evading what is supposed to be Christian television and some supposedly Christian aspects because of the unethical practices. She has no problem with each and every detail about myself! There is no subject unsuitable for discussion with us! We are in temporal and eternal conversation, as well as temporal and eternal kinship union! I am number two to Her (Jesus is number one and that’s fine with me.) She is number two to me and number one to me is Christlikeness. In fact, she's the first "Church and Christlikeness" I've ever experienced! We are One! We are safe as singular! We are also true friends! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support
Consider this an appetizer. Digging into this year's Maryland General Assembly, I selected a few environmental bills to keep track of. These bills involve food security, PFAS, and other subjects I've covered on the show thus far. I'll be tracking these bills as they make they way through the legislative process. I gave flowers to Petey Greene a DC radio and TV personality who inspired me to start podcasting. Resources as always, are below! https://www.peteygreene.org/ 2021 LEGISLATION - Lorig Charkoudian D20 Campaign (lorigd20.com)
Petey Green was a drunk, and ex-con, a radio and television show host, a social advocate, and a voice of the Washington DC black community. If you don't know about Petey Green, you will be a fan once you listen to this episode. But, what did the filmmakers leave out? It was the very thing that drove Petey Green - and provided his legacy. Dawn and John join Rob for a discussion that celebrates Petey Greene, and highlights the important work he did in the Washington DC community which the movie missed.

"JB" James Brown on one of the most important lessons he learned from being cut by the Atlanta Hawks ~ ". . .when I looked back on it, there's a verse in the Bible that says, "Why be concerned about the speck in your brother's eye when there's a plank in your own eye?" And if you point a finger and blame at somebody, there are three pointing right back at you. It was on me. I didn't work as hard as them, and I vowed in the game of life I would never let an opportunity pass me by, that I didn't work hard to capitalize on the opportunity." "JB" James Brown (right) Sportscaster and Special Correspondent with Andy Ockershausen (left) A Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town and I have a distinct pleasure to introduce our next guest. My wife feels that he is tall, dark and handsome. We know about the dark. And he is talented and he is homegrown right here in Our Town. There are certain people in this world that I grew up with and you could say their name like Sonny, like Tiger. You know who they're talking about. Frank, the Singer and then there's JB. There's only one JB in my life and I've been around a long time. JB graduated from Harvard. I want to find out how he get in Harvard. You worked at Xerox. I didn't know you work for Eastman Kodak, a two great American corporation. He got his start in broadcasting right here in Washington D.C. Bullets. He had the best job at sports hosting NFL Today, Thursday Night Football, NFL Pre-game, this network CBS and Fox. He was a standout on the basketball court as well as on the TV set and that's a great line. My friend, James Brown. "JB" James Brown: Andy. A Ockershausen: JB. "JB" James Brown: Since your wife has accurately described me as being dark as well, too dark to blush as I listened to all of that, but- A Ockershausen: But you're handsome, JB especially the beard. "JB" James Brown: Oh, please. Are you kidding me? Hey, my grand kids must have told you to say that. So right ... And I've got four of them now, but I will get to that point. A Ockershausen: Wow. "JB" James Brown: Yes. A Ockershausen: But your family is from Washington. "JB" James Brown: Native Washingtonians. A Ockershausen: Your Mom and Dad were born here. They grew up here? The Early Years - Education and Sports "JB" James Brown: Dad grew up in Georgetown. A Ockershausen: Wow. "JB" James Brown: Was very good, knew Petey Greene. Of course we know that venerable name in Washington Circles. So Petey Greene was the one who actually got me involved in television. A Ockershausen: Is that right? "JB" James Brown: And I'll get to that. Mom actually was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and went to Chicago and then came to Washington were she and my dad met. Hey, Andy, talk about dusting off cobwebs, I looked at my birth certificate which of course had me described back in the day as they did "Colored" and I was born at Gallagher Hospital and didn't even know- A Ockershausen: Gallinger. "JB" James Brown: Gallinger. Thank you. Thank you very much. Gallinger. Was that the forerunner to the Women's Hospital? A Ockershausen: D.C. Jail. You know where the jail is? Gallinger was over there. "JB" James Brown: I'm sorry I asked you about that. I'm sorry I asked you about that. Janice Ockershausen: That's his neighborhood. A Ockershausen: JB, Eastern High School and the D.C. Jail and Gallinger all together. "JB" James Brown: Somehow I know I can't ask to this part of the conversation to be cut out but . . . Janice Ockershausen: JB, that was Andy's neighborhood.
