The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin
Francesca Rudkin: Why are there more musical biopics these days?

The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin

Yesterday on Jack Tame's show, I was talking about the new Springsteen film - Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere - and Jack asked me why there have been so many music biopics recently? It got me thinking about how musicians and their origin stories and struggles with fame have always made for good films, and we've always made them. But Jack is right, there have been quite a few biopics about musicians recently - think Better Man about Robbie Williams, A Complete Unknown about Bob Dylan, Bob Marley: One Love, Back to Black about Amy Winehouse, Maria about Maria Callas … and there's plenty more on the way. In 2028, each Beatle is getting their own film, thanks to director Sam Mendes. The truth of the matter is probably that they make money. Marvel and comic book superhero cinema dominance is cooling off, and so in recent years Hollywood has turned to the music biopic genre to replace it. It makes sense really. Like comic book heroes, many of these artists lives are steeped in mythology perfect to mine for drama, their stories are part of pop culture. And apart from paying for music rights - they aren't too expensive to make. And, we love them. We love the comfort of their familiarity and a bit of nostalgia. The music industry also love music biopics, it's a wonderful way for the industry to reconnect an artist with their audience and create new fans. The Springsteen movie is about the making of his acoustic, folk inspired album Nebraska. I listened to the album in the car on the way home from watching the film. Tick, job done. For me, the genre was revitalised with 2005's Walk the Line, which told the story of flawed genius Johnny Cash and his wife June's relationship. It told it - warts and all. Around that time, Ray, about Ray Charles, was also released, as was Control, the story of the troubled life and times of Ian Curtis, lead singer of new wave band Joy Division. Since then, we have been tapping our toes and reliving our own relationships with the music of Elvis, Elton John, Freddie Mercury and NWA. As popular as the genre is, and as much as we enjoy the ride, it's tricky for filmmakers to get these films right. Artists' stories often follow the same narrative beats so can be samey, but it can be risky taking a unique approach. Taking on a lead role can be rewarding for actors in awards season, but fans are judgy when watching an interpretation of their heroes. Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere is a good case in point. Aside from a few concert scenes, mostly we watch Springsteen record an album in his bedroom and studio while slipping into depression. It's hardly a glossy, mainstream rollicking ride. If you're looking for something to watch this long weekend, and watching Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen isn't your thing, then hunt out some of our own music stories - which have been turned into excellent documentaries. Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua - Two Worlds, The Chills: The Triumph & Tragedy of Martin Phillipps, Alien Weaponry - Thrash Metal and Te Reo Māori, Shihad - Beautiful Machine, Heavenly Pop Hits - The Flying Nun Story. So many good choices. It's also worth noting Life in One Chord - the Shayne Carter story - will be available to rent from DOC PLAY from November 6th. All beautifully told stories that enrich our lives. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textA fighter who can break you in the ring but apologizes with his eyes—this is the paradox that hooked us. We went in expecting swagger, exits through flames, and the usual invincible sheen. What we found instead was Dwayne Johnson letting go of “The Rock” and stepping into Mark Kerr with bruised grace, while Emily Blunt turns every shared scene into a live wire. The fights snap, sure, but the quiet beats are louder: the held breath before a bad decision, the shame that keeps secrets alive, and the kind of friendship that refuses to fracture just to give the plot a twist. We dig into the gendered crossfire at the story's heart: how many men are taught to love by building careers, and how many women ask for presence over provision. The movie lingers in that gap, and we sit in the discomfort with it. Anger simmers but doesn't detonate where you expect; the violence turns inward, and that choice feels painfully real. Mark Coleman's portrayal becomes the rare on-screen constant—no jealous heel turn, no betrayal—just loyalty with boundaries, the kind of anchor that gives recovery a chance. That sincerity helps the film dodge cliché and keeps the emotional stakes honest. Then there's the ending—anticlimactic, maybe even jarring. We wrestle with it. Is that a flaw, or the truest note a biopic can hit? Redemption rarely sticks its landings on cue, and postscript text can bruise a perfect arc. Still, what stays with us is the craft: documentary textures, long takes that force the question to bloom, and two leads who create a pressure cooker without a punch thrown. Call it a sports biopic if you want, but we felt a relationship drama with gloves on.If you're drawn to performance-driven stories, complicated love, and a sports film that cares more about the person than the trophy, queue this one up. And if you've seen it, we want your take—does that final note work for you, or does it undercut the climb? Follow, share, and leave a review to keep the conversation going. Support the show

The MOTM has been a long tradition on the Lambcast, well before I came along and took the reins. We are starting some innovations on the practice and they commence this week. The MOTM will now be focused on a different genre or theme each month. My hope is that it will make it easier for people with films they want to talk about to remember to submit their choices. I will also submit a number of options so that the community will have a minimum number of movies to vote for. This new process has just started, and Biopics were the genre for September. This week's episode is the first product of the changes, the winner by just a couple of votes, so this month we are going to “Walk the Line”. Chelsea Handler's silver strapless gown draws mixed reviews—Patrik calls it “prom 1975,” while Sarah defends her ex-boss: “I think it looks good on her!” Elsa Hosk's sheer, couture Cannes gown blows them away: “This is the definition of slay.” Kristen Stewart's cream shorts suit sparks debate over proportions and those controversial bobby socks. When Sarah's own red satin top appears on screen, Patrik calls it “Halloween gone bad.” She promises never to wear it again. In between fashion roasts, they commiserate over self-tape auditions. Patrik groans about taping for parts like crack dealers, plastic-surgery addicts, and porn-star managers. Sarah admits she prefers professional taping studios because filming with her husband is “a recipe for divorce.” Then it's time for Pol's coffee reading—Sarah's main reason for showing up again. He sees: A person close to her (with a “J” in the name) who pretends to be supportive but is actually jealous and waiting for the right moment to sabotage her. A project she's put aside that will unite her stand-up, writing, and acting—her real path forward. A future trip that will be canceled, and she shouldn't force it (“You'll find out later you weren't supposed to go.”).  Sarah looks stunned: “I think I know who this is.” They play a game of “Sarah Colonna: Chelsea Lately or Football Wife?” recalling whether she ever flashed an audience (she didn't), spilled a drink on the owner's shoes (also didn't), or got mistaken for a cheerleader (sadly, no). They giggle about Snow White 90210 being called “Little Thunder” at football games. Sarah shares memories of her worst commercial—a Home Depot ad shot near the airport with no AC. “They were mad I was sweating in July!” she recalls. They laugh about how she still does self-tapes, though she'd rather be in the room getting feedback. Wrapping up, Sarah talks about her live shows in Oregon, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Tacoma, and Spokane. She plugs her podcasts: Are You My Podcast with Mary Radzinski The Book Lisp with her husband Jon (“It's about books—and our lisp!”) We end with Sarah declaring she feels “naked and afraid—in the best way.”  This is another Hurrdat Media Production. TVC 694.1: Ed welcomes back Tom Lisanti, renowned historian of sixties cinema, and the author of such books as Carol Lynley: Her Film & TV Career in Thrillers, Fantasy and Suspense and Ryan's Hope: An Oral History of Daytime's Groundbreaking Soap. Tom's recent books include Dueling Harlows: The Race to Bring the Actress's Life to the Silver Screen, everything you wanted to know about the two major motion pictures released in 1965 about screen legend Jean Harlow—both of which happened to be named Harlow—and the highly publicized efforts by rival producers Bill Sargent and Joseph Levine to out-do each other. Sargent's Harlow, a quickly made independent movie starring Carol Lynley, was filmed in black and white, using Sargent's patented technology Electronovision. Levine's Harlow, a big budget biopic starring Carroll Baker, was filmed in color for Paramount Pictures. Both Harlows were originally released within a few weeks of each other in 1965; both are available now on home entertainment. Dueling Harlows is available from McFarlandPub.com. Topics this segment include why the Lynley/Sargent Harlow is much better than what the original reviews would suggest; how Lynley originally signed on because Judy Garland was attached to the project, only to remain stuck on it once Garland quit; and why the real-life story of Harlow herself generated such interest in movie makers.
