Dennis Blair's journey into comedy started by accident—but what a ride it's been. Originally a musician and songwriter, Blair stumbled into stand-up when his musical parodies unexpectedly stole the show. That moment of unexpected laughter led him to open for comedy icons, work alongside legends like Rodney Dangerfield and George Carlin, and write for some of the biggest names in entertainment. With a career spanning decades, Blair shares unforgettable behind-the-scenes stories, from writing Rappin' Rodney to witnessing the quirks of some of Hollywood's most legendary comedians. Episode Highlights: Opening for Legends – Rodney Dangerfield discovered Blair early on, leading to years of touring with him, Joan Rivers, and George Carlin. Behind the Scenes of Easy Money – Writing for Dangerfield meant constant joke revisions and hilarious Hollywood chaos. Rodney's Wildest Moments – From limo rides gone wrong to infamous wardrobe malfunctions, Blair saw it all. From Comedy Clubs to Concert Arenas – Blair's musical comedy act made him the perfect opener for The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, Gloria Estefan, and more. Writing for the Greats – A tag here, a punchline there—Blair even contributed jokes to Carlin's act, an honor for any comedian. Touring with Legends – His book shares untold stories of life on the road with entertainment's biggest names. Bay Area, 一度被称为 “the land of pimps and Panthers”. Bay Area hip-hop is “the product of pimps and hustlers just as much as activists and intellectuals”. Bay Area in the ‘80s1981 年第一张 Bay Area Rap record “Super Rat” by Motorcycle Mike ;奥克兰最有代表性和影响力的嘻哈音乐人 Too Short 从 1981 年开始就通过自制磁带在街头累积了信用和关注,他的前三次发行来自独立厂牌 75 Girls Records,1987 年的 “Born to Mack”开始由专业大厂牌发行,同时期成立了自己的 Dangerous Crew 和厂牌 Dangerous Music,音乐中的低音已经有了特点,这也是他将 pimp 作为自己代表形象的开始,在当时的嘻哈场景中十分稀有,1988 年 “Life Is … Too Short” 制作开始成熟;Bay Area 标志声音的标志制作人 Ant Banks,“肥”感的低音,Daft Punk 还表示受到了他的影响;*更正信息:Spice 1 的“Let it Be Known”官方发行时间为 1991 年。 ‘90s 的街头音乐 Mobb Music 和 P-Funk 传承Bay Area 地区突出低音的,与同时期 West Coast G-Funk 有区别的 Hip Hop 风格 Mobb Music;Too Short 我简直太喜欢了,在还没有 G-Funk 这个说法时(或没有形成一种普遍共识的风格),专辑 “Short Dog's In The House”(1990) 已经体现出由 P-Funk 继承而来的风格,并且十分清新,”Shorty The Pimp”(1992), “Get In Where You Fit In”(1993) 同样出色,我们都认为他的贡献是被低估的,并且 Too Short 还是最早以 Pimp 形象作为 rap persona 的老哥之一,这个形象持续而深入人心;关于 Pimp Culture 的 Newsletter 回顾: 关于皮条客文化的思考,以及 2024 年女性视角的补充成立于 1987 年的 Digital Underground 初始风格带有强烈的 Black Panther Party 政治意识,但核心人物 Shock G 认为当时已经有硬核的 N.W.A 和 Public Enemy 了,就将风格转换为更加幽默胡闹,诞生了 Humpty Hump 这个经典形象。 “Sex Packets”(1990) 是非常浓的 P-Funk 影响,"This Is an E.P. Release” (1991) 的 “Same Song”中正式介绍了家族成员——当时还是 Digital Underground 的 Rodie 的 2Pac. 还推荐 “Future Rhythm”(1996) 这张独立发行专辑(有两首歌出现在我们都很喜欢的喜剧电影 “Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood”), “The Lost Files”(1999) 合集, “Who Got the Gravy?”(1998);2Pac 早期还是个快乐 funky 小伙儿,我们都非常喜欢有 Digital Underground 参与的作品;1988 年来自 Vallejo 的 The Click 组合成立,E-40 与兄弟 D-Shot,妹妹 Suga T,表亲 B-Legit 一家子成员,在叔叔 Saint Charles 组织下首次亮相于 EP “The Kings Men” by M.V.P;90s 初开始, The Click 家族,尤其是 E-40 开始成为了 Bay Area 的独特声音之一,抽着说的 flow 对后来的 Bay Area 也有巨大影响,推荐专辑 “In a Major Way”(1995);凶狠且幽默的 Spice 1 从 1992 年的同名专辑开始,保持稳定输出,是一位写词技术高超的 rapper,90s 的作品都获得了高评价,推荐专辑 “197 He Wrote”(1993), 经典全谋杀题材,“Amerikkka's Nightmare”(1994), “1990-Sick”(1995);来自 San Francisco 的 RBL Posse 贡献了草药赞歌 “Don't Give Me No Bammer Weed” (1992 年的 “A Lesson To Be Learned”),RBL 组合有一段已经被遗忘的历史,关于成员之一 Mr.Cee 被残忍错杀的故事,在节目中没有提到,但非常推荐大家了解一下 “A History of RBL Posse with Black C: On Bammer, Mistaken Murders and Lessons Learned”组合 Luniz 第一张的大名曲 “I Got 5 On It”是 Mobb Music 的代表作,最好听的第二张 “Lunitik Muzik”(1997) 首首经典,不仅集结了湾区众多 rapper,与 8Ball & MJG 的合作也很出色,专辑中有当时南方地区的代表制作人 Mike Dean, N.O. Joe 参与制作;组合 3X Krazy 和成员之一 Keak da Sneak 从 90s 一直活跃到 00s Hyphy 时代,与南方制作人也有不少合作;我个人非常喜欢的 Rappin' 4-Tay 在当时的 Mobb 街头音乐场景中展示出稀有的真心内容,推荐专辑 “Don't Fight the Feelin'”(1994);‘90s 其他可以了解的 rapper: Mac Dre(1992 年在监禁时打电话录制的 “Back in da Hood”),Seagram(前三张都是在 Rap-a-lot 发行),Dru Down(皮条的另一代表人物),Mac Mall,Celly Cel,JT the Bigga Figga(Get Low Playaz 兄弟伙,太能出了),这个时期的 Mobb Music 街头场景产出众多,无法一一说道;被称为“The Black Panther of Hip Hop”的 Paris, 始终如一的黑豹子孙,在音乐中坚持表达抗争和强烈的黑人意识,对社会问题和政治进行激烈抨击,他也是一位伟大的制作人,作为导师为 The Conscious Daughters 监制制作,带出了她们成为了日后 Bay Area 女性的榜样;Episode playlist:Too Short - “Oakland”Sly & The Family Stone - “Family Affair”Tower of Power - “What is Hip?”Too Short - “The Ghetto”Too Short - “I'm A Player”2Pac & Digital Underground - “I Get Around”Digital Underground - “On One”E-40 & The Click - “Captain Save A Hoe”Spice 1 - “187 He Wrote”RBL Posse - “Don't Give Me No Bammer Weed”Luniz, 8 Ball&MJG 0 “In My Nature”3X Krazy - “Keep It On The Real”Rappin' 4-Tay - “I'll Be Around”Too $hort - “Never Talk Down “ft. Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Dong Zou from AcroGarden. Dong has a PhD in chemistry and worked for several pharmaceutical companies in various therapeutic areas including anti-inflammatory, cancer, pain management and anti-infectious diseases. He developed his first interest in marine invertebrates when he was working as a post doc at the University of Virginia. He has been in aquarium hobby since he was in college and he got into the saltwater hobby in 2004 after setting up his first marine fish tank for a Nemo and after he discovered the Boston Reefers Society. About 10 years ago, he cofounded his first company on drug discovery. Soon after that, he was able to combine his passion for coral and his experience in the pharmaceutical industry and cofounded a new company, eCove BioMarine. This company focused on aquaculture coral for drug discovery and bone grafting. His current company, AcroGarden Inc, was then founded to hold the intellectual properties and to study coral farming. AcroGarden is now his primary focus. The company produces aqua-cultured coral, mainly SPS, for the hobby.
Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Walt Smith, who is the founder of Walt Smith International. The company's operations are based in Fiji and they have played a pivotal role in supplying ornamental coral and fish to aquariums and hobbyists worldwide, while advocating for the preservation of Fiji's rich marine ecosystems. Many of you probably have heard of Walt, he has been a pioneer in the Marine Ornamental industry since 1972, and thus he has quite an extensive background in the reef keeping world.

This week, we are recapping our experience attending History Of The Bay, an event organized by fellow Bay Area hip-hop podcaster Dregs One. While it did not result in any usable interviews, DBRP co-hosts David Ma and Nate LeBlanc were glad to spend an afternoon immersed in the Bay Area's unique musical culture and to see performances from rappers such as Rappin' 4-Tay, B-Legit, and Kamaiyah. For this week's interview, DBRP host Demone Carter caught up with recurring guest and brilliant rapper Nappy Nina. Getting to know Nina and watching her level up her career has been one of the highlights of creating our show. We have been checking in with her in person and online for the past few years, and we are excited about her new collaborative project with producer Swarvy Nothing Is My Favorite Thing, out now. Dad Bod Rap Pod is produced by Demone Carter. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Brought to you by the good homies at Stony Island Audio
