In this lively conclusion to a three-part series looking at myths about Catholicism, Greg and Ed the Protestant unpack how "Hollywood"—from Reformation-era propaganda to modern films, novels, and TV—ingrains unconscious biases against Catholicism through tropes like fat, greedy bishops, ugly scheming monks, mean ruler-wielding nuns, and spooky cathedrals that twist sacred awe into dread. They challenge the pervasive vibe that nobody truly believed the faith, portraying it as an elaborate con everyone winked at, questioning how such a "scam" could endure for centuries with genuine devotion from saints, martyrs, and everyday believers. Drawing on the "Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect" and personal anecdotes—like Protestant pastors' misconceptions and the absurd "candle-lighting priest" cliché—they highlight how these visceral impressions hinder apologetics, much like racial stereotypes, and urge listeners to investigate the Church firsthand beyond media distortions and "common knowledge" to discover authentic faith. Support this ministry so more people can consider Catholicism! Website: https://www.consideringcatholicism.com/ Email: consideringcatholicism@gmail.com

If you've been a Reformed Christian for any amount of time, odds are you've probably heard some half truths about our theological tradition. The truth is, there are a lot of caricatures and misconceptions out there. Often times, these come from outside the Reformed camp, but even sometimes from within. And sometimes, they are rooted in reality, albeit not entirely. So for this week's episode, join us as we work through what Reformed theology is by examining what it isn't. Sarah and her gf got a caricature, and it is truly the stuff of nightmares. We debate whether the "artist" was intentionally making it awful, why he wanted to give her gigantic boobs, and what message he was trying to send. Sarah watched a new series on Netflix and now she is fascinated by equine social culture, but is simultaneously against horse racing. We do have some questions about horse transportation--not when you ride a horse, but when the horse takes a road trip to get to the next race. We discuss an algae bloom that is turning seals into rabid beasts and Sarah thinks it's a foreboding about the apocalypse. We learn about Alice Ball who cured a killer disease, but the credit was given to some douchebags who didn't do a darn thing. Plus, we hear about a pest that is terrorizing a town and Susie somehow relates it to how she's a pretty randy gal.

There's been a question gnawing at fans of Charles Eisenstein: what does he really feel about RFK Jr's pivot to Trump? The always aspiring poet-philosopher was hired as a messaging advisor to Bobby, after all. We've spotted little fragments of Eisenstein's exceptionally long essays sneaking their way into Bobby's speeches. There was some influence, for sure, even after Charles went on multiple Costa Rican sabbaticals right in the middle of campaign season and apparently cut his consulting rate down from $21k per month, perhaps out of the goodness of the heart he knows is possible. And yet, for weeks after Bobby jumped the shark, Charles remained silent. Until now, that is. With the publication of his recent 6,711-word essay, “Shades of Many Colors,” Eisenstein finally breaks his silence and lands firmly on the side of…well, we're not quite sure. But one thing that's emerged is Charles's penchant for not crediting the source of some of his galaxy-brained ideas. Today, we'll look at some of what Charles says in his latest opus, and try to figure out what exactly he's saying. In this episode, Zekun Sun and Chaz Firestone from Johns Hopkins University join Under the Cortex to discuss their new paper in Psychological Science titled “Caricaturing Shapes in Visual Memory.” The conversation with APS's Özge G. Fischer Baum reviews how our visual system uses templates and exaggerates the basic features of objects in memory. The authors describe a series of experiments that show how visual memory is more complex than previously thought and that visual details in memory are not always lost. Kyle Edgell started drawing caricatures in a bar. For fun. She never considered the talent she had to capture a likeness and connect with people a product to be “sold”…until a life-changing request to draw at a company picnic as entertainment allowed her to gift the drawings to her subjects and be paid for it. Her insight and ability to encourage others through her art and humor grew into a career that has spanned over 20 years. Edgell has a gift for presentation that instigates laughter, whether in a homeless shelter or attending conferences at 5 star Resort Hotels. Her philosophy of life and art has helped her meet the daily and unexpected challenges of cancer, the death of loved ones and ADD. She now creates multifaceted presentations that incorporate live drawing, speaking, message visualization that will help your team translate obstacles into opportunities. When optimism is rekindled using humor and creativity it will inspire practical strategies that will energize your corporate culture. Kyle Edgell is an Artist, Speaker and Entertainer with a little bit of wit. She received her BFA from Syracuse University and lives in Roanoke Virginia. She is on the Board of Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway and is a member of the Association for Applied Therapeutic Humor. https://www.kyleedgell.com/

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the fact that as culture becomes less and less rooted in Christianity, and people (sadly) have more and more encounters with Christians who are not very Christlike, misconceptions and caricatures of the Christian faith seem to be growing. Today's discussion, which was a listener-submitted topic, will walk through four of the most common caricatures in today's culture. Episode Links Here are some series given by Dr. White at Mecklenburg Community Church related to the caricatures covered in today's discussion that you may be interested in taking a look at: “The Science of God” “Astrophysics… for People Who Are Open to God” “Don't Check Your Brains at the Door” “When God Makes Us Laugh” “Why?” And then here are a few past podcast episodes that you can go back and listen to in case you missed them that may add to today's discussion: CCP103: On the Sudden Rise of LGBTQ CCP92: On Challenges to Believing the Bible CCP63: On Why Christians Are So Mean CCP49: On Faith vs. Science Finally, here are two books that were mentioned in the conversation for you: A Mind for God by James Emery White The Gift of Pain: Why We Hurt and What We Can Do About It by Philip Yancey and Paul Brand For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday.
