Why does work feel so empty right now?  Like…we followed the rules and did the hustle.  We even swallowed parts of ourselves to survive professionally, and yet, here we are grieving something we can't quite name. I often say that the most interesting things about me have nothing to do with my career, and it's nice when those things have time to shine, y'know? I sat down with Ayanna Kelly to dig into the hard stuff: why we're all grieving the workplace we thought we'd have, why monetizing our passions sometimes kills the joy, and what it actually means to decenter work from our identity when we've spent our whole lives tying our worth to our job titles. She shares about her misdiagnosis where she was erroneously institutionalized as well as how art has given her a voice, even when she hasn't wanted to verbalize. She even shares about the time she experienced physical violence in the classroom because someone lacked compassion for her neurodivergence. We explore the importance of representation, the journey to diagnosis, the impact of race on autism, and the cultural aspects of neurodivergence. The conversation emphasizes the need for empathy and understanding in a world that often overlooks the unique experiences of neurodivergent individuals.Key Points:Neurodivergent advocacy is evolving beyond just accommodations.Art is a beautiful outlet for expressing emotions and thoughts.Representation is crucial for Black autistic individuals, especially young ones.Being undiagnosed can lead to a lifelong search for identity.Cultural aspects significantly influence the experience of autism.Autistic burnout is distinct and can have lasting effects.Community support is essential for neurodivergent individuals.Empathy is needed to understand the challenges faced by neurodivergent people.Race plays a critical role in the experiences of autistic individuals.Education on neurodivergence should include cultural competence.Helpful Links:Follow Ayanna across ALL social platforms at @phenomenallyautisticConnect with Ayanna and all her projects: https://linktr.ee/PhenomenallyautisticHire me to speak or as your personal coach! sheldongayisbugn.comFree GroupMe Community for Talented and Gifted adults: https://groupme.com/join_group/108040800/igLaxqNGND Connect - Online community for neurodivergent people: ndconnect.appUmbrella ND - Non-profit focused on neurodivergent advocacy: https://umbrellaopensdoors.org/Submit your Questions or Misunderstood Insights: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSelanG1R71TcGjzHIyVW1f8fkE7MaWx-D2j7OtHsIGrdQhi_Q/viewform?usp=sf_linkKeywords: neurodivergence, autism, representation, black community, art, healing, social justice, advocacy, mental health, cultural aspects, bipolarIntro and Outro music provided by byrdversion1 - "Understand" from the album Nevermore Hosted on Acast. A mythic love story set in Trinidad, Ayanna Lloyd Banwo's radiant debut is a masterwork of lush imagination and exuberant storytelling—a spellbinding and hopeful novel about inheritance, loss, and love's seismic power to heal.In the old house on a hill, where the city meets the rainforest, Yejide's mother is dying. She is leaving behind a legacy that now passes to Yejide: one St Bernard woman in every generation has the power to shepherd the city's souls into the afterlife. But after years of suffering her mother's neglect and bitterness, Yejide is looking for a way out. Raised in the countryside by a devout Rastafarian mother, Darwin has always abided by the religious commandment not to interact with death. He has never been to a funeral, much less seen a dead body. But when the only job he can find is grave digging, he must betray the life his mother built for him in order to provide for them both. Newly shorn of his dreadlocks and his past, and determined to prove himself, Darwin finds himself adrift in a city electric with possibility and danger. Yejide and Darwin will meet inside the gates of Fidelis, an ancient and sprawling cemetery, where the dead lie uneasy in their graves and a reckoning with fate beckons them both.

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Ever watched a dream job slip through your fingers because of nerves and tech chaos, then found a way to win it back? That's the heart of our conversation with Ayanna, a determined trainer who went from CrossFit and PT settings to a full-time role at Lifetime Fitness—after a botched remote interview and a bold, make-good workout that changed everything. We dig into the difference between reading a cert and becoming a coach. Live, interactive learning built her confidence: anatomy that matters, programming that works on the floor, and real-time feedback from a community of trainers at clubs like Lifetime and Equinox. You'll hear how case studies, avatars, and practical assignments created a loop of learn, apply, and refine that paid off when she faced a high-stakes practical. Instead of overcomplicating things, she stuck to assessments, clean progressions, and clear cues—proof that fundamentals beat flash.Once hired, the work shifted to member engagement. Ayanna shares how she walked the floor with purpose, offered quick wins without pressure, and used simple progressions to move people beyond stale routines. We compare the career math at different gyms, why Lifetime's early support helps new trainers thrive, and how pricing confidence grows when clients invest in 12 to 36 sessions. We also outline a repeatable plan: mirror top performers' activity, double your availability, script your first five minutes, and track client wins that turn into stories and referrals. If you're trying to break into a top club or rebuild momentum after a setback, this episode gives you a blueprint: apologize fast, add value immediately, ask for specific feedback, and keep going until you get a firm no. Subscribe for more real-world tactics, share this with a trainer who needs a push, and leave a review to tell us the bold move you'll make this week.Want to ask us a question? Ayanna Nicole Thomas didn't follow a traditional path to Broadway—but that's exactly what makes her story so compelling. After growing up between the Bronx and LA, she eventually made her way back to New York to study musical theatre. But right before her senior year, she booked her Broadway debut in How to Dance in Ohio—a show that celebrates neurodivergence and gave her a sense of belonging she didn't expect. Now, she's playing Rose Granger-Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, bringing her own warmth and humor to a character born from one of the world's most beloved franchises. In this conversation, Ayanna opens up about being diagnosed with ADHD and autism, and how that diagnosis helped her better understand her brain and her process. She shares how she uses Play-Doh and fidget toys backstage, what it was like to be a Broadway swing, and how she balances structure with spontaneity in a show filled with choreography, magic, and fireballs. She's charming, thoughtful, and not afraid to let her Bronx roots shine through. Ayanna Nicole Thomas is currently starring as Rose Granger-Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in How to Dance in Ohio and studied musical theatre at the Manhattan School of Music. A lifelong performer with a deep love of musicals and jazz, she's also a passionate advocate for neurodivergent representation onstage. A glorious ode to sound system culture. For her RA Podcast, Brooklyn-based DJ Ayanna Heaven celebrates vibrations echoing down the ages, connecting seven decades of trailblazers and trendsetters. It's a soundtrack we've timed with an eye to that golden late summer run of Notting Hill Carnival, Brooklyn's West Indian Day Parade and several crucial dates in the Jamaican calendar. Since 2020, the Brooklyn-based DJ, ethnomusicologist, dancehall advocate and promoter has held down two shows on the city's most popular stations: the monthly "Sounds of Heaven" on The Lot and biweekly "Across 110th Street" on WKCR. That's roughly 72 hours of radio every month. Light work for Heaven, though, whose sound traverses the limitlessly fertile ground of reggae, dancehall, funk, soul and beyond. From Sly & Robbie, Aswad and Vybz Kartel through contemporary heaters and reskins of platinum-plated standards like "No Games" and "Sun Is Shining," RA.950 is a story of a thriving culture, grounded in the past yet with intentions set firmly on the future. @ayanna-heaven Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/950
