NOTICE: This weekly show is now part of the "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" daily podcast, which you can find at SiouxFallsLive.com, MidwestSportsPlus.com, and most podcast platforms like the one you find here! So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! Missouri Valley Conference football play starts with a bang. We think.No. 17 South Dakota's visit to No. 1 North Dakota State was a definite Top 5 "circle this on the calendar" in the offseason, considering the Coyotes' "we have arrived" comeback win over in last season's finale to share the MVFC title with the Bison and South Dakota State. Plus, perhaps you remember, USD beat NDSU the last time the teams played in Fargo. Yeah, you probably remember. The Bison sure do, and they've had an extra week to prepare for revenge (perhaps you heard). But considering USD's slippery 1-2 start before a resounding win over Drake on Saturday, how loud of a bang is this 2025 MVFC opener?Happy Hour host John Gaskins and Sioux Falls Live sports editor Matt Zimmer describe their interest and intrigue in the game, and how competitive we should expect the Coyotes to be. Is the Aidan Bouman that at times torched the Bison back after a slow 2025 start? Can we really be impressed, or the Yotes intimidated, by NDSU's 139-17 obliteration of their three opponents and their combined 3-8 record — The Citadel (1-3), Tennessee State (1-2), and Southeast Missouri State (1-3)?The attention then turns to a "what to look for" discussion on No. 2 SDSU against Mercyhurst after its bye week. Plus, of course, a scratching of the mosquito bite that is "how do we compare SDSU and USD after they each hosted Drake in back-to-back games?"What does Carson Wentz have to do to threaten J.J. McCarthy's starting job with the Vikings once McCarthy is healthy enough to play? Or should it be McCarthy's job no matter what? And, did you catch the NFL Today's 50th anniversary show featuring orgininal host Brent Musberger? One of our two hosts did and gave his review. This leads us down the rabbit hole of the NFL's most famous broadcasters of the last 50 years and how fair of evaluation they get from viewers (we're talking about you Joe Buck, one of the most hated men in Minnesota). Finally, some baseball. Zim thinks the Canaries "choked" away their first American Association championship in 17 years. Is that fair? The two dig in, plus look forward to a possible Birds follow-up run. How difficult will it be? Who should we expect back in Sioux Falls to try?Finally... Zim thought "The Natural" sucked.

We're are back going over the top sports media stories, newsmakers, etc. from over the weekend on the newest "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast!"Host T.J. Rives and Co-Host Mike Gill of the "The Sports Bash" weekday afternoon show in Atlantic City, NJ return with their takes on:it was the celebration of the 50th anniversary on CBS' "NFL Today" show that debuted in 1975. The network did great tributes to it with Brent Musberger in the studio and the guys go over it.Then, the NFL had some CRAZY endings with blocked field goals in Philly, Tampa and Cleveland. The guys go over the games and play highlights from Merril Reese on the Eagles call and even, T.J. filling in for legend Gene Deckerhoff on the Bucs radio call of their dramatic win. Also, how pitiful is the Monday Night Football doubleheader for ESPN/ABC next week?! Yuck. And, the guys analyze Fox Sports' Greg Olsen appearing to get aggravated with Dave Portnoy of the new "Wake Up Barstool" show on FS1 cable during their live interview segment Monday morning that he's being PAID to be on with them? Was this legit or perhaps contrived to help get some audience going for the show? The guys also talk some college football and the tough weekend for the lack of many close games. However, this week wth Notre Dame at Arkansas, Oregon at Penn State and Alabama at Georgia, there are massive matchups. There's also more clarity on ESPN rolling out the "Inside the NBA" studio coverage for the upcoming season starting in November. Mike has more on that. And, the boys wonder if Bruce Pearl "retiring" from Auburn in college basketball with their season starting soon means he's headed to the TV studio and maybe with CBS and leading to their March coverage? It's all on the "LWOS Media Podcast" and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple/Spreaker/Spotify, etc.!

The incomparable Jayne Kennedy ("Plain Jayne: A Memoir") joins us for an intimate conversation about a career that defied expectations and left an indelible mark on both sports broadcasting and American culture. Raised in small-town Ohio and catapulted to national attention through beauty pageants and professional ambitions, Kennedy soon found herself in early 1970s Hollywood — landing a succession of parts on TV variety shows, commercials, and film. But it was her move to CBS's The NFL Today in 1978 that cemented her place in television history. For two groundbreaking seasons, Kennedy sat alongside Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder on what was then the most influential NFL pregame show in America. As one of the first women — and among the very first Black women — to co-anchor a national sports broadcast, she brought poise, charisma, and depth to a space long dominated by men. Kennedy reflects candidly on what it was like to navigate the high-pressure world of network television, from the excitement of breaking barriers to the behind-the-scenes tensions that eventually led to her controversial departure in 1980. In a conversation that spans both triumphs and challenges, Kennedy shares how her time on The NFL Today shaped her career, the lessons she carried into later endeavors, and why her story still resonates in today's conversations about representation in media. The Mets and Yankees both suffered frustrating losses. Gio and Jerry agree the Yankees' offensive struggles against Joe Ryan are déjà vu. Gio believes Aaron Boone will be fired if the Yankees miss the playoffs, while Jerry is unsure. A positive Mets fan from LA, Gio's critique of the Infinity Sports Network talent draft, and C-Lo's updates are also discussed. Gio is hesitant to ask Boomer for a favor. David Wright dislikes the Mets' home pinstripes. C-Lo explains a TikTok trend Brian Daboll referenced. Taylor Swift discussed her relationship with Travis and Jason Kelce on their podcast. Eddie undermines Gio's caddy story. The Moment of the Day: "Down goes Straw" and Jerry is "our Jeff McNeil." The hour concludes with discussions about watching Hard Knocks and CBS celebrating "The NFL Today."
Hour 1 Returning from California, Gio and Jerry discuss the Mets' 6-0 lead blown last night, attributing the loss to David Peterson's poor performance and the team's recent pitching struggles. They question the Mets' future, especially with the pitching staff. C-Lo's update covers the Mets' loss, the Brewers' 12th consecutive win, the Yankees' inability to sweep, Giancarlo Stanton's strong play, injuries at the Jets and Giants joint practice, Breece Hall's contract extension comments, and Jerry Jones's experimental drug trial. The hour ends with Gio and Jerry still struggling with the Mets' ongoing issues. Hour 2 Gio and Jerry discuss their trip to Pebble Beach and their golf games. C-Lo provides an update, and they talk about the Mets' blown lead and Pete Alonso's out at the plate. C-Lo explains the Brewers' free burger promotion. They also discuss Cam Schlittler's early exit, Paul Goldschmidt's potential injury, and a spat between The 7 Line and BT & Sal. Finally, Gio praises Jaxson Dart as an NFL QB prospect, and a caller thanks them for the Pebble Beach trip. Hour 3 Gio thinks Jerry will have an issue with Pete Alonso writing “down goes Straw” on his 253rd home run ball but Jerry is ok with it. Gio says there was no reason at all to include that. They agree that Pete definitely didn't have any negative intentions when he wrote it. Gio wasn't a big fan of Gary Cohen's call of the home run but Jerry liked it. C-Lo returns for an update but first Gio asks him to chime in on the Pete and Darryl Strawberry debate. The Mets and Yankees are a combined 6-17 since the trade deadline. They're hanging onto playoff spots by one game. It's been a dark two weeks. Chris “Mad Dog” Russo was bothered by the Mets celebration of Pete Alonso's 253rd HR and Gary Cohen's call of it. Gio doesn't agree with Dog but he thinks the pregame celebration after the record-breaking game is unnecessary. In the final segment of the hour, Gio and Jerry wonder if Pete's home run ball will stay in the Mets Hall of Fame at Citi Field or at his home. A caller wants Jeremy Hefner fired. Gio says it could happen after the season but Jerry would put the blame on the players and David Stearns before Hefner. Hour 4 The Mets and Yankees both suffered frustrating losses.
