Barry Katz shares his insights on comedy's past, present, and future. Hear his story. More About Barry Katz: Barry Katz is an Emmy and Grammy nominated TV-film-record producer, talent manager, and podcast host. Katz is universally known for representing iconic artists like Louie Anderson, Ken Jeong, Andy Dick, Hasan Minhaj, and Mike Epps, giving the first quality stage time in New York City and Boston to future stars like Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Sarah Silverman, Anthony Clark, Dave Attell, Bobcat Goldthwait, Dana Gould, Timothy Olyphant, Denis Leary, and the late Patrice O'Neal, as well as helping launch the careers of some of the most extraordinary comedy artists in the business—including Dave Chappelle, Nick Swardson, Louie CK, Felipe Esparza, Bill Burr, Frank Caliendo, Marc Maron, Whitney Cummings, Bill Bellamy, Judah Friedlander, Wanda Sykes, Bert Kreischer, Jeff Dye, Jim Gaffigan, Dane Cook, Steve Byrne, Jeffrey Ross, Neil Brennan, and former and present SNL stars Darrell Hammond, Jay Mohr, Melissa Villasenor, Jim Breuer, and Tracy Morgan. Throughout his career, Katz has sold 39 out of 40 stand-up comedy specials he produced and has brokered an unprecedented 100 TV development deals, created 3 television shows, and executive produced over 50 different specials, documentaries, reality shows, and scripted series including the YouTube TV produced Telethon for America (with Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom, Jennifer Lawrence, Pete Davidson, Alicia Keys, Charlize Theron, Ray Romano, Chelsea Handler, and Jane Fonda), NBC's Whitney, Netflix's The Road Trick, FOX's Action, HBO's Tourgasm, Showtime's Jay Mohr: Happy. And A Lot, History Channel's Houdini: Unlocking the Mystery, TBS's Frank TV, Comedy Central's Whitney Cummings: Money Shot, CBS' Welcome to New York (Letterman's first produced sitcom), HBO's Heidi Fleiss: The Would-be Madam of Crystal, the syndicated Bellamy/Tim Meadows/Jon Lovitz/Vivica Fox sitcom Mr. Box Office, and 7 seasons of the Emmy-nominated NBC series Last Comic Standing. Katz started his involvement in the film business when he helped Chappelle and Neal Brennan (who eventually went on to create Chappelle's Show) sell the cult classic Half Baked to Universal Studios and went on to produce several films after that, including Employee of the Month (starring Jessica Simpson and Cook), Good Luck Chuck (starring Jessica Alba), My Best Friend's Girl (starring Kate Hudson and Alec Baldwin), I Killed JFK (about the only living person in history to admit to killing Kennedy), and Misery Loves Comedy (starring Tom Hanks, Amy Schumer, Judd Apatow, and Larry David). Katz was the first manager to work with a comedy artist to use social media to accelerate their career, with Dane Cook. At the height of his popularity, he was able to press a button on his computer and sell out 2 shows in one night at Boston Garden and 2 shows in one night at Madison Square Garden for a total of 75,000 tickets sold in less than a week—which had never been done before. In the recording world, he has produced Grammy nominated, multiple gold, platinum, and double platinum albums, while becoming the only manager/producer to debut a comedy album in Billboard's top 5 national charts–twice. In other facets of the business, Katz was one of the driving forces and co-founders of Comedy Dynamics, which has become one of the largest independent comedy production and distribution companies in the world. Additionally, he was involved in the original sale of the Emmy-nominated Comedy Central Roasts to the network, which has become one of the longest running, most profitable, annual specials franchises in the history of TV. https://www.barrykatz.com/

We are back with a new episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week, I'm chatting with Jamie Barty, VFX Supervisor at FuseFX, about his work on various projects, including Prime Video's wonderfully weird 'I'm A Virgo'.British-born, but based in Fuse's Canada office, Jamie has worked on a huge array of shows for the company, including ‘The Orville', ‘Fort Salem', ‘La Brea', 'Snowpiercer' and ‘Upload', some of which we delve into during the interview. However, we begin by chatting about his more recent project, ‘I'm A Virgo', which is available now on Prime Video. From director Boots Riley, ‘I'm A Virgo' is a fantastical coming-of-age story of a 13-foot-tall man, Cootie, who is hidden in Oakland, CA, but escapes to experience the world. On his journey, he forms friendships, finds love, encounters awkward situations, and so much more. The series stars Jharrel Jerome as Cootie, Brett Gray, Mike Epps and more.FuseFX collaborated closely with Boots to create the alternative reality of Cootie. The team implemented many in-camera and VFX tricks to give Cootie his impressive 13-ft tall stature, including miniatures, puppets, full digi-double characters, CG props, shrinking of other characters, and camera/compositing trickery. The team strived to achieve a realistic blend of practical in-camera effects with CG and digital compositing.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Hosted on Acast. We should call this week's episode "Celebrity Couples Therapy," because we address these burning celebrity relationship questions: Why did Kevin Hart and Mike Epps finally bury the hatchet and why were they mad in the first place? Did Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods kiss and make up? Is Lori Harvey adding Quavo to her body count? Does Nick Cannon have a snowball's-chance-in-hell of getting back with Mariah Carey? Why won't Future keep Ciara and Russell Wilson's names out of his mouth? Plus, what to do about Tokyo Toni, Blac Chyna, Rob Kardashian, & Tyga?Hi darling, did you love the episode? Well, good news! Down to Watch is ready for a big dang summer! Dan and Raul are scanning the sunny horizon for the most interesting and unique shows during the lean months of the television year, and the new Prime series I'm a Virgo is an oasis of originality. A giant black teenager grows up watching a world of exaggerated culture and politics from the safety of his hidden backyard. His parents fear a world that hunts down giants, but a teen's gonna teen, and soon enough, Cootie, the 13-foot-tall 19-year-old, is riding with friends, smoking weed, and tackling a world that wants to use him. Walton Goggins and Mike Epps lend impressive performances to class up the joint, but this is an absurdist comedy with many strange layers & angles. Strange enough for you? I am really excited for you to hear my conversation with legendary comedian and storyteller DC Benny Stand Up is a daily podcast. I book, host, edit, post and promote new episodes with brilliant guests every day. Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 740 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous souls. In the hard-hitting New York comedy world, D.C. Benny is a heavyweight contender. His nickname “D.C.” was given to him by Harlem's legendary host; “Uncle” Jimmy Mack, who sadly passed away in the 2014 Tracy Morgan car accident. Benny's unusual style of telling autobiographical stories, inhabited by original characters has been sharpened for almost thirty years as a performer. His personal essays, stories, and articles have been featured in New York Magazine, The New York Observer, Narratively, and Heeb Magazine. Benny's diverse fan base know him from a wide range of appearances; his “White Boy Rips The Apollo” clip with almost ten million views, his Comedy Central Presents, one the of the network's highest-rated half-hour specials, as a top eight finalist on NBC's Last Comic Standing, his role as Caesar in John Singleton's feature film “Illegal Tender”, as “Chaz” on the soap opera “As The World Turns”, and national commercials for Verizon, Dell, Volkswagon, Wendy's, AIG, as well as the Budweiser “How You Doin'?” superbowl spots campaign. His weekly comedic story-telling show, Urban Myth, became an underground staple, where performers such as Dave Chappelle, Robert Kelley, Jim Gaffigan, Jim Norton, Jay Oakerson, Kevin Hart, Mike Epps, and SNL's Dean Edwards would tell their true, funny, stories, to a packed house at The Zinc, a downtown New York jazz bar. Currently, Benny co-hosts the story-telling podcast “Tall But True” with his friend, Cash Cab's Ben Bailey, where guests like Ray Romano, Dom Irrera, Colin Quinn, Adam Ferrara, Artie Lange, and Bill Burr share funny stories and talk smack. Benny lives in Brooklyn where he fiddles around with old Land Rovers when he is supposed to be helping his wife run her natural skincare business. He has a dog named Grits and two cats who prefer that he not share their personal information in this bio.
