In this episode, we delve into three key themes that emerge as the story of the Bible unfolds. First, we explore the significance of the Tabernacle and the role of the priests in mediating between God and the people of Israel. We discuss the rituals, sacrifices, and the need for atonement within this sacred space. Next, we examine how God's commandments in the Law served as tests of faith and obedience, leading us to reflect on the purpose and limitations of the Law. Finally, we discover that true righteousness comes not from human effort or lineage, but through faith in God and His promises.Readings: Deuteronomy 8:1-20, Hebrews 11:1-31, Romans 4:1-8, James 2:14-26Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App!Support the show: Tap here to become a monthly supporter!Review the show: Tap here!Want to go deeper?...Download the Bible Brief App!iPhone: App Store LinkAndroid: Play Store LinkWebsite: biblebrief.orgInstagram: @biblelitTwitter: @bible_litFacebook: @biblelitEmail the Show: biblebrief@biblelit.orgThis episode primarily uses the ESV Bible translation, but may also use CSB, NASB, and NKJV.Search Tags: bible, beginner, bible verse, god, verse of the day, prayer, jesus, bible study, scripture, learn, bible introduction, introduction, intro to the bible, introduction to the bible, beginner bible, bible overview, how to read the bible, what is the bible about, bible story, bible stories, what is the bible, ...

In the Nation Era, we continue the story of the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Land of Canaan. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, a new generation emerges, determined to obey God's commands and learn from the mistakes of the prior generation. Moses delivers am encouraging speech, reminding the Israelites of their duties and responsibilities as they enter the Promised Land. He tells of the blessings that come with obedience to God's Law and curses that come from forgetting and disobeying the Law. As Joshua takes over leadership, God demonstrates His power through miraculous signs, including the parting of the Jordan River and the fall of the fortified city of Jericho. Readings: Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Joshua 5:13-15, Joshua 6:1-21Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App!Support the show: Tap here to become a monthly supporter!Review the show: Tap here!Want to go deeper?...Download the Bible Brief App!iPhone: App Store LinkAndroid: Play Store LinkWebsite: biblebrief.orgInstagram: @biblelitTwitter: @bible_litFacebook: @biblelitEmail the Show: biblebrief@biblelit.orgThis episode primarily uses the ESV Bible translation, but may also use CSB, NASB, and NKJV.Search Tags: bible, beginner, bible verse, god, verse of the day, prayer, jesus, bible study, scripture, learn, bible introduction, introduction, intro to the bible, introduction to the bible, beginner bible, bible overview, how to read the bible, what is the bible about, bible story, bible stories, what is the bible, ...

"The Church on Earth," otherwise known as "The Church Militant," is the historic idea of God's own people, spiritually prepared and armed, who will resist and eventually overcome evil. We find early instructions for Israel to live this reality in Moses' parting speech in Deuteronomy 4. Ephesians sees righteous living as a manifestation of these same promises for God to empower His people against demonic forces of evil. And Jesus Himself embodies that power that routinely overcomes evil through His healing ministry as well as His Passion. For us today facing these same forces of evil, there is nothing stronger than offering prayer in the Spirit with fervor and faith. May we find these examples and exhortations encouraging in our lifelong struggle against evil. Readings: Deuteronomy 4:1-9; Psalm 15; Ephesians 6:10-20; Mark 7:1-23

As the evangelical world rediscovers the Jewishness of Jesus, we enrich our understanding of His full human identity. But it can be difficult to understand his "Jewishness" in contrast to his contemporaries, most notably among the Pharisees. When we find him accused of breaking Torah (Mark 2), and when he criticizes Pharisaical practices in turn, we are thrown into the same confusing debate alongside his disciples: what kind of Jewish rabbi is Jesus? From the Fifth Sunday of Easter, this sermon draws parallels between Deuteronomy 4:32-40, John 15:1-8, and 1 John 4:7-21, emphasizing the profound significance of history and love in the context of faith in action–or faithfulness. Through Moses's words, listeners are urged to reflect on the unparalleled actions of God throughout history, contrasting His active involvement with the inactivity of false gods. The passage in John calls believers to abide in God's love, producing fruit that glorifies Him. Furthermore, 1 John stresses that love is the defining characteristic of a true disciple, intertwining with obedience to God's commandments. We should examine ourselves whether we truly abide in Him. Without love, we prove we aren't truly among God's disciples. But through God's love acting in the world through us, we can show God to those around us. Readings: Deuteronomy 18:15–20 Psalm 95:1–2, 6–9 1 Corinthians 7:32–35 Mark 1:21–28 Last week, Jesus announced the kingdom of God is at hand. This week, in mighty words and deeds, He exercises His dominion—asserting royal authority over the ruler of this world, Satan (see John 12:31). Notice that today's events take place on the sabbath. The sabbath was to be an everlasting sign—both of God's covenant love for His creation (see Exodus 20:8–11; 31:12–17), and His deliverance of His covenant people, Israel, from slavery (see Deuteronomy 6:12–15). On this sabbath, Jesus signals a new creation—that the Holy One has come to purify His people and deliver the world from evil. “With an unclean spirit” is biblical language for a man possessed by a demon, Satan being the prince of demons (see Mark 3:22). The demons' question: “What have you to do with us?” is often used in Old Testament scenes of combat and judgment (see Judges 11:12; 1 Kings 17:18). And as God by His Word “rebuked” the forces of chaos in creating the world (see Psalms 104:7; Job 26:10–12), and again rebuked the Red Sea so the Israelites could make their exodus (see Psalm 106:9), Mark uses the same word to describe Jesus rebuking the demons (see Mark 4:39; Zechariah 3:2). Jesus is the prophet foretold by Moses in today's First Reading (see Acts 3:22). Though He has authority over heaven and earth (see Daniel 7:14, 27; Revelation 12:10), He becomes one of our own kinsmen. He comes to rebuke the forces of evil and chaos—not only in the world, but in our lives. He wants to make us holy in body and spirit, as Paul says in today's Epistle (see Exodus 31:12). In this liturgy, we hear His voice and “see” His works, as we sing in today's Psalm. And as Moses tells us today, we should listen to Him.

Talkin' 'Bout My Generation We continue our discussion of Matthew 5 as it relates to the followers of Jesus as a community. Ours sins are not just personal issues, but they affect others around us. Jesus emphasizes that it is not enough to adhere to the commandments externally, but obedience includes our attitudes, motivations and imagination. In the Great Commission Jesus tells His disciples to go and teach the nations to obey everything he has commanded. We must not water down His teaching in order to make discipleship less costly. Jesus' challenge will surely animate many in our generation who are bored, discontented and find no purpose in life. 4th September 2022 13th Sunday after Pentecost. When considering discipleship we often fail to take into account the Jewish context of this practice. Young men would attach, or apprentice themselves to a teacher in order to be mentored in the ways of Torah. The goal was obedience leading to holiness. In the New Testament holiness comes through such apprenticeship to Jesus. But as attractive as holiness might be, we often find ourselves facing challenges from our families or culture, and many of us are just tired and it seems too hard. I would like to remind us that Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me … my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matt 11) And despite the challenges along the way we do have the Holy Spirit to help us. Readings: Deuteronomy 30:10–14 Psalm 69:14, 17, 30–31, 33–34, 36–37 Colossians 1:15–20 Luke 10:25–37 We are to love God and our neighbor with all the strength of our being, as the scholar of the Law answers Jesus in this week's Gospel. This command is nothing remote or mysterious—it's already written in our hearts, in the book of Sacred Scripture. “You have only to carry it out,” Moses says in this week's First Reading. Jesus tells His interrogator the same thing: “Do this and you will live.” The scholar, however, wants to know where he can draw the line. That's the motive behind his question, “Who is my neighbor?” In his compassion, the Samaritan in Jesus' parable reveals the boundless mercy of God, Who came down to us when we were fallen in sin, close to dead, unable to pick ourselves up. Jesus is “the image of the invisible God,” this week's Epistle tells us. In Him, the love of God has come very near to us. By the “blood of His Cross”—by bearing His neighbors' sufferings in His own body, being Himself stripped and beaten and left for dead—He saved us from the bonds of sin and reconciled us to God and to one another. Like the Samaritan, He pays the price for us, heals the wounds of sin, pours out on us the oil and wine of the sacraments, and entrusts us to the care of His Church until He comes back for us. Because His love has known no limits, ours cannot either. We are to love as we have been loved, to do for others what He has done for us, joining all things together in His Body, the Church. We are to love like the singer of this week's Psalm—like those whose prayers have been answered, like those whose lives has been saved, who have known the time of His favor, have seen God in His great mercy turn toward us. This is the love that leads to eternal life, the love Jesus commands today of the scholar and of each of us: “Go and do likewise.”

The biblical understanding is that home is in our relationship with God. It's a gift that's on offer, one that we don't have to earn. We enter solely by grace. It's a phenomenal promise, but our residency there depends upon maintaining the relationship. Our readings today teach us what is essential towards that end. Readings: Deuteronomy 11:1-12; Revelation 21:10-22:5; John 14:23-29 Blessed by our teachings? “So, some temptations may be so culturally conditioned that they need to be named as not temptations to something bad at all.  Others truly are harmful to ourselves and others … and .. they are still not referenda on who we are and our worthiness and lovability. They are signs of a deeper hunger that can be sated, a deeper bondage from which we can be free.  And our task – together … always together … is to attend to them so we can get to the wound that really needs to be treated, the hole in our heart that really needs to be filled.” Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 6, 2022 at All Saints Church, Pasadena.
