If there was an aesthetic that defined Australia's rock/pop culture in the 80s then Reg Mombassa was surely a master crafter of it. His band Mental As Anything was heard on radio around the country and it seemed everyone wore a Mambo t-shirt featuring his darkly-comic art.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Reg Mombassa has been making art for almost six decades. He was a founding member of Australian rock group Mental as Anything, and he designed a lot of the artwork featured across the Mambo brand. By the year 2000, his art had become so iconically Australian through Mambo that it was all over the Olympic opening ceremony. He speaks on his enduring creative output, his upcoming gigs (across several bands), his current art exhibition, and how all of the above involve ranting about the state of things.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We interviewed Stephen Coburn at his amazing studio in the artistic community, Headland Artists, at Georges Heights, Mosman. We had a long chat with Stephen about his father, the artist, John Coburn, his days at the National Art School where he met Reg Mombassa and formed the band, Mental As Anything. We heard some great stories about the bans and his time at art school. Stephen is making sculptures for an upcoming sculpture trail at the beautiful Akuna Bay starting November 15th, in conjunction with Sydney Road Gallery and D'Albora Marinas. Be sure to check it out, designed for everyone to interact with and touch! Great for a family day out. Stephen is also a leading conservator and we talked to him about his craft and some interesting information about painting conservation. We also asked him about a past project he was involved with called, Utes in the Paddock, where artists and the community in Ootha, Central NSW was called upon to turn old utes into artworks. It sounded like such a fun thing to be a part of. Thanks for talking to us, Stephen, we could have talked for hours!

Reg Mombassa, also known as Chris O’Doherty, has been exhibiting his paintings and drawings at Sydney’s Watters Gallery, nationally and internationally for over 40 years. In 2007 there was a major survey of his work at the SH Ervin Gallery in Sydney. He is also one of the leaders of a group of artists which created designs for the Mambo surf clothing label in the 80s and 90s. A recent documentary aired on the ABC in Australia looked at those artists and their influential and anti authoritatrian approach. But of course Mombassa is renowned not only as an artist but also a musician. In 1976 he founded the iconic Australian band Mental as Anything with fellow art student Martin Plaza and in 1990 he formed his band Dog Trumpet with his brother Peter O’Doherty. The music in the introduction to this episode is from the song ‘Made in the World’ from their album Medicated Spirits. Mombassa has also had a creative input into major public events such as the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony and Sydney New Year's Eve celebrations and has won awards for his poster and album cover works. His paintings are held in major Australian art institutions including the National Portrait Gallery and the Art Gallery of NSW. Reg Mombassa stepped off a boat as a New Zealander at the age of 17 in 1969. By 2000, his art had become so iconically Australian by being featured all over Mambo t-shirts that it was all over the Olympic opening ceremony. In between, his art college band went on to national, then international success. You might have heard of them: Mental as Anything. Anneli Dufva mötte henne i Sydneys Hyde Park.
A 40 minute conversation with artist, musician, renaissance man Chris O'Doherty aka Reg Mombassa. Chris is perhaps best known for his vibrant design work for surf street wear label Mambo, and for his Mental as Anything alter ego Reg Mombassa. However, Chris has been painting his own unique vision of the Australasian landscape since the early 1970s. The interview takes place at Sydney's SH Ervin Gallery, where Chris takes us on a personal tour of his 30 year retrospective. By turns funny, absurd, & serious.
