New endowed fund to foster next generation of women's health leaders To close the gap between women's health research and other scientific disciplines, Ward and Mari Walstrom of Harbor Springs have made a $1 million gift to bolster education and research in the MSU College of Human Medicine's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology. The Walstrom Family Endowed Women's Health Research Fund is creating an early-career training program to increase the number of scientists and clinicians pursuing a lifelong career focused on women's health care and research. The program pairs medical and graduate students with research teams and will support independent research projects. Four College of Human Medicine early-career graduate students, including one third-year medical student, were recently selected and awarded the endowed funds; each will utilize the philanthropic funds to push forward current research projects, which would not have been otherwise possible. Three Spartans describe the impact the gift will have on women's health. Dr. Richard Leach is professor and chair of the MSU College of Human Medicine's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Health. Shannon Harkins is a PhD candidate and Walstrom fund recipient. And Roksolana Sudyk is a future Spartan MD and Walstrom fund recipient. Conversation Highlights: (0:19) – Leach on the strengths, mission, and evolving excellence of the MSU College of Human Medicine's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology. (5:01) – Leach on the Walstroms and the impact of their gift. (11:24) – Sudyk on her path to MSU, her passion for women's health, and meeting the Walstroms. (15:54) – Harkins on her passion for women's health, her research project, and meeting the Walstroms. (31:02) – Sudyk was attracted to MSU by the College of Human Medicine's focus on women's health and equity. And she describes her research project. Starting with the month of June 2017, we are doing a monthly photo contest on our Facebook group, The Traveling Image Makers’ Corner. We invite the group members to submit one of their best photographs and, at the end of the month, we pick two winners and invite them to come on the show and tell us about their winning images and their photography. The winners for the month of June, Nadja K. Rutkowski and Richard Leach, submitted an aerial photo of the Empire State Building and a poignant portrait of a boy on the streets of an Indian city, respectively. We thought those two stood above the rest, but it was a tough choice, since we got so many amazing submissions. We also talk about Ralph’s new program, the Tour Organizer Training, where he’s teaching everyday people how to organize and lead their own trips, whether around the world, or around the corner. And these don’t have to be photography tours, but can be based on any special interest, such as food, walking, yoga, culinary, music, spirits, history and more.Would you like to be one of the next guests on the podcast? Head over to our Facebook group, ask to join (if you’re not already a member) and look for the post pinned to the top for instructions. The contest for the month of July is still open, but we intend to do a new contest every month. In November, the international community watched as Americans elected Donald Trump the next President, leaving many with unanswered questions about what lies ahead for international development. The United States government is currently the biggest foreign aid donor in the world. Washington’s actions also influence how much other governments contribute to global efforts to eliminate poverty, reduce hunger, empower women and local actors, and increase access to education and healthcare. Trump said little about his stance on international aid throughout his campaign. Republicans have supported foreign aid in the past because it contributes to national security at home, which is also one of Trump’s biggest priorities. However, if his nationalist ideologies and “Make America First” rhetoric are any indicators of future actions, foreign aid — despite representing less than 1% of the national budget — may be on the chopping block. What progress has been made, and what hope is there for the world’s most vulnerable people? Dana Hyde, the CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Richard Leach, the President and CEO of World Food Program USA, will share insights about major achievements in recent years and shifting priorities for the future. Dana Hyde, Chief Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Richard Leach, President and CEO of the World Food Program USA, are in conversation. The discussion is moderated by Jane Wales, CEO, World Affairs and Global Philanthropy Forum; Vice President, The Aspen Institute.
