The JELL-O Gallery - Le Roy NY It's "Staycation Destinations" on Family Life The hometown of Jell-O brand gelatin continues to celebrate the century-plus of fun, wiggly food. The Le Roy Historical Society intentionally chose a more-fitting name for its museum -- this is an art gallery. As you'll hear in this podcast, some of the most prominent displays at the Jell-O Gallery are the forms of colorful and vibrant marketing which introduced the product to the American public, and demonstrated the ease of making instant Jell-O ... so simple even a child could do it. Listen as well for other parts of the history, and other parts of the displays which focus on vehicles and a wider view of Le Roy's history. The Jell-O Gallery is at 23 East Main Street in Le Roy, which is about halfway between Batavia and Rochester. Here is the winner of their 2024 Photo Contest on the Gallery's Facebook page: "Staycation Destinations" airs Fridays on Family Life during the Noon Report and 5 O'Clock Report. Each week, all summer long, we map out a unique opportunity for you to discover somewhere unique, in New York or Pennsylvania --- fairly close to home, and fairly affordable. Previous destinations are linked from www.FamilyLife.org/newspodcasts.

Pro-Palestinian campus protests at universities across the country - including Sac State and Cal Poly Humboldt. Also, Loaves and Fishes responds to a landmark Supreme Court case on homelessness. Finally, Nevada County holds a “Dark Sky Photo Contest.” Pro-Palestinian Campus Protests Hundreds of students have been arrested following pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the country. The demonstrations and encampments are in support of the people of Gaza, and come with demands that universities divest from companies that do business with Israel. The organization behind the national movement is Students for Justice in Palestine, which says it's supporting over 350 solidarity organizations across the U.S., including California state universities like Sacramento State. Cal Poly Humboldt demonstrations escalated over the past week. The university says 25 people were arrested Tuesday morning after protesters occupied two campus buildings and defied orders to disperse last Friday. Cal Poly Humboldt put a hard closure to campus over the weekend that extends through May 10 — the end of the semester. Kianna Znika is a student journalist and the station manager for KRFH, the student-run radio station at Cal Poly Humboldt. Sage Alexander is a reporter with the Times-Standard. Keith David Watenpaugh is a Professor and Director of Human Rights Studies at UC Davis. Sacramento State and Cal Poly Humboldt were both invited to the show but declined. The Cal State Office of the Chancellor declined an interview, but in a statement responded to how CSU campuses are responding to demonstrations, “While the CSU operates as a system, it consists of 23 universities, each with unique sets of circumstances and local jurisdictions. As such, campuses are best qualified to make real-time decisions through a local lens, while understanding they have the support of the Chancellor's Office.” Loaves & Fishes The Supreme Court is still considering the case of Grants Pass v. Johnson, which has been described as the most important case about homelessness in decades. The legal question revolves around whether unhoused people can be criminally punished for sleeping or camping outside, even if adequate shelter is not available. Loaves & Fishes Executive Director Angela Hassell joins Insight to talk about the services her organization provides, and what a Supreme Court decision could mean for the unhoused community here in Sacramento, which faces both a homelessness and affordable housing crisis. Dark Sky Photo Contest There has been a growing “dark skies” push from cities and counties that want to maintain an unadulterated night sky in rural spaces and protected wildlands. In an effort to raise awareness about light pollution, Nevada County launched Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, a photo contest capturing the naturally dark sky and its beauty - as well as the impact bright city lights can have on the landscape. Nevada County District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall and Project Administrator Ariel Lovett join Insight with more on the contest and overall mission.

Located just a few blocks from the zoo on the West Side of Grand Rapids is Kusterer Brauhaus, a Bavarian-style beer hall that features both traditional German-style ales and lagers, and a few locally inspired ones too. For the month of July, their Feelgood Tap is pouring their Modern Weissbier and donating part of the proceeds from every pint to John Ball Zoo. Plan a visit to Kusterer at https://grbrauhaus.com/ Behind the Mitten's executive producer, Phil Tower is usually on the other side of the microphone, but we were lucky enough to have him join us for two segments. On this week's episode we dive into a large number of important topics. First of all, Steve tries to defend the idea of hiring a guide to learn new skills, brush up on old ones, and generally how not to die. We talk about the spread of climbing myths and in an age of instant global information, how climbers still learn bad ideas. Matt and Anna discuss the International Climbers Fest in Lander, WY; their encounter with Peter Croft, and the @ScarpaNA photo contest controversy. We need your help to hold them accountable! We keep the streak going with mention of Tom Randall, and finally tell Steve about the Joe Kinder thing, of which Steve is the last climber on Earth to hear about. Anna ends the show off with a brand new climbing game --- one which we're sure will be a long-time favorite amongst our listeners. Finally, a preview of our new podcast based on the hit TV Show, The O.C. If you have questions for us about climbing, #vanlife, gear.... or what it's like to be pro climbers (we are not pro climbers), whatever, send us a message or email at info@badbetapodcast.com ***Stickers*** If you want some, just ask! Follow us on Facebook or Instagram, subscribe, and tell your friends! We appreciate everyone who listens! (thanks Mom). Our hosts this week: Matt Sapiecha, Anna, Steve and our special guest, Alisha.
