In this podcast we see how the #1 tool of the Devil is self pity; to feel sorry for ourselves, causing defeat. To the contrary, God wants us walking in victory, rejoicing in what Christ has brought us out of. Though we live in a physical body, our struggle is not in the physical, but in the spirit [2 Corinthians 10:3]. Spiritual forces try to pull us down by getting us into self pity. Our weapons are not physical, but powerful, through God, to overcome self defeating attitudes [2 Corinthians 10:4-5]. When the enemy puts a stronghold in your life, the power of God in you can pull it down. We must get rid of negative imaginations to experience victory. The Devil comes only to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus gives an abundant life [John 10:10]. The enemy want to steal our joy, to kill our witness and destroy our ability to evangelize. Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... Psalm 30 (selected verses) 1 I will extol thee, O Lord; for THOU hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. 2 O Lord my God, I cried unto THEE, and THOU hast healed me. 3 O Lord, THOU hast brought up my soul from the grave: THOU hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. 4 Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of HIS (the elect of God), and give thanks at the remembrance of HIS holiness. 5 For HIS anger endureth but a moment; in HIS favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. 6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. 7 Lord, by THY favour THOU hast made my mountain to stand strong: THOU didst hide THY face, and I was troubled. 8 I cried to THEE, O Lord; and unto the Lord I made supplication. 9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise THEE? shall it declare THY truth? 10 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me: Lord, be THOU my helper. 11 THOU hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: THOU hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; 12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to THEE, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto THEE for ever. *** Psalm 31 (selected verses) 1 In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in THY righteousness. 2 Bow down THINE ear to me; deliver me speedily: be THOU my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. 3 For THOU art my rock and my fortress; therefore for THY name's sake lead me, and guide me. 4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for THOU art my strength. 5 Into THINE hand I commit my spirit: THOU hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. 6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in THY mercy: for THOU hast considered my trouble; THOU hast known my soul in adversities; 8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: THOU hast set my feet in a large room. *** 9 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly. 10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed. 11 I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me. 12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel. 13 For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life. 14 But I trusted in THEE, O LORD: I said, THOU art my God. 15 My times are in THY hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me. 16 Make THY face to shine upon THY servant: save me for THY mercies' sake. 17 Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon THEE: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave. 18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous. 19 Oh how great is THY goodness, which THOU hast laid up for them that fear THEE; which THOU hast wrought for them that trust in THEE before the sons of men! 20 THOU shalt hide them in the secret of THY presence from the pride of man: THOU shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. 21 Blessed be the LORD: for HE hath shewed me HIS marvellous kindness in a strong city. 22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before THINE eyes: nevertheless thouTHOU heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto THEE. 23 O love the LORD, all ye HIS saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer. 24 Be of good courage, and HE shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD. *** Psalm 32 (selected verses) 1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. 3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. 4 For day and night THY hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. 5 I acknowledged my sin unto THEE, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and THOU forgavest the iniquity of my sin. 6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when THOU mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. 7 THOU art my hiding place; THOU shalt preserve me from trouble; THOU shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. 8 (God says) I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with MINE eye. 9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. 10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. 11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart. *** Psalm 33 (selected verses) 1 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. 2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto HIM with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. 3 Sing unto HIM a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. 4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all HIS works are done in truth. 5 HE loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. 6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of HIS mouth. 7 HE gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: HE layeth up the depth in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of HIM. 9 For HE spake, and it was done; HE commanded, and it stood fast. 10 The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: HE maketh the devices of the people of none effect. 11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of HIS heart to all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom HE hath chosen for HIS own inheritance. 13 The LORD looketh from heaven; HE beholdeth all the sons of men. 14 From the place of HIS habitation HE looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. 15 HE fashioneth their hearts alike; HE considereth all their works. 16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. 17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. 18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear HIM, upon them that hope in HIS mercy; 19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: HE is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart shall rejoice in HIM, because we have trusted in HIS holy name. (the Word) 22 Let THY mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in THEE. *** Psalm 34 (selected verses) 1 I will bless the LORD at all times: HIS praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD (THE WORD): the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt HIS name (The Word) together. 4 I sought the LORD, and HE heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. 5 They looked unto HIM, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear HIM, and delivereth them. 8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in HIM. 9 O fear the LORD, ye HIS saints: for there is no want to them that fear HIM. 10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing. 11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? 13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. 14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and HIS ears are open unto their cry. 16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. 20 HE keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. 21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. 22 The LORD redeemeth the soul of HIS servants: and none of them that trust in HIM shall be desolate. *** Psalm 35 (selected verses) 1 Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me. 2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help. 3 Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation. 4 Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt. 5 Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them. 6 Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the LORD persecute them. 7 For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged for my soul. 8 Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall. 9 And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD (THE WORD): it shall rejoice in HIS salvation. 10 All my bones shall say, LORD, WHO is like unto THEE, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him? 11 False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not. 12 They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul. 13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. 14 I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother. 15 But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not: 16 With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth. 17 Lord, how long wilt THOU look on? rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions. 18 I will give THEE thanks in the great congregation: I will praise THEE among much people. 19 Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause. 20 For they speak not peace: but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land. 21 Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it. 22 This THOU hast seen, O LORD: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me. 23 Stir up THYSELF, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord. 24 Judge me, O LORD my God, according to THY righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me. 25 Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up. 26 Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me. 27 Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of HIS servant. 28 And my tongue shall speak of THY righteousness and of THY praise all the day long.

Promises are powerful but only when they are kept. On that first Easter Sunday Jesus' tomb was empty, proving that his promise to deal with evil once and for all was not an empty promise. Join us on Easter Sunday as we celebrate the victory of our God as we experience the promise of the resurrection. Luke 24:1-12 (ESV)But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

Our Lenten journey has been an in medias res, or Latin for in the middle of things. We started in the middle of the story with the Passover and ended last week with Jesus' crucifixion. And today we are going back to the beginning, Palm Sunday, where everything was set in motion for Jesus to go to the cross. What was the meaning of this lowly rabbi riding into town on a donkey? Was this a triumphal entry or a humble act foreshadowing what was to come? What does this all mean for us today as we continue to prepare for Resurrection Day?Luke 19:28-44 (ESV)And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?' you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.'” So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Our reading this week is Luke's account of Jesus' crucifixion. You may be thinking, “But wait, it isn't Good Friday yet!” This is true. But the cross of Christ is central to the life of the Christian and is at the heart of our preparation for Easter Sunday. Before we take a time warp and go back to where all this was set in motion, on Palm Sunday, we will meditate on the Cross of Christ in preparation for Holy Week. Luke 23:26-43 (ESV)And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him. But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,' and to the hills, ‘Cover us.' For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
We live in a complicated world; that may be an understatement. Following Jesus in this world is getting more complicated as time marches on. We have had many opportunities this Lenten season to be honest about how as we participate with the evil one we are adding to the confusion in this world. Yet, many of us find ourselves asking God why he isn't doing anything about it. This morning as we look at Jesus before Pilate we will explore the same question, “Jesus, why don't you do anything about it?!”. Luke 23:1-25 (ESV)Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.” And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him. So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. I will therefore punish and release him.”But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder. Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.” But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.
With one voice the religious leaders spoke evil against the Son of God. It is easy to read the accounts recorded in Luke 22 and 23 and think I would never respond to Jesus like those people did! That is a dangerous place to find oneself in. As we prepare for Easter morning we are invited to be honest about how we often join in with one voice to speak evil against the Son of God and his rule and reign in this world. As we confess this reality, we open ourselves up to hear words of grace and mercy that come from the mouth of the Son of God. Luke 22:63–23:1 (ESV)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him. When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.

“I am a stranger with thee.” — Psalm 39:12 Yes, O Lord, with Thee, but not to Thee. All my natural alienation from Thee, Thy grace has effectually removed; and now, in fellowship with Thyself, I walk through this sinful world as a pilgrim in a foreign country. Thou art a stranger in Thine own […]
Lent is a season for us to be honest about our participation in the evil that has infected this world like cancer. As we prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter morning, we must pause and face the reality that our good-willed intentions to faithfully follow Jesus in life and death often go awry; sadly, very quickly. Why is that so? Is our faith really that fickle, or is there something or someone behind the scenes pulling the strings?Luke 22:39–62 (ESV)And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, and Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Your Nightly Prayer
We begin the Lenten season by joining Jesus in the upper room where Jesus and his disciples celebrate the Passover meal together. Jesus begins to prepare his disciples with a warning; Things are about to get difficult. Evil is coming for you. And you are going to end up participating in evil. As we begin our Lenten journey with Jesus we hear the same warning from Jesus as we reflect on how we are often blind to evil and end up participating in its destructive ways. May our confession point us to Jesus as he prepares us for Resurrection Day. Luke 22:14, 24-38And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him.A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.“You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.' For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.”

This sermon from nineteenth-century American Presbyterian theologian William Henry Green (1824-1900) is on Isaiah 45:15. As outgoing moderator of the Presbyterian Church of the United States in America in 1892, Dr. Green was scheduled to preach this message to the General Assembly. However, health difficulties prevented his attending the meeting in Portland, Oregon. In fulfillment of his duties, however, Dr. Green provided a manuscript to be read. The Stated Clerk of the denomination at the time, Dr. W. H. Roberts, read the manuscript in the opening service of the Assembly.
