How do you constantly come up with good ideas?  How can you know what direction you should go in your business when you have a busy schedule and very little time to just think? In my interview today with Saud Juman, we discount how to tap into the "creative well" and what exactly that is. Saud started a company called PolicyMedical.com almost 18 years ago.  He exited the company about 2 years ago. Policy Medical is a SaaS company that serves hospitals primarily to organize their policy documents. Saud has a great creative framework for: coming up with new SaaS or other ideas deciding where to focus your time What niche to go into We talk about something that Saud calls the "Creative Well".  Saud used the creative well to help him understand where his professional journey should go and eventually the ideas that became Policy Medical. During the second half of the interview, we discuss content marketing strategies.  Policy Medical has a really long sales cycle and the software can cost $50,000 or $100,000 or more. He was able to apply the principles of content marketing, answering customers' questions, and even getting customers to write some of the content for them. Listen in to hear how he navigated the content marketing process and how it helped grow Policy Medical into the business it became.

On today’s show, Saud Juman shares why having a gun pulled on him when he was a nightclub owner in Toronto, Canada, caused him to exit the industry, meditate for 10 months, and start a tech healthcare company called PolicyMedical, Inc. that grew to nine figures and eventually sold to Private Equity. What You Will Learn In Today's Podcast Interview How Saud owned his exit from the nightclub scene after having a gun put in his face. Why Saud started a successful tech healthcare company after 10 months of meditation. Why you should proactively change before some big event happens. How to align your ultimate vision for your life with the one you have for your business. How to recognize the signs that you’re in a “pit” and need to make some changes. The importance of taking time to listen instead of constantly consuming. How meditation can help you get clear on your vision. Why you need to understand your drivers (your “why”) before you build a business. Why it takes rigor and discipline to be able to hear yourself and take action on what is most important to you. Why negative emotions like shame can spur positive change. How to keep true to your long-term goals while making tactical short-term decisions. Why you should stop and critically assess how each business decision is getting closer to or further from your ultimate goals. Are You Growing The Value of Your Business Take The 2-Minute Assessment To Get Your Intentional Growth Score™ And 1-Page Vision Board. Podcast Summary We have quite a treat for you today. In this episode, I’m talking with Saud Juman as he takes us from his first venture in university to transitioning into the nightlife in downtown Toronto, Canada. He details the experiences he had which caused him to reconsider how he was living his life and operating his business, thereby instigating the change that would eventually bring him his greatest success yet—PolicyMedical. I broke this episode into a two-part series because I think Saud’s story does a great job highlighting why it’s absolutely crucial to understand who you are, what you want from your business and life, and why, before you build your strategic plan to grow and exit the business. In this episode, Saud and I focus on the story that helped him get clear on his why. The big takeaway from this first part of the series is to listen to yourself first. As Saud puts it, you “own your exit” by knowing your 'why' and putting pen to paper describing what you want before you implement a strategic plan to grow value. It’s that focus that allows you to clear obstacles from your path as you execute on the strategies that get you to your goals. It takes rigor and discipline to maintain this focus and to really listen to your thoughts. There’s nothing more eye opening to make you realize what matters to you in life than an unforeseen event that changes your situation and limits your choices. The key is to have a valuable business that gives you the chance to pivot when necessary, no matter what gets thrown at you or when. About the Guest: Saud Juman loves basketball and business. In this episode of Trends in MedTech we speak with Saud Juman, founder and former CEO of Policy Medical, a governance, risk and compliance management software for healthcare enterprises. Saud takes us through his journey of first coming up with the idea to solve a particular problem that healthcare facilities were facing, to launch and growing a full-fledged medium sized company, and then leading the successful acquisition of Policy Medical and subsequently exiting the company for a new beginning. As a young guy in his 20's, Saud found himself driven by a passion to do meaningful work and the pursuit of helping others. While working for a healthcare company, he serendipitously found an opportunity to make a real difference by creating a software solution that he knew already knew was in demand. This led to the beginnings of what later became Policy Medical, which now holds thousands of clients, and has reach hundreds of thousands of healthcare providers across North America. What struck me the most is that Saud sets a great example of the importance of learning by doing. One of the key messages in this episode is the power of listening attentively and learning from customers. If there is one ingredient that has made all the difference in the evolution and success of Policy Medical – this was it. Throughout the episode we also spoke about adapting to clients' changing needs, paying attention to industry trends, such as the movement toward greater commoditization in a once niche software solutions space, and the importance of listening to your body's needs for balance. It was also a pleasant surprise to hear Saud give so much weight to the impact that his family life had on his professional success. Although Saud is no longer officially affiliated with Policy Medical, he remains a big fan of the company and what it represents. Saud is optimistic about what the future has in store, especially as he grows his coaching practice and is able to spend more time with his family, perhaps before starting his next venture. In his spare time, Saud still practices in martial arts and medical Qigong. He also looks forward to working with mentees and fellow entrepreneurs through this coaching practice. These days Saud Juman is a clean-cut guy with a successful healthcare business dedicated to helping doctors and medical staff actually take care of themselves. But it wasn't always this way. Saud's journey has been one from darkness to light. Back when he was a college student, Saud fell into the underworld of Toronto club life, embroiled in a world of dangerous men and power games that he could scarcely have imagined when he set out to cover his university fees by DJing. But even though he would ultimately turn his back on that world of violence and intimidation, it taught him a lot about himself and about human nature. Like Robert Greene teaches us in The 48 Laws of Power, human nature is in many ways universal, and the underworld is a prime playground to witness interpersonal and social dynamics in their rawest form. There, the stakes are higher and the gloves are off. Your word must be your bond, and conflict resolution is an outright survival skill. We talk to Saud about what he learnt in the underworld that's now made him a successful entrepreneur and speaker, and what personal reinvention actually means. This isn't another saccharine redemption tale with a bow tied on it, but a look at the frightening, challenging, but also thrilling reality of transitioning from one world to another, finding yourself along the way. Personal reinvention is vital to success in any walk of life, but how can we do it without losing our identity along the way? As Saud's story shows, the process is one of turning the coin over to see the other side, rather than trying to pretend you're something completely 'new'. Knowing your own darkness is vital to be able to become your best self. We also play a couple of psychological games with Saud and discover that the seeds of his personal life adventure can be found in some of the books and stories he first connected with as a child; we discuss the importance of mentorship and the challenges of trying to find and impress mentors; and we explore where the balance between humility and hunger for success lies. As Saud puts it, 'The spectrum of light and dark exists in everybody' – life is discovering and working from where we are on that spectrum.   Also Including: What do respect and success really mean? This man has invested in over 150 businesses, boasts 99 consecutive quarters of profit, and successfully scaled his first business, which he started out of the trunk of his car, from zero to $2 Billion dollars. In the last couple of years Jim became famous for giving 1.5 Million dollars of his own money to secretly launch a resettlement program that brought 58 Syrian families into Ontario and provided them with housing, language training, and employment. He coordinated the entire program and didn’t even tell his own wife until it was ready for launch.
