Building Trust in Today's Organizations: Lessons from a Former Undercover Police Officer

Where Work Meets Life™ with Dr. Laura

Dr. Laura is joined by Pamela Barnum, a former undercover police officer and federal prosecutor who is also a keynote speaker, to talk about building trust in organizations. Pamela's background in undercover work taught her how to build trust with difficult drug dealers, and her work as a prosecutor gave her further insight into building trust. As a body language expert and also a corporate negotiator, Pamela shares a lifetime of knowledge on the importance of trust and how to cultivate and maintain it. Pamela explains all her years of building trust in different careers as being able to read people and to show up in a way that's trustworthy and charismatic. She discusses how trust is key to convincing people to buy into or accept whatever messaging is being presented and that it exists at the crossroads of confidence and empathy. She and Dr. Laura explore how leaders can instill a culture of trust in their organizations and talk about nonverbal cues and eye contact in cultural contexts. There is a sense of influence that goes along with cultivating trust, and Pamela's experience helps convey the importance of modelling the behaviors we want to be returned to us. The lessons are profound and valuable in any setting. “You know, we want to be transparent, but sometimes there are things that the C-suite is telling the leadership team that can't be shared with everyone yet, or isn't really worked out all the way. So being transparent can be challenging, but I encourage people to be as transparent as possible with the information that they're permitted to share, and share it in a way that lands with people so that they understand, they know what's going to be happening, they know what the end goal is, and they have some steps to get there.” Pamela BarnumWatch this episode on Dr. Laura's YouTube channelAbout Pamela Barnum:Imagine what it would be like to live as a different person with a different name, identity, and background. For months at a time, you're living with a false identity, and your success depends on building trust and detecting deception with some of the most dangerous people imaginable. That's precisely what Pamela Barnum did for years working undercover in the Drug Enforcement Section. She learned real-world techniques for building trust and interpreting body language. When Pamela graduated from law school, she left policing and accepted a position as a federal prosecuting attorney. She spent countless hours in the courtroom, perfecting her proficiency as a trust strategist and body language expert. Following a successful 20-year career in the criminal justice system, Pamela studied corporate negotiations in graduate school. Now, she shares her expertise with others, teaching them how to improve their communication skills to increase trust inside corporations, associations, and law enforcement agencies. As a nonverbal communication expert and trust strategist, Pamela delivers techniques once thought of as a “secret second language” that participants can begin using immediately. Take decades of experience, including working deep undercover in narcotics, followed by a rewarding legal career, and you get real-world strategies that help participants crack the code on trust and improve professional relationships using proven field-tested techniques.Pamela shares her experience, research, and expertise with humor, candor, and energy, blending actionable strategies with memorable stories. She is also a featured expert and contributor in print media, radio and television news programs in Canada and the United States. She has appeared in person in front of audiences ranging from 50 - 12,000 and on countless virtual stages.Resources:Website: PamelaBarnum.comPamela Barnum on LinkedInPamela Barnum on InstagramBuilding Bad information“Insight” by Tasha Eurich“Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” by Robert B. Mastering the Six Pillars of Persuasion: A Deep Dive into Robert B. Cialdini's 'Influence'

Chapter 1:Summary of Influence"Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" by Robert B. Cialdini is a seminal book in the field of psychology which explores the techniques through which people are persuaded to make decisions and how to recognize and fend off attempts at manipulation in everyday life. Published in 1984, it remains widely regarded and referenced in psychology, marketing, and business.Cialdini identifies six key principles of influence:1. Reciprocity - People feel obligated to return favors, even if they are unsolicited. This principle is often used in marketing, for example, when companies give free samples or gifts, expecting that such acts will encourage customers to purchase more or return the favor in some way.2. Commitment and Consistency - Once people commit to something, they are more likely to follow through on it to appear consistent. This can involve public commitments or small initial commitments that can be leveraged into larger ones.3. Social Proof - People often look to others to determine their own actions, believing that if others are doing something, it must be correct. This principle can be seen in behaviors such as online reviews and testimonials influencing purchasing decisions.4. Authority - People tend to obey authority figures, even if they are asked to perform objectionable acts. This compliance is driven by the belief in the legitimacy of the authority. Real-life examples include deference to figures in uniforms or titles.5. Liking - People are easily persuaded by individuals they like. Factors that enhance likability include physical attractiveness, similarity, complimentarity, contact and cooperation.6. Scarcity - Items or opportunities are seen to be more valuable as they become less available. Marketers might use this principle by promoting exclusive offers or limited-time sales.Cialdini's book delves into the ethical dimensions of these principles, highlighting that while they can be used to manipulate, they also serve as tools for positive social influence when used ethically. "Influence" remains a crucial resource for understanding the underlying mechanics of why people say "yes" and how to apply these understandings ethically in daily life.Chapter 2:The Theme of Influence"Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" by Robert B. Cialdini is a non-fiction book that explores the psychology behind why people say "yes" and how to apply these understandings in various aspects of life. Here's an overview of the key components and ideas presented in the book: Key Plot PointsSince "Influence" is a psychological and educational text rather than a narrative work, it doesn't have a plot. Instead, the book is organized around key principles of persuasion, each illustrated with research studies, examples, and Cialdini's own experiences. The six fundamental principles of influence he outlines are:1. Reciprocity: The obligation to give when you receive.2. Commitment and Consistency: The desire to be consistent with what we have already done.3. Social Proof: Looking to others to determine our behavior.4. Authority: The belief in the expertise of authority figures and adherence to their directives.5. Liking: The tendency to agree with people we like and admire.6. Scarcity: The higher value we place on things that are less available. Character Development"Influence" does not feature characters in the traditional sense, but Cialdini does present numerous case studies involving real people and their encounters with persuasion techniques. Each anecdote and case study serves to personify the principles and make them more relatable and understandable. Through these examples, Cialdini effectively demonstrates how ordinary people can both fall victim...

Chapter 1 What's Influence"Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" is a book written by Robert B. Cialdini, a renowned social psychologist and professor emeritus of psychology and marketing. Published in 1984, the book explores the principles behind why people comply with requests or are persuaded to take specific actions. Cialdini identifies six key principles of influence that he considers universal and powerful in shaping human behavior. These principles are: 1. Reciprocity: People feel obliged to give back when they receive something. By offering help or favors to others, one can trigger a sense of indebtedness, increasing the chances of compliance. 2. Commitment and Consistency: Once people commit to an idea or course of action, they tend to remain consistent with it. By getting individuals to make small commitments early on, it becomes easier to obtain larger commitments later. 3. Social Proof: People often look to the actions and behaviors of others to guide their own decisions. When uncertain, individuals tend to rely on the actions of others as evidence of what is correct or appropriate. 4. Liking: People are more likely to be influenced by those they like or find appealing. Building rapport, finding commonalities, and establishing positive relationships increase the likelihood of compliance. 5. Authority: Individuals have a tendency to follow authority figures or experts. By presenting oneself or one's message as authoritative, credibility and influence can be enhanced. 6. Scarcity: The less available something is, the more valuable it becomes. Creating a sense of limited availability or a fear of missing out can drive people's desire to comply or act quickly. These principles provide insights into how persuasion works and can be used both ethically and unethically in various contexts such as sales, marketing, negotiations, and social interactions. However, Cialdini also emphasizes the need for ethical use of influence techniques and highlights the importance of understanding these principles to protect oneself from undue influence. Overall, "Influence" is a widely acclaimed book that offers valuable psychological insights into how individuals can be persuaded and influenced in their decision-making processes. It remains relevant and widely referenced in the fields of psychology, marketing, and communication.Chapter 2 Why is Influence ValuedAccording to reddit comments on Influence, "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" by Robert Cialdini is highly valued for several reasons: 1. Comprehensive Understanding of Persuasion: The book provides a comprehensive exploration of the principles and tactics of persuasion. It delves into various psychological principles behind why people say "yes" to requests, making it valuable for anyone interested in understanding human behavior and communication. 2. Research-Based Approach: Cialdini extensively relies on scientific research to back up his claims. The book is grounded in rigorous empirical studies, which gives it credibility and makes it appealing to those seeking evidence-based knowledge. 3. Practical Applications: "Influence" offers practical strategies and techniques that readers can apply in their personal and professional lives. It provides actionable insights into how to influence and persuade others more effectively, making it particularly valuable for salespeople, marketers, negotiators, and anyone...

Or at least that is what I did when I first came across his content. Kerwin Rae comes today as a highly sought after business strategist, author, speaker and host of the Unstoppable podcast. I had the opportunity to be interviewed on his show last month, and knew that I needed to share him with my audience. What I love about Kerwin is that while he is a business coach and strategist, you will soon see that he is an expert on studying the psychology of influence and works with people to become their best selves, which in return, helps them to exponentially grow in their business. I am confident that this will go down as one of the favorite episodes to date. Kerwin Rae Resources:InstagramFacebookTwitterKerwin Rae on YouTubeUnstoppable with Kerwin Rae PodcastKerwin Rae Website If you enjoyed this episode, make sure and give us a five star rating  and leave us a review on iTunes, Podcast Addict, Podchaser and Castbox. Sign up for the next DAC Bootcamp Follow me on Social Media:Amy on IGAmy on Facebook Resources:AmyLedin.comLean Bodies Consulting (LBC)LBC University
