Scottish Country Dancing
Livia Kohn is a fascinating human being with a remarkable zest for life. This interview proved to be most enjoyable and educational and humbling in terms of what a person on her path can manifest. When not partaking in Scottish Country Dancing, of which she does with fervent regularity, Livia can be found travelling the world lecturing on Daoism (Taoism), coordinating Daoist conferences, editing a premier Daoist journal, writing books and translating classics of Daoism, and managing a publishing company that focusses on Daoist and classical Chinese philosophy. Additionally, yearly she leads a multi-week group hiking expedition in Japan to explore the culture and visit sacred temples. Livia earned a Ph.D. in 1980, lived in Japan for a decade, and served for nearly two decades as a professor of Religion and East Asian studies at Boston University. She has authored more than 30 books and countless articles and has helped spread Daoist philosophy around the world. We talk about all these things in this episode and spend a fair bit of time exploring specific aspects of the Daodejing and Zhuangzi, classic Daoist texts. Livia is a wellspring of knowledge and wisdom and such a lovely individual that this conversation has left me wanting to spend more time in her presence. Her energy alone is uplifting and soothing, and that is just a thread of what she has to offer to humanity. Settle into this timely interview and see what inspiration she weaves for you. This week we talk about Stripping the Willow with a Dashing White Sergeant at a Canadian Barn Dance. We are talking the ins and outs, the round and rounds and the pas de basque of Ceilidhs. We discuss the history of the Scottish social events, the bands, the music, the dancing and the embarrassment of learning to dance at school. Unfortunately we had some wee issues with the audio on this episode and so some of it sounds a bit dodgy. Hopefully not enough to prevent you from enjoying this week's show!
Taking another break from revisiting the books that he has been given by guests on the podcast, Charles Adrian revisits instead what he said in the previous episode about Scottish Country Dancing and talks about three books that he has very much enjoyed. More information and a transcript of this episode is at http://www.pageonepodcast.com/ Correction 1: This episode was recorded on the 15th December, 2020, and not the 14th December as Charles Adrian says. Correction 2: Charles Adrian mistakenly pronounces Ivanhoe as Ivinghoe. The first is a novel by Sir Walter Scott; the second is a village in Buckinghamshire. Correction 3: The novelist Charles Adrian refers to as JY Yang in this episode has been called Neon Yang since September 2020. You can read the announcement on their Twitter here: https://twitter.com/itsneonyang/status/1300790160301461507 The podcast will also be taking a break over festive season and will return with new episodes at some point in the new year. Tonight sees the first in a series of ceilidhs to be held at Bellfield. It’s the initiative of Ros Gasson, a local fiddle teacher and founder of Da Hooley Ceilidh Band. The band, which has been going for over 20 years, is certainly popular – it has bookings all the way through until September next year. But having moved to Portobello, Ros wanted to offer something to the community – and raise some money as well (in this case for Bellfield itself but other local causes will benefit later in the year). Porty Podcast Producer, David Calder, went to meet her.
May 2015. David Turner talks to Paul McMenemy about getting into poetry by accident as a way of passing exams, the immediacy of poetry and the beauty of how it lingers in the mind, publishing and selling Lunar Poetry magazine, and the failure of most poetry to market itself well. Paul reads three poems: 'Untitled' - 00:00:43 ‘Scottish Country Dancing’ - 00:11:40 ‘It’s not the economy and don’t call me stupid’ - 00:25:37 Here is the link for the Indiegogo campaign: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/th... www.twitter.com/Silent_Tongue

Thanks to everyone who has sent me information. There was a clip on the NBC evening news onWed Feb 1. Needle Notes I’ve been proactive about my sock knitting lately. Choose yarn that will wear well. What are your favorite hard wearing sock yarns? Knit to a tight gauge Close fit (negative ease) Smooth skin (bring on the lotion!) Pre-darning Tips from Clara Parkes in Vogue: Look at your socks. See what areas are wearing out. When you come to these areas in your knitting go down a needle size. Turn socks inside out. Thread a blunt needle with your sock yarn and run it through the purl bumps on the wrong side. I took this a step further by making horizontal rows with mohair-silk blend. Crafting with Carpal Tunnel Group First thread is sticky. Do this one thing for your wrist pain. Joshua Tucker specializes in the elimination of carpal tunnel pain and symptoms.
