Overhead power lines transmit the vital electricity that our homes and businesses, schools and hospitals need. They're exposed to all the elements - storms, winds, hail and snow - so someone needs to make sure they can withstand whatever is thrown at them. Thankfully there's a team of people who do this 24/7 – lineworkers. The UK's transmission network has 7000km of overhead lines - lay the cables end-to-end and you'd get halfway to Australia. Laura Young, a.k.a Less-Waste Laura, chats to training instructor Thomas Norris, about how he leads his teams through extreme weather to keep the power on. Tom talks a day in the life of a lineworker, the training process and what it takes to climb the pylons and keep the network resilient. In the US, Carolyn Kissane talks with Amy Broz, one of only two women lineworkers at National Grid in New York State. Her work involves emergency response, keeping electricity systems live in storms, after disasters and accidents. Amy talks role models, how the work has changed since the 1990s, and explains how mentorship is crucial for encouraging women in trades, community service and utilities. If you think you have what it takes to serve the community by keeping power on through emergencies, you'll find everything you need to know here: https://www.nationalgrid.com/about-us

It's an exciting time for geothermal energy. The US Department of Energy predicts geothermal power generation capacity to grow by 26 times by 2050, potentially providing almost 10% of the US' total power needs. To talk about the policy and technology that's needed to achieve this goal is Kevin Jones, enhanced geothermal program manager at the DOE. He speaks to Carolyn Kissane about pilot projects in the US and the pioneering work they are doing. What makes geothermal so exciting is its reliability as it's available 24/7, whatever the weather. Enhanced geothermal systems are also revolutionising the field, allowing for the extraction of heat from deeper, previously unreachable rock formations. This cutting-edge technology opens up vast new areas for geothermal development, even in regions without traditional geothermal activity. Michael Webber is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas in Austin, and he also joins the show to talk Carolyn through the technology that could unlock enough power to meet 3-5% of the world's demands by 2050. It's not only electricity generation that geothermal energy can provide. It has use as a heat source too, and co-host Laura Young finds out how the UK's only geothermal plant works as she talks to Eden Geothermal CEO Gus Grand. The views expressed in this podcast are those of the participants and do not reflect the activities of National Grid

Hey Backseaters! I have noticed that there are a LOT of new listeners here on Backseat Bible Nuggets which means you're telling all your friends about this podcast and that makes me super happy. Thank you! But, I thought it might be time to reintroduce myself again for some of our new Nuggetters! So, Hey! I'm Laura Young. And I'm the most normal mom of two kids you'll ever meet. Hah! What I mean by that is that I'm not a fancy podcaster with a big studio and slick production skills. Nope! I'm actually a mom who wanted a podcast devotional for her kids to listen to one morning as we were running out the door and it was stressful, crazy and everyone was frustrated. We needed something to reset our hearts and minds for the day ahead since the morning hadn't been our best. Anyway, I couldn't find anything. All I wanted was for someone to basically read a devotional to us since I was driving and definitely not in the right state of mind to wing it as we headed out the door.   Since I couldn't find anything, I decided to make it! Well, actually, I prayed about it, tried to get other people to do it and really felt like the Lord kept saying, “why not you? Why not you?” So, 2 years ago I decided to go for it and kicked off this whole Backseat Bible Nugget project.   That's how I got here! And I've done it with the help of lots of kiddos like you. My favorite episodes are when I hear your voices instead of my own! Speaking of kid voices, my kids are Hudson and Avery and you'll hear their voices on here helping out pretty often.   Right now though, they are enjoying summer activities like invention camp, water parks, dance camp, reading challenges, family trips and swimming. Lots and lots of swimming since it's so so hot.   Anyway, since I want you to know who we are, here are 5 random things about us…. 1.     My kids prefer to be barefoot all day every day no matter the terrain. 2.     We think that Papa Johns pizza is the best pizza that exists. 3.      We had a black bear walk across our front porch last year! 4.     We live near an air force base that has tons of fighter jets constantly flying. It's super fun to see an airshow every day, but not always best when it comes to recording a podcast since those planes are LOUD. 5.     Our family has 2 kittens who are brother and sister. They look just alike and we have a hard time telling them apart!   What about you? What are some cool things about you? I'd love to meet you and get to know you better! You can always email me at backseatbiblenuggets@gmail.com or even find me on Instagram or facebook. I'd love to hear your thoughts and even any ideas you might have for some podcast episodes!   But, you know what? Even if we don't ever meet, I know something about you. I know the Lord created you and has big plans for your life! The Bible says that the Lord knit us together so He's made YOU in a special way. And I know that He can use YOUR life to do awesome and wonderful thing for God's glory if you follow Him and His ways all the days of your life. And that's my prayer for every ear listening. That this podcast would be used to add a little fuel to your fire in walking in relationship with the Lord. That it would be a supplement to help you remember and talk about Jesus and all He's done for us every day.   Okay, yall, well it's been great to meet you. I'll be back next Wednesday with a regular episode. See you then!

Laura Young, host of the Backseat Bible Nuggets Podcast, (this show is in the top 200 of Kids and Family podcasts on Apple Podcasts!!) joins me for this casual episode about helping kids read and understand Bible stories.  We'll share some tips for parents on how to make Bible reading fun and engaging for their kids, and we'll also discuss some of the many benefits of reading the Bible.  So whether you're a parent who wants to encourage your child's faith and build in more time for Bible stories, this episode is for you! And because I couldn't help myself, I threw in a fun car ride game for you to play! At the end of the episode you'll find a timed ABC game called “Animals and the Alphabet.” In this easy and fun car ride game, players will start listing animals in alphabetical order. At random, I will call out another letter and then players have to start over with that new letter. We hope you enjoy this episode of AFTR! Can Science Find An Antidote to Americium? With some poisons, there's an antidote — something you can take to block the effects of the poison, or to help remove it from your body. But when the harmful chemical is a radioactive element, options are limited. Iodine pills can be used to help block radioactive iodine I131 from being absorbed by the thyroid, but there aren't many other drugs that can help deal with contamination with other radioactive substances. One of the two existing medications can only be delivered via IV in a clinic. This week, the NIH announced the start of an early clinical trial for an oral drug delivered as a tablet that could potentially be used to bind and remove radioactive elements including plutonium, uranium and neptunium from the body. Rachel Feltman, editor at large at Popular Science, joins Ira to talk about that trial and other stories from the week in science, including an experimental universal flu vaccine, research into the amount of trace DNA humans shed every day, and an update on the planet Saturn's moon count.   Debunking Common Myths About Being Fat Weight loss is big business. Americans spend roughly $60 billion each year trying to lose weight, forking over cash for supplements, diet plans, and gym memberships. Yet somewhere between 90 to 95% of diets fail. Much of what we think we know about the relationship between weight and health is based on a series of assumptions that don't always match up with the latest science. Science Friday producer, Shoshannah Buxbaum talks with Aubrey Gordon, co-host of the podcast Maintenance Phase and author of the recent book “You Just Need To Lose Weight” and 19 Other Myths About Fat People, about the history of the Body Mass Index or BMI. She discusses why the word “obesity” is tangled up in stereotypes about fat people, the flaws in commonly cited mortality statistics, and how anti-fat bias translates into worse healthcare for fat people. Read an excerpt of “You Just Need To Lose Weight” and 19 Other Myths About Fat People here.   What To Do When 500-1,000 Crows Roost In Your Neighborhood Laura Young was at a breaking point when she submitted a post titled “Request: Make 500-1,000 crows leave my street alone” to the subreddit r/lifeprotips in January. “I think you can tell that I was feeling very frustrated and running out of options and I clearly needed help,” she said. Starting last October, Laura's neighborhood in Baltimore was the site of a massive crow roost. And unlike past years' roosts, which usually only last a few weeks with a few dozen crows, this one showed no signs of leaving. “The numbers that they've attracted ever since then are unbelievable,” she said. “I mean, we're at the point where it is frightening to walk out at night.” According to Laura, hundreds of them filled the trees in the park outside her apartment. “And they're all screaming,” she said. “It is loud enough to wake you up indoors with all the windows closed. I don't think anyone on my block has slept past 6:00am in three months.” There was the noise, and then there was the poop: coating the streets, the buildings, and the cars. “It is just disgusting. I've never spent so much money on car washes in my entire life,” she laughed. Michigan State University has integrated the MSU Student Organic Farm into the Division of Student Life and Engagement (SLE). This move reflects the university's commitment to providing students with opportunities for hands-on learning and engagement with sustainable agriculture. The MSU Student Organic Farm is a valuable resource for all students to learn about organic food, farming, and the impact of food on the planet. As part of SLE, the farm will gain more resources and support to expand its impact and continue its mission of educating the next generation. Our panel discussion includes Laurie Thorp, director of the Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment and one of the founders of the Student Organic Farm; Laura Young from MSU's Office of Sustainability; and George Berghorn, an assistant professor of construction management in the School of Planning, Design and Construction.  Conversation Highlights: (5:43) – The mission of the farm “has evolved, but always at its heart has been its name – a farm where students can make decisions and experiment with different ways of growing food. What's changed is the image of the farm.” (7:52) – “Really what I love so much about the farm is that it's a perfect example and a shining jewel for the potential to use our campus as a living laboratory.” (10:42) - “Everybody eats. We can talk about farming and agriculture as if it's this foreign thing. But we all eat.” (14:47) – “What we're doing here exactly models for our students how you work with people in different disciplines who don't know much about your discipline.” (21:35) – “We're slowly growing out of that word (sustainability). Regenerative is the word we're hearing more. It's not just about sustaining people and places and planets. It's about knowing we've done so much damage that we need to go a few steps further to how we can regenerate areas.” (24:20) – “How can a building contribute more than it takes? How do we build things that add to the natural, economic, and human-centric environment rather than just take.” (27:11) – “I said ‘What do you think about a straw-bale building?' And I got a great reaction.” (30:46) – “It's a great example of what can happen when you lower the barriers to collaboration.” (33:10) – “It's an amazing opportunity for all of us to brag about and show that we are leaders in sustainability and education and food and farming.” Support the people and programs at MSU building a more sustainable future on campus and around the world. Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

While the Giants provided a clear response to the accusations, it is a reminder that the league still has a long way to go ensuring the best and brightest minds are afforded opportunities at the highest levels in the NFL. The guys then discuss additions Bobby Johnson, Shea Tierney and Mike Kafta to a robust coaching staff under Brian Daboll. The Giants now have multiple former Buffalo Bills in the building as well as poaching the young QB guru from Kansas City.
