Today I am chatting with my friend Rebecca about YA magical realism novel, The Stones of Burren Bay, by Emily De Angelis. Take a listen as Rebecca and I chat about the plot, characters, Irish/Celtic spiritualism, Native American culture and spiritualism, grief/grieving, and more! The first fifteen minutes are spoiler free!A little about The Stones of Burren Bay: In a tragic car accident, 15-year-old Norie loses her deadbeat father while her distant mother is injured. Her prized possession, an antique artist's box that traveled from Ireland with her great-great-grandmother, is destroyed along with her deep connection to her art. As Norie grapples with her self-identity, obscured by grief and anger, she and her physically and emotionally fragile mother are forced to relocate. With no other relatives to rely on, they call on the kindness of her mother's oldest friend Dahlia and her daughter Wil, who run the Jolly Pot Tearoom and Burren Bay Lighthouse Museum on Manitoulin Island. Dahlia introduces Norie to ancient Irish Celtic spiritualism and opens the thin veil between the past and present where Norie encounters the echo of a century's old spirit, Oonagh. Through Oonagh's own story Norie comes to terms with her father's betrayal and death and rediscovers her passion for art. As her mother's emotional wounds reach a crisis, Norie realizes they must face their guilt and grief together in order to heal and become reunited as mother and daughter.Send us a textHave a question about today's book or author? Traditionally, a powerful ruler was acknowledged as the High King of Ireland.  The society was made up of clans and was structured hierarchically according to Class. I have just finished listening to your Celtic - Christmas episode, and was very impressed with the tunes  -  especially the creative arrangements. These gave me so many ideas for future arrangements with my Celtic Music band, FitzBlarney. We actually began as an ‘Acoustic - Celtic Christmas' trio, (comprised of myself and my two sisters.) Since then, we have taken on my brother and brother - in - law, and also play non - Christmas, Irish/Celtic music. In fact, this past December, we were asked to play at the Historic Salem ‘House Tour.” In essence, people with historic houses open them up to the public to walk through and see their Christmas displays. Musicians, ( like ourselves, ) set - up and create some Christmassy background music. This year, we were playing in the chapel of St. Peter's Church, (founded in 1733!) We also did our “Acoustic Brunch,” at O'Neill's Pub, also in Salem, MA. (I have attached a couple' pictures for you!) Thank you again for all you do! My commutes sound great now!" I used to be quite low on St. Pat's but I have finally realized that there are many ways to be happy on this day of Irish celebration.  I live in a very "unusual" area that has no Irish culture at all.  I am a Celtic performer who must travel quite a distance in order to perform at festivals and events but that is impossible during the week since I work a regular job. I used to be sad to see all of my friends on Facebook singing and playing all week long!  I wanted so much to be with them and enjoying the festivities.  Then I realized that I was blessed to spend that time with my family...making an authentic Irish meal (NOT cornbeef and cabbage) and listening to those same friends on a mountain of CD's.  There are, of course, Irish libations involved. : - ) Now I look forward to the day as it was originally meant to be; a chance to share our faith and our heritage with others."

Gabriel Olafs and Steiney Sigurðardóttir: Lullabies for Piano and Cello (Decca) New Classical Tracks - Gabriel Olafs by “When you write a pop song today, you want it to be catchy. But with folk music, you want it to be catchy for hundreds of years. You need it to survive. I really like that,” pianist Gabríel Ólafs says. “I thought that was intriguing. And I thought of this idea of challenging myself to write new ‘folk melodies' or new lullabies.”That's the idea behind the third recording from the 24-year-old Icelandic pianist, featuring cellist Steiney Sigurðardóttir. It's a collection of lullabies for cello and piano based on Icelandic folk songs. The pieces were inspired by a collection of melodies he discovered in an antique book shop in Reykjavik, Iceland.“I'm on a list at this old bookstore, and they often call me for stuff that comes in. And when they called about this one, I recognized it as something that I learned about in school studying music in Iceland. I had totally forgotten about it, and I had never seen the book. It's quite rare, this book itself.“It contains our most important piece of musical history in Iceland. Basically, it was a priest that toured the country and collected them from families and churches, and he went to every part of Iceland around the island, and he collected these melodies. And I think what captured me was that many of these melodies, as I was just reading them and playing them on the piano, I thought they were surprisingly catchy.”How did you decide which ones you were going record?“I noticed very early on that most of the melodies that I really liked, my immediate favorites, were lullabies. I picked a combination of some lesser-known ones that I found for the first time in the music score, but then I also picked some that I recognized and were personally my favorites.“For example, Mama, which means mother or mom in Icelandic, is probably our most celebrated and common lullaby here in Iceland. And it's one that my mom, or rather my parents, would sing to me.“The opening track is called Fantasia, which is an original melody. It is sort of inspired by the Celtic side of Icelandic musical heritage. We have a sort of Irish Celtic population that arrived early on and very much influenced the musical sound of the Vikings, and it also celebrates my love of fantasy. I'm a huge nerd, and I've recently been able to admit this publicly. I'm really into The Lord of the Rings books.”Why is nostalgia important to you as you create your music?“Because of the nuance in this feeling of nostalgia. If you try to express nostalgia or create a nostalgic feeling in a piece of music, I feel like it translates well because of this nuance, because it's not too on the nose of a feeling. Ever since I started writing, I do very much chase a feeling of nostalgia in many of my pieces.“I would describe this record as maybe an a la carte menu. You know, in cooking, you can make a really complicated big dish, and it's amazing, but you can also make a really complicated big dish that doesn't taste very good. What I discovered about myself is me wanting to create a musical a la carte menu, where every small little dish does satisfy you.” Gabríel Ólafs - Lullabies for Piano and Cello ft. Brigid was a pre-Christian Irish goddess of fertility and life. As a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, she was the master of healing sharing similarities with the Catholic St. Brigid of Kildare. Originating from the word Briganti, meaning the Exalted One, the name Brigid has been anglicized from the old Irish Brig becoming the term for Bride. Brigid refers to the goddess' connection to sunlight and fire, but may also be related to dawn goddesses across the Indo-European world. Some mention Brigid as a triple goddess, but unlike most triple goddesses in Ireland, all of her aspects were named Brigid and had dominion over Smithcraft, healing and poetry. Brigid is associated with healing, fertility, motherhood, and inspired many writers and poets, Irish novelists credited Brigid as their inspiration. Her epithet, the Exalted One reflected her connection to crafting and wisdom. The Lebor Gabála Érenn established Brigid as the daughter of the Dagda, chief of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and her mother was the namesake mother-goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danann.

Drawing on her Irish-Celtic heritage, Julianne Stanz helps us explore the Celtic idea of the “thin places” and how to help children create spaces for grace in their lives. While thin places have always been associated with specific ancient locations, it is clear that we have entered a thin space today, time of spiritual displacement. This spiritual displacement finds its voice in communal expressions of pain such as protesting and social media trends, and in rioting and civil unrest.  If we can navigate this well, we can emerge stronger, more connected to one another, more empathetic, peaceful and hopeful—and as a result, we will be able to solve problems differently by working together. One way of navigating this thin space effectively, both within ourselves and as a society, is by drawing from the wellspring of ancient spiritual traditions, especially those from the world of the Celtic spirituality. How do we help our children to navigate their own thin times of transformation, growth and wonder?  Tapping into the thin places in your life where there is space to listen to the messages that our beyond our everyday existence.  To meet those thin places in your life, one must slow down, step away from the distractions, and listen.  We are often disconnected from our spirit and teaching teens to get quiet and shut out the noise, is key to helping them find their own inner voice.  Help your teen recognize the things that pull them away and keep them from being centered.   Some strategies to get quiet and connect to your greater self is prayer, mediation, walk in nature, listen to what you're hearing without allowing your mind think for you. Teens can be tuned into everything, and nothing because it's so shallow.  Pain that is not transformed will be transferred. As a parent, what are you transferring that was negative for you and how can you heal yourself? Research shows that this generation of teens is more interested in having a conversation about spirituality. They want to be more connected to a greater connection. Junk drawer: a place where you stuff away the pain. How can you help your teen open their drawer, find a deeper connection to their spiritually to work though their junk drawer? Who is your teens soul-friend? That mirror that helps guide them to their higher self by walking with them through their difficult times, and happy moments.    It's important for parents to share their stories of family so teens can understand who came before them and become inspired by how their family moved forward.       You were made for more! Taking our Irish Celtic music high up in the Great Smoky Mountains to entertain for the holiday was most fitting and special. And while the howling wind and blowing rain were less than pleasant, they gave us the sense of actually being in Ireland! Thanks again for writing, and for all you do for Celtic musicians! We love your show." Sean Malloy of Band o'Brothers emailed a photo: "Hey Marc!  Happy Belated Birthday & St. Patrick's Day!  Hope you had a wonderful time and a wonderful gig with your daughters. Attached is a picture of Band O'Brothers as we prepared to roll through the streets of New Haven in the St. Patrick's Day parade.  We had a blast playing out songs for the joyful people along the parade route, and after we completed the parade route we even stopped our float outside a neighborhood bar to play a few songs for the revelers.  We had a great day!"

Obviously, I am the host of this podcast. But I'm gonna read my current bio on my website like I've done with others. Marc Gunn is a Rhythm & Folk songwriter who fuses Irish and Scottish folk songs with pop culture. One brewery called it Sci F'Irish music. His musical weapon of choice is the autoharp. He breathes acoustic Rock and Roll into this folk instrument and adds a bellowing taste of rhythm & blues. Gunn found musical inspiration performing Irish drinking songs. He learned the art of performing at Renaissance faires and from his childhood idol, Elvis Presley, who said, “You've got to put on a show to draw a crowd.” His concerts are fun filled with sing along songs that get the audience's feet tapping. And now for my song… I first heard the song “Peggy Gordon” from a cassette of Irish Drinking Songs I found at Half-Price Books in Austin, Texas. I learned most of my early Irish song repertoire from that album, songs like “Whiskey in the Jar”, “Big Strong Man, “Wild Rover”, “Bog Down in the Valley” and lots more. Their version of “Peggy Gordon” was short, but memorable. I played it on and off for many years. I remember singing it at a pub in Switzerland when I met Heidi and Stef of the Celtic band Bow Triplets. In July 2009, I met my future wife, Gwen, while touring in Virginia. We had this whirlwind romance and began talking on the phone every day and went to see each other as much as possible even while I was out on tour. I was completely mesmerized by her. A few weeks later, I was back in Austin. I was scheduled to record my next studio album with Rich Brotherton. He's an incredible engineer and had done some brilliant work for Ed Miller and lots of top-notch artists in Texas. I was having trouble singing the song. I was pitchy and my voice lacked any real emotion. The lyrics have this great feeling of love and longing. Which is exactly the feeling I was having with Gwen so far away. And so… I closed my eyes, focused on Gwen, and sang. To this day, I still tell people it is one of my best recordings. Because I feel like I nailed it. And then to top it off, Rich Brotherton added some absolutely beautiful guitar work, as he did throughout that album. It is definitely one of my warmest and lushest and best-produced albums. 1:42:07 - Marc Gunn “Peggy Gordon” from The Bridge 1:46:26 - ENDA REILLY Enda Reilly is a folk singer, songwriter and guitarist from Dublin, Ireland. Firmly rooted in the Irish tradition with songs that strive for a better future, Enda Reilly's work invites you to see the world from his varied and unique perspective through each new song and project. From busking on Grafton Street to the National Concert Hall, Enda has performed on countless stages in his hometown of Dublin and beyond. 1:50:46 - Enda Reilly “Christmas True” from Christmas Is With Us 1:54:07 - CLOSING 1:54:22 - THE CHIVALROUS CRICKETS – LORD OF MISRULE The Crickets explore the roots, branches and crossroads of Celtic and English folk and American Old Time music. With equal attention to exhilarating performances and academic rigor, they bring to the stage boldly reimagined arrangements of standards and originals with traditional influence. With a particular focus on song repertoire, they're known for their rich vocal harmonies and fascinating textural blends incorporating over 15 instruments, both modern and ancient. They're a family band comprising two sisters, two couples and childhood friends. Four of their members are full-time classical musicians as well. 2:02:23 - The Chivalrous Crickets “The Lord of Misrule” from A Chivalrous Christmas The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season. Thanks for sharing beautiful Celtic music with us year round. I've been listening to your show for about 15 years, I got a chance to chat with you at the online Boskone you attended in 2020. (On zoom) You talked about how wonderful traveling was. I haven't travelled overseas since 2019 (because of COVID), but in December my wife and I are going to spend a week exploring Iceland. We're very excited. Christmas is a coming in 2022 with Triskele and the Celtic Christmas Podcast #64. Subscribe at CelticChristmasPodcast.com.  Music from  We Banjo 3, Reilly, Caitríona O'Leary, Triskele, The Barra MacNeils Welcome to the Celtic Christmas Podcast I am Marc Gunn. I am a musician and podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer. I'm working on another new format for this show in 2022. Galway-based We Banjo 3 has one foot in Irish music and one foot in Americana music, seamlessly combining the virtuosity and precision in each genre's traditional disciplines with the artful song-craft and infectious live performance of today's musical landscape. This is their 10th year performing together to thousands of fans at Irish and Bluegrass festivals. Their latest album is called Open the Road. And I'm happy I looked up that information because I can also add it to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast that I host. 0:53 - We Banjo 3 "Joy to the World" from A Winter Wonderful 3:40 - THANK YOU CHRISTMAS PATRONS The Celtic Christmas Podcast is brought to you by the kindness of Celtic Christmas fans on Patreon. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion, and production of the show. Join others to spread Christmas Cheer this holiday season! Sign up for as little as $1 per episode on Patreon. Winners of the folk rock/Celtic band of the year award by Wisconsin Area Music Industry for 2019 and 2015, Reilly have garnered a reputation for being an interactive, get-off-your-chair act. The band's circuit continues to grow along with their reputation for being a highly respected professional group.  National programs such as Good Morning Ireland, Blarney on the Air, and Paddyrock internet radio have featured Reilly.  Celtic Radio Music Network rates them as five out of five stars.  Their ability to adapt Celtic music to an American rock audience, and include unexpected rock favorites into their set, makes them the perfect eclectic choice in today's watered down and predictable Celtic scene. Their latest album is called Durty Pool. You can find it on their Bandcamp page. 4:47 - Reilly "For You On Christmas" from Kick Ass Celtic Christmas 8:13 - PLAYLIST: Christmas Drive There a number of Celtic Christmas playlists that I published on Spotify. The Christmas Drive playlist is Christmas music you will enjoy while taking a holiday drive to see your family or friends. The Wexford Carols is a 2014 album of traditional Irish carols by Caitríona O'Leary featuring guest singers Tom Jones, Rosanne Cash and Carolina Chocolate Drops singer Rhiannon Giddens and more. The album went to No.1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. 8:52 - Caitríona O'Leary "Tell Shepherds" from The Wexford Carols 15:16 - HOLIDAY FEATURE: Triskele Triskele, [pronounced Tris-Kay-lee] is the premier all~female Celtic band out of Albany NY. They are known for their stunning harmonies, singing in the Gaelic language and for their Irish wit. Noeleen, who grew up in Dublin and is the youngest of 16, taught Sharon and Jenn the Gaelic language through song. These ladies perform, primarily, traditional Celtic/Irish music, but also have written originals. Triskele not only revitalizes the Gaelic language, but weaves history and traditions about growing up in Ireland. This gives the listener a deeper appreciation and understanding of Irish/Celtic history. Triskele stands out in a Celtic music world dominated by men. They have gained fans and supporters with their ability to keep traditional songs traditional. Fans have stated that they enjoy hearing songs sung with the unique qualities of the female voice; given the timbre and rich, clear harmonies. I'm particularly smitten with their byline–Celtic Trad. with a Women's Touch Their song “Christmas Is a Comin'” is a new addition to the Celtic Christmas music world. But I'll let them tell you more about it. 16:24 - STORY OF CHRISTMAS IS A COMIN' 18:02 - Triskele “Christmas Is A Comin'” from Christmas Is A Comin' Do you have a Christmas story to share? Drop me an email. Include a picture for our shownotes. 19:57 - WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CELTIC CHRISTMAS SONG IN THIS EPISODE? Make sure you add the song to your own Celtic music playlist or even better, support the artist by buying their music and joining their mailing list, or even joining their Patreon page. Several have that as well. There's another way to share your favorite track in this episode. You can vote for your favorite song or tune when you join us on Patreon. The most-popular track will be added to our Christmas playlists. You have just two weeks to vote. So… Cast your vote for the Celtic Christmas Favorite song. Then let me know if there's a Celtic Christmas song or tune that I should add to the next episode of the show. For more than three decades, Cape Breton-based family group the Barra MacNeils has been thrilling audiences of all ages, near and far, with their sparkling repertoire, vocals, instrumental prowess and vibrant showmanship. They are Canada's Celtic ambassadors! Their Christmas album is currently available on vinyl. You'll also find a wooden tree ornament in their store along with all of their albums. 21:22 - The Barra MacNeils "Party In Washabuckt" from The Christmas Album What did you think of this week's show? Ah some music...yay! Teri Smolens and Seabury Gould join me all the way from Northern California to sing original songs from their album, Newsicals, written during Covidtime. One of a kind!!BIO: Teri Smolens, the singer - songwriter, has a lifelong connection to folk music and a background in musical theater. Growing up in the 1960s and 70s, she also had exposure to classic rock, jazz, blues, and the topical music made popular by the many rallies and protests of the era. Forced into early retirement from her catering business of 25 years by the 2020 lockdown's, she was left with lots of time to research (another passion) and write, shifting her shifting her creative outlet from food to songs. "Newsicals" was created to make the news, in some small way, music to the ears - perhaps easier to take in and digest via melodies and humor.BIO: Seabury Gould is an eclectic musician, multi- instrumentalist, singer, recording artist, music teacher & storyteller. He is perhaps especially known for his singing & playing of guitar, bamboo flute & Irish bouzouki.  He plays solo & with other musicians in a variety of styles including traditional Irish/Celtic music, original songs, folk songs, blues, music of India, & Beatles songs. One of Seabury's main inspirations was folk musician & activist Pete Seeger who coined the phrase "Think Globally, Sing Locally".  He is originally from the Philadelphia area where he started playing guitar at age 11. He has lived on the 'Redwood coast' in Humboldt county for 18 years. Seabury is a composer, songwriter & arranger. He leads singalongs with an emphasis on "Hope-ful songs". In his extensive diverse work for adults & children, he facilitates musical wholeness through exploring how the ear, heart, hands & intelligence can be cultivated.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=36141534)

EATING HUMBLE PIE FOR ST PATRICK'S DAY First let me start with an apology. Last episode, I shared a pet peeve. I said Facebook was my least favorite place to get comments. That's true. But according to my website, I was wrong. There was some old info that said EXACTLY that. Ugh. I screwed up. IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY SOME HUMBLE PIE WITH ME… I have two St Patrick's Day celebrations happening in the Atlanta area this weekend. On Saturday, March 14, I'm at Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA. On Sunday, March 15, I'm at Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur, GA. You can come eat some humble pie with me… or at least toast a pint of beer with me. I'd love to meet you. DO YOU NEED A GUEST ON YOUR PODCAST? But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Morrigan : The Goddess of War

Mythlok - The Home of Mythology

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2022 7:16

The Morrigan was an Irish-Celtic goddess of war and was known to incite violence, rage, frenzy and was also regarded as the bringer of death. The goddess could take any form of creature she wanted, and she was able to bring about the downfall of a hero-warrior named Cu Chulainn after he rejected her numerous attempts to seduce him. Her coupling with the Dagda, another major warrior-god, was an important part of the Samhain festival which the Celts celebrated to mark the beginning of a new year. The Morrigan is a goddess of war, fertility, and battle. She has been referred to as the Phantom Queen, and she is also a part of a trio of goddesses known as the Badb and Nemain. The Morrigan frequently appears in the ornithological guise of a hooded crow. She is one of the Tuatha De Danann (People of the Goddess Danu) and She helped defeat the Firbolgs at the First Battle of Magh Tuireadh and the Fomori at the Second Battle of Mag Tured. The Mórrigan has a terrible appearance, and it is this and her aggression which have a strong psychological effect on whoever she chooses during a battle. At the same time, the goddess can be sexually attractive. Consequently, the Mórrigan is both a symbol of destruction and fertility. The Morrigan is believed to be the daughter of Ernmas (a mother goddess), who was in turn the daughter of Nuada, the king of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Her siblings are variously listed as Ériu, Banba, and Fódla—who made up the triple goddess representing the spirit and sovereignty of Ireland—as well as Badb and Macha. The Morrígan was married to the Dagda, the “Good God” and one of the kings of the Tuatha Dé Danann. There is debate over the meaning of the Morrigan's name. It is believed that the goddess derives from an Indo-European root that is associated with terror. It is also translated as "the queen". The name Morrigan is derived from the word queen, which is often translated to great queen. She is associated with the fury of war, which is why she is sometimes referred to as the queen of demons. The goddess has a variety of powers, such as being able to cast spells and predict the future and she is also capable of changing her form at will. She is also linked with the raven or crow, which is a creature associated with war and death. The Morrigan also has led to the origin of the banshee, who can foretell the death of a household by letting out an extremely loud wail or scream. Usually, she is seen in a physical form as an old woman with long hair. The Morrigan is one of the most popular characters that has been constantly adapted in modern times in numerous mediums and channels. Her symbolisms and characteristics have inspired evil characters in movies, comics, cartoons and novels and is usually the framework around which female characters responsible for chaos usually follows.  Read about the Morrigan at https://mythlok.com/morrigan/

I recently got engaged!  My fiancé and I love the podcast, its always playing like radio in our house and cars.  You mentioned the next Celtic Invasion is in Scotland, which is where we went to go for our honeymoon.  You also mentioned it will be near the beginning of June 2022.  Thats also when we are planning our wedding, and it sees fortuitous that perhaps we can go on the Invasion vacation shortly after our big day.  Have you “Loched” down dates yet? Where can we send a wedding invite?" Katherine McMillan emailed a photo: "Hi Marc, Thanks so much for all you do, I've found many great Irish/Celtic bands through listening to your podcast. I usually listen to it while I'm in the lab at work but we are currently in lockdown here in Victoria, Australia so my work is closed. Instead, I'm listening to the podcast while sorting out all the sheet music for my flute quartet, hoping it will inspire me to arrange more Celtic music for four flutes as it's definitely our favourite type of music to play. At the moment I've got the Rainy Days episode playing; it seemed appropriate given the very cold and wintery days. Thanks again and keep up the great work!"

You asked in this most recent episode (the first I listened to when it was actually released; I really did just catch up) whether we listen with others or alone.  I share podcasts and individual episodes I like, but no one I know listens to podcasts as much as I do.  So, I have taken to sharing individual songs with people, and noting that I discovered them through this podcast.  As for what I do while listening (another question of yours), this is usually working on art for a comic page or going for a walk. Anyway, thank you so much for your podcasts and for the music they introduce to listeners like myself!  :-)" Mathew Solomon emailed some photos: "A Bostonian expat cooking in Istanbul while listening to your podcast. Hey Marc! I've been listening to your podcast for about a year now. I am not Irish by any means, but traditional Irish music has always held a special place in my heart. Its warmth, human spirit, and general optimism despite hardship is a source of comfort and inspiration. My hometown of Boston has a rich history of Irish music, and one of my favorite local haunts is the Burren in Somerville, a traditional Irish pub with regular Irish music featuring local and international artists. Currently I am making a new home for myself abroad, in Istanbul, and your podcast has been a reliable way to help me feel grounded and at home in this new, exhilarating city. I am an avid home cook, and I always look forward to a new episode to give me more wonderful music to listen to while cooking. Below are pictures of some traditional Turkish meals I have cooked while listening to your podcast, and the view from my balcony from which Irish music can be heard emanating. I am also a musician, but not one who would fit naturally into the traditional Irish folk band. Anyone who wants to help me find a way to fit trombone into an Irish folk sound, give me a call! Thank you for spreading such excellent music; I just finished the latest episode (#520) and I am already looking forward to the next one. Cheers, sláinte, and serefe!"

But I confess I'm pretty bummed by Spotify's algorithms. For some weird reason, it has not been promoting the new single. So it's getting minimal play right now. And I don't know why. I planned to release the NEXT single at the end of this month. But I think I'm gonna postpone that one until September so I can get it ready to go. In the meantime, I'm excited to have completed all of the recordings for my next CD, Selcouth. Mitchell, my engineer, and I are putting the final touches on the CD. Because not everyone will enjoy an Irish drinking song for cat lovers, like my final song of the show. 31:19 -- STORIES: I first heard “The Cat Came Back” in 12th grade. I remember laughing at the ridiculousness of the story. But it was never a favorite. I mean, seriously, why would anyone try to kill a cat. I just found that rather disturbing. So when I started working on my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CD, I decided to flip the song upside down. I rewrote the lyrics of “The Moonshiner”. I  learned from the Bedlam Bards. I retold the story from the cat's perspective. This was one of my first toe-dip into writing a call-and-response drinking song. It was a good lesson. 32:55 -- SONG: “The Cat Came Back… The Cat's Perspective” from Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. I featured him in 2017 on Celtfather Music & Travel. He was on episode #214. But I first found out about him in about 2000. He plays in a band called Empty Hats. They released a wonderful song on MP3.com called “The Hat Came Back”. It was such a fun song, when I got to the faire, I knew one person I HAD to have on this podcast. He told me how his band and this song came to be. 10:31 - STORY FROM GIACOMO THE JESTER 11:55 - “The Hat Came Back” by Empty Hats from Empty Hats 14:30 - STORY FROM MARC GUNN I have a new single that will be released on July 29. It's called “By Amazing Grace”. I wrote it for the In the ‘Verse podcast I did with Mikey Mason. You can listen to episode #13 here. The song is about toxic masculinity. Being masculine and strong are fine. But when masculinity is used as a weapon to belittle and control women or anyone, that's when it's a problem. Just like in the Firefly episode, “Heart of Gold,” where I got inspiration for this song. “By Amazing Grace” turns the tables. It's about a man who meets a woman. He woos her. They fall in love. Then his true colors are revealed. He's actually a monster bent on controlling people. When you meet people like that, there are two things you can do. You can allow them to control you or you stand up to them, fight back, teach them that there is a better place than toxic masculinity, one where people are equal. So she fights back with the reminder that real men are those who treasure and support the women they love. 18:22 - “By Amazing Grace” from Selcouth (featuring Andrew McKee of Brobdingnagian Bards and Jamie Haeuser) 22:29 - Adrian Walter is the drummer, dancer, and front man of the bagpipe band Tartanic. If you let him—he'll pick up guitars and penny whistles or a didgeridoo—but heavy medication has aided greatly to quell this urge. 24:48 - STORY FROM TARTANIC 29:22 - “BallZ/Ringworm” by Tartanic from Uncivilized 33:45 -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. I often think about what my ancestors' lives were like when I listen to the music on your podcast. In my research I came across a great photo on the Isle of Rum in the Inner Hebrides. It shows a woman touching a large rock called the "Emigrants Stone." I thought that would be a great title for one of your podcasts dedicated to those Irish and Scots who were forced from their homes and scattered to the many corners of the world. It led to the creation of a great song first recorded by my old band, the Brobdingnagian Bards. It also became the album title for my first official solo CD. Rie Sheridan Rose is a published author and poet. Little did I know when she gave me the lyrics to this song that I would be singing it twenty years later and have collaborated with her on many songs since. You can hear more of her songs and about our collaborations on show #210 of this show. 16:34 - History on Rie's Story I did a search to find out more about this period in history, to sort of corroborate Rie's story. I found several websites that said, yes indeed, it did happen. Here's some info from HipHarp.com: “The Irish harpers began to be suppressed after the Anglo-Norman invasion in the 12th century, which broke down the old cultural systems. The kings, who always had their own personal harpers, who were of very high standing, were replaced with English nobles. The Irish harpers began an existence of wandering from court to court. The English accused them of being spies. Queen Elizabeth decreed in 1603 that all Irish harp players should be hung and their harps burned. Interestingly, the British loved Irish harp music and usually employed harp players of their own. Queen Elizabeth had one. I guess he was immune. Cromwell was even more radical than Elizabeth and pretty much finished them off. Of course the harp tradition didn't die out all at once. Turlough O'Carolan, the most famous of the Irish harpers we have on record lived from 1670-1738. But 1792 was the last harp meeting in Belfast and by the beginning of the 19th century harp playing had pretty much died out. In Scotland the harp players were able to hide out in the Highlands, but the Battle of Culloden (1745?) pretty much finished off Scottish Highland culture and with it the harp players.” 19:32 - “Soul of a Harper” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 23:01 - Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Autoharpers like myself often liken ourselves to actual harpers. The great Irish harper, Turlough O'Carolan, is a favorite of us, but now it's time to highlight an actual harper and songwriter. Sharon Powers is a Celtic harpist in Birmingham, AL. She has played professionally since 2016. Her musical stylings lend both touches of elegance and whimsy that delight the ears of all who listen. She is also the mother of a baby named Arthur as she'll tell you about it in her story. 26:12 - “Arthur's Lullaby” by Sharon Powers from Single -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. Rie and I have collaborated on a lot of songs over the years (check out show #210). It started with the song “Soul of a Harper” which she will tell you about in the next episode. From there, we wrote a Firefly song. Then she wrote over half of my lyrics for Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits. She wrote all of the lyrics for Pirates vs. Dragons. It’s wonderful working with her. She asked me at Sherwood if I wanted to do any new song collaborations. I thought about it for  a moment. One of Rie’s methods for writing songs for our hobbit album was to take traditional Irish songs and then writing them in that style. I do that myself quite frequently. I find a great song, and I write something similar. I did it with “The Prettiest Hobbit”. That was based on the Irish song “I’ll Tell My Ma”. But one song that is brilliant and timeless and there are not many songs like it is “Star of the County Down”. It’s just a delightful song to sing and a joyful story. So I asked Rie to write such a song either hobbit-like or Celtic or whatever. Hopefully, we’ll get something great. In the meantime, I’m excited to share with you Rod Nevin’s own story about “Star of the County Down”. But first... 8:06 - TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS. In this inaugural episode of the Wake Up, Human podcast, I talk with Tonja Reichley, an herbalist, ritualist and author in the Irish Celtic tradition. Our conversation centers on the theme of the mythic resistance: exploring myth as portal to finding our place – and our strength – within the often confusing matrix of modern cultural and social identities.
