We explore Jin Yong's path to becoming China's best selling writer, putting out more books than JK Rowling. These days Taiwan is known to be the most free and democratic country in Asia, but it wasn't always that way. It's hard to imagine that Taiwan has had a very dark period of history during which there was massive censorship. At one time Taiwan had the longest period of martial law in the world at 38 years. During the martial law period from 1949 to 1987, and the White Terror era that extended beyond the lifting of Taiwan's martial law, there was no freedom of speech, expression or thought, and advocating for the independence of Taiwan was a crime punishable by death. She collaborates with fact-checkers to monitor disinformation trends in Taiwan and produces analysis reports for both English and Chinese audiences. Her English analyses are published in Taiwan FactCheck Center's biweekly newsletter "TFC Disinfo Detector."   Li received her Ph.D. degree at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include propaganda, social media content moderation, free speech challenges faced by democratic countries, and privacy issues in the digital era. She has published scholarly articles in academic journals, books, and law reviews.   Before pursuing an academic career, she offered consulting services on digital human rights in Asia. She also worked as a journalist for media outlets in Taiwan for several years. She earned her LL.M. I left New York City by myself. My physical destination was Blue Cliff Monastery, a meditation center established by Thay Thich Nhat Hanh in update New York. He was a great Buddhism master from Vietnam. Oh, also, I broke my glasses. So I was half-blind. While reading the part I came to New York for love in the application letter, she let out a cute laugh. To me, her laugh was telling me, “Yeah. We've all been there”. She, in person, was an accurate personification of that laugh, understanding my struggles and helping me settle down in the dormitory. The second I laid my head on my new bed, I could finally find a hint of peacefulness in my world. The monastery was located in a very serene forest. My ears, getting used to the rowdy New York, could actually hear sounds that you'd have ignored, like the sound of falling leave, whistling of the wind, footfalls of some wild animals. Speaking of wild animals, I met some dears around my dorm cabin on my first day here. They were scared by my sudden presence at first. But we got along after returning their "welcome" by feeding one of them. I sent the picture of them to a friend. She said she'd dreamed about them before. I lost sight of them for several days there. One day, the very same friend surprise visited me with medicine and fruits because I'd been sickened by a fever for several days. The clock will ring a bell every 15 minutes, a reminder for everyone to go back to their inner selves. So on hearing the sound of the bell or the singing bowl, everyone will stop talking or walking and spend some seconds being with themselves. Mindful Sangha meals will be served and eaten in silence so that you can feel every chew of the delicious food in your mouth and appreciate such a dietary blessing from Mother Nature. Walking and sitting meditations are led by monastics for lay friends every day. His long hair in a bun, baggy pants, and round glasses made him look like a brother of mine. His slow mannerism and soft words manifest great peacefulness. We exchanged some small talks and life stories. Thanks to Luc, I was already feeling that my lonesome soul was starting to stop fidgeting and letting itself get back on its road to its spiritual home. It's in everyone's blood. When you see something is not tidy in the kitchen or bathroom, you'd put them back in order instead of walking away from them. This is what happened to my laundry one day. I put all my laundry in the washer and set up a timer for an hour to come back to put them in the dryer. Yet, by the time I got back, all my laundry was already in the dryer thanks to a nameless samaritan. I left a thank-you note for this kind stranger. Later I found out it was Sister Manifest. In later days, we shared some laughs when cleaning and washing in the kitchen together. I guess the natural spirit of volunteering and always being thoughtful to others is core to keeping this community together. You don't rely on one system or one person to maintain the operation and spirits of one community. I always found myself walking around the others. Instead of meditating with the group, I often found a quieter slot to meditate by myself in the meditation hall. Like I said, I still felt under the weather due to the fever and I was paranoid that it might be COVID, so I chose to isolate myself most of the time. That physical and spiritual isolation went on even after I felt better physically and mentally. Then Brother Dailuc sat next to me and greeted me with joined palms before dining. Between his eyes, I felt a great stream of softness and kindness mixed with a tinge of sadness. After the silent 20 minutes passed, we started to talk. I wasn't feeling shy or paranoid around him and his energy. Just like the softness between his eyes, his words and smile were equally gentle to me. One thing led to another, we started to talk about our depression days before and how we overcame it. It was the Buddha in our hearts and friends and family in reality who lit the way for us in those difficult times. After lunch, he invited me for a walk around the mountains. I had rarely talked to anyone in my first 5 days. And with Brother Dailuc, I started to pour all my thoughts and emotions to him and he took them well with words of wisdom and encouragement. It was my usual hangout after dinner since I had the big room for myself and had access to all kinds of tea I want. The English calligraphies on the wall by Thich Nhat Hanh were great reminders for us to do everything with great consciousness. Then V, a girl I said hi to before, entered the room. We weren't really close. But her hearty smile brought us closer. It turned out that V, a Vietnamese student in the US, spoke Chinese fluently. What amazed me more was her baking skills. That night, she came to the dining room to bake banana bread for everyone. Of course, I was the fortunate first genie pig for her only batch of bread that night. While bread-tasting together, we talked in the dining room for almost 2 hours about food, languages, cultures and life. I learned so much about her and her country. For example, I had no idea that Jin Yong's books and the TV shows based on his books could be a common topic for Vietnamese and Chinese to talk about forever! 一天晚上，我坐在餐厅看书。这是我晚餐后经常去的地方，因为我可以独享整个空间，并且可以享用我想喝的各种茶。一行禅师在墙上的英文书法很好地提醒了我们做每件事时都要有“念”。然后V走进了房间，一个我之前打过招呼的女孩。我们不是很熟悉，但她爽朗的笑容让我们距离近了一些。原来，V是一名越南留美的大学生，能说一口流利的中文，更让我吃惊的是她的烘焙技巧。那个晚上，她来到餐厅是为了给大家烤香蕉面包。当然，那晚我是一个幸运儿，能够品尝她做出来的的第一批面包。在一起品尝面包的同时，我们在餐厅里聊了将近两个小时，谈论食物、语言、文化和生活。我对她和她的国家了解了很多。比如，我从没想到金庸的书和根据书改编的电视剧可以成为越南人和中国人永远谈论的话题！To this day, that banana aftertaste and V's smile still linger in my tastebud and memory foam. 直到今天，香蕉的回甜和 V 的笑容仍然萦绕在我的味蕾和记忆中。… My friend Haoruo surprised me on Jan 2, 2022, my third day in Blue Cliff. Well, the reason why she rushed here all the way from New York was that I was still quite sick with a fever. Endless headaches stopped me from being the person I want to be. Yet her visit brought some glimmers of hope and energies of vitality to my sick body and mind. However, she had to go back to New York on the same day, but there were no cabs around in the forest that can take her to Middletown to catch the last train to New York. In dire situations like this, Haoruo and I always find a solution by the help of kind people. This time the superhero who saved us from troubled waters was Athena, mother of a very cute 8-year-old, Dagony. 2022 年 1 月 2 日，我在蓝崖的第三天，我的朋友皓若给了我一个惊喜，突然探望我。她从纽约一路赶到这里的原因是我还发着烧，无休止的头痛让我无法做自己，她的探望给我生病的身心带来了一丝希望和活力。可她又不得不在当天返回纽约，森林里没有出租车可以带她去米德尔敦搭上去纽约的末班车。在这种危急情况下，我和皓若总是能在好心人的帮助下找到解决办法。这次把我们从困境中拯救出来的英雄是雅典娜，她是一位非常可爱的8岁孩女孩——戴戈妮——的母亲。Haoruo and I went to the dining room on the sister's side to try our luck to see if anybody happened to go to Middletown so that we could share a ride. Yet, it was already after dusk. All day-time visiting lay friends had already gone home. So such news brought furrowed brows to Haoruo and me. However, the brothers and sisters started to spread the word. Even though I didn't understand any Vietnamese, the expressions on their faces looked optimistic to us. Within 5 minutes, our superhero, Athena, showed up with her ride. When we learned that it was Athena who was driving us to the train station, we couldn't be happier. We loved her and her perky energy! I offered Haoruo a long hug as her train was coming. She asked me for a promise, a promise to talk about my pain with someone in the community. And I fulfilled that promise. On our way back, Athena listened to my pain and stories. Suddenly, she felt like a mother to me. A mother who was driving her heartbroken son back home. There's Brother Emptiness, the senior monastic who talked about Jin Yong's wuxia books and books about Xuanzang with me. There's the brother who I deem as the funniest guy in Vietnamese in spite of his broken English. He joked that I looked like a monastic from the Wu-tang Clan in Jin Yong's book. There's Abishek who talked about love with me and introduced me the Dharma meditation camp. There's this sister who introduced me to great books by Thich Nhat Hanh and explained the Heart Sutra for me. There's another sister who I've cleaned dishes with in the kitchen and who is just like my bigger sister. There's Riles who played basketball with me, talked about his vagabond life in the US and drove me to the train station. One day, I'm sure he'll vagabond his way to China and to my van. We'll tour around China for sure. In the epilogue, he shared one story about always going back to your spiritual home. Jin Yong, sometimes known by his English name Louis Cha, was the most popular and influential "wuxia" or martial arts fantasy author who ever lived. Indeed, he was one of the bestselling author in any language of all time. But his books are almost entirely unknown outside of the Chinese-reading world. Part of that is due to the extreme difficulty of translation: although he wrote in the 1950s and '60s, most of his novels have not been translated into English.A second problem is that, despite the wuxia label, his novels are also generally historical fiction. Typically, a fictional protagonist moves through a specific period in Chinese history interacting with both other fictional characters and real historical figures. Readers unfamiliar with that history are much less likely to understand or enjoy the narrative.Here we discuss two of his novels in particular: "The Condor Heroes," three out of four volumes of which now have a good, modern English translation; and "The Book and the Sword," Jin Yong's debut novel set in the mid-18th century that just so happens to be about Uyghur Muslims resisting an oppressive central Chinese government in the Empire's northwestern periphery...

First released in 1994 and then re-edited and re-scored in 2008, Wong’s time-slipping picaresque takes loose inspiration from Jin Yong’s novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes, focusing on a lovesick, embittered mercenary (Leslie Cheung), who acts as an agent for other swordsmen of fortune. Working with regular production designer William Chang, cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and a superb ensemble (Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung, and Jacky Cheung), Wong constructs an intricate, enigmatic vision of ancient warriors ensnared by the play of time and memory. I had the great pleasure of interviewing Michael Yang, CEO of TikTok Agents. TikTok Agents is a California-based TikTok Marketing and Advertising agency. Michael is originally from China, went to university in the US, and has worked across several companies in gaming and consumer tech. Michael’s professional and educational background gives him perspective on the East and West that I don’t hear often enough. I really enjoyed reading his answers and hope you will too.What are the most exciting trends you are seeing in China today?There are so many trends happening in China right now. 5G and AI both unleash great imagination and prospects for the country. As far as the industry I am working in, I think the most promising sector in the near future is the new consumer retail industry. With the rapid development of platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou, the time for a brand to go from creation to becoming a major player in the market is getting shorter and shorter. And the whole integration of online e-commerce stores with brick-and-mortar stores is getting better and better. I think in the near future, online and offline will be fully integrated. Merchants will be able to comprehensively evaluate and quantify store performance from multiple dimensions, and consumers can also have a better shopping experience. How has the coronavirus affected your business and other businesses in your industry?I run a TikTok marketing & advertising company in the United States. This year, affected by the pandemic, billions of people left their jobs and were forced to stay at home. It is during this time period that many creators jumped into TikTok to become TikTok influencers. Many users also found joy and relaxation by coming to TikTok. This has brought TikTok rapid growth in its worldwide user base, including rapid expansion in the US. Therefore, in terms of overall environment, the pandemic has created favourable external growth for TikTok. Of course, the impact of the pandemic is reflected elsewhere. For example, because of shelter in place in California, our team was forced to work online. This was the first time that I led the team through online collaboration. This is a new challenge for me and the team. Fortunately, our business is mainly online. We were able to accomplish most of our online tasks seamlessly, but we still need to improve on management and collaboration. What is one thing people outside of China misunderstand about the country?Wow, this is a very big topic. I think first, it depends on how you define the term “people outside of China.” I have lived in the US and the UK for the past 10 years, talking with people in different cities and different places. I have heard highly prejudiced opinions or bias about China, and I have also heard far-sighted and considerate views about China. I think this mainly depends on the person’s positioning and experience. Just like me 10 years ago, when I first set foot in the United States, I discovered that the United States was completely different from what I saw on TV in China. I only discovered and felt all of these things by experiencing them in person.Overall, a lot of foreign people have a fixed stereotype that the Chinese government uses heavy-handed control to suppress the people, and the Chinese people will need to accept rules that may lead to a lack of human rights or freedom. But in my opinion, China is a completely pragmatic country and society. The Chinese government’s management model is totally results-oriented. For example, since the start of the epidemic, many Western media outlets have blamed the Chinese government for shutting down Wuhan. However, the fundamental reasoning of the government is that everything needs to be results-oriented. They were controlling the pandemic, reducing the speed of spread, and halting the number of infections and casualties. That is the purpose of their work.So the foreigners were surprised and worried about human rights when the Chinese people were willing to accept the government’s compulsory control during the pandemic. Meanwhile, the Chinese people were worried and surprised about the irresponsible and ridiculous actions of foreign people who refused to wear masks and quarantine. An important concept in economics is the trade-off between fairness and efficiency. An excellent social structure is able to maximize efficiency while ensuring fairness. In my view, Western society emphasizes fairness, while Chinese society emphasizes efficiency. The same principle is applied when we talk about doing business in China. If the result can be achieved in a short time, no matter what measures one may possibly use, it will be the most favorable choice.What are some companies you admire in China?Personally, I admire Bytedance. Bytedance’s products are very attractive and have strong user stickiness. As a young CEO, Zhang Yiming manages a team of more than ten thousand people. He has strong leadership and personal charisma, which makes him a role model for our generation.What is the single most important piece of advice you would give to someone trying to get their business to thrive in this time period?Hard times create heroes. The mission of starting any business is to solve problems and create value. In this year of frustration, loss, risks, and challenges, each of these “problems” need a solution. And every one of these solutions means an opportunity. So difficult times may also be a good thing for entrepreneurs. So now you know the main differences between Wushu and Kungfu. However, you will still get people who will use the terms interchangeably. And as a consequence, their martial arts journey will be long and difficult. There is no point in arguing about it. What matters is that you now know and that you have, or are in the process of, deciding where you stand in all of this. Wushu is more about the sport side of things and is a great pathway in China, if your career involves physical activities like being a stuntman, policeman, bodyguard or just being a career fighter. Kungfu on the other hand can be a lonely path, that unless involves operating a dojo or being a village doctor, rarely is directly about the money. The author Jin Yong a.k.a. Louis Cha from 'Legends of the Condor Heroes' did a great job in liberating the Kungfu way of life from ignorance and superstition. While a lot of what he wrote was totally made-up nonsense, before he came along, many of the Chinese Kungfu masters were seen as charlatans or sorcerers meddling in witchcraft. Feared by the peasantry and seen as fools by the nobility. And that was just the Kungfu masters who kept their hands clean. So take my advice: Stay on the Wushu side of things. Enjoy the show and don't go looking backstage. Live in the limelight and avoid the shadows. It's just a bunch of old-timers playing mahjong.

You know... A funny thing about people that say martial arts is all bullshit, is that they are some of the biggest consumers of martial arts literature and artwork. After having been told countless times about all the fantasy stuff and how it's not real, it amazes me that afterward I still get asked if any of it is actually real? I usually answer that a lot of it is written by people who don't do or know any martial arts for people like themselves to enjoy. And I try to leave it at that. But then now you must be wondering: If I've left it at that, why do I write so many articles and have a podcast series? I do it because I enjoy sharing my experiences. And by sharing, I continue to grow as a martial artist, walking the path to wherever it leads me. A path both like Baguazhang 八卦掌 always circular and like the I-Ching 易經 always changing. It's never static. And as it evolves, I find in the method of podcasting a way to bring clarity to some of the confusing aspects surrounding the experience of living Baguazhang 八卦掌 every single day. Remarkably those daily experiences, which to me can be quite ordinary, I'm finding it easier and easier to discuss with others on the martial arts path versus those who are not, because non-martial artists can't relate to my world without using references from Wuxia 武俠. For me, like so many other western martial artists married into the Chinese community, the unwritten yardstick tends to be 金庸 Jin Yong's Wuxia 武俠 novels like Legend of the Condor Heroes 射鵰英雄傳. If it's not the Kungfu 功夫 then it's the Qigong 氣功. There's always something that makes one never being able to measure up. Until of course, somebody like me comes along and thinks: Okay. So his stories are what I'm being measured against. So let's read his stuff... Bullshit. Bullshit. Not real. These characters piss me off. What kind of story is this. You're kidding me, right? Hey, this stuff is pretty good. Lightness Kungfu, what's that? I wonder if any of it can be done in the real world? And then a magical thing happens. At least that's the way I want to portray it: That impossible yardstick disappears. It disappeared because the truth is that when we are living our martial art, we are literally writing our own Wuxia story albeit set in the here and now. Every training session, every fight, every direct or indirectly related experience is building the legend that is your story.  And something internal also happens. Maybe it's an internal martial arts thing, but by reading those novels we become a part of it and it becomes a part of us. The deeper allusions make sense to us in a way not understood by those who don't do martial arts. And we become the translator of the finer points. Those finer points, once deeply grasped accelerates our own chi cultivation in ways few of us can truly comprehend except place a milestone that reads "Been there, Done that".

Martial arts enthusiasts from abroad are likely familiar with stars such as Jackie Chan and the late-Bruce Lee, who are renowned for their Kung Fu skills. But ask someone in China who the REAL master in the Kung Fu world is, many are likely to point to novelist Jin Yong. Just like the recently-passed Stan Lee, who created the Marvel Universe, Jin Yong created his own fantasy world of heroes. His particular genre combines martial arts, fantasy and romance, which is known in China as Wuxia.

We talk about Chang Cheh's 1981 film based on the Jin Yong story "Sword Stained with Royal Blood". This is a review of Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born, the first book in a tranlsation of the Jin Yong classic. It is translated by Anna Holmwood and published by Maclehose Press. This is a review of an early proof, the printed edition should be available in February and they will be releasing the remaining 3 volumes (with a release schedule of 1 per year). Here is the news.Chang&`&e 5, China&`&s newest lunar probe, will bring 2 kilograms of lunar soil and rock samples back to Earth before the end of this year.The project&`&s chief said the month-long Chang&`&e 5 mission will be the most sophisticated lunar expedition China has ever made. It will face many challenges including the great number of demanding maneuvers and the complicated conditions of its landing site. The 8-metric ton probe has four components, an orbiter, lander, ascender and re-entry module. After the probe reaches lunar orbit, the components will separate into two parts. The orbiter and re-entry module will remain in orbit while the lander and ascender will descend towards the moon&`&s surface. The lander and ascender will make a soft landing, using small rockets to slow descent. They will get to work, using a drill to collect underground rocks and a mechanical arm to gather lunar soil. After two days, the ascender&`&s rocket will elevate it to lunar orbit to dock with the re-entry module. It will transfer lunar samples to the module, which will carry them to Earth. The samples are to be distributed to scientists around the country for research.This is Special English.After sending a probe to Mars in 2020, China plans to explore three asteroids and land on one of them to conduct scientific research.The "China&`&s Space Activities of 2016" white paper has been issued by the Information Office of the State Council recently. It mentioned asteroid exploration in outlining the major tasks of the country&`&s space industry in the next five years.According to the white paper, China decided to conduct expeditions to asteroids, and then to Jupiter and its satellite system after the Mars expedition.Experts say the plan is to fly a probe by an asteroid, to fly side by side with an asteroid for a period, and to land on a third one to conduct in situ sampling analysis on the surface.So far, only the United States and Japan have landed probes on asteroids. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing. The Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin, the capital of Northeast China&`&s Heilongjiang province, is helping more than 300 Siberian tigers to lose weight. The process is being done by adding more exercise to their daily routine and cutting back on their food intake. Photos of the tigers circulated online and received wide attention from internet users, who compared the endangered big cats to orange tabby cats including comic-strip character Garfield. People questioned whether the captive tigers have been overfed by tourists at the park, the world&`&s largest Siberian tiger breeding and field training center. A chief engineer at the park, Liu Dan, said the tigers&`& obesity is a seasonal phenomenon. Liu said some tigers in the park look very chubby, but it has nothing to do with tourists feeding them. In fact, it is natural for them to devour more in order to adapt to acute weather conditions during the winter. The weight of a male Siberian tiger increases by around 10 percent in winter. Jinyong, he is, sort of like the modern Shakespeare in Chinese literature. (John:Really?) Because he is that how big he is. Xiaohua: In Wuxia xiaoshuo. John: In terms of influence. Xiaohua: In terms of influence. Certainly we are not talking about artistic achievements. Heyang: Not really in literature skills and aesthetics that way. But it’s a huge deal and always creates a lot of controversy when people are not faithful to his original works. And I think that’s what’s happening here, as the heroine Xiao Longnv has been changed from an ice queen into a cute girl next door, just totally shakes our belief and what this character should be. That is something that we are not happy about. John: I’m having absolutely no connections to this. I think this is just what happens with remakes, adaptations, and reinterpretations. And this happens more specifically in Hollywood these days where you take a book that is becoming very very popular and you adapt it into a movie. And of course those die-hard fans who have invested so much of their emotions, so much of their life into these characters and into the story. They go into the theater and see something that was quite not what their imagination gave to them originally, they are going to be disappointed. Heyang: But here I think Yu Zheng has really gone down the path of … John: Could it be just as said that everyone hates Yu Zheng? Xiaohua: Could be. It really could be. Heyang: That’s (because) he already ruined another piece of classic that Jin Yong wrote, the Sword’s Man笑傲江湖. He has already made that into something that anyone who read the books don’t recognize at all. And maybe he’s trying to make his work fit the taste of his core audience, which is probably those post 1990s, born after that year or the Millennium. But it just seems like he is not doing a really good job, and I think that’s something that’s annoying people a lot. Here I am talking about the really disgusting CGIs. John: This is a problem with Chinese production in general perhaps. But when you look at reinterpretations, I think the aesthetics are going to change. The last time this was made was in 2006. There was a remake of this specific story. That’s 8 years ago, that’s quite a long time and especially in terms of China’s development, cultural and economic. So I think the aesthetics and the story telling style have probably changed enough, for at least people to give this chance, maybe. Heyang: Actually I don’t think people’s aesthetics has changed that much. Just he is doing a bad job because the remake in 2006 starring Liu Yifei as the main heroine, it actually received quite a lot of applauses. And this one, oh man, I looked at people’s messages after viewing it online, I couldn’t see one good praise. Xiaohua: But sometimes I think people are being picky. Because you remember all those previous remakes, when they first appeared, there were a lot of criticisms as well. There were criticisms about Liu Yifei’s face is being too round, although this time the heroine’s face is rounder than hers. John: But she has a sharp chain, right? Heyang: No, she does not. Xiaohua: Yeah the current one doesn’t, but Liu Yifei did. So she was a better looking person. John: I just think it’s always interesting because a lot of the comments whenever we deal a topic like this were like, why can’t Chinese people be more creative? We have (Xiaohua: the mirror mirror) yeah, also different ones like Sleeping Beauty, we have one, we have Snow White, there’s one. There are so many different remakes so you have to wonder if it is not just China but in terms of these very very well-funded big projects hasn’t that much creativity because creativity is risky. Xiaohua: Yeah I think so. Also I wonder why Chinese people are specifically not fond of changing the original plot a little bit because all those remakes that you talked about fairy tales and stuff, and Spider Man, they were way different from their originals.
