Ready to Set Sail (Ben Pease) - May 31, 2026 by Bethany Covenant Church
In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Kyle and Brent Pease. The Pease brothers are a world-renowned push-assist duo, disability advocates, and co-founders of The Kyle Pease Foundation, a nonprofit that champions inclusivity in sports and the workforce for individuals with disabilities. Their inspiring journey has captivated audiences worldwide, especially after they made history as the first brother team to complete the grueling IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, as a push-assist duo. Born with cerebral palsy, Kyle has defied expectations, completing over 150 races alongside Brent and empowering individuals with disabilities through his personal journey. As a tireless advocate, Kyle inspires others to pursue their dreams, regardless of the barriers they face. Kyle is actively involved with The Kyle Pease Foundation, focusing on initiatives like adaptive sports equipment, inclusive employment, and scholarship programs. A graduate of Kennesaw State University with a degree in Sports Management, he also works part-time as a greeter at Publix and at Atlanta Braves games, where he spreads his message of inclusion and resilience. As the Executive Director of The Kyle Pease Foundation, Brent brings both passion and expertise to the cause. A seasoned endurance coach and multi-sport athlete, Brent has completed over 125 races, including 6 IRONMAN events with Kyle. His journey in sports began in 2007 and has since evolved into a career advocating for greater inclusivity in sports and employment for individuals with disabilities. Brent's leadership has fueled the Foundation's mission to break down barriers and promote inclusive employment through programs like the Inclusive Employment Program. He is a Florida State University alumnus and resides in Atlanta with his wife and two children. Together, Brent and Kyle continue to pave the way for inclusion in both sports and society. Through The Kyle Pease Foundation, they have championed 100's of athletes and raised over $10 million, providing adaptive equipment and opportunities that empower individuals with disabilities to realize their full potential. Lora Copley never thought she'd be editor of The Banner. When her name first came up, she sent back a crying-laughing emoji. She was a campus minister in Iowa, not a journalist. But on a Saturday afternoon — the day before the application deadline, while her daughter was napping — the thought wouldn't leave her alone. She put in her résumé fully expecting to be politely declined, and instead found herself in Florida, at the Multiply 222 conference, receiving a call she hadn't seen coming. In part one of our conversation, Lora tells the story of how God redirected her into the Banner, and what she's learned about the publication, the denomination, and the work in front of her. This episode is for anyone who has thrown the Banner in the recycling and assumed nothing was going to change. Lora walks us behind the curtain — how feature articles get planned a year in advance, how unsolicited columns come in, how the Our Shared Ministry pages work, and why submissions have nearly tripled since December. She's not asking the CRCNA to manage decline. She's reading Hebrews 11 and the COD report side by side and refusing to pretend the gospel has shrunk. She wants to know what God is doing in Houston and Pease, Minnesota, and Acton, Ontario — and she wants The Banner to be the place where we hear about it. The payoff is the moment Jason calls out in real time: he's been one of the Banner's most vocal critics for six years, and he's genuinely encouraged. Lora's vision — a publication that speaks with and within the denomination, that helps the CRCNA know both God and itself, that holds Calvin's twin pillars of wisdom together — is exactly the kind of cross-pollination a denomination in reformation requires. Part two picks up with Lora's dreams for the next five years, the Banner's confessional turn, and her nerves heading into Synod. If you think mending is just lifting your rod and flipping it upstream—well sometimes it is—but there is so much more you can do with line mends to add slack in just the right places, and to deal with tricky currents. Mike Pease [30:41], Orvis-endorsed guide and great storyteller, gives us 10 tips for increasing the utility of your line mends. I learned a bunch of new tricks on this podcast and I am sure you will as well. There are some helpful tips from listeners and some questions that may answer things you have been curious about, including: When would you use a drop shot nymphing rig? Have you ever used a dry fly, nymph, and wet fly at the same time? I am debating about which Helios rod to buy. Should I get the 9 foot 5 weight or the 9-foot 5-inch version? Can I use the longer rod for wade fishing? A listener gives his version of a Euro rig for steelhead. Which 10-foot rod should I get for Lake Erie steelhead? Do you think tying a dropper to the bend of a hook is any hindrance to fish taking the upper fly? Sometimes when I hook a big fish it takes line right away and my tippet breaks. Do you think my drag is set too tight? How tight should I set my drag? A great tip from a listener on an easy way to remove split shot with a tool everyone carries. You say that trout can always see the tippet. If so, why would I ever want to use something as fine as 6X?
Wildwood, Amy Pease's sequel to Northwoods, gripped me from the first scene when a young woman is discovered missing. We chat about her fictional setting of Shaky Lake, which is based on Wisconsin's Minocqua resort area. The formidable Sheriff Marge North and her son Elia again team up with Alyssa Mason, an FBI agent from Chicago to investigate why and how an undercover informant disappeared. Their search leads them to discover terrifying secrets about a local rehab clinic. Learn what inspired Amy's fascinating and complex characters, the origin story behind Northwoods and Wildwood, and why she cannot hate any of her characters, even the bad guys! Bonus: Amy dishes which sexy Hollywood actor inspired Eli North. It's January, which means it's time for our annual team conversation — just Jason, Willy, and Dan talking about where we are, where the CRC is, and where we think things need to go. After life updates (Dan's upcoming sabbatical, Willy's new pastor in Pease, Jason's transition into school ministry), we dive into an honest assessment of the denomination's current state. Willy frames it well: the CRC has spent the last few years establishing what we're against, but now we're struggling to articulate what we actually stand for. That's the opposite of how our confessions work — they lead with affirmations, then denials. We've done it backwards. The result? An unsettling quietness across the denomination. People are asking "now what?" and nobody has a clear answer. We talk about the temptation to start another fight just to rally the troops — and why that's exactly the wrong move. This is the rebuilding phase. And rebuilding starts with identity. In this episode, guest host Trey Allis chats with Dr. Lindsay Pease of the University of Minnesota Crookston. An Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in Nutrient and Water Management, Dr. Pease shares insights into her research on drainage, nutrient management, and soil health in northwestern Minnesota. Tracing her roots in the western Lake Erie basin in Ohio to her current work in the Red River Valley, Dr. Pease reflects on the similarities and differences between these two flat glacial landscapes. She shares her experience of getting “deeper and deeper into drainage” and how this interest brought her to her position in Crookston, MN.Since 2019, Dr. Pease has conducted a 60-acre field experiment, studying crop outcomes in alternating drained and undrained sections. Through extreme weather conditions, she's gathered valuable information about how tile drainage impacts water quality and crop performance. She shares the outcomes of this research and talks about what she's learned about tile drainage and its impacts on the health of soil, water, and different types of crops.Chapters:00:00 - Introduction00:48 - From one glacial lake bed to another02:14 - Focus on drainage and soil health03:39 - Unique challenges in northwestern Minnesota05:31 - Crop rotation and nutrient cycling08:33 - A 60-acre field experiment10:53 - Drainage and extreme weather patterns12:16 - Wet seasons and nitrogen loss13:37 - Testing in drought conditions16:00 - Sugar beet drainage comparisons19:36 - Phosphorus runoff and water quality22:34 - Conservation practices for runoff control26:06 - Controlled drainage and lift stations30:40 - Future research directions33:18 - Upcoming learning opportunities36:03 - Closing thoughtsRelated Content:The Water Table Episode #69: A City Kid's Impact on Water Management Education with Dr. Lindsay PeaseFind us on social media!Facebook Twitter InstagramListen on these podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts Spotify YouTube MusicYouTubeVisit our website to explore more episodes & water management education.

As new tools using generative AI promise to change the way we litigate and conduct discovery, what are the implications for day-to-day litigation workflows? On today's episode of LawNext, we feature a conversation with three guests about how law firms are navigating the urgency around gen AI adoption while staying grounded in practical realities. LawNext host Bob Ambrogi recorded this conversation at e-discovery company Everlaw's annual Summit in San Francisco, where gen AI was very much the talk of the conference — from new product announcements to candid discussions about how law firms are actually putting these tools to work. His guests are: Adam Borgman, senior associate in the labor and employment group at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. Julie Brown, director of practice technology at Vorys. Joshua Schnoll, Everlaw's chief marketing officer. They talk about how Vorys has taken a disciplined approach to mapping lawyers' workflows before plugging in AI, why understanding how your professionals currently work is the essential first step before adopting new technology, and how tools like Everlaw's newly released Deep Dive are helping attorneys find insights across millions of documents that they might never have discovered on their own – including, as you will hear, a rather unexpected story involving Tums. They also discuss the cost considerations around AI, the trust factor that still gives many lawyers pause, and what advice these experts have for firms that have not yet started experimenting with gen AI. Kyle and Brent Pease aren't just athletes; they're the driving force behind the Kyle Pease Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to creating inclusion for people with disabilities through sports and life experiences. Kyle, who was born with cerebral palsy, and his brother Brent, have completed countless endurance races, including six Ironman races together. If you just looked at a picture of them in the races, you might think that Brent is doing all the work as he pushes, pulls and carries Kyle. But as we'll hear in this interview, the two really push, pull and carry each other equally. In this interview, the Pease brothers invite us behind the scenes of their journey—and into the positive mental attitudes that keeps them moving forward. They talk candidly about: The emotional truth of racing as a team The distinction between what we choose and what chooses us Kyle's lifelong decision to embrace positivity How gratitude can transform even the hardest miles What it's like to carry each other—physically, mentally, and spiritually Why presence, not speed, is the real secret to strength It's a conversation about endurance, yes, but even more about vulnerability, resilience, gratitude, inclusion, acceptance and love.
