In this episode, we're going to talk with Ms. Divine Bailey-Nicholas, midwife apprentice, doula, certified lactation counselor, and master herbalist about her career in birth work, advocacy and plant medicine in Louisiana. We learn how she utilizes a community model of care that brings resources and education to combat maternal health deserts in the Deep South of the US.   Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Ms. Divine is proud of her Delta, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia roots. Her cultural foundation breathes through her plant medicine and birth work. Currently, Ms. Divine is a charter member of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Louisiana chapter, where her role is historian. She's a member of the Healthy St. Landry Steering Committee and member of the Community Partners Advisory Sub-Community for the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative. Divine is also the founder and executive director of Community Birth Companion, a nonprofit organization working to decrease infant and maternal mortality rates through childbirth education, breastfeeding support, and community doula support in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, where she resides with her husband and four children.   Ms. Divine shares the reality of maternity care in the Southern US, including high rates of morbidity, mortality, and poor infant outcomes, especially among Black women. Ms. Divine shares how she has been inspired by the work of Grand Midwife Shafia Monroe to become a resource to her community and is working to improve birth outcomes and combat maternal health deserts through her perinatal safe space, the Community Birth Companion. Through a community model of care, Ms. Divine is providing education and empowerment to the families she serves. Since 2002, she has trained thousands of people in doula trainings, with one-third of them going on to become midwives. In 2012, Shafia received her Master of Public Health from Walden University. In 2014, she opened Shafia Monroe Consulting, a cultural competency training service. Shafia has received numerous awards for her work, including the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Midwife Hero Award. Shafia Monroe is a legendary midwife of more than 36 years, a wife, mother of 7, author, President of Doula Ready, LLC, Shafia Monroe Consulting, and founder of ICTC (International Center for Traditional Childbearing), now NAABB (National Association to Advance Black Birth). Divine Nicholas is well versed in birth work support, not only from the spectrum of which her children were born - birth center to hospital transfer, homebirth, and unassisted births but also in how she has supported families.Her journey as a birth worker began after the birth of her second child, when she trained as a doula with the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC), under the founder Shafia Monroe. In the early days of work, the sentiment that resonated with her was being a resource for other mothers. With the age of her children, she moved as they moved. She was finding ways to incorporate them within her birth work and being creative within the many facets of supporting families on their parenthood journeys. Divine started her nonprofit - community birth companion, becoming a doula, certified lactation counselor, and now with her children being older working towards becoming a midwife. It was essential for her that on her journey, she also honored her children's childhood.Being a foundation of support rooted in the Southern Tradition of healing is etched throughout Divine's family. Her 6-week in-person and online workshop Grandma's Hands Pregnancy and Postpartum Herbs & Nutrition in the Southern Tradition is a reflection of that. It is an ethnobotany course based in the folk, historical healing traditions of the South and particularly Black Southern Midwives. A modality of healing that focused on how we feel about sickness, where do we think it comes from, and focused on healing the whole person.Divine's support and teachings are intended to be a reminder to the community - a reminder that we have the tools for our healing.
