Episode 328: On June 30, 2009, the serene waters of the Rideau Canal in Kingston, Ontario, revealed a dark and tragic secret. A submerged car discovered that day contained the bodies of three teenage sisters—Zainab (19), Sahar (17), and Geeti (13) Shafia—along with their father's first wife, Rona Muhammad Amir (52). What initially appeared to be a tragic accident soon unravelled into a chilling tale of premeditated murder. The perpetrators, Mohammad Shafia, his second wife, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, and their son, Hamed, were arrested on July 23, 2009, and later convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Shockingly, the victims were Mohammad Shafia's daughters and his first wife. This heinous act, driven by twisted notions of family honour, shocked the nation and highlighted the grim reality of honour-based violence. Join us as we delve into the harrowing details of the Shafia family murders, a case that not only captivated Canada but also sparked crucial conversations about domestic violence and the challenges faced by immigrant families in preserving their cultural values while integrating into a new society. Imagine you're on a roadtrip with your family. Your father's driving well below the speed limit, stickler for the law that he is; your mum's insisting you eat the food she brought from home instead of the McDonald's drive-thru meal; your younger sibling's belligerently asking how far you have left to go. You're tuned into your headset, staring into the horizon, when suddenly the landscape changes. You're underwater. Your car is drowning, and you and your family are drowning along with it. This is what one Afghan family went through in Canada back in 2009. What seemed to be a tragedy soon betrayed inklings of a sinister plot. Was this an accident, or was it just made to look like one? This is the story of the Shafia Family Murders.

In this episode, I speak with Shafia about her path to becoming a health and sex educator. She discussed how she had worked in case management and social work with kids who were experiencing dual and triple diagnosis, and a common theme was having a history of being harmed. She decided she wanted to try to help increase the prevention of such harm, and was fortunate enough to work at a great school, Marin Academy, where they allowed her the resources to create an in depth class where she could help the kids process the foundational concepts related to relationships, being respect, dignity, safety and pleasure. After 25 years of teaching in many schools, Shafia wrote a book: Sex, Teens, and Everything in Between. We discussed her book, which is written to help parents and teens have conversations about consent, sex, their rights, and many other topics. We discussed her use of Emily Nagoski's metaphor of the garden and deciding what to leave, what to take out, and who we're going to let in to our sexual guardian, and the beliefs and feelings we have about sexuality and how we connect with others. She also shared a conversation she has with the students about how they would feel if the sat down with some French fries and everyone started grabbing them. This leads into conversations about consent, power, respect, and a whole host of other concepts. She also shared that it is very important for parents, as well as therapists, to think of their own relationship to sexuality, body image, relationships, gender, sexual orientation because these will influence how we respond in guiding teens. Shafia Zaloom is a health educator, parent, consultant and author whose work centers on human development, community building, ethics, and social justice. Her approach involves creating opportunities for students and teachers to discuss the complexities of teen culture and decision-making with straight-forward, open and honest dialogue. Shafia has worked with thousands of children and their families in her role as teacher, coach, administrator, board member, and outdoor educator. She has contributed articles to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and numerous parenting blogs. Shafia's book, Sex, Teens and Everything in Between has been reviewed as “the ultimate relationship guide for teens of all orientations and identities.” It is one that “every teen, and every parent and educator - and every other adult who interacts with teens - should read.” Shafia is currently the health teacher at the Urban School in San Francisco, and develops curricula and trainings for schools across the country. She was honored by the San Francisco Giants Foundation in 2018 for her work with Aim High, a program that expands opportunities for students and their teachers through tuition-free summer learning enrichment, and was recently granted CAHPERD's Health Teacher of the Year Award for 2021. Her work has been featured by many media outlets including, The New York Times, USA Today, NPR, KQED, and PBS.

Sex and teens. The topic can be super uncomfortable, overwhelming, and even scary to both parents and adolescents. If you're a parent or a guardian of a teen, this episode is a must. So much has changed on the sexual landscape. There's porn, hookup culture, social media, and so many other influencing factors. How do you talk to your adolescent to keep them safe and making good decisions? What do they need to know? What do you need to know? Fortunately, here to answer these questions and so many more, is one of the top experts in the world, and a woman who has my utmost respect. Shafia Zaloom (www.shafiazaloom.com) is the author of Sex, Teens, & Everything in Between. I loved this book as did my wonderful psychologist wife, and we are not alone. The creators of the hit Netflix series, Big Mouth, Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, do their best to make the show hilarious, but they also consult with Shafia to make the show accurate and instructive. They've said that her book, “perfectly encapsulates her mission at the cutting edge of sex education: teaching adolescents how to become people of integrity with regard to sex and relationships.” So. listen in as Shafia and I have a candid and highly informative discussion about teens and sex.

On today's episode of THE FOOD SEEN, Louisa Shafia grew up Persian in 1970's Philadelphia. Her father was Iranian; pomegranates, pistachios, and saffron were aplenty in their household. It wasn't until working as a chef in San Francisco, that Louisa awoke the flavors of her heritage, recreating her version of “fesenjan” a sweet-and-sour stew accented with pomegranate molasses and ground walnuts. Impassioned by her family's past, she returned to Iran, did R&D in Los Angeles (the largest community of Iranian expats), and wrote “The New Persian Kitchen”. Still, Louisa wanted to further share her cuisine, opening a pop-up called Lakh Lakh at NYC's Porsena restaurant, serving such dishes as Sabzi Kordan (herb and cheese plate with barbari bread), Sambuseh (a crispy phyllo triangle stuffed with veggies, lentils, nigella seeds, served with a spicy tomato relish), Jujeh Kebab (chicken kebab in a saffron marinade), and Bastani Nooni (saffron ice cream sandwiches with cardamom wafers). Politics aside, this may mark the start of a new Iranian food revolution. This program was brought to you by S. Wallace Edwards & Sons. Photo by Sara Remington “Sometimes my relatives from Iran would visit, it was always mind blowing…We would just sit around and enjoy life.” [8:15] “We talk about local and seasonal here, there you don't even have to try, its just how people live. [In Iranian Bazaars]” [12:00] –Louisa Shafia on The Food Seen
