Sacred Window Podcast: Nurturing Awareness in Postpartum Care
We speak often about rest in the postpartum period. But rarely do we ask who is holding that rest—and at what cost.In this episode, I reflect on the deeper layers of postpartum care and caregiving through the lens of Ayurveda and lived experience. We explore why so many caregivers, doulas, and mothers find themselves depleted even as they are offering support, and what it might mean to rethink the very model of care we've inherited. This conversation is an invitation to slow down and look beneath the surface. To consider postpartum healing not as a six- or twelve-week timeline, but as a process that unfolds in the body, the nervous system, and the subtle layers of integration that take time and presence.I share from my own experience of preparing deeply for birth, yet arriving in the postpartum window without the knowledge or support I needed to heal with ease. From there, we explore what makes Ayurvedic postpartum care different—why digestion, nourishment, and rest are not small details, but foundations of healing. This episode is also for the caregivers. For those of us navigating many kinds of transitions—motherhood, menopause, grief, change, or reorientation—and wondering how to offer care without losing ourselves in the process. We speak about rest as an active principle, about reciprocity in caregiving, and about building practices and lives that are both meaningful and sustainable. This is not a conversation about doing more.It is about listening more closely to what the body, the work, and this season of life are asking of us.If you feel the quiet knowing that care can be different—slower, more grounded, more reciprocal—you are not alone. Are you feeling the call to know more about Conscious Postpartum Care?Reach out! The mother needs care too, not just the baby.In this episode, Brittany Starobin, founder of Haven Postnatal Retreat, discusses how her own battle with postpartum depression, including suicidal thoughts, led her to create a space that prioritizes mothers' recovery during the “fourth trimester.” She explores the U.S. maternal health crisis, particularly its disproportionate impact on Black and Brown women, and how systemic inequities, lack of support, and cultural stigma contribute to worsening outcomes. Brittany explains how Haven combines trauma-informed care with data-driven practices, monitoring vital signs like blood pressure to detect postpartum preeclampsia early, and integrates mental health screenings, therapy, journaling, and partner education. The retreat offers both luxury and purpose: creating a model to prove that comprehensive postpartum care improves outcomes and deserves broader access. She also highlights the importance of supporting fathers, fostering community among mothers, and educating families about recognizing mental health warning signs. This episode brings empathy and innovation together to reimagine maternal wellness as both a personal and public health priority.Tune in and learn how one woman's personal struggle turned into a mission to revolutionize postpartum care through compassion, technology, and community!ResourcesConnect with Brittany Starobin on LinkedIn here.Follow Haven Postnatal Retreat on LinkedIn here and visit their website.Learn more about Haven Postnatal Retreat on Instagram and TikTok.Email Haven Postnatal Retreat directly here.

Send us a textYour postpartum clients aren't just "busy"—they're breaking down. Here's the truth your assessments are missing: The invisible mental load is a chronic state of cognitive overload that's hijacking her body. This isn't a failure of willpower; it's a physiological response to chronic stress that causes everything from unexplained anxiety and low milk supply to pelvic pain and insomnia. Maranda reveals how this unacknowledged cognitive burden triggers the HPA axis, shuts down nervous system regulation, and creates a cascade of physical symptoms. Every postpartum provider—from lactation consultants to functional health experts—must recognize this root cause. An estimated 132 million babies were born across the globe last year — really just a drop in the bucket when you think about the over 100 billion babies born since modern humans first lived on Earth 200,000 years ago. And until very recently we had few tools to understand how they were doing in the womb, how they would fare in the days after birth, and how a pregnant person would change physically and mentally not just during pregnancy but in the months and years that followed. Things have changed dramatically, particularly over the last decade, in terms of the care and technology that's available preconception, during pregnancy, and post-birth. But there is still so much we don't know about these time periods, both for baby and mom, and many a black box remains. This week on the Modern Retail Podcast, reporter Julia Waldow joins co-host Melissa Daniels to unpack how brands are reacting to the shifting landscape of U.S. trade deals following the August 1 expiration deadline. They also dive into the backlash and cultural critiques around American Eagle's ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney. Later in the episode (21:30), Daniels sits down with Sarah O'Leary, CEO of femtech brand Willow Innovations, and Jen Saxton, founder of TotSquad, to talk about the rise of postpartum consumer products. The conversation covers why this category has been historically underserved, how retailers like Target are leaning in, and what needs to change to better support new moms in the CPG space. Note: The day after this podcast was taped, American Eagle issued the following statement about the campaign on its Instagram page: "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone."

Click here to send me a quick message :) So many focus on preparing for birth during pregnancy, as if the birth itself is the biggest event. And as someone who studied midwifery and attended births for 5 years, I can say confidently that it IS important to prepare for the birth. But it is arguably even MORE important to prepare for the initial weeks and months postpartum. And not just with meal trains and herbal remedies, but also - from the Ayurvedic lens - with deep replenishing postpartum care.Nourishing, warming, grounding, holding the mama or birthing parent. The body changes immensely after the babe is born. Just think, that entire baby and the placenta have been released from the womb. The womb involutes, contracting over the course of time to pre-pregnancy size. Today's guest, Ayurvedic postpartum care provider Coco Genevieve (AyurMama) has devoted her life to tending and nourishing mothers and birthing parents during the first 6 weeks postpartum, also referred to as the Sacred Window in Ayurveda. And she shares all about this time, the body changes, the qualities and energetics of both what's happening and what's needed to tend the imbalances, and some of her favorite key practices - namely, food! She even shares one of her favorite recipes at the end. Send us a text"Congratulations, you're both alive." This shockingly low bar for maternal healthcare success reveals everything wrong with how America treats new mothers. In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Venice Haynes, Senior Director of Research and Community Engagement at United States of Care, shares the urgent mission behind the groundbreaking 100 Weeks Project - an initiative transforming postpartum care by acknowledging that maternal health needs extend far beyond delivery.Dr. Haynes pulls back the curtain on America's maternal health crisis, sharing both data and personal stories that highlight the dangerous gap in care during the postpartum period. Most new mothers don't see a healthcare provider between delivery and their six-week checkup, despite the fact that over 60% of maternal deaths occur within the first seven days after birth. This negligence reflects a healthcare system that continues to treat new mothers as afterthoughts. The cultural expectation of "toxic independence" compounds this crisis. Mothers are expected to handle everything themselves, creating a dangerous reluctance to seek help even when warning signs appear. Meanwhile, essential postpartum services like lactation consulting, pelvic floor physical therapy, and mental health support remain categorized as luxuries rather than necessities, placing them out of reach for many families.Through the 100 Weeks Project, Dr. Haynes and her team are working to fundamentally reimagine maternal care by 2030. By advocating for expanded Medicaid coverage, better employer policies, improved data collection, and innovative care models, they aim to create a future where maternal health is truly valued - not just for the six weeks after delivery, but for the entire journey through parenthood. What would it look like if we treated mothers like they matter? Listen now to discover how we can transform maternal care from a bare-minimum survival scenario to a truly supportive experience for all.Learn more here: https://100weeks.unitedstatesofcare.org/p/1 Coaching offerKelly Hof: Labor Nurse + Birth CoachBasically, I'm your birth bestie!
