Topic: When Black women are the token minority in the workforce, we attempt to seek out other Black women co-workers within the office environment. We give the extra inner ‘black fist’ when she is in a higher, executive position. But what happens when that sense of pride and #blackgirlmagic turns to misery and dread the hands of said Black woman? Recently, a collective group of women, called #BlackFemaleAnonymous, wrote a piece in Medium entitled, “The Truth About Essence”, in which they discussed intimidation and possible retaliation upon the demand for resignation of CEO Richelieu Dennis, Michelle Ebanks, Joy Collins Profet, and Moana Luu. We will have the link of the article in our show notes, as well as Essences’ official statement on the criticism of the article. It does bring up an interesting discussion of working under black women in leadership positions. Many love the thought of working under the visual representation of themselves, while others...not so much. Let’s talk bullying is the worst, as an adult, when it’s buy us. Topic: The Brown Mama’s Mindset A little self-care is warranted during this time for our black mothers nationwide. Not self-care in terms of deflecting your feelings and concerns (or maybe that might be true, for the moment, as well), but maybe a sense of reflection of who you are and how you can move forward?? how to prioritize your time for thoughtful conversation in positive mobilization?...or maybe reflect on your personality as a black mother and the tribe you wish to exist in? Topic: Buy Black Data from the Small Business Administration indicates that just over 19 million businesses, or 70.9 percent of all U.S. businesses, are white-owned. Blacks own about 2.6 million businesses or 9.5 percent of all U.S. businesses, and Latinos own 3.3 million businesses or 12.2 percent of all American businesses. Obvious questions include: Why the disproportion is fund disbursement? Is buying black more important today than 70 years ago? Why? Why not? We’ll get into if and why buying black matters today. Topic: Have you ever heard of mindfulness meditation? We think it’s fitting to discuss this during these difficult times. According to Wikipedia, Mindfulness is the psychological process of purposely bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment without judgment, which one develops through the practice of meditation and through other training. Mindfulness meditation asks us to suspend judgment and unleash our natural curiosity about the workings of the mind, approaching our experience with warmth and kindness, to ourselves and others. (Source: mindful.org). The motherhood journey is a stressful one. While we can talk about wine socials as a source of dealing (or escapism),We can imagine others are seeking a different approach for stress management. Let’s explore this thought process of mindfulness meditation with our guest momologist, Alana Sutton Watkins. Guest Momologist: Alana Sutton Watkins is an entrepreneur (she started an African print curator apparel store), homeschool mom of 3, wife, and now blogger. Topic: There is a growing number of African-American women who have become pioneers in the country’s burgeoning cannabis industry. More and more black women are becoming marijuana entrepreneurs, creating dispensaries, launching CBD product lines and selling edible cannabis products and weed-themed merchandise (Source: NewsOne) However, we know that marijuana policies disportionaly affect black and brown communities. How do ‘budding entrepreneurs’ of color gain traction and notably recognition when the odds are against us. Let’s discuss this with our guest momologist, Whitney Beatty, CEO of The Apothecarry Brands, INC. Guest Momologist: Whitney Beatty, CEO of The Apothecarry Brands, INC. Apothecarry Brands CEO Whitney Beatty is a successful entertainment industry executive turned cannabis storage designer that’s spearheading her quickly growing start-up. After meeting so many like minded cannabis users, who lamented about a lack of good storage system, worried about securing buds away from kids and pets and who were tired of searching around for their stash to discover it dried out from plastic baggies and non-airtight dispensary jars, Apothecarry was born. The brand seeks to redefining the image of cannabis users who take pride and pleasure in their stash, while filling a hole in the marijuana paraphernalia market for everyone from the attorneys who tokes after their high powered workday, to the “stiletto stoners” who are hosting ladies night, to the seniors using medication for health benefits and everyone in between who demands the best in all things. Topic: Menopause affects all women regardless of race or socioeconomic background. However, recent studies have shown that the experience of menopause is different among different racial groups. African Americans have more estrogen related symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, urine leakage) than all the other ethnic groups. Additionally, African Americans are less likely to have somatic symptoms (headaches, difficulty sleeping, racing heart, stiffness and soreness in joints) than all other ethnic groups. Unfortunately, when it comes time for menopause, you're also likely to have more intense symptoms than your white peers. We will talk, in-depth of the change of life with our guest Momologist, Dr. Tiffany Woodus References: https://news.yale.edu/2005/04/26/menopause-and-african-american-women https://www.verywellhealth.com/menopause-worse-for-african-american-women-3522485 https://sacobserver.com/2015/02/black-women-endure-menopause-longest/ http://www.blackwomenshealthproject.org/aamenopause.htm Merch Merch! Topic: Rashida Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, and most recent Tiffany Haddish are some of the notable African American Jewish celebrities. We can theorize that their celebrity status makes the transition easier to acclimate than non celebrities. We will discuss the path of being a Black Jewish mom in society with out guest momologist, Aviva Brown. Guest Momologist: Aviva Brown and her children converted to Judaism in 2017, but during the preceding years of Jewish study, she noticed a lack of racial diversity among Jewish children’s literature. In late 2018, Aviva read a quote by author Beverly Cleary: If you don’t see the book you want on the shelf, write it. She’s been named North Carolina’s Mother of the Year 2020 by American Mothers, Inc.! Aviva currently lives in North Carolina with her husband, two cats, and four wild animals who sometimes pretend they’re well-mannered children. When she’s not writing, editing, or reading diverse children’s books, she can be found hiding from housework (no one’s actually ever found her; she’s super good at hiding), eating popcorn, or singing show tunes. What do we have to do to get better, more confident at obtaining financial freedom? What does your financial snapshot look like in 2020? As some may have lived behind the philosophy of “what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is yours”, does it bring a successful financial plan for our partners? What if you were brought up differently? Season 3, Episode 1: Food Desert Solutions Food deserts tend to be more populated by low-income residents, who are not as attractive a market for large supermarkets, and have reduced mobility. Food deserts lack suppliers of fresh protein sources such as poultry, fish and meat, along with fresh fruit and vegetables, instead, relying on convenience stores, which provide processed and sugar- and fat-laden foods, which are known contributors to the United States' obesity epidemic. We are discussing the gap to accessible health food options within our community with our guest Momologist Teasha Fridia. Guest Momologist: Teasha Fridia is the co-owner and co-founder of The Mini Farmers Market, Inc. The Mini Farmers Market has been working collectively in our community for the past 13 years encouraging community members to pool their resources; allowing produce to be purchased bulk and brought back to our neighborhoods which are known food deserts. Topic: Teaching your child justice while you fight injustice Recent news once again is showing the challenges of living in America. #BlackLivesMatter. The untimely deaths of Bothan Jean and Atatiana Jefferson, both in their 20’s & both killed by police officers, has sparked outrage in the investigation process when its one of their own. As black parents, we’ve felt that conversations about race and race relations occur far too young for the mind to even process….or so do adults think. How do we, as black adults, not only teach these lessons to our children, when we struggle with our own challenges with the justice system? Topic: Living Your Authentic Self Financially Can we talk finances and money management?!? As a mom, I always feel like I’m ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. This becomes a bit challenging as a budding entrepreneur. The constant shift our finances may leave one to wonder if this entrepreneur journey is right for them. Only one in 10 African Americans work with a financial professional compared with one in four white Americans, according to the 2015-2016 African American Financial Experience Prudential report said. I get it-- we don’t want everybody to know our financial business. It leaves us open and vulnerable to criticism in how we should be handing our life….not that we should be having that line of thinking. With such a taboo topic (especially in the African American community), we will discuss the factors contributing to the lack of financial confidence in daily living and our small business, with Dorinda Walker. About Dorinda Walker: Dorinda Walker is an acclaimed author of the book “Protected by Purpose”, an award-winning multicultural marketer and CEO of Dorinda Walker Cultural Solutions Group, a marketing consultancy that provides strategic insights and solutions for brands to engage diverse consumers. Having served 20 years in the financial services industry, Walker has dedicated her career to advancing gender, racial and financial equity among underserved consumers. Walker is a highly accomplished innovative leader with outstanding results in marketing and community engagement. She’s a demonstrated change agent who has generated a combined $100M+ in life insurance and annuities revenue be leading campaigns and community engagement initiatives that have enhanced brand affinity among women and diverse markets. She has received several distinguished honors and awards for her marketing, community and corporate service. Most recently in 2018 named a one of the 25 African American Leaders making a difference in New Jersey, one of New Jersey’s Leading Women Intrapreneurs, recipient of the Marc E. Berson Community Award. Questions for Dorinda: What are 2 financial products and services a mom and a mompreneur needs to incorporate into their business plan right now? Why and what is the impact? What are the cost ranges? In your interview with Essence you mention the biggest mistake black women make with money is we do not talk about finances. Can you expand upon why this is a big mistake we make? Is the mistake when we talk to girlfriends? significant others? ourselves? Women are less likely to have the confidence to invest in the stock market, do you find this true? Let’s expand on that. What do you suggest moms do today to carry on their financial legacy and break general curses? Talk to us about the book! How can it be useful in our daily life? You mentioned in your recent blog post "Marketers may want to consider developing their womens' marketing strategy by leading with the cultural insights of Black women." What specifically can these mompreneurs do to develop a strategy that showcases and appeal to engage ourselves? What is the perception about marketing black women-centered small developers/owners that misses the mark? What advice do you have for our future generations re: preserving a legacy? Who is Dorinda at home? Do you grocery shop? What is your downtime like? Congrats on 26 years of Black Love! When things get tough what steps or what have you down to re-center the marriage back on track? Topic: Black hair and hair culture has been a form of political activism for centuries. When black women were forced to cover our heads, we wore beautiful headwraps, highlighting our beauty. But penalized for the creativity and originality. To the 1960’s, when certain types of hairstyles were pictured equivalent to resistance. The advertising presence shifted in the late 1960’s- 1990’s, emphasizing black hair care be relaxed. Black women once again are resisting the traditional relaxed look, to its natural and cultural representation of curly/kinky hair and braids/cornrows. The US government isn’t too keen of black women being autonomous of our hair and bodies--some can make the argument about this overseas too. Schools and the military have placed discriminatory hair policies, due to lack of understanding (and cultural insensitivity) to black/brown individuals. The battle between our autonomy and black hair care remains. We will discuss the most recent piece of legislation, called the C.R.O.W.N act, which was created in support of banning these hair policies. How does this act translate to us as success in the workforce? What are we teaching our daughters about their hair? And what are teaching our sons as acceptable beauty? Mahogany Mom of the Week: Our Mahogany Mom of the week is Karen Griffin. Karen constantly teaches the community about the history of jazz at the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City. Her daughter says she worked full time and took care of two girls as a single mom. Karen, as her daughter praises "Is an angel, loving, giving, and God-fearing". Season 2 | Episode 21: Midwifery Every August, U.S. Breastfeeding Committee marks this as National Breastfeeding Month. The World Health Organization (W.H.O) encourages breastfeeding for at least 6 months, with numerous benefits to the growth and development of you child. Specifically, in the last week of August, black mothers celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week. Why do back moms need a week to celebrate aside from the masses, you ask? Black Breastfeeding Week was created because for over 40 years there has been a gaping racial disparity in breastfeeding rates. The most recent CDC data show that 75% of white women have ever breastfed versus 58.9% of black women. The fact that racial disparity in initiation and even bigger one for duration has lingered for so long is reason enough to take 7 days to focus on the issue. We will dive into these factors with our guest Momologist, LaQuita Brazile. Mahogany Mom of the Week: Kim Coombs is a mom of 3 girls homeschools and is a full time real estate agent. As moms, we strive to create a ‘mom village’, that supportive community of neighbors and friends to occasional cry with, vent, and assist with children when you're in a pinch....We ask, need and yearn for it, with arms wide open. Sometimes, the arms feel heavy from waiting so long, and so we retreat. Maybe, it’s too abundant that we treat because it’s too much to sort out (maybe?). It takes a village to raise a child, and it cannot be done alone. That moment of vulnerability ...Is it me? Am I stuck up? Am I too proud? Am I not a village to others but yet, desire my own? More questions than answers to sort and process. What does your village look like? Do we have high expectations for them? Mahogany Mom of the Week: Tremain Alisa Mishoe.
