Walk into any grocery store, and it's natural to assume that most of the products being sold on shelves around us would be free from animal-based ingredients – such as cookies, soups, canned beans, noodles and breads. These are not in the refrigerated meats section and don't seem to be made with fish, beef, pork, or poultry, so they're obviously vegan or 100% plant-based, right? Wrong. Manufacturers can turn animal-based fats and proteins into many forms, so many commercially processed food products can contain animal-derived ingredients. And it's often without us realizing it, UNLESS we know where and what to look for. That's why I wanted to do this episode. I'll give you top tips that'll help you spot meat and fish-based ingredients used in commercial food products more quickly. You'll then be able to make smarter shopping decisions and move with more confidence towards a plant-powered lifestyle. Are you ready to do this? Then let's jump in! Our daily choices can have a huge influence on the way we experience and redefine midlife. Today's guest, Megan Martin, is a university qualified nutritionist who is passionate about supporting women during the menopausal transition by reframing self care so that they can future proof their health and approach a non-diet approach to their health and wellness. She is a wealth of knowledge and understands the importance of supporting our bodies more mindfully during these transition years. Listen as Megan and I expand on our thoughts and talk about: The difference between dietitians and nutritionists, keeping it simple and how nutrition also includes lifestyle choices and a wholesome well rounded approach. The physiological impact of diet culture and social influences within our past, such as counting calories, fad diets and the bombardment of food messages we were exposed to. Food choices in regard to specific nutrients, perimenopause and menopause. Looking at the Mediterranean diet for this stage of life and how that can minimise inflammatory issues and decrease other risks such as osteopenia. How the body absorbs certain nutrients such as calcium, iron and vitamin D and importance of estrogen levels in midlife. Megan's passion and enthusiasm for nutrition shines throughout this conversation and I hope it gets you thinking about differences you can make through putting things in place and becoming an advocate for your own health and well-being. Pre-eclampsia impacts more than 5% of pregnancies, is a leading cause of pre-term birth and is increasingly on the rise. When it comes to this difficult diagnosis, we often are told there is nothing we can do other than give birth, usually by induction, sometimes by cesarean. While the etiology of pre-eclampsia is not fully understood and much more research needs to be done, we do know that diet and nutrition play a key role in the development of and/or severity of pre-eclampsia. Lily Nichols, expert nutritionist and author, returns to explain the critical nutrient deficiencies that are associated with this illness and illuminates the newest research pointing to male sperm as a potential player in the development of pre-eclampsia. If you are wondering if there is anything you can do to prevent or slow the development of pre-eclampsia, then this episode will guide you on how to do just that. In this episode, I'm about to get VOCAL (in case you haven't heard me in the past) See I have people attack me ALL THE TIME telling me I promote obesity because I am so against DIETS! YES, I'm against the BULLSHIT behind the diets and the UNHEALTHY shit they promote and I will not sit down about that. With that being said...I am NOT against weight loss. So I'll be filling you in on what the heck that means because they can CO-EXIST!! Diet culture sucks and it had my life turned upside down as it has for many of my clients. The quick fix diets, the ones promoted by “health coaches”, the fat burners, the magic meal replacement shakes…that's just the tip of the iceberg. Let's face it, the diet industry is a flawed system ( because IF they did work, we wouldn't always be looking for the next diet) of toxic beliefs THIS, THIS RIGHT HERE is what I'm against! The diet industry does the following and it makes me want to puke…BUT instead, I'll take a stand and expose the truth behind what they are brainwashing us to believe and ACCEPT!! The diet industry does the following and it's time you know: Worships thinness and equates it to health and moral virtue, which means you can spend your whole life thinking you're flawed or broken just because you don't look like the impossibly thin “ideal” Promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, which means you feel compelled to spend a massive amount of time, energy, and money trying to shrink your body, even though the research is very clear that almost no one can sustain intentional weight loss for more than a few years. Turns food into “GOOD and “BAD” categories, which means you're forced to be hyper-obsessed about your eating, ashamed of your food choices, and distracted from your pleasure, your purpose, and your power; So, YES, I am against the diet culture but that doesn't mean I am against weight loss or that I am anti-health. Health comes in many different sizes and shapes!! It's important to remember that we all have different needs. There is no ONE way to be healthy and the path to health will look different for each of us. My question for you would be: do you know what healthy looks like for YOU? Or do you feel overwhelmed and confused by all of the conflicting information out there? We know that many diseases are caused by factors such as lifestyle and diet. Unfortunately, the current medical system often offers prescriptions to treat the conditions we are diagnosed with rather than encouraging prophylactic approaches. While this may help to some degree, many nutritionists are more interested in finding ways to prevent diseases that arise from these circumstances altogether, seeking to eliminate the problem before it arises. David Getoff is the author of Abundant Health in a Toxic World, a book that explores methods of reducing or eradicating causes of human disease through nutrition-based lifestyle changes. As a certified clinical nutritionist and traditional naturopath, David Getoff is internationally recognized as an expert in diet, nutrition, and detoxification treatments, and he uses this knowledge to educate the public with his research. Listen now to find out: The role of detoxification in the upkeep of human wellness. How contracting acute myeloid leukemia has impacted David Getoff's own health practice. How clinical nutrition is being used to treat a variety of conditions. Can you prevent disease by taking a different approach to your own lifestyle? Find out now in this investigative and informative episode! To learn more about David Getoff and his work, visit naturopath4you.com Episode also available on Apple Podcast: http://apple.co/30PvU9C
Does this sound familiar: You painstakingly prepare a delicious, balanced dinner. Next, you curate the food on plates in a way that definitely highlights your attention to detail. Then, finally, you set the culinary masterpiece in front of your kids to a chorus of moans and gags. Instead of a “looks delicious!” you get an “ew gross!"... Heartbreaking, right? Thankfully, there are dads like Joel Feren, accredited Nutritionist and Dietician, who are willing to drop some mealtime wisdom while commiserating right along with us. Joel—known as “The Nutrition Guy”—talks with Adam and Marc about encouraging healthy food choices and what works with his own two-year-old daughter, Ruby. After the interview, test your knowledge of 90s cereal mascots!Episode 61 of Modern Dadhood opens with a rather long, disgusting, and frankly uncalled for belch from Marc. The guys discuss their relationships with food, the eating habits of their families when they were growing up, and how they try to instill positive eating habits and food choices in their kids. The guys welcome Joel Feren into the conversation. Joel shares about diet and nutrition both from the perspective of an accredited nutritionist and dietician, and as a father of a two-year-old daughter. Joel shares colorful, fun, colorful, (and sometimes mouthwatering) photos on his Instagram channel "The Nutrition Guy" which feature some of his favorite recipes and demonstrate how he invites Ruby to participate in food preparation. The conversation covers topics such as:• When is snacking appropriate and when is it a problem?• Are regimented "mealtimes" important?• The concept of "Your body knows best"• How to incorporate your kids into the meal planning process• The benefits of involving your kids in cooking/food prep• What "safe foods" are• Techniques for introducing your kids to new foods• The best language to use when discussing "good foods" vs "bad foods"• How to handle food and meal prep when you have a newborn• And more!Post-interview, Marc surprises Adam with a round of "90s Cereal Mascot Trivia."
