What can I say? We just kept talking after the Silver Blaze discussion on the May 6, 2024 episode. So if you really just want to hear bull pups Mooch, Maddie, Starlight, and Calder chatting about random Sherlockian things, including THAT movie, here you go.
There's a whole lot of horse race talk in this week's episode as four Americans try to wrap their heads around a more fully realized adaptation of “Silver Blaze” at the Grand Nationals. If you'd like to see just the sort of race Silver Blaze would have run in, here's a link that our guest bull pup: https://youtu.be/8q6ewCO4tB4?si=u6nTLvnQPiaKON9T
OFF TO THE RACES - the case was finally coming together. Sherlock had narrowed down on a motive and the suspects could only be a chosen few from the stable. We headed to the local police station to speak to Fitzroy Simpson. And after that, well, Sherlock kind of took over. Part 4 of 4. Talk of the John H. Watson Society journal, a Watson we don't care much for, Watson having three of something instead of two, and the third part of Silver Blaze's latest modern adaptation is reviewed. And we might all still be recovering from a certain con.
THE CURIOUS INCIDENT - I couldn't help feel that we had conjured up more questions than we had actually answered. And worse than that we'd put both our lives in great danger.. and pissed off the locals a little bit too. We needed something that would turn the case on its head and put us back in the game. That's exactly what we found. Part 3 of 4. Buckle up for a full hour of bull pup chatter, ranging from a new waffle based Sherlockian society, through artists we saw at 221B Con, to the usual goings on about the second part of "Silver Blaze" from Sherlock & Co. The game is afoot . . . well unless you're reading bull pup Buck's copy of A Study in Scarlet. You'll see.
IF THE SHOE FITZ. My companion and I traversed the windy Moors in search of the missing Silver Blaze. That was our second port of call. Our first was to see Inspector Gregory.. and most importantly, the corpse of the late June Straker... But that only left more questions. Part 2 of 4. MISSING LIKE A RACEHORSE - at times it felt like not just Britain but the entire planet was gripped by this saga. Every aspect of it was shrouded in tantalising intrigue. It began as many national captivations do... with murder. Sherlock and I headed to Dartmoor to have a crack at solving it and to begin our search for Silver Blaze. Part 1 of 4. 1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories & The Best of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle was asked by the Strand Magazine to come up with his 12 favorite Sherlock Holmes adventures as part of a contest held by Stand Magazine in which the readers were asked to list their 12 favorites and the person closest ton Doyle's picks would win an autographed copy of the still-to-be-released 'Casebook of Sherlock Holmes'. That final book contained another group of great Holmes adventures, prompting another journalist to ask Doyle for some additional favorites. ACD added another 7, giving us 19. we begin with The Adventure of Silver Blaze, which didn't make the top 12 because Doyle had been challenged by a reader who believed his theory of the bicycle was "off track"- and it was. But Doyle really was proud of that story and placed in as his #13th favorite. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The first chapter can make or break a reader's engagement with a story. We as writers must craft brilliant opening pages in order to hook those picky readers, so let's study the stories of others to see how they do it! I do so love a good Holmesian tale! As a young child, I devoured Doyle's original stories just like my father did. We enjoyed collecting stories written by other writers as well, who took Holmes to places like Paris and the American Midwest. So trying Robert J. Harris' series with Holmes living in WWII was a no-brainer to me. I've watched Basil Rathbone play Holmes tackling the Nazis, after all! This particular installment is The Devil's Blaze, which struck me as a combination of Doyle's titles "The Silver Blaze" and "The Devil's Foot." The first chapter may feel a little slow to those who've not read much Holmes, but Harris clearly shows he understands the narrative voice of Dr. John Watson as he engages with a bored Sherlock Holmes before a client arrives with a strange tale. The client must, of course, share his life story (they all do in Doyle's stories), but even in that info dump I found myself chuckling at the red flags Doyle so often included in his cases that show signs of nefarious activity afoot. For those who enjoy watching Sherlock at work, or for those who love a period mystery, I'm sure Harris' The Devil's Foot will fit scratch that itch. And what will you learn from these opening pages? Let's find out! Cheers!

This time, Rachael and Ansel are joined by Mick Sharpe to discuss The Adventure of Silver Blaze, a story that's shockingly not as racist as it could have been.Topics include incorrect places to keep hobby knives, dog-inflicted injuries, and mysteriously disappearing wind. Arthur Conan Doyle (ACD) write 56 Sherlock Ho0lmes adventures. Afterwards, when asked which were his favorites- he listed 12, then later listed another 7. Silver Blaze by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle audiobook. A famous race horse disappears a week before an important race; the trainer is found dead on the desolate moor and the police are completely baffled. Naturally the owner and the police turn to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to help unravel the tangled threads of this mystery. Which he does in his usual imaginative and yet logical way. I think this is one of the best Sherlock stories by Doyle. We are given the clues and yet cannot see them until Sherlock slowly puts them together. Very enjoyable. Learn more about your ad choices. Rory Sutherland is a British advertising executive who became fascinated with behavioral science. Between his TED talks, books and articles, he has become one of the field's greatest proponents. Rory is currently the Executive Creative Director of OgilvyOne, after gigs as vice-chairman of Ogilvy Group UK and co-founder of the Behavioural Sciences Practice, part of the Ogilvy & Mather group of companies. He is the author of The Spectator's The Wiki Man column and his most recent book, which we highly recommend, is Alchemy: The Dark Art and Curious Science of Creating Magic in Brands, Business, and Life. Our discussion with Rory was original published in January 2020, but Rory's evergreen insights continue to be popular with our listeners so we decided to republish this episode. You can also listen to Rory discuss his latest book Transport for Humans: Are We Nearly There Yet? alongside his co-writer Pete Dyson, in episode 290. We start this discussion with Rory by asking him about his book and some of his insights from it. His approach to advertising, marketing and product design is informed by his ability to look for the things that aren't there. He once described a solution to improving customer satisfaction on the Chunnel Train between London and Paris by suggesting that a billion dollars would be better spent on supermodel hosts in the cars than on reducing ride time by 15 minutes. He's a terrifically insightful thinker. Our conversation ran amok down all sorts of rabbit holes, as expected, including ergodicity, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's “The Silver Blaze,” high-end audio and the dietary habits of the world-famous runner, Usain Bolt. In Kurt and Tim's Grooving Session, we discuss some of our favorite takeaways from Rory's conversation including, “The Opposite of a Good Idea is a Good Idea” and others. And finally, Kurt teed up the Bonus Track with a final reflection and recap of the key points we discussed. As always, we would be grateful if you would write us a quick review. It helps us get noticed by other folks who are interested in podcasts about behavioral science. It will only take 27 seconds.
