This is our unabridged episode with Heather Holleman. How important is it to be a good conversationalist? In an age of widespread loneliness, close relationships are at a premium, and it's harder than ever to find common ground, even with those we spend time with on a daily basis. According to Heather Holleman, this is due in part to the fact that we have lost the ability to have what she calls “good conversations.” “Good conversations create personal closeness,” she says. “When you have good conversations, it could intervene in the loneliness epidemic.” In this episode, she discusses her book “The Six Conversations: Pathways to Connecting in an Age of Isolation and Inactivity,” in which she offers loads of practical tips for becoming better listeners, talkers, question askers, and ultimately, human beings. Heather Holleman, author of "The Six Conversations: Pathways for Connecting in a World of Incivility and Isolation", joins Terry and Alan for a fantastic equipping conversation that will help you connect with people, love people, and make sharing Jesus a more normal part of your relationships.
Conversations are a crucial life skill. They are literally the way in which we communicate with one another, relate to each other, and feel seen, valued, and heard. It's something we start practicing as soon as we begin to talk. Even so, we struggle to be able to have deep, meaningful conversations with others; especially with strangers. But what could happen if we were able to change that? What could we learn from each other if we were able to learn to listen well and communicate well with people? As it turns out, Dr. Heather Holleman has discovered that there are six primary topics that we, as humans, prefer to converse about. This week, she joins John to discuss her new book The Six Conversations: Pathways to Connecting in an Age of Isolation and Incivility. Today they talk through the four mindsets, the three fresh goals, and the six types of conversations that you can use to build deep, warm relationships both with your mentees and with any other person you encounter.Connect with Dr. Holleman:https://heatherholleman.com/Purchase The Six Conversations: The Six ConversationsPurchase This Seat's Saved: This Seat's Saved Purchase the You Can Mentor book:You Can Mentor: How to Impact Your Community, Fulfill the Great Commission, and Break Generational Cursesyoucanmentor.com

As a girl Heather Holleman was a complainer, a gossiper, used foul language, couldn’t connect with anybody. But now as an Associate Teaching Professor of English at Penn State, she’s leading colleagues and students into the love of Jesus. The difference is Jesus but it has also been the hard work of learning how to connect at a deep heart level in all her relationships. And Heather captures all her lessons learned in her new book, The Six Conversations: Pathways to Connecting in an Age of Isolation & Incivility. First, Heather’s life-giving connection with an Uber driver. Then, the moment God awakened Heather from her slumber of self-absorption. Next, in our cancel culture of anger, depression, anxiety, and unforgiveness, what we long for most is warm connections with fellow human beings! Then, Heather’s atheist colleague who loves hearing about Jesus and so many of her students who come to her asking why she loves and believes in Jesus. Next, believing the best in others. Then, how to have conversations with people who are really uncomfortable opening up. Then, 3 questions our culture desperately needs right now. Last, if you’re afraid of deep conversation or you just feel you’re not conversation gifted, you can learn. Really!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
