I'm thrilled to have back on the podcast my client Tammy Lally, TEDx speaker, author, and money coach, whose talk has reached millions of people around the world. But what makes her story so powerful isn't just the visibility; it's the vulnerability behind it.Tammy shares what really went into creating her TEDx talk, the emotional aftermath of sharing such a personal story, and how that one talk didn't just impact audiences. It transformed her life and business in ways she never expected. We also dive into why honesty, not perfection, is what truly connects with audiences, how shame shows up in our relationship with money, and why your story might be the exact thing someone else needs to hear.If you've ever felt the pull to share more of your story but hesitated, this conversation will give you a new way to think about what's possible on the other side of that courage.Tammy and I talk about:What made her TEDx talk resonate with millions and the deeper reason it spreadThe “vulnerability hangover” and why it's a normal part of sharing your storyHow telling the truth (not impressing people) creates real connectionWhy your past struggles don't disqualify you - they make you relatableThe surprising ways speaking can transform you, not just your audienceWhat she's learned about speaking fees and why women need to stop underpricing themselvesHow shame around money impacts individuals, families, and even entire generationsWhy now is the time to share your story and how to know if you're readyAbout My Guest: Tammy Lally is a published author, TED speaker, and Certified Money Coach (CMC). She helps others master their finances by first conquering their emotions around money, then by creating a comprehensive financial plan. She brings decades of experience and endless love to her bulletproof process for money mastery.About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. Resilience isn't something you build in the moment—it's something you build long before you need it.In this episode, I'm joined by one of my clients, Wendy Romeu, founder and CEO of Alluvionic, to talk about what happened when her business was suddenly put to the ultimate test. But this isn't just a conversation about leadership; it's about story.Wendy shares how she took a deeply personal and emotional experience and turned it into a powerful talk that resonates with audiences. We unpack how to know when you're ready to share a story, how much detail to include, and why the specifics—not just the summary—are what create real connection. We also talk about the internal shifts required to step into your voice: trusting that your story matters, allowing yourself to be seen, and delivering your message in a way that truly moves people. If you've been holding back from sharing a personal story—or wondering how to turn your experiences into thought leadership—this episode will show you what's possible.Wendy and I talk about:How to know when you're ready to share a personal story on stage or in your contentWhy the details of your story—not just the headline—are what create connection and impactHow to turn a real-life experience into a compelling, structured talkWhat it takes emotionally to share vulnerable stories with an audienceHow storytelling transforms your message from information into true thought leadershipLinks:Show notes at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/466/ Wendy's company's website: https://alluvionic.com/ Discover your Speaker Archetype by taking our free quiz at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/quiz/Work With Speaking Your Brand = https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/work-with-us/coaching/ Connect on LinkedIn:Carol Cox = https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolcoxWendy Romeu (guest) = https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendyromeu/ Related Podcast Episodes:Episode 464: Why Your Story Matters - Even When You Don't Feel Ready with Tiffany HawkEpisode 337: Sharing Your Story as a Catalyst for Transformation with Karen Keene Become Bookable Live Online Workshop - April 15, 2026If you want to speak more but you're not sure where to start or your efforts haven't produced the results you want, I'm hosting a live online workshop called “Become Bookable: How to Get Speaking Invitations” on Wednesday, April 15th.A lot of brilliant women assume they just need to pitch themselves more. Today, Jay sits down with cultural icon Hilary Duff for a raw and honest conversation about growth, identity, and the quiet courage it takes to evolve in public. Having grown up alongside an entire generation, Hilary reflects on what it means to return to music after more than a decade with her sixth studio album, Luck or Something. She opens up about shedding politeness in favor of truth, embracing maturity without losing the joy of her past, and finally feeling rooted in who she is, not just as an artist, but as a woman, a mother, a partner, and a daughter. Jay and Hilary explore the hidden weight of fame, the loss of anonymity at a young age, and the resilience required to stay grounded in an industry that constantly defines you before you can define yourself. Hilary speaks vulnerably about navigating eating disorders, divorce, co-parenting, estrangement with family, and the reality of loving people through complicated relationships. Through it all, she shares how motherhood reshaped her priorities, how love taught her to accept stability over chaos, and how creativity became a necessary way of reconnecting with herself. Hilary’s reflections reveal a powerful truth: what the world often calls luck is usually years of quiet strength, hard choices, and inner work. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Trust Your Intuition Over “Luck” How to Grow Without Rejecting Your Past How to Accept Healthy Love (Even When It Feels Unfamiliar) How to Break Family Patterns Without Losing Compassion How to Balance Motherhood and Personal Ambition How to Hold Joy and Pain at the Same Time How to Reinvent Yourself Without Losing Who You Are You are allowed to choose steadiness over chaos, truth over politeness, and peace over performance. Growth isn’t always loud, sometimes it’s simply deciding you don’t want to repeat the same pattern again. Have you ever heard a speaker share a story and have one of these reactions:#1: Wow, I really feel connected to what this person is saying. I have a new perspective on my own situation.-OR-#2: Why is this person telling this story? I don't get how this relates to the rest of their content or why I should care or this feels icky. You don't want to end up being the speaker where the people in the audience are having the second reaction. You want your stories to have purpose and meaning and be of service to your audience. This conversation came directly from questions we hear all the time from women in our Thought Leader Academy:Is sharing my personal story self-indulgent?How vulnerable is too vulnerable? Can storytelling cross the line into manipulation? The short answer? Yes, it can. And that's exactly why how you tell your story matters just as much as what you share. In this episode, Diane Diaz and I dig into:What makes a story feel authentic vs. forced or manipulativeWhy stories should always be in service of the audience, not the speakerCommon storytelling mistakes (TMI, rags-to-riches formulas, shaming language, and oversmoothing the edges)How vulnerability builds trust - when it's grounded in reflection and purposeWhy imperfect stories often create the strongest audience connectionWe also share real examples—from our own speaking experiences and from Thought Leader Academy clients—of how telling the truth (even when it doesn't make you look perfect) can be incredibly powerful, freeing, and impactful. If you want your stories to:Deepen audience connectionBuild credibility instead of skepticismSupport your message instead of distracting from it…this episode will help you rethink how you use storytelling in your talks, podcasts, and brand messaging.(This episode originally aired as episode 350 on October 9, 2023.Links:Show notes at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/mistake/Discover your Speaker Archetype by taking our free quiz at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/quiz/Enroll in our Thought Leader Academy: https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/academy/ Connect on LinkedIn:Carol Cox = https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolcoxDiane Diaz = https://www.linkedin.com/in/dianediazRelated Podcast Episodes:Episode 337: Sharing Your Story as a Catalyst for Transformation with Karen KeeneEpisode 341: Unearthing Your Unique Message: Discovering What Makes You Stand Out with Judy CarlsonEpisode 92: Deconstructing My TEDx Talk: Why We're Uncomfortable with Women in Power
Guest Speaker Pastor Rob Pochek (MBC Team Leader for Prayer & Evangelism) brought a powerful message reminding us that every Christian has a story, and God intends to use it. From John 9 and the healing of the man born blind, we learn that Jesus is on a mission to bring people to belief — and one of the greatest tools He gives us is our own testimony. If you love Jesus, you can talk about Him. Sharing your story joins Jesus in His mission.
In this episode, Professor Rory O'Connor speaks with Jordan Lees, a lived experience expert and research volunteer who has worked with the National Institute for Health and Care Research Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration. They discuss the importance of public and patient involvement in mental health research and the crucial role lived experience plays in shaping meaningful, impactful studies. The conversation also explores Jordan's experience volunteering for a clinical trial, offering insight into what participation is really like and why it matters. After being healed by Jesus, the man set free from demons was sent to share his story—and he did, to great effect. Your story, too, matters. It doesn't have to be dramatic—it just has to be real. The psalmist says, “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what He has done for me.” This week empowers us to reflect on our own stories of God's faithfulness and share them naturally with others. Mark 5:1-20 (ESV)They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.Psalm 66:16-20 (ESV)Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me!

From overcoming social anxiety to managing a $40M book of business, Brian's journey proves that anyone can learn to decode others and communicate with confidence. Our stories are the training ground God uses for His glory. He uses what broke us to birth empathy in us Your story is so meaningful because it comes through places you though you wouldn't ever recover from. Romans 8:28 calls for in all things God works for the good of those who love Him. We don't go through these trials just to move on. We go through them to move others. The devil would love nothing more than our pain to make us bitter, but God wants to use our stories to make us better equipped. When you share your story, you will go back and look at the moment that broke you. You will see how it redirected your prayers, refined your standards and revived your dependency on God alone. This is the moment when we share our stories and our heartbreak becomes holy ground. Any pain in our story, isn't the end of our story. Its the activation of it.

This week, Chuck Mingo shows us your story more powerful than any old piece of metal you could buy at a Renaissance Fair. Recorded live at Crossroads Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.
