This week we take a break with Ben Edmunds returning from Breakside Brewery in the Slabtown district of NW Portland. Ben talks Hazy vs. West Coast IPAs, as he introduces us to his latest Lagers, surpises us with a Stout. Bronwyn has a mutual friend, Ryan plays with geography, and Damian discusses barrel aging. Fun with nominclature, entendres, naming rights and even puns on this episode of Brew Happy!
Portland apartment fundamentals have declined in recent months as many markets across the country begin to see growth dip negative. However, as Rebecca Sands, Vice President at RPM, points out, context in this market is critical, and Portland has been one of the best performing markets on a compound annual growth basis for the past 10 years. Suburban multifamily is doing well and some urban pockets like Slabtown are holding their own. New supply is an issue in some areas, but the long term growth prospects are decent and there's reason for optimism in the Portland market. Going madly off in all directions! The show kicks off with a special track from Colin & Peter Learn, making connections to Lunenburg via Deep Dark Woods and Slabtown via a cancon classic from Liverpool (the band that is) before exploring new tracks from Summerfolk alumni Tanya Tagaq, Okan (who will be coming back to Summerfolk this year), The Sadies, the Chippewa Travellers, featured on a Halluci Nation banger, and a absolutely irresistible classic from Kate & Anna McGarrigle. GBR also checks in with local bowmaster and music teacher Victoria Yeh, Chelsea Wolfe laying down some darkness with Converge, sound poetry supergroup Owen Sound with a cut from their Meaford Tank Range record and an artist named Aysanabee who you're going to want to catch this summer at Summerfolk. As a special treat the show wraps up with selections from Grateful for Breath courtesy of local songsmith David Sereda and erstwhile Owen Sound poet laureate Liz Zetlin and the Tom Thomson Gallery. Never a dull moment on Georgian Bay Roots!
The whole team at Slabtown joined The Cider Crate team on their patio of the very impressive facility to sample way to many ciders for a Friday at noon!
For many, this neighborhood has only recently hit their radar, with the construction of the new stadium and the redevelopment of the old Norfolk Southern headquarters. But did you know this is one of the oldest parts of Atlanta? Listen to this week's episode to learn about Slabtown and Snake Nation, the early mayoral elections, the first bridge in Atlanta and how Castleberry Hill got it's name. Enjoying the podcast? The boys are back live from the new Breakside brewpub in the Slabtown neighborhood. They are joined by the legendary Patrick Harris of The Hot Corner on 1080 the fan. The boys map out a one day beer trip for a first timer in PDX. Then they talk about the marketing scam that is “American Craft Mexican” lagers.
Our guests this week are Laurel Truax and Jason Manke from Slabtown Marketing. This Michigan marketing firm has been successful approaching marketing from a sales perspective and sales from a marketing perspective. There's always a lot of talk about sales and marketing alignment, but not a lot of action. Laurel and Jason are here today to convince you that sales and marketing synergy can lead to more innovation, less friction and ultimately increased revenue. Welcome to Grady Memorial Hospital, where you can check in (after they hit you with their car) but never check out! If you were wondering where Beth was, The Walking Dead solved the mystery. We weren’t wondering and as far as we can tell neither was her sister Maggie. But we digress. We may have found a character even more annoying than Beth in one Officer Dawn Lerner. Can she just ride that stationary bike off into the sunset already? Though we both thought this was an interesting concept, we felt it fell a little flat. We have pervy cops, crooked doctors, forced amputations, and debts that can seemingly never be paid off. One positive thing to note was the introduction of Everybody Hates Chris aka Noah. We aren’t real sure where he gets his information about Beth’s strength, but we kinda love this member of the Lollipop Guild. If only we could have escaped this episode the way Noah escaped the hospital! The Walker Nation crew discuss The Walking Dead episode "Slabtown" and more!
Talking Through Slabtown While our love affair with The Walking Dead never ends, it can wax and wane. After three powerful episodes, we came down off our high with the fourth episode of season 5, Slabtown. This Beth-centric episode didn’t pack quite the same punch, but it certainly did not lack for creepy. The mystery of what happened to Beth is finally divulged, and we are very glad it did not drag out for the whole first half of the season. (Cough cough Sophia! cough) This episode can most definitely be labeled a filler episode, but the reveal at the end makes for an exciting setup! Grady Memorial Hospital In this episode, we talk about what is going on with Grady Memorial Hospital and how we think Beth came to be there. We discuss the dynamics of the residents and how their post-apocalyptic survival is similar to other groups we’ve seen and how it differs. And of course, we talk about the ratings this week, and how they stacked up against baseball and football. In other news, it seems both red and blue can agree that The Walking Dead is an awesome show! Ratings are up Slabrown got a 7.60 in the 18-49 demographic with 14.518 million viewers, which is up from last week‘s 7.00 and 13.801 million viewers. Send in your feedback! We know you’re out there, and we can’t wait to hear from you! Leave us your feedback and tell us what you think the most Awesome Sauce moment in the episode was, who was your Survivor of the Week or give us your Death Predictions. Do you think Noah is the one with Daryl at the end of Four Walls and a Roof? Do you think Beth and Carol will make it to the end of season 5? We have our opin

You’re just in time for our review of “Slabtown” (Season 5, Episode 4) of AMC’s The Walking Dead series. Hear Dustin, Margaret and Erica expound on whether clean and pressed uniforms really do contribute to forging a new society. We also discuss Beth's journey and whether that Caravaggio hanging in Doctor Steve's office could possibly be authentic. In Slabtown -- you'll come for the premiere medical care, but you'll stay for the roasted guinea pig.

The story of Beth's disappearance is revealed and things are not good. Will we ever find good people outside our group? Apparently not. We read some listener feedback and find that a lot of people didn't like this episode. We give our take on it. Even though one of us was away, we still managed to get an episode out this week. Yay! Remote podcasting via skype was cool but we both prefer the face to face interaction. Check out this episode and give us feedback.
This week, The Walking Dead returns to the big city. It’s been a long time since we last saw the streets of Atlanta, and it makes a welcome return here. “Four Walls and a Roof” continues the awesome streak that is Season 5 of The Walking Dead. The death toll rises as we get the first death of a major character this season as well as a few others. The ratings for this episode are still high, but Brian blames the World Series for the slight drop we see from last week. However, The Walking Dead still tops cable viewership for the third week in a row. In this week’s discussion, we talked about what we liked about the episode, as well as a few things that missed the mark.
