In this episode of Black Sitcom History, Shannon and Summer delve into the evolving portrayals of Black families on television, from idealized nuclear families to more complex, relatable dynamics. The conversation highlights iconic shows like The Cosby Show, Good Times, The Jeffersons, Family Matters, and Everybody Hates Chris, examining how each depicted different aspects of Black family life—from wealth and success to the challenges of poverty and community resilience. They explore the criticism surrounding the portrayal of perfect families, questioning whether such portrayals are unrealistic or aspirational. The hosts discuss how these shows impacted their own family dynamics, drawing lessons on parenting, communication, and values. They also touch on more modern sitcoms like Black-ish and The Proud Family, emphasizing the importance of showing a wide range of Black experiences, including blended and extended families. The episode reflects on how media shapes perceptions of family and tackles whether TV should prioritize realism or offer an escape through idealized portrayals. Summer and Shannon argue for the necessity of diversity in Black representation, highlighting that no one depiction can capture the vast experiences of Black families.00:00 - Idealized Black Families on TV00:58 - The Influence of Television Families04:18 - Black Sitcoms and Family Dynamics06:37 - Portrayal of Family Dynamics09:57 - Actor Departure and Show Dynamics11:16 - Nostalgia and TV Classics12:53 - Family Dynamics in TV Shows14:58 - Multi-Generational Family Dynamics15:50 - Extended Family Dynamics in TV Shows17:26 - Blended and Nuclear Family Dynamics18:59 - Sitcom Chaos: Katie's Pet Dilemma21:14 - Family Dynamics on TV Shows23:27 - Generational Dynamics in TV Shows24:56 - Diverse Black Family Representations27:49 - Realistic Family Portrayals30:30 - Movie Preferences and Dislikes31:38 - Choosing the Right Path33:12 - Imperfect Families on TV35:41 - Reality TV: A Mirror to Life37:45 - Reality TV and Celebrity Appeal

For Terry Crews, there are no rules. “There used to be so many rules. They used to say, ‘you can't do TV, you must only do movies, you can't do commercials.'” But Crews has proven you can do all of those things and more. He just joined pal Dave Bautista in The Killer's Game (September 13). Crews loves that it's funny, saying “to make people laugh is probably the hardest job in entertainment, because no one can agree on what's funny.” He also loves that “it wasn't three hours. I've had it with the three-hour movies.” Whether it's acting or hosting America's Got Talent, Crews says he polished his comedy skills in an unexpected place while in the NFL. “I honed my skills trying to make other athletes laugh in the locker room.” He'll be putting that skill to use in the upcoming animated reboot of Everybody Hates Chris. “I have been floored by the acceptance of things I've done in the past that have all of a sudden become bigger.” Crews is aware how rare he has it. “I'm an old football player, so everything I'm doing is already past what anyone ever expected.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Jen just tries to hold on as best she can! Oh yeah, and this is part one because we don't know how to shut up!You can easily tell how white your hosts are by their lack of knowledge of UPN (not the only tell, if we're being honest), which provided a home for black shows and showrunners alike. Or at least it did for a while, before a gradual whitewashing leading up to the network's merger with the WB. The Hollywood Reporter provides a post-mortem.[Former senior VP of comedy development at Paramount Pictures Television] Rose Catherine Pinkney believes the decision to merge UPN out of existence came down to ad revenue. “Ultimately, you want the most dollars that you can get for your ads,” she says. Though UPN's Black-led scripted shows (which by the end of UPN's run included Eve, All of Us, Everybody Hates Chris) were largely popular with audiences, advertisers were evidently less inclined to pay top dollar to support shows targeting Black viewers. Farquhar, co-creator of Moesha and The Parkers, recalls an advertising person saying, “We're not interested in ‘downscaled demographics.' ”They still make Tamogochis, holy shit. Can't get enough of PCMCIA cards? Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Todd Bridges, Co-Star, “Diff'rent Strokes”, Author, “Killing Willis” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Todd Bridges, is an actor, director and producer who rose to international stardom as one of the most popular and beloved child stars of the 70s and 80s.  He first captured our hearts as “Loomis” on the TV show “Fish”, and then as “Willis Jackson” on “Diff'rent Strokes”.   He's also appeared in dozens of movies including “Thursday the 12th”, “The Sounds of Silence”, “Turning Point”, “Dead Ringer”, “Nightblade”, “Hospital Arrest”, “Hope for the Holidays”, “Cheer Bloody Murder” and many more.  And on television, in addition to his iconic work on “Fish” and “Diff'rent Strokes”, he appeared in the groundbreaking miniseries “Roots”, as well as on “Little House on the Prairie”, “The Waltons”, “The Facts of Life”, “Circle of Pain”, “The Young and the Restless”, “Everybody Hates Chris”, and many more TV shows and movies.   But behind that beautiful smile and charismatic talent as an actor, and enormous likeability, this is a man who has had to overcome a number of exceedingly difficult traumas and obstacles, including child abuse and betrayal of the worst kind, as well as police harassment, racism, wrongful prosecution, and vicious treatment by the tabloid press while he was struggling to overcome a very severe and debilitating substance abuse addiction.    In 2010, he wrote a highly compelling, heart wrenching and unforgettable memoir entitled, “Killing Willis: From Diff'rent Strokes, to the Mean Streets, to the Life I Always Wanted”, in which he chronicles his tumultuous and gut-wrenching journey, from the heights of superstardom to the depths of despair, through his addiction, criminal court prosecutions and long road to rehab, recovery and healing, and to rebuilding the highly successful career and family life he is now enjoying and so richly deserves.    Our guest has given so much back to the community.  In 1992 he founded the Todd Bridges Youth Foundation, and in 2010 he became the official spokesperson for ICDC College's Alcohol and Drug Counselling Program.  Through his work as an addiction counselor and founder of the Society for Ethical Addiction Treatment, he has helped thousands of people conquer their drug and alcohol addictions and live positive, constructive lives.  And I can tell you, as a retired criminal court judge who knows only too well what this man has been through, it's truly an honor to have him here with us. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Todd Bridges, go to:https://realtoddbridges.com/https://www.facebook.com/todd.bridges2/https://www.instagram.com/toddbridges/https://twitter.com/ToddBridgeshttps://www.seatsociety.orghttp://toddbridgesyouthfoundation.org #ToddBridges    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

ABOUT JACKÉE HARRY Vivacious, witty, and completely unforgettable, Jackée Harry was born to entertain.Born Jacqueline Yvonne Harry on August 14, 1956 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and reared from the age of nine in Harlem, New York, by her mother, Flossie, Jackée landed the lead role of the King in her school's production of The King and I at the tender age of fourteen. Upon graduation from New York City's High School of Music and Art with a distinction in Opera, Jackée attended the University of Long Island, where she earned her B.A. in education. Jackée began her career as a history teacher at Brooklyn Technical High School but left after two years to pursue acting. She studied at the Henry Street Settlement on the Lower East Side and made her professional acting debut in 1973 in Richard Wesley's Goin' Through Changes; not long afterward, she made her Broadway debut in A Broadway Musical as Melinda Bernard. Other Broadway performances include The Wiz, Eubie!, and One Mo' Time. In 1983, Jackée made her first television appearance opposite Morgan Freeman in the daytime soap operaAnother World. A year later, she landed her iconic role of Sandra Clark on the NBC sitcom 227. As the breakout star of the series, Jackée became the first African American to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and was also nominated for a Golden Globe. Her performance on227 inspired NBC producers to create a television pilot for her entitled Jackée. After departing from 227 in 1989, she starred opposite Oprah Winfrey in the critically acclaimed adaptation of Gloria Naylor's novelThe Women of Brewster Place. In 1991, Jackée joined an all-star cast led by Della Reese when she played the role of Ruth 'CoCo' Royal in The Royal Family. From 1994-1999, she starred as the adoptive mother of Tia and Tamara Mowry's characters on the ABC/WB sitcom Sister, Sister, winning the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for two consecutive years in 1999 and 2000. Jackée also made guest appearances onAmen, Designing Women, Dave's World, Hollywood Squares, 7th Heaven, and That's So Raven, before joining the cast of Everybody Hates Chris in 2006. Hollywood success did not lead Jackée to turn her back on theater; in 1994 she returned to the stage as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill followed by stints in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide and The Vagina Monologues. In 2003 she played the role of the Madam in The Boys From Syracuse on Broadway. Jackée also performed before sold-out audiences across the nation in the stage play The Cleanup Woman, which is called "one of the highest grossing gospel stage plays of all time" and fronted an Off-Broadway limited-run of NEWSical: The Musical.Beyond acting, Jackée is a vocal champion of healthy living, education, and philanthropy. She is proud to be a spokesperson for the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, and a Global Ambassador to the Women's International Center. The National Congress of Black Women presented her with the "Woman of Substance" Award in 2010.In addition to recurring roles on Let's Stay Together, Baby Daddy, Girl Meets World, and The Cool Kids, Jackée starred on the CW's The First Family and OWN'sThe Paynes. She was nominated for a Nollywood and African Film Critics Award for her role in the motion picture The Man in 3B. In 2019, Jackée participated in a groundbreaking reimagining of Norman Lear's The Jeffersons, which garnered more than 22 million viewers. In 2021, she rejoined the world of daytime television as real estate mogul Paulina Price on Days of our Lives. Larger than life and twice as funny, Jackée continues to entertain and inspire in a way that permanently cements her place in the American cultural landscape. ABOUT DAYS OF OUR LIVES ON PEACOCK For the past 58 years, Days of our Lives has remained a staple daytime drama. It has weathered political and societal shifts since the mid-1960s and proudly introduced its first Black family, the Grants, in the mid-1970s. Its female heroine, Valerie Grant, shared daytime's first interracial kiss in 1977. Today, Black stories continue to be front and center, addressing societal issues including healthcare, family and career. Today's cast includes James Reynolds, with Jackée Harry, Raven Bowens, Elia Cantu, and features Lamon Archey and Sal Stowers as "Eli" and "Lani" respectively, who were the couple in the show's first Black wedding.https://jackee-online.com/ https://www.facebook.com/JackeeHarry https://www.twitter.com/JackeeHarry https://www.instagram.com/JackeeHarry https://www.youtube.com/c/JackeeHarryOfficialBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.

LOOK OUT! It's only Films To Be Buried With! Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with legendary actor who we've seen on-screen for almost all his life - it's  TYLER JAMES WILLIAMS! Just by way of speed intro, Tyler played a young Chris Rock in Everybody Hates Chris, which you might recall from a minute ago. But a more up to date credit would be the fabulous Abbott Elementary, which has just been picked up for a 4th season so here's to more Quinta and Tyler and the gang! Anyway - a delightful episode, with ups and downs like you wouldn't believe - the 'Sesame Street Peak', memoirs, fear as an indicator in life, couples being too sexy, dogs breaking the fourth wall in heaven (never typed those words in that order before), avoiding troublesome phases of a young actor's life, and a rugged near death period of his life where work nearly concluded his whole story... A brilliant ep. Enjoy! Acclaimed TV and movie writer, Adam Lorenzo, spoke to me about owning a college bar … while still in college, his work ethic and what keeps him hustling pages, and his latest college survival guide ALL I NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED FROM MY COLLEGE BAR. Adam Lorenzo is a writer/producer who works in both live-action and animation who started as a joke writer, selling material to Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon on Saturday Night Live's “Weekend Update''; Jimmy Kimmel; and David Letterman, which resulted in his first staff-writing job, on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn (co-created and executive produced by Letterman). Other notable TV credits include the Emmy-winning Everybody Loves Raymond, Are We There Yet? (starring Terry Crews and Ice Cube), and Everybody Hates Chris, based on the life of Chris Rock. Before successfully pursuing his dream of being a writer, he owned a college bar... while still a student at Syracuse University. The author's debut in publishing, naturally, is All I Need To Know I Learned From My College Bar, a whimsical look at what Adam calls the "valuable life lessons learned working and laughing with people from all over the world in that cathedral of knowledge known as a college bar."x The self-described “college survival guide” is based on his life and has illustrations by Antonio Giovanni Pinna of The New Yorker. We look at the importance of his statement and how other celebrities may follow suit.  Taylor Swift / Matty Healy Break Up: We've all seen the news. Taylor Swift and Matty Healy have officially split, and according to People, “it was always casual.” We pose the question of what role we as consumers and fans, as well as the media, have in speculating and commentating on celebrity relationships. We also discuss the levels of fame involved in such a high profile relationship and the scrutiny that comes along with being uber famous.  Enjoy this episode?
