The Community health needs assessment: An underappreciated tool

In today's episode, we explore some big questions about community health — and how hospitals and health care workers can help promote equitable health outcomes in their communities. The Community Health Needs Assessment, or CHNA, is a  powerful tool for promoting health equity, says Leslie Marshburn, Vice President of Strategy & Population Health at Grady Health System. “We want to be hearing directly from the individuals that we serve — what they believe their community health needs are,” Marshburn says. The information is coupled with public data, “ideally at the most granular level, like the census track or zip code. And so those national data sets can help inform what the needs are, and then layering that with the community voice through your primary data collection and synthesizing all of that helps you identify your priorities.” When it comes to improving health outcomes in communities, it's also critical that health care providers understand health disparities, says Dr. Maura George, an associate professor in the Department of Medicine and an internist at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where she also serves as Medical Director of Ethics.  “I think clinicians who don't know how to recognize disparities are going to perpetuate them, and we can all do that unintentionally,” George says. “I think knowing our own internalized bias, implicit bias is important, because you have to realize how that can interact in the patient care space.” Marshburn and George joined Movement Is Life's summit as workshop panelists, and spoke with steering committee member Dr. Zachary Lum for this podcast episode. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States alone, with one person dying from heart disease every 33 seconds. February, in addition to American Heart Month, is Black History Month. Black Americans are 30 percent more likely to die from heart disease than non-Hispanic white Americans. What risk factors contribute to heart disease impacting Black Americans at higher and more fatal rates? Are there lifestyle changes we can implement to shift health outcomes? We spoke to Anekwe Onwuanyi, MD, board-certified cardiologist and professor of medicine who serves as chief of cardiology at Morehouse School of Medicine, medical director of the heart failure program at Grady Memorial Hospital, and president of the Association of Black Cardiologists, about barriers in healthcare, the impact of stress and socioeconomic factors on cardiovascular issues, preventative measures, and necessary policy initiatives to create sustainable change in the Black community.

When his 6-year-old daughter becomes unresponsive, Jacob Weight calls 911. He tells dispatch one of his older children was bathing his 6-year-old when she went limp and suffered some type of seizure. First responders are met by Jacob at the door. He refuses to allow EMS into the house, telling them he must get his daughter dressed. He brings her outside where she can be seen. Police and first responders are taken aback by the conditions at the home. Trash is scattered about. Feces is smeared on the ground, and the smell of urine is very strong. The 6-year-old girl they have been called to treat is covered in open sores and KDKA reports she has extensive bruises and appears malnourished. Once the 6-year-old girl is at the hospital the full extent of her injuries is apparent. According to a medical report, her teeth are broken and rotted, and her feet are swollen. When she arrives at Uniontown Hospital,  she is found to be hypothermic, with a body temperature registering at only 88.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Pennsylvania state troopers begin their investigation into the parents of the children in the house,  after police note that doctors at the hospital state multiple times, that the little girl could have died as a result of the abuse and neglect. The doctors also say if she returns to her current environment she is likely to die of the abuse and neglect. During the investigation, Weight and Frost's teenage nephew, who lived with them, describes how the young girl's mother would zip-tie her hands and feet, lock her naked in a cage and refuse to wash her. Frost would also starve the little girl, not feeding her for days at a time. The floor under the cage was rotting from feces and urine that was never cleaned. WTAE reports that a 5-year-old child was interviewed and asked if anyone helped the girl clean up her poop and pee. The child responded, "They want her to eat it... my parents." Jacob William Weight, 37, and 33-year-old Mimi Ann Frost are charged with child abuse, involuntary servitude, and strangulation among several other offenses.  They are accused of starving their daughter while making sure their other children and dogs, had plenty to eat. A 33-year-old Seattle man arrested three times in five days at or near Taylor Swift's New York apartment.  David Crowe's latest arrest came just two hours after he was in court for stalking her home.  Crowe first appeared at the McDonald's two blocks away from Swift's New York City townhouse. Then a witness says Crowe eased his way back down to Swift's building and was seen looking in a dumpster.  Then Crowe sat down on the loading dock a few doors down from Swift's apartment. Someone who recognized Crowe called 911. Police arrested Crowe on a criminal contempt charge, due to the fact an order of protection had just been issued during his arraignment on two counts of harassment and two counts of stalking. David Crowe has been in New York for at least the last few months. The New York Post reports prosecutors revealed that Crowe has staked out Taylor Swift's townhouse thirty  times in the past two months.  And his recent arrest spree began Saturday afternoon when police got a 911 call about a "disorderly person" trying to open the door to Taylor Swift's townhouse. This is not the first time Taylor Swift has dealt with a stalker.  Last summer, Westerly Rhode Island Police Chief Paul Gingerella said a woman who had previously been warned to stay away from Taylor Swift's home in Rhode Island was arrested outside the beachfront property.  A Florida man broke into Swift's home in New York City in 2018. He was sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to criminal contempt and attempted burglary. That was followed up in 2019 by an Iowa man who said he just wanted to meet the singer. He was arrested near her beachfront mansion carrying a crowbar and lock picks. A few months after that experience, a man from New Jersey was caught inside her home. The Connecticut State Police believe Fotis Dulos attacked Jennifer Dulos at her New Canaan home,  killed her, and then tried to dispose of the evidence in trash bins around Hartford.  Michelle Troconis was with Dulos during the time he was dumping trash bags. Her attorney, Jon Schoehorn, says Troconis told police multiple times that she was on her phone, unaware of what her boyfriend was doing. The jury has now seen that recovered evidence, retrieved from trash.   Connecticut State Police Sgt. Kevin Duggan testified about what was found in the trash bins and the process used for finding them.  He described how the items were taken from the trash bin,  the contents spread out, photographed, then placed them into an investigator trash bag. The items were then taken for analysis.    One of the items recovered from the trash bins was a bra with what appears to be blood stains. The bra's back clasp was still connected, but the front had been cut.   A long-sleeved shirt is shown.  It too looks like it has bloodstains on it and has been cut  in much the same way the blood stained bra.  Duggan also testifies that officers uncovered zip ties, plastic ponchos, a white t-shirt, a bath towel, black gloves, a screwdriver, and a box cutter, and all appeared to have blood-like stains.  Joining Nancy Grace Today: Mark Sherman -  Managing Partner of Mark Sherman Law, www.markshermanlaw.com  Dr. Angela Arnold -  Psychiatrist,  AngelaArnoldMD.com, Expert in the Treatment of Pregnant/Postpartum Women, Former Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology: Emory University, Former Medical Director of The Psychiatric Ob-Gyn Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital, Voted My Buckhead's Best Psychiatric Practice of 2023 Lisa Dadio - Former Police Lieutenant, New Haven Police Department, Annie Le Lead Detective, Senior Lecturer, Director of the Center for Advanced Policing and Graduate Program Coordinator, Investigations program, University of New Haven  Jeff Gentry - Forensics-Certified bloodstain pattern analyst and ABMDI registered death investigator, Author: A Visual Guide to Bloodstain Pattern Analysis: Bloodstain Pattern Analysis for Death and Crime Scene Investigators & "Death Investigation: Information to Obtain During a Forensic Death Investigation  TikTok: @jeffreygentryBPA, Facebook: /Jeff Gentry Bloodstain Pattern Analyst  Dr. Eric Eason -  Board Certified Forensic Pathologist, consultant, Instagram: @eric_a_eason, Facebook: Eric August Eason, LinkedIn: Eric Eason, MD   Taylor Hartz - Criminal Justice Reporter for the Hartford Courant,Co-Host of the award winning true crime podcast “Looking For the Todt Family”,  www.courant.com, X: @taylorjhartz   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hendricks was allegedly driving a van on the Six Flags Over Georgia grounds with multiple occupants in the rear cargo compartment, including two juveniles, without seatbelts or seats. Ragsdale commended Marietta City Schools for their similar efforts. The initial bans were prompted by an email from the right-wing social media group Libs of TikTok. Ragsdale asserted that once sexually explicit content is identified, it is the district's responsibility to protect students and inform parents. The ongoing review aims to identify and remove such materials. Critics argue that the bans disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ content, leading to concerns about the targeting of the LGBTQ+ community. Public commenters, including high school senior Ava Bussey, expressed opposition to the book bans, citing the impact on LGBTQ+ students and urging the district to listen to students' needs for a successful learning environment. STORY 5: Cobb Leaders Break Ground on Mableton Workforce Development Center Cobb County is set to establish the Cobb WorkSource Center in Mableton, with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by over 50 people. The $4 million project, funded by $2.8 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and grants, aims to become a hub for workforce development, offering training rooms, a computer lab, and business coaching services. The 10,000-square-foot center will replace Cobb Fire Station 1 on Mableton Parkway, addressing the need for workforce development services in the southern part of the county. The initiative aligns with the county's commitment to equity, focusing on areas with high concentrations of low-income and minority communities. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: GCPS   STORY 6: Ragsdale Announces Location for $50 Million Event Center The Cobb County Board of Education plans to build a $50 million, 8,000-seat event building on Glover Street next to the district's headquarters. The facility, approved in a 6-1 vote in March 2023, is intended for hosting events like science fairs, art presentations, and graduation ceremonies. The property, spanning over 10 acres, includes the former A1 Rental facility, the district's police department headquarters, and a demolished building at 440 Glover Street. The new event center aims to fill a void in the northern part of Cobb County, providing a space for various activities. Board member Becky Sayler has expressed concerns about additional costs and lack of clarity regarding the project's expenses. Board Chairman Randy Scamihorn anticipates the new facility's potential and the need for improvements to the police department headquarters, with construction timelines yet to be determined. STORY 7: 'A Different Mindset': Cobb School Board Talks New Career Center The Cobb County School Board is considering options to enhance post-secondary education by approving an architect for a new career center in north Cobb. The board plans to engage Atlanta-based Collins Cooper Carusi Architects to design the center, funded by the sixth education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (Ed-SPLOST) at an estimated cost of over $700,000. The center, mandated to be in north Cobb per the SPLOST project list, aims to provide students with alternative pathways to traditional four-year colleges. The district is currently exploring suitable locations for the center, with a central north Cobb location suggested for better accessibility. Additionally, the board discussed the development of a $50 million multi-use facility approved in March 2023, which is expected to host various events such as science fairs, arts presentations, and graduation ceremonies. BREAK: DRAKE STORY 8: Major airline fires back at analyst over bankruptcy claims The airline industry, known for its challenges, faces uncertainties with potential bankruptcies. Warren Buffett's past skepticism resonates, as airlines like JetBlue and Spirit grapple with financial woes. Analysts, including TD Cowen's Helene Becker, express concerns about Spirit Airlines' survival, pointing to its debt and financial constraints. While Spirit denies pursuing Chapter 11, analysts suggest bankruptcy restructuring as a viable option. The airline's future hinges on debtholder cooperation, given its financial vulnerabilities. Fitch Ratings urges a clear liquidity plan. Despite potential disruptions, bankruptcy doesn't guarantee passenger abandonment. Spirit's decision to resist a merger with JetBlue adds complexity to its fate, impacting consumers and the airline industry. Spirit asserts ongoing efforts to fortify its balance sheet and operations.   Break: INGLES 1 – Henssler :60  Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. The only thing police can confirm is that the corpse is female.  During our broadcast, it's announce that the body has been identified as Mary Margaret Haxby-Jones. She would have been 81-years-old at the time her remains were found. It's believed that she lived at the home at some point.   She may have been missing or dead for up to nine years.   SDPD says no missing report was every filed for her.  Police say the out-of-town visitors were not related to Haxby-Jones. TWO CHILDREN DEAD IN THEIR BEDS? The Curious Case of 35-Y-O-Mom Kimberlee Singler

Just after midnight, Kimberlee Singler, 35, calls 911 to report a home break-in. She tells police that her two of her children have been murdered.  The police response report says Officers found "an adult female and an 11-year-old female who had sustained injuries," as well as a 9-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy who were "deceased at the scene." Singler's third child, the 11-year-old daughter was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  She is hospitalized for a few days and then released. Singler is also treated for minor injuries.   As police investigate the reported burglary, Singler works with officers, giving statements about what happened.  Then police determined the burglary report is unfounded, and present evidence to obtain a warrant for Singler's arrest, but the mom is nowhere to be found. Since she was not a suspect, Singler was not under surveillance and by the time she needed to be, she was gone. Police uncover an ongoing legal battle between the mom and her ex-husband Kevin Wentz.  Wentz's attorneys say their contentious divorce and custody dispute has been going on for over five years.  Just three months ago, Kimberlee Singler filed a request for a temporary protection order in El Paso County. She claims Kevin Wentz waved a knife at her. Wentz denies the allegations. Two months later,  in a different jurisdiction, a Larimer County court held a hearing on Singler's emergency motion to restrict parenting time over the same allegations about the knife. The court rescinded the order finding there was no imminent threat from Wentz. The court ordered that the children have additional time with their father, Kevin Wentz, around Thanksgiving and again December 16 through December 31.   It was arranged for the child exchanges to take place at a police station in Colorado Springs and the Greely Police Station.  When Singler failed to show up with the children, Wentz's attorney filed an emergency motion to law enforcement for assistance to enforce parenting time. When Lindsay Clancy's third child is born, her recovery seems to be different.   The 32-year-old reaches out to her parents and her in-laws to help her manage the children and things around the home. Her husband, Patrick Clancy sets up a home office in the basement to work remotely, so he can be on hand to help. When Lindsay starts to have thoughts of suicide, and worse, hurting the children, she checks herself into the McLean Psychiatric Hospital,  Five days after checking into a psychiatric hospital Lindsay Clancy is reportedly told she doesn't have postpartum depression. Husband Patrick Clancy tells friends that after her hospital stay, Lindsay seems to be getting better. She is sleeping better, interacting with friends and family, and going out in public without any difficulty. When Patrick Clancy asks his wife if she is having any suicidal thoughts, Lindsay Clancy says "No."    Later on in the year, with his wife having been prescribed at least 13 different medications, Patrick Clancy texts a friend saying he's concerned that Lindsey has been prescribed too many medications. Patrick allegedly told friends that he worried she was suffering “the worst side effects possible” from one of her prescriptions. He says he thinks she is going through benzodiazepine withdrawal.    On a Tuesday afternoon Lindsay Clancy sends a text to her husband to pick up takeout.  As Patrick Clancy leaves to pick up dinner, Lindsay sends him a text to stop off by the drugstore and pick up some medicine for the children.   Patrick Clancy stops by the drug store to pick up the medication but gets confused as to exactly which medicine to buy. He calls Lindsay Clancy on the phone, but she doesn't answer. She calls back a minute later. Patrick says she sounded like she was in the middle of something. Lindsay answers his question about the medication and Patrick picks it up and heads to the 3V to get their dinner.  When Patrick Clancy comes home, he's met with silence. He finds his wife in the backyard. She had jumped out of a second-floor window after slitting her wrists. The children are in the basement,  strangled, an exercise band still wound around their necks.   Investigators revealed in court papers that Lindsay Clancy allegedly researched "ways to kill" before the deaths of her three children.  Clancy is in a hospital ward, paralyzed after her second-floor fall, and faces three counts each of murder and strangulation.  Joining Nancy Grace Today: Darryl Cohen – Former Assistant District Attorney (Fulton County, Georgia) Former Assistant State Attorney (Florida), and Defense Attorney: Cohen, Cooper, Estep, & Allen, LLC; Facebook: “Darryl B Cohen;” Twitter: @DarrylBCohen Dr. Angela Arnold – Psychiatrist, Atlanta, GA; Expert in the Treatment of Pregnant/Postpartum Women; Former Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology: Emory University; Former Medical Director of The Psychiatric Ob-Gyn Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital; Voted “My Buckhead's Best Psychiatric Practice of 2022” Brian T. Decatur, Alabama police get a call for a well check on 36-year-old Cindy Crow.  WAFF reports a family member believed  Crow to be 8-months pregnant. Crow, however, looked like  she had lost a lot of weight, overnight. The family member, a sister,  told police that she had seen Crow leaving her home, with a large, white trash bag in the back floorboard of her car.  In the home, bloody feminine products were found in the trash.  Police contacted Crow at work, where she agreed to go to the hospital to prove that she was not pregnant.  While waiting for the test results, Crow gave an officer consent to search her cell phone, where he found the app LIFE360.   This allowed the detective to trace the route Cindy Crow took when she left her home with the white trash bag.   Using information garnered from the LIFE360 app, detectives found a location with a dumpster, Wally World Mini-Mart.  Investigators searched of the inside of the dumpster and found the trash bag containing the deceased body of a newborn baby girl. It was stuffed in the bottom of the dumpster under several other large bags of trash. Cindy Crow was arrested and so far is charged with abuse of a corpse. Jordan DeMay was a popular, well-liked sports star at his Michigan high school. The 17-year-old took his own life just hours after someone demanded money to keep a compromising photo from being sent to his parents and friends. The extortionists, a group of men from Nigeria who have targeted more than 100 children and adults, initially contacted DeMay over a hacked social media account, posing as a teen girl who enticed Jordan into sending a nude photo. The sextortionist then flipped the script, pressuring DeMay to pay to keep the photo private. The teen sent everything he had, totaling $300. The perpetrators wanted more. Police say the entire sequence of events appeared to have taken about six hours, until deputies responded to the DeMay home just after 7:30 a.m. The family is now hopeful Jordan will receive justice. FBI agents, with help from Nigerian law enforcement tracked down the three men behind the international sextortion ring.
