We discussed their upcoming show in Santa Rosa (Fridays at the Hood) on July 5th and their music. Cold Blood, as a whole, features a stellar group of musicians who have been playing together for nearly 20 years, including Steve Dunne on guitar, Steve Salinas on keyboards, a gritty-growling horn section comprised of John Hablieb and Rob Zuckerman along with a stellar rhythm section featuring Evan Palmerston on bass and T Moran on drums. The band members are all veteran Bay Area musicians who have played with many great artists, including Elvin Bishop, Jefferson Starship, Boz Skaggs, Albert Collins, and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/backstagesonoma/message

So, there was this show called The Adventures of Sam Spade. It started as a summer series on ABC in 1946 and quickly became a regular fall lineup on CBS. Howard Duff played the title role, and he was a San Francisco detective who was a total badass. The show was created by William Spier, who was a bigwig in the radio world. He put together a writing team, and they came up with all sorts of crazy stories for Sam to solve. Duff had a great voice, and his narration was smooth as butter. Plus, he had a lot of experience as an actor, so he knew how to bring the character to life. The show was a hit with listeners, and it ran for five seasons. It was one of the most popular detective shows on the radio, and it helped to define the genre. Duff became a household name, and he was even offered a movie contract. But eventually, Duff left the show to pursue other projects. NBC replaced him with Stephen Dunne, but it wasn't the same. Dunne was a good actor, but he just didn't have the presence that Duff did. The show limped along for a while, but it was eventually canceled in 1951. It's a shame that The Adventures of Sam Spade didn't last longer. It was a great show, and it's still fondly remembered by many old-time radio fans. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

On July 12, 1946, Dashiell Hammett’s famous private eye Sam Spade came to radio in what became one of the greatest detective shows of the era. With witty scripts and a dynamic lead performance from Howard Duff, the series thrilled listeners and kept a smile on their faces in a program that stands out from the crowd of hard-boiled gumshoes and cops. In honor of the seventieth anniversary of its radio debut, we’ll hear four episodes of The Adventures of Sam Spade. Howard Duff stars in “Sam and Psyche” (originally aired on ABC on August 2, 1946); “The Rushlight Diamond Caper” (originally aired on CBS on July 4, 1948); and “The Dick Foley Caper” (originally aired on CBS on September 26, 1948). We’ll also hear Stephen Dunne as Spade in “The Dog Bed Caper” (originally aired on NBC on December 1, 1950).

We salute actor Stephen Dunne, the second man to wear Sam Spade’s trench coat on radio. After struggling to break out of bit parts on the big screen, Dunne found success on radio in a number of shows. In 1950, after rumors of Communist ties cost Howard Duff the gig, Dunne stepped into the role of Sam Spade and put his own spin on the shamus for 24 episodes. His affable, easy-going qualities and smooth voice served him well as he later transitioned into television. We’ll hear him today as reporter “Lucky” Larson in “A Boy Asks for Help” from Deadline Mystery (originally aired on ABC on August 10, 1947). Then, Dunne is Spade in “The 25-1235679 Caper,” originally aired on NBC on January 5, 1951.

The Adventures of Sam Spade was first heard on ABC July 12, 1946, as a Friday-night summer series. The show clicked at once, and went into a regular fall lineup on CBS September 29, 1946. From then until 1949, Sam Spade was a Sunday-night thriller for Wildroot Cream Oil, starring Howard Duff in the title role. With Duff's departure, NBC took the series, leaving it on Sunday for Wildroot and starring Stephen Dunne as Spade. This version lasted until 1951, the last year running as a Friday sustainer. Spade's appearance on the air marked an almost literal transition from Dashiell Hammett's 1930 crime classic, The Maltese Falcon, where he first appeared.THIS EPISODE:February 9, 1951. NBC network. "The Sure Thing Caper". Sustaining. "Five Dollar Frankie" has been cheated by "Gentle Joe Higgins," a known horse-doper. "Gentle Joe" has a "sure thing," however, it's a most unusual "sure thing"!
