Sailing a ship is effortless when seas are calm and the wind is blowing in the right direction. And in business, it's easier to feel confident and in control when conditions are idyllic, profits are high and growth is steady. But what do you do when a storm hits? How do you turn things around and not only weather the storm, but emerge stronger? Turnarounds are challenging - in fact, within business, 70% of them fail. And the weight of expectation can test even the most experienced leaders and teams. So, what can we learn about the mechanics of managing a successful turnaround from the people who've done it? That's what we're exploring with Zak Brown, CEO at McLaren Racing, and Pauline Biddle, partner in M&A at Deloitte UK, in this episode of The Green Room as we ask: What does it take to turn things around? Tune in to find out: The essential first step all leaders must take when beginning a turnaround. How cultural change affects commercial success – and vice versa. Zak's advice to leaders who find themselves under pressure. What kind of mistakes are important to make while turning a business around. Enjoyed this episode? Griffin Warner and Big East Ben break down this weekends college basketball action. The guys are coming off a 2-0 best bet winning podcast. Podcast Overview Episode: Need for Seeds College Basketball Podcast, hosted by Griffin Warner ("Real News Corgi Warner") and "Big East Ben." Focus: Previewing five college basketball games and sharing best bets. The hosts reflect on their perfect 2-0 record from last weekend's picks. Game Previews and Analyses Alabama vs. Kentucky Odds: Kentucky -2 (home favorites). Analysis: Griffin Warner (0:13–5:25): Emphasized Alabama's inconsistency, referencing their loss to Ole Miss (64 points, 5/20 from three-point range). Highlighted Kentucky's dominance at home, excellent three-point defense (ranked 7th nationally), and offensive versatility with five potential three-point shooters. He predicts the Kentucky crowd will be a key factor despite the early game time. Big East Ben (1:33–3:39): Criticized Alabama's reliance on volume three-point shooting, citing their 252nd ranking in three-point percentage. Opted for Kentucky due to their defensive capabilities and Alabama's road vulnerabilities. Ben humorously used a stuffed elephant as a "sign" to pick Kentucky. Purdue vs. Oregon Odds: Purdue +2.5 (underdogs at Oregon). Analysis: Big East Ben (5:26–7:00): Skeptical of Purdue despite their six-game winning streak, citing weak competition and poor interior defense (219th in two-point defense). Believes Oregon, with their superior interior presence (Biddle), can exploit Purdue's weaknesses. Griffin Warner (7:00–8:16): Highlighted Purdue's defensive shortcomings post-Zach Edey and their struggles with road travel. Warner aligned with Ben's pick of Oregon to win. Arizona vs. Texas Tech Odds: Arizona +4.5 (underdogs at Texas Tech). Analysis: Big East Ben (8:17–10:59): Acknowledged Arizona's resurgence after early struggles, including their seven-game winning streak. Criticized Texas Tech's inconsistent season but noted their potential for a strong finish. Ben backed Arizona, citing their road success and motivation to prove themselves. Griffin Warner (11:00–12:19): Contrarily, Warner favored Texas Tech, referencing their improvement and the potential of United Supermarkets Arena to be an intimidating venue. Skepticism about Arizona's consistency led him to pick Texas Tech despite noting Arizona's talent. Clemson vs. Pittsburgh Odds: Clemson +3 (underdogs at Pittsburgh). Analysis: Big East Ben (14:01–16:19): Pointed to Pittsburgh's desperation after three consecutive losses and questioned Clemson's road form (losses to Boise State, South Carolina, and Louisville). He picked Pittsburgh due to their home advantage and greater motivation. Griffin Warner (16:20–17:22): Supported Pittsburgh as well, citing Clemson's vulnerability on the road and turnovers. Creighton vs. Connecticut Odds: Creighton +7.5 (underdogs at UConn). Analysis: Big East Ben (17:23–19:57): Avoided a direct side pick, favoring the under (146 points). Cited UConn's lower-scoring games since an injury to McNeely and Creighton's tendency to force UConn into difficult shots. Griffin Warner (19:58–21:23): Agreed on the under, noting Creighton's away-game struggles and potential foul trouble for key players. Advised bettors to wait for line movements before making picks. Best Bets Big East Ben: Georgia +6 against Auburn. Noted Auburn's lack of key player Janai Broome and Georgia's offensive rebounding strength (11th nationally). Highlighted Georgia's improved home atmosphere. Griffin Warner: Kentucky -2 against Alabama. Backed Kentucky's home-court advantage and superior matchups against Alabama's three-point heavy offense. Conclusion The hosts wrapped up by highlighting their perfect best-bet record from the prior week and promoting merchandise and subscription discounts. The episode maintained a mix of humor and detailed basketball insights. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

To fully understand this current reading “crisis” (which really isn't a crisis at all), it must be seen in the context of similar “crises” occurring in the past (which weren't really crises either). This current “crisis” is not the first reading crisis to come along (Aydarova, 2024; Berliner & Biddle, 1995; McQuillan, 1998; Thomas, 2024), and it certainly won't be the last. And when this crisis runs its course, there will be a lull followed by another crisis, and then another, and then another. That's because there will always be those willing to create the illusion of crises for political and economic gain (Altwerger, 2008; Aydarove, 2023). And sadly, it's an effective tactic … for a time anyway.
We have reached game week, friends! Ohio State will kick off its highly-anticipated 2024 season in just five days against visiting Akron (3:30 p.m. ET; CBS). On today's show, Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle are going to make five predictions for the Buckeyes' season (including one that involves OSU and college football teams in general). The predictions will stem from these questions from Biddle: 1. Barring injury, will Tegra Tshabola start every game for the Buckeyes this season? 2. What post-regular-season honors, if any, will Will Howard earn? (Examples, All-Big Ten first/second/third/fourth-team, Heisman winner/finalist, All-American, etc.) 3. Who will lead Ohio State in rushing and how many yards will they have? 4. Who will lead the Buckeyes in sacks and how many will they have? 5. Name the 12 teams that will make the College Football Playoff, beginning with the champions of the Power 4 conferences. And then Rubin will add five predictions of his own. That and much more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to today's episode of "The Power of Discovery," where we delve into the transformative potential of embracing the unknown. Today, we're privileged to sit down with Karen Golden-Biddle, an award-winning researcher whose work shines a light on the oft-overlooked leadership capacity of discovery.Karen's groundbreaking research in organizational ethnography reveals the profound impact of cultivating a practice of discovery within leadership. But what does it mean to be an organizational ethnographer? It's not about observing from afar; it's about immersing oneself in the everyday lives of people within organizations, experiencing their joys, struggles, and challenges firsthand.Through her extensive studies, Karen has unearthed the essence of discovery as a dynamic process, not just an outcome. It's about asking the right questions, challenging beliefs, and embracing surprise and doubt. In a world where organizations often prioritize predictability and efficiency, the power of discovery can be overlooked. But Karen's work illuminates its vital role in driving innovation and lasting change.During our conversation, we delve into the meaning of an organization ethnographer. What it's like to work within verses on a topic or organization. How the art of discovery lies in the process not the actual outcome. How the inventive process is emergent and what it is like to shift as a human being when you focus on the relational outcomes. This Day in Legal History: Pivotal LGBTQ+ Rights DecisionsOn this day, June 26th, in legal history, two pivotal Supreme Court decisions significantly advanced the cause of marriage equality in the United States. On June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court delivered its decision in United States v. Windsor. In a 5-4 ruling, the Court struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which had defined marriage for federal purposes as the union between a man and a woman. Edith Windsor, the plaintiff, had been denied a spousal tax exemption after her same-sex spouse's death, prompting her to challenge the law. The Court held that DOMA's definition of marriage was unconstitutional as it violated the principles of due process and equal protection guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment. This landmark decision allowed same-sex couples to receive the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples, marking a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Two years later, on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court issued another historic ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. In another closely divided 5-4 decision, the Court declared that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right under the 14th Amendment. The case consolidated several challenges from same-sex couples who had been denied the right to marry or have their marriages recognized by their home states. Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority, stated that the right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of the person, and under the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the 14th Amendment, same-sex couples cannot be denied that right. This ruling effectively legalized same-sex marriage across the United States, ensuring that all states must perform and recognize marriages between individuals of the same sex. These decisions on June 26th were monumental in affirming the rights of same-sex couples and dismantling legal barriers to marriage equality, marking significant victories for the LGBTQ+ community and setting precedents for future civil rights advancements.Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson recently surprised defense attorneys with her unexpected votes against criminal defendants, despite her background as a former federal defender. In two cases decided at the end of the term, Jackson broke from her liberal colleagues. She joined the majority in a case broadening expert witness testimony and dissented in another that reinforced the right to a jury trial.President Joe Biden highlighted Jackson's unique experience as a public defender when nominating her in 2022. In Diaz v. United States, a 6-3 decision, the Court sided with prosecutors on expert witness testimony, allowing experts to discuss what most defendants generally know. Jackson joined Justice Clarence Thomas's majority opinion and wrote separately, suggesting the rule could benefit both prosecutors and defendants. In Erlinger v. United States, the Court ruled 6-3 to apply the Apprendi v. New Jersey precedent broadly, requiring juries to decide facts that could increase sentences. Jackson dissented, arguing that Apprendi limits legislative efforts to create fairer sentencing systems. She suggested overturning Apprendi, which surprised many in the defense community given its importance to defendants' rights. Some notable defense attorneys have expressed disappointment in her positions, though acknowledging that public defender views are not monolithic.Justice Jackson Takes Unexpected Positions in Criminal CasesA recent study by Georgetown University's Center on Education and Workforce revealed that law school graduates earn a median salary of $72,000 after debt payments four years into their careers. However, this figure varies significantly depending on the law school attended. Graduates from seven elite law schools, including Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard, have median earnings of over $200,000 after debt. In contrast, graduates from 33 lower-ranking law schools earn $55,000 or less. The report, titled "A Law Degree Is No Sure Thing: Some Law School Graduates Earn Top Dollar, but Many Do Not," shows that law graduates typically leave school with a median debt of $118,500. Columbia Law School offers the highest return on investment with net median earnings of $253,800 after four years, followed by other top-tier schools. These elite institutions account for about 20% of law students and tend to send over half their graduates to high-paying jobs at large law firms.Conversely, 20 law schools have graduates with median net earnings of $50,000 or less after debt payments, including Cooley Law School and Atlanta's John Marshall Law School. The study utilized data from various sources, such as the U.S. Census Bureau and the American Bar Association, to assess employment outcomes, salaries, bar passage rates, and debt. The report underscores a significant disparity in financial outcomes between graduates of top-ranked law schools and those from lower-ranked institutions.Law grads' median earnings of $72,000 after debt show 'vast gulf' in pay, study finds | ReutersLawmakers in the United States are pushing for the first major federal data privacy legislation, the American Privacy Rights Act, which has bipartisan support. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell and Republican Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, aims to establish a national data privacy standard. This would allow individuals to access, delete, and opt out of their data being used for targeted advertising, and would create a national data broker registry. The U.S. has lagged behind other regions like the European Union, which implemented the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018. Industry groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and TechNet, argue that the bill lacks safeguards to prevent states from adding their own regulations, which could complicate compliance for businesses. They advocate for a unified national standard without additional state-level regulations.Privacy advocates, however, contend that the bill would hinder states from addressing new technological developments and responding to emerging privacy issues. They fear that federal pre-emption could stifle the progressive influence of states like California, which often leads in privacy regulations. Ashkan Soltani, from the California Privacy Protection Agency, warned against setting static regulations given the rapid pace of technological advancements.Democratic Representative Suzan DelBene supports the bill, citing the current "patchwork" of state laws as problematic for small businesses. The bill will undergo a markup hearing on Thursday, a crucial step before potentially advancing to a House vote.US lawmakers push for federal data privacy law; tech industry and critics are wary | ReutersA federal judge has ruled that Walt Disney Co. must face an antitrust class action lawsuit filed by 25 subscribers to YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream. The subscribers allege that Disney's agreements with rival streaming TV providers, which included access to ESPN content, restrained trade and led to higher prices. Judge Edward J. Davila of the US District Court for the Northern District of California found that the plaintiffs plausibly alleged Disney's conduct harmed competition in the streaming live pay TV market (SLPTV).The lawsuit claims Disney's agreements prevented other streamers from offering lower-priced bundles excluding ESPN, thus raising subscription costs and protecting Disney-owned Hulu from competition. Despite partially dismissing the initial complaint, the judge allowed an amended complaint to proceed, alleging violations of the federal Sherman Act and state antitrust laws. While the court dismissed claims for damages under the Sherman Act, limiting potential relief to an injunction, it allowed most state antitrust claims to continue, except for those under the Illinois Antitrust Act and Tennessee Trade Practices Act.The decision follows the Justice Department's plans to review a proposed new streaming service by Disney, Fox Corp., and Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. for potential consumer harm. The case, Biddle et al v. Walt Disney Co., continues to highlight concerns over anticompetitive practices in the streaming industry.Disney Must Face Antitrust Class Suit by TV Streaming Consumers This is a public episode. It's Easter Monday, April 1st, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Colorado nurse under investigation for abortion pill reversal treatments Attorneys for a pro-life Colorado nurse practitioner, who says she feels "religiously compelled" to offer abortion pill reversal to women who regret their chemical abortions, argue that the state's investigation into her practice violates her First and 14th Amendment rights, reports The Christian Post. Last Wednesday, Alliance Defending Freedom filed a motion in defense of Chelsea Mynyk's ability to continue providing women with the abortion pill reversal treatment. It involves providing progesterone, a natural hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue, to women who have changed their minds after taking mifepristone, the Abortion Kill Pill, in an attempt to save their pre-born babies. Biden celebrates transgenderism, not Jesus, on Good Friday On Good Friday, the day that Christians express gratitude for the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross in their place, the White House issued a proclamation celebrating men who wear ladies underpants. It was a proclamation for Transgender Visibility Day. But President Joe Biden did not make a proclamation for Good Friday. That day is invisible to the White House, reports Christian talk show host Todd Starnes. Pro-abortion Lieberman hypocritically cited “God, Creator of life” As The Worldview reported on March 21st, former Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut died at the age of 82. Like most Democrats, Lieberman was pro-abortion. In fact, he even voted against the ban of partial-birth abortion, according to an October 2003 New Haven Register article. To his shame, Lieberman said, "I cannot support any bill that restricts this type of abortion procedure if it does not provide an exception for the health of the mother, which this bill does not. I strongly support a woman's right to choose. The decision to end a pregnancy is one a woman must make with her doctor and her god, not with the government." Ironically enough, on December 12, 2012, when Lieberman delivered his farewell speech from the Senate floor, he hypocritically cited his gratitude to God, the “Creator of life and law.” Listen. LIEBERMAN: “My fourth and final term as the United States senator will soon come to an end. As I reflect on that reality, I am, of course, filled with many emotions. But the one that I feel most is gratitude. “Gratitude first to God, Creator of life and law, without Whose loving kindness nothing would be possible.” 5 fastest declining states in America The five fastest declining states in America, according to drops in population, are Hawaii, West Virginia, Louisiana, Illinois, and New York. While West Virginia and Louisiana are run by Republicans in both chambers of the legislature, the other three – Hawaii, Illinois, and New York -- are run by Democratic state legislatures. Dinosaurs and the Bible Does the Bible reference dinosaurs? As I guest host on Generations Radio today, I asked Dr. Daniel Biddle, President of Genesis Apologetics and the executive producer of “The Ark and the Darkness” movie, this question. McMANUS: “Job 40 talks about the ‘behemoth.' Is it a dinosaur?” BIDDLE: “It's so clear from the text that it's definitely a dinosaur. In fact, we know and I'll say for certain what type of species it was. It was undoubtedly a sauropod dinosaur. And we know that for 14 reasons from the text itself, very, very easy clues are in there. For example, it had a tail that swayed like a cedar tree. Well, what animal, living or extinct, ever had a tail that could sway like a cedar tree? “First of all, God said it's the chief of all of my works, meaning it was a biggest, baddest, grandest thing He ever made. And sauropods, according to the fossil record, are the largest creatures ever to walk Earth -- 130 feet long, over 77 tons -- some of them -- huge creatures. God said you can't walk up behind it. Only its Maker can approach it. There's all kinds of clues in there that the behemoth is a sauropod dinosaur.” Biddle asserts that dinosaurs were on the ark. BIDDLE: “All Noah had to do, to obey God to bring the two of every air-breathing, land-dwelling animals onto the Ark, would be to bring about 80 different varieties or 80 pairs of dinosaurs onto the Ark -- pterosaurs theropods, etcetera.” He points to the testimony of cultures worldwide about their encounters with dinosaurs. BIDDLE: “All these different cultures around the world were drawing similar creatures. They always look like dinosaurs. Many of them looking like theropods like, for example, the Raptors or pterosaurs, like these giant flying reptiles. The Native Americans have got stories upon stories of these things that they call the Thunderbirds that would fly down and snatch up their kids.” Listen to my Generations Radio interview at Generations.org/radio. The Christian kicker who won the game And finally, the Michigan Panthers trailed the St. Louis Battlehawks, 16-15, when Jake Bates attempted a 64-yard-long kick, reports Fox News. St. Louis had scored a touchdown and taken the lead on a one-point conversion with 49 seconds to go, and Michigan had no timeouts. But that was plenty of time for Bates and the Panthers. He successfully drilled a 64-yard field goal with just two seconds left to give the United Football League's Michigan Panthers an 18-16 win over the St. Louis Battlehawks on Saturday. ANNOUNCER: “Good snap. Good hold. Line-drive kick. And it is gooooood! A star is born in the UFL. Jake Bates. 64 yards!” Listen to the exchange with Jake Butt, the Fox News reporter. BUTT: “I'm here with Jake Bates. 64-yard game-winning field goal. You said this is your first actual game-winning game kick going all the way back to high school. What was going through your mind when you took the field?” BATES: “I prepared for this moment. I was ready. We had a really good camp. I have the best operation in the [National Football] League. Jordan [Ober] is literally the best snapper I've ever seen. And Brock [Miller] is the best holder I've ever seen. And, you know, just when you have a lot of faith in your guys, man. You know, nothing's impossible with God. He has risen. Easter weekend, man. You know, it's just, it's a really special feeling!” In Matthew 28:5-6, The angel at Jesus' tomb said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Easter Monday, April 1st in the year of our Lord 2024. Meta — Facebook and Instagram's parent company — refuses to provide evidence refuting widespread reports that it's censoring Gaza-related content on its platforms. This week on Deconstructed, technology reporter Sam Biddle joins Ryan Grim to discuss his recent reporting on the efforts of Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., to press Meta for specifics.Grim and Biddle dig into debates blaming the horrifying images coming out of Gaza for turning young people against the war. "When people see images of horrific bloodshed," Biddle says, "when they see bodies blown apart by bombs, that's upsetting to most people. There doesn't have to be any ideology attached." They also dive into how pressures to sanitize Israel's war is being used to ban TikTok, and how X, formerly known as Twitter, is profiting off of government surveillance. If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/give, where your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week.
