Patrick shares stories of his mother and her ability to light up a room whenever she walks in. "She's always herself," beams Patrick. Patrick attributes, her sense of humor to her brothers and he says "she's a little butch, not too feminine."  And all of that and more makes him love his mother even more. "She unadulterated herself. She never code switches or changes her behavior depending on the crowd. She always her most authentic self."Eight years of piano lessons was tough for Patrick. He didn't like the repetitive method that his teacher was using and he was bored. His mom eventually had to ground him for not practicing. But that's when he started exploring with little chunks, the melodies, the notes, breaking things down, playing them backwards and forwards until he absolutely fell in love with playing the piano. Patrick claims that his mom "gave him that space to be able to do that and what a privilege." He also admits that his ADHD was most likely a big part of the problem and today, finds great relief by taking a prescribed medication. Patrick's philosophy "even though life around you is chaos, you can still find an inner calm/inner peace, and my mom has that in spades. She can re-infect a room with her vibrancy so easily. She walks into a room and it lights up.""My mother knows that she's infectious around everybody else and so she's able to kind of manipulate that too to better suit the environment a little bit. She thinks everyone should be themselves, most authentically all the time.Below is the first first email response that I got from Patrick having asked if he'd be interested in joining me on SHLTMM."Hey Jackie. Thanks for reaching out! I love this concept for a podcast. My story fits perfectly for this since she's been a freelance true crime documentary writer for decades and she allowed me to feel confident in that space, just seeing her succeed and talking about the struggles in that space. I had a good role model. And also… she was the one who grounded me if I didn't practice piano lol, and now I'm a professional pianist so… I owe it to her for a lot of who I am today

Greenville, SC is not only a food-focused destination, it is a place that celebrates the active life through its parks and most notably, its Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile walking and biking greenway that connects the city to nearby Travelers Rest, SC. About halfway between the cities, close to mile marker 31 is the Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery. Mary Walsh, along with her co-founder Jac Oliver, began the business in 2011 to provide easier access to local, responsibly grown and sourced food in the area. Neither of them had entrepreneurial experience or had run a grocery store, but they shared a passion for local farmers and artisans and wanted to connect them with people who had an affinity for quality food. Through the years, they've become a powerhouse in the South Carolina food system and have built a brand synonymous with a healthy, active lifestyle. The cafe and grocery is a joyous place filled with bikers stopping off the trail, children playing in the playground, people grocery shopping, tables filling up with a hungry lunch crowd, and fresh breads and pastries coming out of the ovens on the regular.

If Mary Walsh isn't the mother of Canadian comedy, she is certainly its sister. Born and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland, a founding member of the CODCO comedy troupe, Mary went on to co-create the legendary news satire program This Hour has 22 Minutes. There, she created the infamous character Marg Delahunty, a fearless, sword-wielding warrior princess in cat's eye glasses who became the scourge of Parliament Hill. A writer, director and novelist, Mary still lives in St. John's, just down the street from her husband. She spoke to us the day after the 2022 Oscars, when the world was reeling from Will Smith's attack on presenter Chris Rock. This led to an intense discussion about violence, violence against women, against comedians, and against women comedians. We also talk about getting older and getting funnier, sexy politicians and the lack thereof, Mary's unusual upbringing, unconventional marriage, and love of family, We also learn about Milltowns and rainbow blowjobs.

Any business, no matter what size or how old it is, should always be ready for sale. If your business is 'sale ready' you're on the right track for making your business even more successful. Take a cold, clinical and hard look at your business and ask, are we doing the best that we can? If not, what could we do better. Why would someone want to buy us? Why would someone NOT want to buy us? Waterford accountants FitzGerald Power brought brand experts Totem into their business to give it a 'once over' - and lessons were learnt. Colin Byrne, Creative Director with Totem and Stuart FitzGerald, managing partner at FitzGerald Power share their insights about the process and why and how any business would benefit from doing the same.Their 'hires in a heartbeat'. Colin wants business coach Marty Neumeier and Stuart opted for another business coach, his choice was Jim Collins.Mary Walsh is co-founder with husband Shay of what is now Ireland's largest pallet maker. Former banker Mary joined TeamGBS to share her passion for pallets. She even admits on air that she 'LOVES pallets'. So that's a first! Every business has its little quirks and we learn that to make pallets you have to heat them to 56 degrees Centigrade to ensure the death of the dreadful bark beetle. Mary's business was transformed when she entered the 'Going for Growth' programme, run by Paula FitzSimons and she encourages anyone who can, to get involved in that programme. Mary is also volunteer lead entrepreneur on the wonderful Acorns programme that encourages women in rural Ireland to get involved in business and Mary also shares her passion for that. Her 'hire in a heartbeat'? Ryanair's Michael O'Leary - a popular choice amongst TeamGBS members, but he'd have to start at the bottom.Pamela Laird of Moxi Loves and Tammy Darcy of The Shona Project joined TeamGBS to encourage women entrepreneurs to get involved in the Visa (Card) 'She's Next' programme that will give five women led businesses €10,000 in cash each, plus mentoring that last year's winner Tammy, said was absolutely invaluable - opening doors right around the world. The Shona Project is fantastically successful in getting young women to be more confident and the social enterprise is now reaching around the world. Pamela's 'hire in a heartbeat' is Kim Kardashian (but of course!) whilst Tammy wants three hires, Gillian Maxwell, Orlaith Carmody and Michelle Obama (sure, why not?)All tips and insights are brought to you thanks to De Facto Shaving Oil - the world's best shaving oil. We talk about her path towards becoming the Unashamed Alcoholic, how Bobby Ryan and an anonymous letter to the editor started everything. We then move into red flags, the origins of her thought processes surrounding drinking, and sobriety – how it's not discussed in our society and how it's assumed that everyone drinks until someone says they don't. We also discuss normalization as the antidote to shame, how vulnerability strengthens relationships as well as helps to weed out the connections that no longer serve us. The legal profession is broad. There are many options for attorneys when they graduate law school, from practicing law to working in a number of different areas. It's often the case that an attorney will spend most or all of a career without any exposure to certain practice areas. This is the case with us and adoption law. The area is foreign to us in that we have never been involved with an adoption. That changed when good friends of ours adopted twin boys. Seeing their experience, and the joy that the adoption brought to their family, the world of adoption suddenly became much more real. On this episode Scott talks with Mary Walsh Snyder, an attorney who devotes her entire practice to adoptions. Mary is incredibly knowledgable about the world of adoption, and in this wide ranging conversation we talk about "open" adoptions, the best age to tell the child, some common concerns from parents involved in the process, and a good bit about parenting in the world of social media. This was a very enlightening discussion, and Mary is clearly an attorney who has found her passion. Please enjoy our conversation. Twenty-two years ago, Stuart Knight did something courageous, daring and uncommon. He listened to his heart. It told him that too many people were not living up to their potential, and he decided to do something about it. At the ripe age of 24, with no money or experience, he wrote an inspiring theatre show for teenagers. Within a short amount of time, it was picked up by Coca-Cola and toured nationally for three years. From there he decided to become the first Canadian ever to write and star in a musical that he produced in his own loft. No small feat considering he couldn't play an instrument. It became the longest-running play of its kind, and A-list influencers lined up to witness sold-out shows in a theatre Stuart not only built, but also lived in. During that time, some of the world's biggest business leaders recognized Stuart as a visionary who could help their organization reach new levels of success. Since then Stuart has been flown around the world, speaking in places such as Sydney, Malta, Edinburgh, Mumbai, New York, Frankfurt and Las Vegas helping Fortune 500 companies learn what it takes to be the best. As Stuart Knight's success flourished, he wanted to do something that would help raise thousands of dollars for charities around the world and decided to create the Top Ten Event, which is now one of Canada's biggest speaking extravaganzas. The event has quickly grown into one of Canada's must-see events, garnering over 30 million media impressions and has starred such names as Jim Cuddy, Deepa Mehta, Mary Walsh, Steven Page, and two-time Oscar Award Winner Jane Fonda. On top of all of this, Stuart Knight is an award-winning entrepreneur, a critically acclaimed author of two books, an expert panelist on numerous television shows, the host of a hit radio show, has a sought-after podcast, and has over twelve thousand people from around the world tuning in each week to watch his thought-provoking videos online. As a disrupter, thought leader, and maverick, Stuart Knight has inspired over one million people to reach greater success, find deeper joy, and to ultimately boycott what they thought. In this episode, Stuart joins Paul to share his ideas on a number of topics including how to make the best of this COVID19 pandemic.
