Galway County Council has announced details of a new funding scheme for organisations, businesses and communities of Oileáin Árann (The Aran Islands) that are interested in developing projects and initiatives focusing on addressing climate change. €60,000 is being made available through this new pilot Climate Action Fund. Oileáin Árann, consisting of the three islands of Árainn (Inis Mór), Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr, was designated as the Galway County Decarbonisation Zone in the Galway County Council Climate Action Plan 2024-2029. A Decarbonising Zone (DZ) is a chosen area where local authorities and communities work together to reduce the amount of carbon produced by their everyday activities. By looking within the community for ways to live and work more sustainably, these zones can find local solutions to global problems. The main objective of a Decarbonising Zone is to find innovative but achievable ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The fund will support climate action projects in four key theme areas, namely Energy, Travel, Food and Waste, and Local Environmental Action. The fund is now open to applications. Councillor Martina Kinane, Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, celebrated the launch of this Pilot Fund, which she says, "builds upon the remarkable dedication of the communities of Oileáin Árann in the areas of climate action and sustainability". Welcoming the opening of the funding scheme, Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council noted that, "This new fund will hopefully be the start of financial assistance to help our island communities to reduce the use of carbon in their day to day lives. The Fund should also help to empower the communities of Oileáin Árann, cultivating stronger, more sustainable and resilient islands". He added, "The fund will create learnings that can be shared with communities across the County". Uinsinn Finn, Director of Services at Galway County Council acknowledged the existing commitment and strength of community involvement on the islands, who have established a local Comharchumann Fuinneamh to support their goal of increasing the sustainability of their homes and transport while protecting their unique ecosystem. The closing date for applications to the Oileáin Árann Climate Action Fund is Friday 30th May. Further information is available on https://www.galway.ie/en/services/environment/climate/ or from Rebecca Mooney, Climate Action Officer at climateaction@galwaycoco.ie / 091 509302.

Inishmore is the largest of the Aran Islands of Galway Bay in Ireland and is an area consisting of 12 square miles. It is the largest island off the Irish coast with no bridge or causeway to the mainland. One of the most remarkable features of Inishmore island is the Poll na bPéist which translates as the "Serpent's Lair," relating to the legend of a reptilian sea monster from Gaelic folklore. Most of the locals just refer to it as the Wormhole. This is likely the most unusual sight you'll encounter if you ever explore Inishmore. It is truly considered one of Ireland's top hidden gems, because what you will behold is what appears to be an almost perfectly cut giant rectangle into the limestone floor. Is the Wormhole of Inishmore just a natural wonder or is it an artificial creation of the ancients? 2025 PERU &/or EASTER ISLAND TOUR

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an t-aonú lá is fiche de mhí na Nollag. Is mise Oisín Mac Conamhna. In Éirinn, tá an idirbheartaíocht idir Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael agus an Grúpa Réigiúnach Neamhspleách chun rialtas nua a bhunú fós ar siúl. Toghadh Verona Murphy ina Ceann Comhairle Dé Céadaoin, an chéad bhean tofa san oifig údaí i stair an stáit. Is Teachta Dála neamhspléach ó Loch Garman í, agus dúirt sí gur mór an onóir di an ról a ghlacadh. Gheall sí go mbeidh sí cothrom agus stuama, agus gheall sí freisin a cuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú go leibhéal i gcomhréir leis an ról. Dé Máirt, fógraíodh go mbeidh an calafort Holyhead ar Inis Món dúnta go dtí an cúigiú lá déag de mhí Eanáir, ar a laghad, mar gheall ar an dochar a rinne Stoirm Darragh ann. Cuirfidh an dúnadh isteach go mór ar dhaoine ag taisteal abhaile don Nollaig, agus ar an bpost idir Éire agus an Bhreatain. Dúirt urlabhraí ó Chomhlachas Tarlú Bóthair na hÉireann gur géarchéim atá ann, go mbeidh tionchar ollmhór ag an dúnadh ar an tionscal, agus go bhfuil baill dá gcuid ag cailleadh trí chéad míle euro gach seachtain mar gheall air. De ghnáth, téann 60% d'earraí a thagann isteach in Éirinn trí chalafort Holyhead. Tá an rialtas i gcomhoibriú le rialtas na Breataine Bige chun an tionchar a laghdú, agus an trácht a chur ar mhalairt slí trí Fishguard, Learpholl, nó Càrn Rìoghain in Albain. The Aran Islands lie in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. They're made up of Inis Mór, Inis Mearn, and Inis Oírr. People have likely lived on the islands since c. 3000 BCE. Late Bronze Age and Iron Age ruins scatter the islands, alongside old churches and holy wells. After the era of saints and pilgrimages, Elizabeth I unlawfully seized ownership of the islands in 1565 and in 1588, she sold them to the Lynch family. Oliver Cromwell took them back and passed them to his supporters. Absentee English landlords owned the islands until 1922. They boast such fascinating sights as the Wormhole, believed to be the home of a giant serpent, and the remains of the ancient forts. The Aran Islands are also the home of the world-famous Aran sweaters! Let's find out more about saints, ancient forts, and knitting lore in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! In a new TG4 series from IWR Media, Caomhnóirí na Talún, they follow five Irish farmers over the course of a year as they farm with nature. From an extensive suckler farm on Inis Mór island to the karst beauty of the Burren to the dairy heartland of east Cork, ther cameras follow as these farmers create and conserve habitats on their farms, pioneer new ideas and try to find a way to protect wildlife and their living. Irish farmers, trying to balance nature and farming Across the country we've seen catastrophic declines of birds, wild bees and native plants. Even once common birds of our farmland and open countryside like the skylark and kestrel, are now in deep trouble. The intensification of farming and forestry directed by policy and payments over decades, is seen as one of the most significant contributors to these losses - as land use changed, as wetlands and bogs were drained and reclaimed, as pesticide use and chemical fertiliser increased or as grass management changed such as the switch from hay meadows to silage. As more and more land was brought into production, there was less and less space for wildlife. Yet if biodiversity is to improve, if habitat loss can be reversed or even halted, it is across Irish farmland that change will happen. If it's to happen, farmers are the ones who will turn this crisis around. And across the country there's a growing number of farmers who are forging that path and farming with nature. Over the course of a year, our cameras follow five of these farmers as they create habitats like ponds, nettle patches or bee scrapes on their farms. As they let their hedgerows grow, blossom and fruit. As they discover treasure in the fields. As they adopt new farming techniques like mob grazing or no-till to regenerate soil on intensive ground. Or as they keep faith with traditions such as the winterage [winter grazing] that maintain the wildflower beauty of landscapes like the Burren and the Aran islands. All while trying the find a balance between nature and the realities of making a living from farming. The Farmers Pádraic Ó Flaithearta has a small dry stock suckler herd on Inis Mór and like hundreds of farmers across the Aran islands, Pádraic farms traditionally in one of the most unique habitats of machair and species-rich grassland. John Arnold and his wife Mary run a dairy farm in Bartlemy, east Cork and are part of the flagship farmer-led B.R.I.D.E project [Biodiversity Regeneration in a Dairying Environment]. Full-time teacher and part-time farmer Eoin Collins, farms a suckler beef herd with Dad Michael in Kilfenora, Co. Clare where traditional farming practices maintain the rich flora of their Burren land. Journalist and organic farmer Hannah Quinn-Mulligan farms in partnership with her grandmother Catherine on their Limerick farm where Hannah's been increasing habitats and trialing new farming practices to help nature. And outside Maynooth, Norman Dunne, alongside Dad Michael, has switched to a regenerative farming approach which sees him try to rebuild fertility and life in the soil after decades of intensive tillage. Brian talks about the ambitious target to have 1 million electric vehicles on Irish roads by 2030. He also touches on how urban design and planning can have a huge impact on transport modes, through concepts like the 15-minute city. The important point that all groups don't have equal access to sustainable transport also comes up, through issues like the rural/urban divide in access to public transport, as well as the barriers preventing women and girls from adopting cycling.

In life, there is much which seems uncertain to us. Concerning death however, there can be no doubt. It was an honour to speak with funeral director, death-care practitioner and proud Sligo native David McGowan on the topic of death for episode 33 of Blúiríní Béaloidis. Sit with us as we explore attitudes and customs regarding death and dying, from the practicalities and preparations of the corpse, to the wake house and beliefs regarding the departure of the soul. This volume contains some previously published stories in Irish and a story in English, ‘Riders to the Sea', as well as stories and an unfinished novel which remained in manuscript after his death. They tell of island life, its tragedy and humorous moments, the fierce struggle of fishermen and small farmers eking out a living in the face of the elements. O'Flaherty describes his native community sympathetically and wrote from intimate knowledge of social customs, emigration, fishing and wildlife. This collection of short stories by Tomás Ó Flaithearta is prefaced by Seosamh Ó Cuaig and includes an essay on O'Flaherty by his nephew, the writer and well-known Inishmore journalist Breandán Ó hEithir (1930 – 1990). I met Dara Molloy over 20 years ago when we were both at a Céile Dé conference in County Wicklow. I met many great thinkers and spiritual leaders at that conference – many of whom are friends today. That conference gave me a proper introduction to Celtic Spirituality. Dara and his wife were a young couple at the time, living on Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands. Back then, Inis Mór was even more remote than it is today. They had their young son with them. At some point in the conference, I think it was actually a break out session because there were few of us in the room – Dara spoke about living on the island and the hardships of living without modern conveniences (like washing machines). And I recall that one crystal clear moment when he said something that I never forgot. He said, “Inis Mór is my place of resurrection.”     I’ve spent the last twenty years or so, contemplating that concept and what it means. The clip that you heard from Dara during the intro is his definition of a place of I’ve heard the story of St. Gobnait and we shared her story in episode one. Just to briefly recap, St. Gobnait was a 6th century young woman fleeing from some persecutor. She landed in the Aran Islands and set up a monastic community on Inis Oírr (the smallest island). Then she had a vision that she was to go on a journey to find her place of resurrection. She was to journey across Ireland until she found nine white deer grazing. There she would find her place of resurrection. She traveled through the beautiful hills and valleys of west cork and finally found her nine white deer in Ballyvourney. She set up her community there and performed many great works for the local people. They still revere her today especially around her burial site, church ruins and her holy well.     There so many sacred places in Ireland. And Inis Mór has an abundance. Let’s get to the interview with Dara and hear more about the island and places of resurrection. segment 2 – guest interview   Highlights from the Dara Molloy interview ON PLACES OF RESURRECTION [The term Places of Resurrection] came from the Celtic monks. The Celtic monks, I think were very creative and imaginative in the way the they understood scripture. And particularly I think they were interested in images and parables and stories and metaphors because that’s the approach to spirituality that the Celtic monks have always taken. It’s not logical. It’s not analytical. They never became theologians. They more became poets. Part of their whole way of life as spiritual people was to – in their earlier part of life – was to wander … ‘wander for Christ’ they ended up calling it. … This wandering generally didn’t have a focal point. It wasn’t like they were on pilgrimage to place X or place Y. It more that they were allowing the spirit to guide them wherever it led them. And they believed that if they did that authentically that eventually they would find their place of resurrection – that’s what they called it. The place of resurrection would be where they settled down and that would be where they would discover who they were really meant to be, and the work they were meant to do. ON INIS MÓR The best way to describe Inis Mór is that it’s magical. It’s amazing. It’s an experiential place. You might go to a library where you learn something that you might get into your head. But when you come to Inis Mór, you experience something… you can then go off and have a look at your experience and put words on it and give a narrative and so on – which, of course is what I did and what I continue to do – but the island itself has an energy about it which is very light in the sense of “bright”… and it has a depth to it that you can sense especially in the spiritual places. ON HOLY WELLS Our pagan traditions influenced hugely the development of Christianity in Ireland. It’s like a seamless robe that has some threads from the pagan tradition and some threads from the Christian tradition. Doing the “rounds” began in the pagan tradition. So if you take a holy well today, they’re all named in Ireland after a saint… but before Christianity these wells were also sacred places. And for the druids who were the spiritual leaders for these Celtic peoples, the wells were sacred because they marked an entrance into the womb of the earth itself. And the earth was a mother, and she was a goddess. WHAT SURPRISES PEOPLE WHEN THEY COME TO INIS MÓR? When you come to any of the three Aran Islands, they’re quite flat, there are no tree and there isn’t anything to block your view. And what you see are stone walls – everywhere. And I think it’s kind of surprising and shocking to people to see just how many stone walls are, how intricately they’re built, how many different styles there are to building a stone wall, how small the fields are, and just how far they can see in every direction. So when you come to Aran, you get a long distance view of life… Aran is expansive. Getting Married on the Aran Island Thin places and how we can use them. Last weekend I visited the beautiful Island of Inis Mór. There to run the Aer Arann half Marathon for Temple Street, I took the time to speak with gardener Bartley Hernon of Claí Bán Guesthouse and gentleman Padraig O’Ceadaigh of Aer Arann. From seaweed fertiliser to no snow and one week of frost since 1962… that and so very much more all on this weeks SodShow. With an enormous thank you to the amazing staff of Aer Arann, the angels that make Temple Street Childrens Hospital, The wonderful people of Inis Mór and also Joey, Amy and Ella Faherty.
