Welcome to the April edition of the Limerick Lady Podcast. Alternate title: "What gets me goin' about Bóinn". We were joined this month by the brilliant Róisín Ní Ghallóglaigh who recently gave a seminar on the sexist themes within lots of traditional Irish songs that for a long time we've all just kind of... Overlooked, or not known about.  Róisín Ní Ghallóglaigh is an accomplished solo performer, guitarist and composer. She is currently a member of Irish-Estonian trio, Iiri-Eesti Lauluvagi, featuring Anne-Mai Valk and Hanna-Reet Ruul. In 2020, she released her album Red is the Rose, an album of traditional songs, sung unaccompanied. In 2021 she co-produced an animated music video to accompany her song Bóinn - the River Goddess. Róisín has worked with artists Joanna Hyde and Tadhg Ó Meachaire on their album One For The Foxes and has worked on the Songs For Our Children Project and the 1916 Song Project with Aileen Lambert and Michael Fortune. In 2023, Róisín successfully completed her PhD at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. As a solo artist Róisín performs songs from the Irish, English and Scottish tradition alongside her own compositions. She is currently Assistant Professor in Irish Music at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. If you can access it, Róisín's thesis "Sexual Metaphor and Meaning in the Two Irish Language Songs ‘An Binsín Luachra' and ‘An tSeanbhean Bhocht'" is available to read on the University of Limerick library website.  Go see the Brad Pitt Light Orchestra at the Wickham Way in Limerick City, as part of the Comhluadar festival, on the 25th of April, and in Dolans on the 26th of April opening for Carswell & Hope (Ire/US band).  The Limerick Lady is a grassroots movement based in Limerick, Ireland, with a focus on promoting conversation around gender, visibility, gender balance and the arts. It was founded in 2016 by award-winning (and losing) singer-songwriter Emma Langford, who hosts the podcast alongside fellow award-winning (and losing) Limerick woman, theatre-maker and musician Ann Blake. In this episode I sit down with Michael Fortune, to whom ball is literally life. He joins us as the first remote guest of Te Passion Project, which would explain why his audio sounds a bit different to previous guests. He talks about how basketball saved him from going down a path that would’ve trapped him in a life of darkness, and how his athletic talent allowed him not to become a statistic. We discuss his business, Fortunate Hoops, as well the Cook & Fortune Foundation, which was set up to give back to the community and to under-privileged kids in need. Knowing oneself is also a theme that crops up in the episode. The audio cuts out a couple of times in this episode due to some technical difficulties, but I tried salvaging it as best I could. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we had fun recording it.

The Old Hag.Faerie of traditional Irish Faerie Folklore are old and clever, and know how to drive us insane… slowly. The Good People are blamed for very many things, some just, others unjust. So it is, the wise among us know to keep an open mind.In this episode, Kitty lifts the lid on Sleep Paralysis, also known as, Old Hag Syndrome and asks:If the condition of Sleep Paralysis can be explained by science why is it so many people witness the very same ‘Old Hag’?Why does she attack in similar ways? How do we explain the condition when a second person witnesses the attack? Why is it so common to be ‘Hag Rode’ in Newfoundland? To get to the bottom of the mystery, we look at several first-hand encounters as well as witness accounts and ponder why the Old Hag targets particular people to attack while they sleep.Have they offended the Good People in some way? Do Old Hags attach themselves to families, following members of the family wherever they go and attacking for no other apparent reason? As always, Kitty explains why it’s okay to believe in Faeries and invites you to read more stories of encounters with the Good People, share your own story of an encounter, perhaps one handed down through your family, or just an unusual experience.Visit Kitty at:www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.comwww.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleglassonionstories@gmail.comCREDITS:‘The Hag’ Poem. Question 1: From Paul: Heide Martin’s serving trays in the May/June 2018 are beautiful and I have since made a couple. My question is about keeping the bottom boards flat. I cut some walnut that had been air dried for probably 20 years. In an hour or two both boards cupped. I then sequentially tried wetting one side, wetting both sides, soaking in water, soaking in fabric softener, each time clamping the boards to keep them flat and leaving for days and days to dry out. None of these things worked and in the end I ended up using some walnut plywood instead. How do you folks keep wide, thin boards flat? Working with Warped Panels by Christian Becksvoort #205–May/June 2009 Issue Video Series: Veneering Basics by Bob Van Dyke Question 2: From Richard: In reality we all have limited amount of shop time available.  However, if the amount of time you could work on a project was not limited what one piece would you choose to make? A Journey to Bombé - Veteran woodworker Dan Faia plunges into the project of a lifetime by Thomas McKenna #234–July/Aug 2013 Issue Segment: All-Time Favorite Technique Mike: Using pocket holes to quickly make and change full-size mockups Tom: Beveling an edge of a workpiece with a handplane Ben: Riding the back of the blade to start a cut on the edge of workpiece Flawless Curves on the Bandsaw by Michael Fortune #199–July/Aug 2008 Issue Question 3:   From Mark: I have been building furniture full-time for just over a year. Is it legal and/or ethical to build something from the magazine or a video workshop and then sell it? For instance, if a client asks me to build 4 Adirondack chairs, my thought is build them loosely based on what I find at Fine Woodworking, vs. reinventing the wheel with my own design every-time. Is it OK to sell furniture based on FWW articles? by Asa Christiana Question 4: From John: I was reading a FWW article by Steve Latta in issue #241 about draw-bored tenons where he said, “I make pins from riftsawn or quartersawn stock...”. If you’re making dowels, how can it possibly make any difference whatsoever if you use quartersawn or plain sawn boards? I still like Steve Latta, btw.  Keep up the great work, see y’all at FWWlive! Another Woodworking in America has come and gone and it's left a lasting impression. Not just on me but everybody I've talked with who attended. This is like no other woodworking show out there right now. It's not about the vendors, it's not about the lecturers, it's all about the people attending. And I'm willing to admit I was wrong about my fears of the show becoming too big too fast. Even with the introduction of power tool classes and the combining of design seminars with the handtool lectures, Woodworking in America didn't lose it's focus on what today's woodworker wants to learn and more importantly experience, and it's that experience that will keep me and so many others coming back year after year. Even if you missed the deadline for signing up to attend the classes with the likes of Frank Klausz, Jim Tolpin, Roy Underhill, Ron Herman, George Walker and Michael Fortune you can still run into them in the marketplace, and what a marketplace it was too! Imagine all the vendors you've heard the staff of Popular Woodworking go on and on about in article after article regarding the new small manufacturer who's not just selling you a great tool but are using the tools in their own shops too. Still the one thing that blows me away each time I attend, are the attendees themselves. You may arrive alone, plan a quiet weekend of great lectures and maybe buy yourself something nice but after the first class you'll suddenly find yourself having conversations with your fellow attendees as if you'd known each other for years. Don't take my word for it, ask anyone who's attended! In fact, checkout some of the great links we've been putting together from my fellow bloggers and podcasters. Here's a link to a post where we've been adding them so you can get another perspective on the event CLICK HERE. Today's episode contains snippets from a few of my classes on the first day. Including a lecture by George Walker, Chris Schwarz, Michael Fortune and Roy Underhill. Enjoy, I know I did.
