Movie of the Year: 2006BrickThe Brick podcast episode of Movie of the Year arrives just in time to appreciate one of 2006's most audacious genre experiments. Ryan, Mike, and Greg are joined by Pete Wright of TruStory FM to dig into Rian Johnson's neo-noir debut, a film that transplants the hard-boiled world of Dashiell Hammett into the hallways and parking lots of a Southern California high school. Few films from this era take a bigger swing, and fewer still land it this cleanly.About Brick (2006)Brick is a neo-noir mystery thriller written, edited, and directed by Rian Johnson in his feature directorial debut. The film opened in New York and Los Angeles on April 7, 2006, distributed by Focus Features. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Brendan Frye, a teenage loner who pushes his way into the criminal underworld of his high school to investigate the disappearance -- and eventual murder -- of his ex-girlfriend Emily, played by Emilie de Ravin. The supporting cast includes Lukas Haas as the drug kingpin known only as the Pin, Nora Zehetner as the duplicitous Laura, Noah Fleiss as the enforcer Tug, and Richard Roundtree as a vice principal navigating the chaos from the margins.Johnson wrote the first draft in 1997 immediately after graduating from USC School of Cinematic Arts. He spent the next seven years trying to get it made, with every financier asking him to set it in college instead of high school. He ultimately raised approximately $450,000 from friends and family, shot the film in 20 days, and spent three months rehearsing with the cast beforehand. The score -- inventive and deeply atmospheric -- was composed by Johnson's cousin Nathan Johnson using traditional instruments alongside improvised ones including filing cabinets, kitchen utensils, and tack pianos, all recorded on an Apple PowerBook. The film drew on hardboiled classics, particularly the novels of Dashiell Hammett, and won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. It holds an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned three stars from Roger Ebert, who called it a rich source of dialogue and behavior. You can read Ebert's full review at RogerEbert.com. Brick has since become a cult classic and a clear blueprint for Johnson's later work on Knives Out.Find the full cast and crew listing at Brick on IMDb.Guest Panelist: Pete WrightPete Wright is a podcaster, author, educator, and co-founder of TruStory FM, a podcast production network he has built over more than three decades in media. He is based in Portland, Oregon. This Brick podcast episode marks his first appearance on Movie of the Year.Brick Podcast Discussion: Noir in High SchoolThe central creative gamble of Brick is not simply that it applies film noir conventions to a high school setting. More precisely, it applies them without irony. Johnson made a deliberate choice to play every scene completely straight, and the cast follows his lead without a single wink at the camera. Consequently, the absurdity of the premise becomes the engine of the film's tension rather than its release valve. This Brick podcast opens with a foundational question: does the noir-in-high-school conceit actually work? The genre's grammar depends heavily on power asymmetry, corruption, and the lone investigator operating outside institutional structures. High school provides all three. Brendan's relationship with the vice principal mirrors the classic detective's uneasy truce with law enforcement. The Pin's basement headquarters functions as the smoky back room. The femme fatale and the enforcer play their archetypal roles without adjustment.Johnson drew specifically on the novels of Dashiell Hammett -- particularly the Continental Op stories -- and encouraged his cast to read Hammett rather than watch noir films. He wanted the stylistic choices to come from the source material, not from imitation of existing screen adaptations. That decision gives Brick a distinctive texture. Moreover, the dialogue mixes actual period noir slang with invented high school vernacular in a way that creates its own self-consistent world. As Roger Ebert noted, the story never fully clarifies itself while it unfolds, but it delivers a rich supply of behavior and incident along the way.Genre Bending: What the Brick 2006 Film Is Actually DoingBrick belongs to a specific 2006 moment when genre recombination was operating at a high creative pitch. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang had landed the previous year playing similar games with noir self-awareness. Sin City had arrived with a maximalist visual approach to the same source material. Brick chose a third path: minimal budget, straight-faced commitment, and an insistence that the formal constraints of the genre could do meaningful emotional work if you simply trusted them. The genre-bending discussion on this Brick podcast examines how Johnson uses the noir framework not as homage but as architecture. The structure of a hardboiled mystery -- the inciting mystery, the series of contacts, the betrayal, the revelation -- maps onto adolescent social hierarchies with surprising precision. Furthermore, the paranoia endemic to the genre translates naturally into the heightened social surveillance of high school life, where everyone watches everyone and information is currency. The Spaghetti Western and Anime InfluencesJohnson has cited Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns and Shinichiro Watanabe's Cowboy Bebop as visual influences alongside the noir literary tradition. That combination matters, because it explains why Brick never feels purely retro. The film's rhythm and its relationship to violence carry a different energy than classic noir. Notably, Johnson used shoes as a design element for each character, treating footwear as an immediate visual shorthand for who each person is. It's a small detail that reflects how thoroughly he thought through every layer of the film's visual language.Additionally, the score by Nathan Johnson uses invented instruments -- wine-o-phones, tack pianos, kitchen utensils -- to create an atmosphere that nods to classic noir without reproducing it. The result is a film that works as genre exercise, coming-of-age story, and tone poem simultaneously. The Treatment of Women in BrickNoir has always had a complicated relationship with its female characters, and Brick inherits that complication without fully interrogating it. Emily exists primarily as a body -- a mystery to be solved, a loss to be avenged. She drives the entire plot but occupies very little of the film's actual screen time. Laura is more present, but her function remains rooted in the femme fatale archetype: beautiful, manipulative, ultimately revealed as the architect of the tragedy. The Brick podcast addresses this directly. Does Johnson's decision to play the genre completely straight mean he also reproduces its blind spots uncritically? The case for the defense is that Brick is a formal exercise, and the female characters serve genre functions that the film deliberately signals as such. The case against is that signaling an archetype and interrogating it are different things, and Brick largely declines to do the latter. Moreover, the pregnancy subplot -- Emily is pregnant with Tug's child, a revelation that triggers her murder -- adds a layer of consequence to the female characters' bodies that the film handles with notable brevity. It functions as a plot mechanism more than a human reality. The discussion examines how this choice shapes the film's emotional center, which ultimately rests entirely with Brendan's grief and not with Emily's life or Laura's survival.Nevertheless, Nora Zehetner's performance as Laura earns genuine complexity within the constraints the script gives her. The hosts explore whether that performance transcends the archetype or simply executes it with exceptional skill.Rushmore: 2006 It BoysThe Taste Buds carve out space in this episode for a Rushmore segment dedicated to the It Boys of 2006 -- the young male actors whose stars were ascending in that specific cultural moment. Brick arrives at a fascinating point in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career trajectory, before Inception and The Dark Knight Rises made him a mainstream anchor, when he was still operating in the cult-film

Of all of DC's obscure characters outside the Bat family, two of Matt's absolute favorites are the Elongated Man, Ralph Dibny, and his wife, Sue. Inspired by Nick and Nora Charles from Dashiell Hammett's novel, The Thin Man, Ralph and Sue are a bantering, loving couple who solve mysteries. They are, as the kids at one point or another said, couple goals. And ignoring the ignominy of Identity Crisis, Ralph and Sue made it through any problem with a smile, a wink and the twitch of a nose. Being a detective himself, you'd think Batman and Elongated Man team-ups would be mysteries. This week, well, two out of three ain't bad. We read their first meeting in the Silver Age, an early Justice League story and a more recent story where Ralph and Sue team up with one Matches Malone. Museum of Mixed-Up Men! Our month of classic mystery writers continues with Dashiell Hammett - the former Pinkerton operative whose celebrated characters include Sam Spade, the Continental Op, and Nick and Nora Charles. Radio shows based on his sleuths were some of the most popular on radio until Hammett became a casualty of the Red Scare. We'll hear some of his stories recreated for radio: an adaptation of "The Thin Man" from The Lux Radio Theatre (originally aired on CBS on June 8, 1936; "Two Sharp Knives" - adapted for Suspense (originally aired on CBS on June 7, 1945); "The Maltese Falcon" recreated on Academy Award (originally aired on CBS on July 3, 1946); and "The Critical Author Caper" - a loose adaptation of his novel The Dain Curse from The Adventures of Sam Spade (originally aired on CBS on August 15, 1948). Plus, we'll hear an original Hammett radio creation - private eye Brad Runyon - aka The Fat Man in his debut adventure "The Nineteenth Pearl" (originally aired on ABC on January 21, 1946).

John Tefteller and radio historian Dr. Joe Webb are back with another “lost and found” classic: a 1948 episode of The Adventures of Sam Spade. This one was missing for decades until it turned up on an Armed Forces Radio Service transcription disc, and it's based on Dashiell Hammett's short story The House in Turk Street. John and Dr. Webb dig into the behind-the-scenes history, from the show's production quirks and cast lineup to Hammett's rocky relationship with the people adapting his character. SHOW NOTES The Adventures of Sam Spade 1948-05-18 The Girl Called Echs The lead actors: Howard Duff as Spade, Lurene Tuttle as Effie Howard Duff had a long and successful, and sometimes rocky, radio, film, and television career. He was not an expected candidate to become Sam Spade. The then-wife of producer William Spier, Kay Thompson, suggested that he be given better consideration. Thompson was a musical coach at MGM and was an important behind-the-scenes influencer in encouraging stars to appear on Suspense. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Duff Lurene Tuttle was one of the top radio actors of her time. She might be best known for playing Spade's dizzy secretary, Effie, but she appeared in hundreds, if over a thousand, radio roles, often uncredited, in soaps, dramas, westerns, comedies, and other programs. Tuttle had a successful television career, often playing the busybody next-door neighbor, as well as many film roles. The supporting cast of this episode: Jeanette Nolan (Elvira Echs / Eliza), Jay Novello (Sgt. Benson), Lurene Tuttle (Old landlady), Sidney Miller (Doc) , Joe Kearns (Laundry Man / Warren Beeding), John McIntire (Monty), UNKNOWN (Eddy Echs) The title Girl Called Echs is a lampoon of the popular espionage NBC radio series Man Called X. It was often comedic and generally unserious spy drama in spite of the many important and weighty post-WW2 topics at the core of its plotlines. The later popular NBC spy show Dangerous Assignment took things much more seriously. At about the 4:15 mark of this Spade episode, there is a Man Called X not-so-inside joke. Spade says “I am looking for a man called ‘Echs' and I don't mean Herbert Marshall.” The star of that series was Herbert Marshall, indeed, one of the favorite performers for the Suspense series during the time that Spade producer William Spier guided that series to its prominence. Even though Man Called X was an NBC series, numerous actors and writers for Suspense and Sam Spade appeared in that series in supporting roles. When the cast arrived for their rehearsal of this Spade script, they likely all got a good chuckle out of the references. One of the in-joke reasons for chuckling at the title is that in the East and Central time zones NBC schedule, The Man Called X followed the Spade broadcasts! Many regular listeners of NBC  and devotees of both series would have picked up on the joke. So much of the Spade series was tongue-in-cheek with many inside jokes that only the crew and actors detected them. This title and Duff's comment about Herbert Marshall at around the 4:00 minute mark was one that everyone could understand. The plot is partially based on Dashiell Hammett's short story The House on Turk Street. Miller's Crossing (1990) was chosen by supporter Justin, and it stands as one of the most stylish entries in the Coen Brothers' early catalogue. After the breakout success of Blood Simple and the quirky charm of Raising Arizona, the Coens set their sights on the gangster genre, crafting a film inspired by classic Dashiell Hammett novels such as The Glass Key and Red Harvest. Their vision was to make a thoughtful, atmospheric crime drama that combined sharp, layered dialogue with the kind of morally tangled storytelling that would become their trademark. The journey to get there wasn't exactly smooth. Midway through writing, the brothers hit a creative wall so severe they shelved the script and instead made Barton Fink before returning to finish Miller's Crossing. Filming in New Orleans gave the movie its richly authentic period feel, with Barry Sonnenfeld's moody cinematography and Carter Burwell's haunting score elevating the production. While the film didn't set the box office on fire, its craftsmanship and style have since earned it a devoted following and cemented its reputation as one of the Coens' most accomplished works. If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a city of power, deception, and danger… One man navigates the shadows of loyalty and betrayal. From the visionary Coen Brothers comes Miller's Crossing — a stylish, tension-packed journey through the underworld, where every word is a weapon, every glance a threat, and nothing is as it seems. With danger lurking around every corner, alliances are tested, and the rules of the game are rewritten in blood and cunning.Miller's Crossing - loyalty has a price… and betrayal has consequences.Fun FactsMiller's Crossing (1990) was directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, following their cult hit Raising Arizona (1987).The film is considered one of the greatest gangster movies of the 1990s, heavily inspired by Dashiell Hammett's novels The Glass Key and Red Harvest.During production, the Coen Brothers experienced writer's block and paused to create Barton Fink (1991) before returning to finish Miller's Crossing. The title Miller's Crossing refers to the forested setting where some of the movie's most pivotal scenes take place.Cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld gave the movie its iconic noir-inspired look, marking his last collaboration with the Coens before moving on to direct The Addams Family. The haunting score by Carter Burwell is infused with Irish folk influences, including themes based on the traditional piece Lament for Limerick.Despite a production budget of around $10–14 million, the movie only grossed about $5 million at the box office.Over the years, Miller's Crossing has been critically reappraised and is now celebrated as one of the Coen Brothers' finest works. The film is often ranked alongside Coen classics such as Fargo (1996) and No Country for Old Men (2007).Today, it's seen as a masterclass in neo-noir storytelling and has influenced a new generation of filmmakers in the gangster genre.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

In our encore performance from Project Audion this season, Larry Groebe returns again to ask what do you do if you grew up listening the classic dramatic series on the radio, then found a career writing TV comedy for Bob Hope, and now, decades later, you still harbor fond feelings about those radio shows of your youth? Well, if you're Robert L. Mills, you write shows like the one you're about to hear.  It's a takeoff of a certain famous detective whose name sounds awfully similar to OUR show's hero, named Stan Slade. The original "Adventures of Sam Spade" was broadcast in the late 1940s and early '50s. It starred Howard Duff as the detective created by Dashiell Hammett. It was a fun show that never took itself entirely seriously. Mr Mills has nudged his tribute a little further into the toungue-in-cheek -- or should I say toungue in beak? -territory, reuniting the detective with his old adversaries from the Maltese Falcon movie, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Everyone in our cast gets to have some fun with this adventure of Stan Slade, Detective, entitled "The Burmese Penguin Caper".  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Che on My Mind is an impressionistic look at the life, death, and legacy of Che Guevara by the renowned feminist poet and activist Margaret Randall. Recalling an era and this figure, she writes, "I am old enough to remember the world in which [Che] lived. I was part of that world, and it remains a part of me." Randall participated in the Mexican student movement of 1968 and eventually was forced to leave the country. She arrived in Cuba in 1969, less than two years after Che's death, and lived there until 1980. She became friends with several of Che's family members, friends, and compatriots. In Che on My Mind she reflects on his relationships with his family and fellow insurgents, including Fidel Castro. She is deeply admiring of Che's integrity and charisma and frank about what she sees as his strategic errors. Randall concludes by reflecting on the inspiration and lessons that Che's struggles might offer early twenty-first-century social justice activists and freedom fighters.About The Author(s)Margaret Randall, born in New York in 1936, is a feminist poet, writer, photographer, and social activist. After living in Mexico, Cuba, and Nicaragua since the 1960s, she attempted to return to the United States in 1984. Randall had inadvertently lost her U.S. citizenship when she acquired the citizenship of her Mexican husband in 1967. The U.S. government refused to reinstate her citizenship after finding opinions expressed in some of her books to be "against the good order and happiness of the United States." The Center for Constitutional Rights defended Randall, and many writers and others joined in an almost five-year battle for reinstatement of her citizenship. She won her case in 1989. In 1990 she was awarded the Lillian Hellman and Dashiell Hammett grant for writers victimized by political repression. Randall is the author of more than eighty books, including the oral histories Cuban Women Now, Sandino's Daughters, and When I Look into the Mirror and See You: Women, Terror, and Resistance. A documentary, The Unapologetic Life of Margaret Randall, was released in 2001. Randall lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
