Savannah Britt, with $27,000 in student loans, faces potential monthly payments of $250 due to halted forgiveness initiatives caused by court challenges. Her mother also waits on $18,000 in loan forgiveness, as opposition to Biden's plans from Trump and Republicans adds to this uncertainty for millions of borrowers. Financial pressures extend beyond inflation, impacting student debt holders. Student loan cancellation did not feature prominently in the campaigns of Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump criticized Biden for not delivering on forgiveness promises, reflecting a stagnation in addressing student debt. Biden's initial plan to cancel up to $20,000 for borrowers was halted by the Supreme Court, and lawsuits from GOP-led states currently stall a revised version. Despite limited popularity for Biden's initiatives, approximately five million borrowers benefited from existing loan relief programs. It's been almost two years since most borrowers have had to pay their monthly student loan bill. And yet, 93% of them are not prepared to resume payments on May 1, according to a survey of more than 23,000 student loan borrowers by the Student Debt Crisis Center. Once payments restart, the amount due will be largely the same, since interest on most federal student loans was suspended during the government's payment pause. However, the cost of living has dramatically changed. According to the most recent government data, the Consumer Price Index, which measures the costs of consumer goods, is up 7.5% — the fastest annual pace in about four decades. U.S. stock futures moved lower in overnight trading on Sunday as investors grew concerned about the economic ramifications of the fighting between Russia and Ukraine. Dow futures dropped about 450 points. S&P 500 futures fell 2.3% and Nasdaq 100 futures lost 2.7%. U.S. and global equities experienced volatile trading last week as geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated. Early Thursday morning local time, Moscow launched military action in Ukraine. Throughout the weekend, the Russian advance into Ukraine continued. Russian military vehicles entered Ukraine's second-largest city Kharkiv with reports of fighting taking place and residents being warned to stay in shelters. Russian President Vladimir Putin put his country's nuclear deterrence forces on high alert Sunday amid a growing global backlash against the invasion. Ukraine's Defense Ministry said representatives for Ukraine and Russia have agreed to meet on the Ukraine-Belarus border “with no preconditions.” U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude future rose more than 4%to around $95.60 per barrel on Sunday. The April Brent crude futures contract also rose 4% to near $102 per barrel.

President Joe Biden ran on, among other things, student debt forgiveness. It still hasn't happened. The politics of student debt relief are more complicated than it seems on the surface. One poll pegged support at 62%, but the politics of resentment work well on this issue. Many people have already paid their loans off, so they feel jilted. Of course, college is exponentially more expensive these days than it was just a couple of decades ago, but remember: in politics, if you're explaining, you're losing.Joining us to talk about the issue is Cody Hounanian, executive director of the Student Debt Crisis Center joins us to discuss the how and why on the show today.

A conversation around student loan debt has been happening at the margins of American political life for nearly a generation. By 2012, total student loan debt in the United States surpassed one trillion dollars, with the only relief coming from a pause on interest and federal debt collection that began with the pandemic in March 2020. Today, a majority of Americans, nearly 60% of polled voters, support some kind of forgiveness on the nation's now 1.7 trillion dollar student loan debt, and borrowers have benefited from the pause on payments, recently extended to May 2022. That's over two years without a single required payment…and seemingly without a single negative economic consequence. A recent study from the Student Debt Crisis Center also found that nearly 90% of borrowers are not financially secure enough to resume payments.Is it time to pause these payments indefinitely? Is it past time for mass student loan debt forgiveness? While most of the conversations we have at HRP happen at the intersection of the theory and classroom practice of education, today I am joined by Thomas Gokey, Eleni Shirmer, and Jason Wozniak, as they talk to us about their organization, Debt Collective, make the moral, economic, and pedagogical case for debt cancellation, and let listeners know how to join their grassroots movement. (Florida News Connection) - As more than 200 organizations call on the Biden administration to extend the pause on student-loan repayments, some borrowers are finding success through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. The Biden administration's approach to student-loan relief so far has been on improving or expanding a handful of programs that already were on the books, even as advocates press for the campaign promise of canceling $10,000 in student debt per person. Susan Garcia is a professor of the New World School of the Arts at Miami Dade College, who said she was able to see her loans forgiven in the modified program for educators, nurses and public employees who give 10 years of service. "It is $92,000 of payments that are being forgiven, that have been forgiven," said Garcia. "And for me that is, like, incredible because I'm, like, 58 years old, headed toward retirement, I have a 17-year-old son who is looking to go to college and trying to figure out how he's going to do that." Garcia is encouraging others to take advantage of the now-streamlined program which, according to the education department, already has forgiven $2 billion dollars in debt. The pandemic moratorium on federal student loans is set to expire after January 31. Garcia said the student-debt crisis is real. She credited organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers for pushing for reforms to make it possible for her loans to be forgiven, which started out at around $120,000. "Don't get me wrong, it wasn't like I didn't make payments," said Garcia. "I paid over $148,000, mostly interest only since I separated from school." One major change to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program allows all payments by student borrowers to count, regardless of loan program or payment plan. That waiver runs through October of next near.
