Leslie is joined by Amber Miller, Director of the USW's Rapid Response Department, a roughly 30-year tradition of member-driven, issue-based, nonpartisan legislative activism. Amber has been a proud second-generation Steelworker since 1997 where she began her career at Chase Brass and Copper in northwest Ohio. The two discuss how gerrymandering is a clear and present danger to working families, and what can be done to fight back. Gerrymandering allows politicians to redraw district maps in ways that protect their own power instead of reflecting the will of the people, silencing working families and communities of color. From Texas to Missouri, these power grabs undermine democracy, suppress votes, and weaken the voices of everyday citizens. Yet history shows that when working people organize—whether through ballot initiatives or grassroots campaigns—they can push back against partisan manipulation. States like Michigan prove that fair districting is possible, ensuring representatives are accountable to voters rather than corporate or political interests. In this episode, we give focus to the SFPE Foundation – a catalyst transforming how fire engineering research is funded, conducted, and shared globally. In this conversation with Leslie Marshall, Interim Executive Director of the SFPE Foundation, we discover how a relatively small organization has distributed over $1.2 million in grants, scholarships, and research funding since 2021. While the Foundation has existed since 1979, its recent expansion with dedicated staff has accelerated its impact across the fire engineering community worldwide.Leslie reveals the Foundation's unique position in the fire safety ecosystem – while SFPE maintains the gold standard for current practice, the Foundation focuses on emerging topics and future challenges. This forward-looking approach has funded groundbreaking work, such as, in my opinion, landmark David Morissette's research on furniture fire variability, which began with a modest $5,000 student grant but yielded findings that challenge fundamental assumptions in fire modeling. The conversation explores the Foundation's flagship Grand Challenges Initiative, a 10-year collaborative effort addressing four critical areas: energy and infrastructure, resilience and sustainability, climate change, and digitalization/AI/cybersecurity. With over 40 industry and academic partners worldwide, this initiative exemplifies how bringing diverse perspectives together can tackle complex problems that no single entity could solve alone. For researchers, students, and professionals looking to give back to the fire safety community, Leslie outlines multiple pathways for involvement – from financial contributions to volunteering on advisory panels or working groups. The Foundation's commitment to open access ensures all research findings are freely available, maximizing their impact across the field. You can learn more about the foundation on its website here.Additional resources can be found here:The 2026 WUI Summit: https://www.sfpe.org/2026wuisummit/homeThe WUI Handbook: https://www.sfpe.org/wuihandbook/homeGrand Challenges Initiative website: https://www.sfpe.org/gci/home----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. The guest host for today's show is Brad Bannon. Brad runs Bannon Communications Research, a polling, message development and media firm which helps labor unions, progressive issue groups and Democratic candidates win public affairs and political campaigns. His show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET. Brad is first joined by Kate Ackley, a Senior Reporter for Bloomberg Government. The two examine the impending government shutdown, which is set to happen October 1st. Democrats seem less eager to bail out Republicans than they did at the beginning of the current Trump administration, drawing the line at new massive healthcare cuts which would drive up premiums 10-20% for folks with Affordable Care Act health plans. Then, Brad is joined by Dr. Bob Bollinger is the Raj and Kamla Gupta Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They examine the chaos caused at the CDC by RFK Jr. and the Trump administration, and the potentially dangerous new restrictions on who can now receive vaccines. Dr. Bollinger holds joint appointments in International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and in Community Public Health at the JH School of Nursing. He has more than 45 years of experience in international public health, clinical research, and education dealing with such global health priorities as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, dengue, antibiotic resistant infections, COVID-19 and other emerging diseases. Brad is first joined by Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). They discuss her brand new book, "Why Fascists Fear Teachers. Public Education and the Future of Democracy." The book's Publisher, Penguin House, describes it as "A rousing defense of public education as the cornerstone of American democracy, by the woman attacked by the far right as “the most dangerous person in the world” Attacks on schools and teachers have long been a hallmark of fascist regimes: Throughout history, as many dictators rose to power they began banning books and controlling curriculum. Fascists fear teachers because teachers foster an educated and empowered population that can see past propaganda and scare tactics. Fascists fear teachers because they teach young people how to think for themselves. Drawing on history, stories from teachers on the front lines, and decades of experience with America's public schools, Weingarten argues that teaching students to think critically is the key to defeating would-be dictators. She encourages teachers to continue focusing on their vital mission to help young people thrive." The book is available for purchase here: https://sites.prh.com/whyfascistsfearteachers During the second half of the show, Brad is joined by Sara Haghdoosti and she is the Executive Director of Win Without War, a diverse network of activists and organizations working towards a progressive U.S. foreign policy. She details the dangers of militarizing local law enforcement, and what it means for everyday people that the President is willing to position troops in American cities to enforce his own agenda (with Memphis, TN just the latest). Based just outside of Chicago, Sara also speaks to what the local community is experiencing right now as Trump targets the city. Sara also talks about her organization's ‘Know Your Rights Campaign' for military service members that do not want to follow unlawful orders from the Trump administration: https://winwithoutwar.org/win-without-war-launches-notwhatyousignedupfor-org-for-members-of-the-military-during-trumps-authoritarian-crackdown/ Finally, Brad and Sara talk foreign policy, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as the Trump administration's controversial airstrike on a Venezuelan boat that Trump claims contained drug smugglers transporting fentanyl. Randi Weingarten is president of the 1.8 million-member AFT, which represents teachers; paraprofessionals and school-related personnel; higher education faculty and staff; nurses and other healthcare professionals; local, state and federal government employees; and early childhood educators. Brad is first joined by Tim Karr, Senior of Director of Strategy and Communications at 'Free Press,' a nonpartisan organization fighting for your rights to connect and communicate. The pair examines the increasingly disturbing trend of the mainstream media's capitulation to Trump and his administration. This includes a discussion on Free Press's newly created 'Media Capitulation Index,' and a report that Tim authored on the way forward. It's titled, "A More Perfect Media: Saving America's Fourth Estate from Billionaires, Broligarchy and Trump." Then, Brad is joined by Hadar Susskind, President and CEO of 'The New Jewish Narrative." The organization's mission statement identifies their members as "American Jews, deeply rooted in the story of our people and the history of our struggle for peace and justice. In our narrative, peace and justice are the birthright of Israelis, of Palestinians, and of all people." The two discuss the increasingly dire situation in Gaza, where the United Nation's Humanitarian Affairs Office says that food consumption has "declined to its lowest level since the onset of the war." They report that "nearly 90% of households have resorted to extremely severe coping mechanisms to feed themselves, including taking significant risks to obtain food and scavenging from garbage." Gaza health authorities also report that over 200 people have died of starvation since the war began 22 months ago, and that nearly half of them were children. Leslie is joined by Jim Savage, Legislative Representative for the United Steelworkers (USW). The two discuss how the U.S. Dept. of Veterans' Affairs has been understaffed and underfunded for decades, often proving to be a barrier to those who served getting the care they need. However, rather than bolstering this vital lifeline, early on in the Trump administration, amid brutal cuts to a number of federal agencies, it announced that it would eliminate approximately 83,000 positions at the VA. While this was part of a larger effort to gut the federal government in the name of efficiency, as in other areas, there was nothing targeted or strategic about these cuts. Jim explains how the USW and their "Veterans of Steel" group is not only fighting these cuts, but working across the political aisle to promote common sense legislation to further help U.S. military veterans. Follow the USW on Facebook, Instagram and X, using the handle @steelworkers, and visit their website at USW.org. Also, check them out on Blue Sky where their handle is @steelworkers.bsky.social. Leslie is joined by Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), a partnership established by some of America's leading manufacturers and the United Steelworkers union. The pair first discusses a new piece that Scott wrote for 'Industry Week' that finally puts to rest one of U.S. manufacturing naysayers' favorite lines: “Who wants to work in a factory anyway?” Next, they explore what progress has the Trump administration made on all of their attempted trade deals after the White House extended its reciprocal tariff pause to August 1st, with the hope of securing more deals. Third, Scott and Leslie explain why Americans should be pleased about a new 10-year end to 'the de minimis exemption,' a Customs loophole that Chinese e-commerce behemoths like Temu and DHGate had been exploiting. Fourth, Leslie asks Scott about an FTC letter sent on the same day Amazon launched its Prime Day sale this week, which called on the e-commerce giant (and Walmart) to put a stop to false “Made in USA” claims on its website. This comes after Amazon's marketplace has increasingly become a Wild West of products from third-party vendors as it seeks to emulate SHEIN and Temu. Finally, both Leslie and Scott applauded Senator Elissa Slotkin for a recent speech she gave outlining her “Economic War Plan." They also found this particular line from the speech very timely: "As a CIA officer and Pentagon official by training, I believe that the single, greatest security threat to the United States is *not* coming from abroad. It's the shrinking middle class here at home." Leslie Marshall Show - How Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' Affects Student Loans Now and In the Future by Progressive Voices
Leslie is joined by Bruce Lesley, President of First Focus on Children, a bipartisan advocacy organization working to make children the priority in federal policy and budget decisions. Bruce explains how the newly passed 'Big Beautiful Bill' "chooses billionaires over babies, and puts the nation's children in unprecedented peril." Here are just a few ways that the new law will hurt the nation's children: Cuts $1 trillion from Medicaid and CHIP: Medicaid and CHIP provide health insurance to over 37 million children in the United States and Medicaid covers nearly 40% of births. H.R.1 includes the largest funding cuts to these programs in their history and creates administrative burdens, such as lock-out periods and work requirements. Defunds the largest child anti-hunger program: One-in-five children experience food insecurity. This bill cuts food assistance by cutting more than $200 billion from SNAP and places a larger cost share burden on states. This cost shift could cause states to end their programs or limit enrollment. Advocates argue that losing SNAP benefits could also impact free school meals, further risking a rise in child hunger. Leaves children behind in tax policy: This legislation offers an inadequate Child Tax Credit. While some will see an increased credit amount, the increase still fails to keep pace with inflation. Even worse, the new structure keeps more than 20 million children from receiving the full credit and blocks 2.6 million kids from receiving any credit at all. Undermines public schools: H.R.1 creates a new tax benefit for wealthy donors that jeopardizes the future of our public schools. This education voucher tax credit will offer 2-3x the benefit of other non-profit donations, incentivizing donations over other organizations. It is important to note research shows vouchers do not improve academic outcomes and disproportionately benefit families who already send their children to private schools. Threatens the child care workforce: There is already a child care shortage in the country. H.R.1 will make it harder to recruit and train new child care professionals by prohibiting the use of federal student loans for sectors that do not earn over the median high school graduate salary. We must further invest in this profession and work to increase pay for providers, not create additional barriers to building a strong child care workforce. Increases funding for family separation: H.R. 1 dramatically raises funding for immigration enforcement. This funding will lead to increased family separation and detention. These immigration practices disrupt entire communities and are known to create childhood trauma, adversely affecting child health and development. Cancels efforts to address the climate crisis: H.R. 1 eliminates investments in solar and renewable energy leaving our children to deal with greater effects of climate change in the future. This measure comes as kids are experiencing adverse environmental health effects and natural disasters. Forces kids to shoulder our ballooned national debt: H.R. 1 drives up the national debt by $3 trillion in order to give tax breaks to billionaires and industries like gun manufacturers. This bill expects our children to shoulder the cost of these tax breaks when they become adults while stripping them of essential services today. Leslie Marshall Show - A Non-Partisan View on U.S. Tariffs with AAM President Scott Paul by Progressive Voices
Leslie is joined by Megan Salrin and Jimmy O'Donnell of the United Steelworkers (USW). In one of his early acts as president, Donald Trump not only fired National Labor Relations Board General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo but also removed NLRB member Gwynne Wilcox. Firing Wilcox upended nearly 90 years of Supreme Court caselaw and left the NLRB unable to perform its vital mission of upholding workers' rights. During today's episode, Leslie, Megan and Jimmy discuss why workers need a Pro-Labor National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Megan Salrin is the National Coordinator for the United Steelworkers' Rapid Response program, the union's nonpartisan initiative for education, communication, and action on legislative and policy issues affecting USW members. Before this role, she served in USW's Legislative and Policy Department and worked for several Members of Congress from the Midwest. Jimmy O'Donnell is a Legislative Representative for the USW, where he advocates for pro-worker policies related to labor rights, workplace health and safety, clean energy manufacturing, and workforce development. The two discuss: - Why there is no source that Union workers trust more for information about politics than their fellow Union workers - How, despite the massive headwinds Democrats faced in this year's elections, Union voters turned out for Harris by a margin of 57%-41%, a slight advantage over 2020, after months of person-to-person contact focused heavily on pocketbook issues - How, the Union vote, almost single handedly, kept the presidential race close across the Blue Wall and other battlegrounds. It also propelled Democratic Senate candidates to victory in closely contested races - S.T. Redmond's take on the nomination of Lori Chavez-DeRemer for Labor Secretary - His reaction to the selection of Gwynne Wilcox to succeed Lauren McFerran as the new chair of the NLRB - His concern and frustration at House Republicans, President-Elect Trump and Elon Musk forcing the federal government to the brink of a shutdown, and how it would leave so many hard working Americans without a paycheck right before the Holidays In 2022, S.T. Leslie is joined by Kevin Mapp, the USW's International Vice President of Human Affairs. Kevin coordinates bargaining in the union's health care, containers, public sector and ship building sectors. The pair discuss the power of international solidarity in the case of Bridgestone. Multinational corporations operate globally, oftentimes attempting to pit workers in different countries against each other in a race to the bottom on wages and working conditions. Unionized workers, however, understand that the only answer to large-scale corporate greed is global solidarity. - The USW works with global labor federations like IndustriALL and UNI so that they can share information about operations in different countries. - The USW maintains formal strategic alliances with at least six other unions in Australia, Mexico, Germany, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. Nowhere has this been more urgent than in Liberia, where workers on Bridgestone's massive rubber plantation have been struggling for decades to improve their working conditions. Japanese-owned Bridgestone is one of the world's largest tire and rubber manufacturers. It employs more than 125,000 workers worldwide, including approximately 4,000 members of the USW. In Harbel, Liberia, Bridgestone operates the world's largest contiguous rubber plantation, covering some 185 square miles. It's owned by Bridgestone subsidiary, Firestone Liberia, and approximately 7,000 workers reside there with their families. - These workers both live and work on the plantation, buying food from the company store and sending their children to schools run by the company. - The work is difficult, slashing bush, tapping trees, draining latex into metal buckets that weigh 65 pounds each when full, and carrying them long distances to weigh stations. - This latex then goes straight into the North American supply chain, serving as the starting point for American-made tires. In 1990, Terry Renninger, then president of Bridgestone's Liberia operations, said, “The best way to think of it is as an old Southern plantation.” Indeed, in the years leading up to the formation of their union, the Firestone Agricultural Workers Union of Liberia (FAWUL), workers endured what a 2005 human rights lawsuit called “forced labor, the modern equivalent of slavery.” In 2007, workers successfully organized, and since then they've been making incremental progress in improving working conditions on the plantation, though serious problems remain regarding wages, health care, housing, workplace safety, and more. On top of this, in 2019, Bridgestone fired more than 2,000 workers, forcing them instead to work for contractors, doing the same work but earning significantly lower wages without benefits or other protections provided by FAWUL's contract. According to the U.S.-based Solidarity Center: - One of the big benefits they lost was the education promised to their children, who now must walk long distances through difficult terrain to attend classes in open-air classrooms without desks or other supplies. - Workers struggle to afford protective glasses, boots, or gloves. - Living conditions are cramped, and payment for food comes out of workers' paychecks, which can sometimes leave them with zero or negative balances on their pay slips. Since then, these workers have pushed back, with the support of unions like the USW, as well as the Solidarity Center and others. - On Aug. 31, 2024, contractors voted overwhelmingly to unionize and are attempting to rejoin FAWUL. - FAWUL is currently in negotiations with Bridgestone, and one of the key issues is the fate of contractors. The USW has been proud to provide strategic and bargaining support, but the true strength comes from workers themselves who have shown they're willing to take action. The outcome of these negotiations is still not certain, but it's clear that workers – across the world – are strongest when they're united.

Leslie is joined by Roxanne Brown, the USW's International Vice President at Large, who oversees the union's public policy and legislative agenda as well as its political work. She has spent more than two decades advancing policies on Capitol Hill and with regulatory agencies on behalf of USW members. She has extensive experience in manufacturing, environmental and energy policy. The two discuss how Vice President Kamala Harris, and her running mate Tim Walz, have been delivering wins for workers throughout their public service lives. It comes down to values: Working people need a candidate who will fight for them. USW members told their leadership that they most value retirement security, affordable health care, labor laws that support their ability to form Unions and negotiate strong contracts, alongside safe, healthy workplaces, worker-centered trade, and a strong industrial policy that supports American manufacturing. Vice President Kamala Harris, and her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have a strong record delivering on all these issues. Vice President Kamala Harris serves as a crucial part of the most pro-labor administration of our lifetimes, which breathed new life into domestic manufacturing and established the nation's first industrial policy in decades. This includes infrastructure and other investments rooted in strong 'Buy America' provisions. Policies to build stronger, more resilient supply chains. She took charge of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment, breaking down barriers for workers forming Unions. She also walked the picket line with striking UAW workers. Harris was also the tie breaker on a number of key votes that advanced the interests of working families. The USW worked for years to pass the Butch-Lewis Act and protect the pensions of more than a million workers whose retirements hung in the balance through no fault of their own. Not a single Republican voted for the American Rescue Plan, which included Butch-Lewis, but thanks to VP Harris, it passed. Her work as a tie-breaker also enabled the administration's efforts to return the National Labor Relations Board to its mission of empowering working people, rather than serving the interests of wealthy corporations. Even before she was the Vice President, Harris fought for workers. As a Senator, Harris fought for legislation to address workplace violence in health care and social service settings. As California's Attorney General, she cracked down on corporate creed, took on the big banks, and defended vulnerable workers against wage theft. She fought for labor protections and fair wages for agricultural and domestic workers. Harris' choice of running mate also shows that she prioritizes workers and shares their values. Tim Walz was himself a Union educator, who over his career: Paved the way for more workers to have access to paid sick and family leave; Made major strides in protecting workers' health and safety on the job; Improved standards for patients and workers at Minnesota's nursing homes; Strengthened Union organizing and collective bargaining rights; Expanded unemployment benefits and took steps to protect workers from wage theft and other abuses. The choice is clear. Workers need elected officials who will fight on their side, and both Harris and Walz have clear, pro-worker records. You can follow Roxanne on X, where her handle is @BrownRox. Following last week's performance at the CNN Presidential Debate, President Biden is struggling to assure skeptical voters he is still fit to be commander in chief. House Republicans are now trying to compel the Justice Department to turn over the audiotapes of the President's interview with special counsel Robert Hur. These GOP lawmakers are claiming that by withholding the tapes, the White House is trying to cover up President Biden's senior moments. Former South Carolina congressman and host of Fox News' Sunday Night in America, Trey Gowdy, explains why the Republicans voted to hold Attorney General Garland in contempt of Congress and what the consequences may be. Even Democratic leaders cited concerns about the President's poor debate performance, with blue state governors set to speak with the Biden administration this week. Polls conducted since the CNN Presidential Debate show former President Trump gaining ground in the 2024 race. Now, Texas Democrat Rep. Lloyd Doggett has become the first in his party to publicly call for the President to drop out of the race. FOX News contributor and Democratic strategist Leslie Marshall joins to discuss what the President must say to calm the worries at his governors meeting and how Democrats should handle calls for President Biden to bow out of the 2024 race. Leslie is joined by Maria Somma, Organizing Director for the United Steelworkers (USW). The pair explores why workers still need the PRO Act. This includes white collar workers, which Maria shares multiple examples of with the audience. Workers in the South are also eager to exercise their rights, though this is drawing backlash from anti-worker politicians in states like Georgia and Alabama. The Biden administration has done important work to correct course at the NLRB, and there are pro-worker provisions in recent investments, which are helping smooth the way for workers to have a voice on the job. This includes extensive new requirements for infrastructure projects to be “made in America” as part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Known as the Build America, Buy America Act (BABAA), this section of the law promises to stimulate American manufacturing and create jobs for American workers by ensuring that a substantial portion of BIL funding is used to purchase U.S.-made products and materials. However, workers still face an uphill battle when it comes to forming unions. The solution is to finally pass comprehensive legislation that shores up loopholes in our laws and attaches real, immediate penalties to corporations that violate workers' rights. Leslie and Maria share the legislative solution to these issues, which is the Richard L. Trumka Protecting the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act). They detail what the law would do, which is: - Establish stronger and swifter remedies to stop employers from breaking the law - Make companies recognize contractors as part of the collective bargaining process so they can no longer continue to whittle down Union membership by subcontracting - Force an employer to reach a first contract in a timely manner with a newly organized group of workers. (No more dragging out first contracts) - Reverse so-called 'Right to Work,' regardless of state laws - Prohibit employers from forcing employees to attend anti-union meetings Recent polls show that support for unions is at a fifty-year high, and having Joe Biden, the only sitting President to walk a picket line, in office has helped workers a great deal. But, it's time for the law to catch up. Maria Somma has been an organizer for her entire career, first as a community organizer, and then as a labor organizer. She started with the Steelworkers in 2001 as a healthcare workers organizer, and became Organizing Director in 2015. The website for the USW is www.USW.org. Leslie is joined by the International President of the United Steelworkers (USW), David McCall. The two explore the topic of restoring the United States' lost shipbuilding capacity. President McCall first details how the USW, alongside four other labor organizations, filed a petition last month requesting the United States Trade Representative (USTR) open an investigation into China's non-market practices as it seeks to dominate the commercial shipping market. Next, Leslie and President McCall discuss how the loss of shipbuilding capacity poses a grave threat to America's national security. The pair also explores how the U.S. loss of commercial shipbuilding capacity has directly resulted in the loss of high-paying manufacturing jobs in the sector and across the supply chain. Finally, President McCall breaks down how the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the danger of relying on foreign manufacturers to supply America's needs. President McCall previously served four years as International Vice President, leading negotiations that delivered wage increases, stronger job security and other gains for tens of thousands of workers in steel, tire and other key industries. McCall, a fourth-generation Steelworker, was born and raised in Gary, Indiana.
