Ep.222 José Parlá (b.1973) creates paintings and multidisciplinary works based on his interest in hybrid forms of abstraction. He draws inspiration from various mediums including music, calligraphy, dance, and the decay of urban architecture and advertisements. His works poetically challenge ideas about language, politics, identity, and how we define places and spaces. Parlá's relationship with mark-making is physical and textural, incorporating the body's gestures into a painterly stream of consciousness composed of areas of addition, erasure, and layering that challenge the status quo of visual culture. Parlá was born to Cuban parents in Miami, Florida, and lives and works out of Brooklyn, New York. He studied painting at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia; the New World School of the Arts, Miami, Florida; and Miami Dade College, Miami, Florida. Through his abstract paintings, the Miami-born, Brooklyn-based artist José Parlá explores themes ranging from memory, gesture, and layering, to movement, dance, and hip-hop culture, to codes, mapping, and mark-making. Coming up in Miami in the late 1980s and early '90s, Parlá spent his adolescence and young adult years steeped in hip-hop culture and an underground scene that involved break dancing, writing rhymes, and making aerosol art. The art form still manifests, in wholly original ways, in his abstract works, which, while decidedly of the 21st century, extend in meaning and method back to ancient wall writings and cave drawings. On the episode, Parlá talks about his recent near-death experience with Covid-19; his activism with the collective Wide Awakes; and how his large-scale murals at locations including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Barclays Center, and One World Trade Center trace back to his early days of painting elaborate wall works with aerosol.Special thanks to our Season 7 sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes: [07:37] Rey Parlá[11:45] Ciclos: Blooms of Mold[12:19] Augustin Parlá[13:13] Curtiss School of Aviation[14:05] José Martí[16:20] “Phosphene” series[18:27] “Polarities” series[18:32] “Breathing” series[23:25] Wide Awakes[23:26] For Freedoms[23:29] Hank Willis Thomas[23:31] J.R.[23:35] Wildcat Ebony Brown[24:28] “The Awakening”[32:04] “It's Yours”[34:17] Snøhetta[34:45] Ghetto Gastro[36:50] Craig Dykers[36:55] José Parlá's Studio[38:20] James B. In her own words...“I read in the Washington Post article about how teen girls are at an increased risk of suicide today,” says Marissa Alma Nick. "Layla, the protagonist of REBEL IN VENUS, I believe may have been written for them, to give them hope, to allow them to feel seen, and to see themselves as their own hero. Possibly, REBEL IN VENUS can inspire them to believe they have a right to unburden themselves from internalized shame, and self-hatred.”In the words of others...The Cuban-German author graduated from the New World School of the Arts, received her BFA from the University of South Florida, and was selected for the Creative Capital Continued Education Program (host: Miami Dade Department of Cultural Affairs). She's moved to Los Angeles straight out of college, and signed to MSA dance agency where she worked as a freelance dancer in various music videos, commercials, tv shows, and movies. Then in 2012, Marissa moved back to Miami to start her own dance-theatre company Alma Dance Theater and became the founding artistic director for the festival: ScreenDance Miami. While in Miami she's been an adjunct professor for the University of Miami's Musical Theater Department and has produced, choreographed, and directed live shows for Art Basel Miami, Faena Miami, Tigertail Productions, Vizcaya Museum, Perez Art Museum, Showfields Miami, and Together Arts.

We went to the same theatre school in Miami, New World School of the Arts. When I started as a freshman she was already a sophomore. We watched all of each other's college plays, and saw each other every day at school. At one point I was also her roommate for a couple of months. Later we lost touch for few years. But since we both are now in LA, we have been able to reconnect, and we both have performed on each other's stand-up shows. After college Sara went to Chicago for several years where she did quite a variety of live theatre, but now she's in LA. She owns a psychology practice with her husband, produces stand-up shows, acts, auditions and also writes. She lives a full life and is fully back in action after taking a break from acting some years ago. A wonderful and warm talk! (Florida News Connection) - As more than 200 organizations call on the Biden administration to extend the pause on student-loan repayments, some borrowers are finding success through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. The Biden administration's approach to student-loan relief so far has been on improving or expanding a handful of programs that already were on the books, even as advocates press for the campaign promise of canceling $10,000 in student debt per person. Susan Garcia is a professor of the New World School of the Arts at Miami Dade College, who said she was able to see her loans forgiven in the modified program for educators, nurses and public employees who give 10 years of service. "It is $92,000 of payments that are being forgiven, that have been forgiven," said Garcia. "And for me that is, like, incredible because I'm, like, 58 years old, headed toward retirement, I have a 17-year-old son who is looking to go to college and trying to figure out how he's going to do that." Garcia is encouraging others to take advantage of the now-streamlined program which, according to the education department, already has forgiven $2 billion dollars in debt. The pandemic moratorium on federal student loans is set to expire after January 31. Garcia said the student-debt crisis is real. She credited organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers for pushing for reforms to make it possible for her loans to be forgiven, which started out at around $120,000. "Don't get me wrong, it wasn't like I didn't make payments," said Garcia. "I paid over $148,000, mostly interest only since I separated from school." One major change to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program allows all payments by student borrowers to count, regardless of loan program or payment plan. That waiver runs through October of next near. However, a survey by the Student Debt Crisis Center found that 89% of fully employed student loan borrowers said they were not financially secure enough to resume loan payments on February first. --- Check out our sponsors at Chase Bank, Ashley HomeStore and Caribbean Apparel clothing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-pugh6/message

A conversation with my longtime friend and playwright of Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, Alexis Scheer. Alexis is one of the most intelligent people I know. She is as kind and caring and compassionate as she is articulate and witty. Her knowledge of herself and her experiences is refreshing and straight-up inspiring. I've wanted to sit down and put microphones in front of our mouths for a long time, but with her play currently running at WP Theatre off-Broadway - now seemed like the perfect time to go deep and break down what this experience has been like. This is Alexis' New York debut as a playwright and it is the very beginning of what I am certain will be a long and incredibly exciting career in this industry. Our conversation starts off with a quick recap of the history of this play and spirals into a dialogue about representation, spirituality, creative fulfillment, trust, relationships, and lands with a recent revelation about the "struggling artist" mentality. I have no doubt that you'll find a plethora of wisdom-nuggets that you'll carry with you. Alexis has a way of speaking about abstract topics in a way that's digestible and easy to grip on to. She inspires me to move through the world with more grace and trust that what I have to say is worth hearing. Alexis was named Rising Theatre Star by Improper Bostonian in the Boston's Best Issue and is currently featured on the Kilroys' List and Remezcla's 8 Exciting Latinx Playwrights. Plays include Our Dear Dead Drug Lord (world premiere Off-Broadway WP Theater/Second Stage; developed at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Off the Grid Theatre, and McCarter Theatre Center; Kilroys' List, featured finalist at HowlRound's LTC Carnaval of New Latinx Work, Relentless Award semi-finalist, Bay Area Playwrights Festival finalist, 50PP's Best Unproduced Latinx Plays, 50PP's Best Latinx Plays for College); Laughs in Spanish (developed at Boston Playwrights' Theatre and San Diego REP), Christina (developed at Cleveland Playhouse; Roe Green Award Winner) and Chosen (BCA She Said Festival, Sanguine Theatre's Playwrights' Week). She is a proud Miami native and New World School of the Arts alum, and holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from The Boston Conservatory and MFA in Playwriting from Boston University. She also moonlights as the Producing Artistic Director of award-winning fringe company, Off the Grid Theatre. The Come Up is a podcast that holds space for honest conversations about the reality of being a growing artist in the entertainment industry today. The myth of "making it" tells us that our happiness and fulfillment is dependent on a specific outcome when the truth is that there is no moment of arrival - the journey is never ending. This podcast will serve as an archive of individual perspectives and a source of inspiration for anyone navigating their own creative path. It's an opportunity to reflect on where we've been, where we're at, and where we're going. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
