Scarborough's Reading Rope highlights the necessity of both word recognition and language comprehension for developing skilled readers. In this episode, I focus on effective vocabulary instruction, a crucial component of language comprehension. I will discuss both implicit and explicit vocabulary instruction methods and their role in enhancing students' vocabulary and reading comprehension.Explicit vocabulary instruction involves directly teaching new words to students, allowing teachers to be intentional about the vocabulary they introduce. In contrast, implicit vocabulary instruction occurs spontaneously during teachable moments and is less structured but natural. However, teaching vocabulary effectively goes beyond knowing word definitions; it requires a deep understanding of instructional strategies. Listen to this episode for ways to effectively teach both implicit and explicit vocabulary in your classroom. The importance of vocabulary instruction is underscored by the Matthew Effect, which suggests that students with a strong vocabulary foundation can accelerate their learning more quickly than their peers with limited vocabulary. A rich vocabulary makes it easier for students to comprehend complex texts, leading to further vocabulary acquisition and improved reading skills. Conversely, students with poor vocabulary face challenges in progressing and understanding new words from complex texts. Therefore, intentional teaching of both explicit and implicit vocabulary is essential to boost students' reading comprehension and overall literacy skills.Join us in the Stellar Literacy Collective Membership: stellarteacher.com/join!Sign up for my FREE private podcast, the Confident Writer Systems Series, here!Sign up for my FREE Revision Made Easy email series here!Follow me on Instagram @thestellarteachercompany. EPISODE 15 It often feels like we are teaching strategy after strategy in hopes that students are able to comprehend what they've read. But what happens once they start putting those strategies to use? With an overwhelming amount of post-its and reading responses piling on your desk, the thought of next steps may be daunting.   I have to admit that I've been guilty of holding reading notebooks hostage at my house and put off tackling each of them all at once. I later realized this was not at all effective, especially for my second graders who couldn't independently read my critiques. That's why getting students involved and providing feedback more regularly is a must! After all, the purpose of writing tasks are for us to see evidence of their thinking and what better way than to hold them accountable?   In this episode I share: 5 manageable systems to review reading responses and provide feedback Ways to get students involved in providing feedback When and how to incorporate feedback into your day   Resources mentioned in the episode: Sticky note templates for student feedback FREEBIE Reading Response Activity Bundle Episode 14: Reading Response Ideas to Reenergize Independent Reading Time    Connect with me: Join my newsletter My TPT store stellarteachercompany.com Instagram: @thestellarteachercompany Facebook: The Stellar Teacher Company   For full show notes and more resources, head to stellarteacher.com/podcast/episode15.

How the “Big Five” Tackles Student Reading Fluency with Dr. Victoria Locke & Dr. Bill Fahle of Istation

Reading is one of the hardest skills to learn in early development. Any parent or teacher can attest to the struggle students go through on their journey to reading fluency and comprehension. So, what is the secret to successfully teaching English in schools? Guests Dr. Victoria Locke, director of research at Istation, and Dr. Bill Fahle, SVP of development research at Istation, attest that the science-backed method of the “Big Five” is the solution to student and teacher struggles. MarketScale’s EdTech Podcast dives deep into this education strategy, unpacking how the “Big Five” foundations for reading can help every student become a proficient reader. In 1997, the National Reading Panel distilled years of research and studies into the groundwork for the “Big Five,” a series of steps that evolve to fluency: Phonemic Awareness Phonics Fluency with text Comprehension Vocabulary Like scaffolding, Dr. Locke said, the steps build upon each other, starting first with the early skill of phonemic awareness. Perhaps the most standout feature of the “Big Five” is its ability to cater to each individual student. “(The) Big Five helps to meet students where they are,” Dr. Locke said. An adaptive assessment test determines the student’s level of understanding in each individual step, resulting in a custom overview of a student’s weaknesses and strengths. Dr. Fahle explains how a computer algorithm curates the test as the student is taking it, measuring their ability on a highly customized level. Grounded in science, it’s clear the Big Five carries weight. With proper support from the school system and adequate teacher training, the Big Five can have a successful implementation in any school.

Now more than ever, teachers have a lot on their plate. In addition to the regular responsibilities of lesson planning and grading, additional pressures to foster classroom community, focus on student wellness, increase standardized test scores, and keep up with the competitive Instagram teacher community can leave anyone feeling stressed and pulled in many different directions. But Melissa wants to help teachers feel more in control, helping them use their time more effectively by offering high quality, research-based curriculum products and actionable advice so teachers no longer just get by but truly thrive in the classroom each and every day. Melissa is the curriculum designer behind Teacher Thrive. Melissa explains how her foray into curriculum design happened organically, long before she had even heard about TeachersPayTeachers and while she was very much in the trenches of the classroom herself. What was a gig to craft curriculum for her district ended up aligning with her stage of life all the better, and Melissa has never looked back. Now, Melissa's blog and shop allow her to reach even more teachers, giving them the tools they need inside the classroom and the advice they need to hear. While Melissa has crafted curricula for many different areas, Melissa deep dives into strategies for reading fluency, providing tips that can be immediately implemented no matter what grade level or subject you teach. In this episode, you'll hear, -How your own district may be just the place to start when designing curriculum -Why teacher wellness (and particularly your sleep) play a big role in your success in and out of the classroom -What exactly reading fluency means—and the strategies you can use in your classroom to promote reading fluency Links mentioned: Melissa's website, blog, and ready-made downloads https://teacherthrive.com/ Melissa's Choral Reading freebie download https://teacherthrive.com/2019/10/choral-reading-and-reading-fluency.html
