One major goal in upper elementary education is to help students become fluent readers. But what does that really mean? Fluency goes beyond speed; it encompasses the ability to read words, phrases, and entire sections of text quickly, accurately, and with understanding.Reading fluency serves as the bridge between decoding and comprehension. Strong fluency skills improve both decoding and comprehension because they introduce a level of automaticity. Fluent readers don't need to think about how to read or sound out individual words; they read smoothly and quickly, allowing them to focus more mental energy on comprehension, meaning, purpose, and building knowledge. So, how can we incorporate this knowledge into our classrooms? In this episode, I will share five strategies to build reading fluency with your students. These strategies are practical, fun, and easy to implement. I hope you'll choose one or two of them to implement in your classroom next year.Join us in the Stellar Literacy Collective Membership: stellarteacher.com/join!Sign up for my FREE private podcast, the Confident Writer Systems Series, here!Sign up for my FREE Revision Made Easy email series here!Follow me on Instagram @thestellarteachercompany. The Future of Everything presented by Stanford Engineering

Rebecca Silverman is an expert in how humans learn to read. It's a complex process, she says. First we must connect letters and sounds to decode words in texts. Researchers know a lot about the decoding process and how to teach it. But, beyond that, we must also comprehend what the words in texts are conveying. Comprehension is complex, and researchers know much less about the comprehension process and how to teach it, Silverman tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Episode Reference Links: Rebecca Silverman's Research Lab: Language to Literacy LabConnect With Us:Episode Transcripts >>> The Future of Everything WebsiteConnect with Russ >>> Threads or Twitter/XConnect with School of Engineering >>> Twitter/XChapters:(00:00:00) Introduction to Reading Challenges Host Russ Altman introduces guest Rebecca Sliverman and her research into the complexities of reading.(00:03:53) Decoding vs. Comprehension The breakdown of reading into decoding and comprehension, the challenges associated with each, and the lifelong process of improving these skills.(00:07:18) Variability in Learning to Read  How children learn to read, including the impacts of linguistic comprehension, memory and socio-emotional contexts.(00:09:55) Cross-Cultural Differences in Reading The variability of reading acquisition across languages and cultures, highlighting the components of reading that vary in their developmental trajectory.(00:11:35) Research Challenges and Interventions in Reading Current research on the challenges of reading, particularly in identifying and supporting children with difficulties.(00:15:03) The Role of Technology in Reading The impact of technology on reading, the differences between reading on paper and digital formats, and the potential of educational technology in literacy development.(00:20:38) Importance of Family in Reading DevelopmentHow families play a role in early reading, with emphasis on storytelling and culturally relevant practices. (00:23:52) Challenges for Teachers in Literacy EducationResponsibilities of teachers in teaching literacy and the need for comprehensive support and training for teachers.(00:27:44) Future Directions and the Potential of AI Future research on AI in literacy education, and the importance of human oversight in technological interventions.(00:29:29) Conclusion  Connect With Us:Episode Transcripts >>> The Future of Everything WebsiteConnect with Russ >>> Threads or Twitter/XConnect with School of Engineering >>> Twitter/X

Reading fluency helps students unlock the world, whether they're in kindergarten or a senior in high school. But for far too long, children from specific demographics have struggled to keep pace after moving on from elementary school. To get a handle on how to better address this systemic issue, NWEA conducted a study targeting middle schoolers from historically marginalized or impoverished populations. The findings, according to NWEA Director of Academic Services Laura Hansen, shed light on how certain intervention methods can help students and educators alike close some alarming gaps. Why do young readers vary in reading fluency? The impact of word length and frequency in French 6th graders

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.30.526188v1?rss=1 Authors: Lubineau, M., Potier-Watkins, C., Glasel, H., Dehaene, S. Abstract: Purpose: Which processes induce variations in reading speed in young readers with the same amount of education, but different levels of reading fluency? Here, we tested a prediction of the dual-route model: as fluency increases, these variations may reflect a decreasing reliance on decoding and an increasing reliance on the lexical route. Method: 1,500 French 6th graders passed a one-minute speeded reading-aloud task evaluating fluency, and a 10-minute computerized lexical decision task evaluating the impact of word length, word frequency and pseudoword type. Results: As predicted, the word length effect varied dramatically with reading fluency, with the least fluent group showing a length effect even for frequent words. The frequency effect also varied, but solely in proportion to overall slowness, suggesting that frequency affects the decision stage in all readers, while length impacts poor readers disproportionately. Response times and errors were also affected by pseudoword type (e.g. letter substitutions or transpositions), but these effects did not vary much with fluency. Overall, lexical decision variables were excellent predictors of reading fluency (r=0.62). Conclusion: Our results call attention to middle-school reading difficulties and encourage the use of lexical decision as a test of students' mental lexicon and the automatization of reading. Meanwhile, reading fluency across the nation is lacking proficiency. Considering reading fluency in this current climate may be a serious lack of consideration for these trends in general education.

Lost in the vitriol over phonics instruction was the respect given to or denied to fluency as a metric to pay attention to.At a basic level, fluency is a reader's ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. If comprehending what they read is the goal, children must be able to read fluently. This is true in reading aloud and in reading silently. How the “Big Five” Tackles Student Reading Fluency with Dr. Victoria Locke & Dr. Bill Fahle of Istation

Reading is one of the hardest skills to learn in early development. Any parent or teacher can attest to the struggle students go through on their journey to reading fluency and comprehension. So, what is the secret to successfully teaching English in schools? Guests Dr. Victoria Locke, director of research at Istation, and Dr. Bill Fahle, SVP of development research at Istation, attest that the science-backed method of the “Big Five” is the solution to student and teacher struggles. MarketScale’s EdTech Podcast dives deep into this education strategy, unpacking how the “Big Five” foundations for reading can help every student become a proficient reader. In 1997, the National Reading Panel distilled years of research and studies into the groundwork for the “Big Five,” a series of steps that evolve to fluency: Phonemic Awareness Phonics Fluency with text Comprehension Vocabulary Like scaffolding, Dr. Locke said, the steps build upon each other, starting first with the early skill of phonemic awareness. Perhaps the most standout feature of the “Big Five” is its ability to cater to each individual student. “(The) Big Five helps to meet students where they are,” Dr. Locke said. An adaptive assessment test determines the student’s level of understanding in each individual step, resulting in a custom overview of a student’s weaknesses and strengths. Dr. Fahle explains how a computer algorithm curates the test as the student is taking it, measuring their ability on a highly customized level. Grounded in science, it’s clear the Big Five carries weight. With proper support from the school system and adequate teacher training, the Big Five can have a successful implementation in any school.

Now more than ever, teachers have a lot on their plate. In addition to the regular responsibilities of lesson planning and grading, additional pressures to foster classroom community, focus on student wellness, increase standardized test scores, and keep up with the competitive Instagram teacher community can leave anyone feeling stressed and pulled in many different directions. But Melissa wants to help teachers feel more in control, helping them use their time more effectively by offering high quality, research-based curriculum products and actionable advice so teachers no longer just get by but truly thrive in the classroom each and every day. Melissa is the curriculum designer behind Teacher Thrive. Melissa explains how her foray into curriculum design happened organically, long before she had even heard about TeachersPayTeachers and while she was very much in the trenches of the classroom herself. What was a gig to craft curriculum for her district ended up aligning with her stage of life all the better, and Melissa has never looked back. Now, Melissa's blog and shop allow her to reach even more teachers, giving them the tools they need inside the classroom and the advice they need to hear. While Melissa has crafted curricula for many different areas, Melissa deep dives into strategies for reading fluency, providing tips that can be immediately implemented no matter what grade level or subject you teach. In this episode, you'll hear, -How your own district may be just the place to start when designing curriculum -Why teacher wellness (and particularly your sleep) play a big role in your success in and out of the classroom -What exactly reading fluency means—and the strategies you can use in your classroom to promote reading fluency Links mentioned: Melissa's website, blog, and ready-made downloads https://teacherthrive.com/ Melissa's Choral Reading freebie download https://teacherthrive.com/2019/10/choral-reading-and-reading-fluency.html
