Meanwhile, the left is in meltdown mode as ICE begins the largest deportation effort in U.S. history, targeting rapists, murderers, and criminals who don't belong on American soil. And on a lighter note, is Jennifer Aniston really dating Barack Obama? Rumors are swirling, and we're asking the tough questions. Plus, the mystery of Big Mike—where has she disappeared to? Well that happened. So now what? In this all new solo episode, Brendan talks to America, and it answers back, not just in Taco Bell orders. He then goes all in on: The idea of America as a multitude, not a single entity. Donald Trump as a molotov cocktail to everything we know. What this all means going forward. The one thing we CAN'T let this election do to us. And the amazing story of a teacher's list that changed everyone's life. RESOURCESBrendan FitzgibbonsCalm's Silent Ad How to Scream Support the show
In this episode of "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered," Sara discusses a potential third assassination attempt against Donald Trump at Coachella, revealed by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. The accused, a Trump supporter and Instagram follower of Sara, joins to dispute the claims of fake passports and unregistered vehicles, exposing discrepancies in law enforcement's narrative. The conversation shifts to corruption in the sheriff's department, including a $7.5 million judgment and suspected political motives behind the incident. Sara then explores how Venezuelan gangs have taken over apartment complexes in Aurora, Colorado, despite media and fact-checkers like PolitiFact dismissing Trump's warnings. Footage reveals assaults on property management staff, and Sara condemns media lies while highlighting the FBI and Homeland Security's failure to act. Later, Sara welcomes Graham Allen, host of "Dear America," to discuss his documentary on the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in North Carolina. FEMA's delayed response in Republican-leaning areas raises concerns about political bias, especially as PolitiFact issued fact-checks defending the Biden-Harris administration and FEMA. Graham's documentary, available on Dear America Originals YouTube, reveals the true extent of the crisis. Sara and the panel also tackle how the mainstream media mocked Trump for playing music and bobbing his head during a town hall. They point out how the media spun the moment to portray Trump as confused, twisting a lighthearted situation into something negative. Sara was joined by BlazeTV contributor Jaco Booyens, host of "The Bottom Line," and Eric July, founder of Rippaverse Comics. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Imagine leaving your home in Washington, D.C., and moving to Hawaii mere weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Barry Denenberg takes on this thought experiment and a world of family conflict in one of his offerings to the Dear America series. In this episode, we cover the absolute whirlwind that is Early Sunday Morning: The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows, Hawaii 1941. Released on October 1, 2001, Denenberg's novel provides a brutal portrait of a young girl making sense of the attack on the USS Arizona. We talk about how this compares to the Nanea books and Denenberg's unflinching approach to children's literature. Lois Lowry has written more than 40 books. As of this month, she is also featured in half of our 2021 Patreon episodes. This is incidentally very close to the total number of surviving Shakers. Just in time for spring, we read Lowry's Like the Willow Tree, a Dear America journey for the ages. Based on meticulous research at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community, this book features a young diarist named Lydia who loses her parents to the flu pandemic. Though the Shakers initially wreck her plans, Lydia eventually teach her how to bend to the wind. We discuss Shaker controversies, our varying levels of interest in intentional communities, and much more. Like to read along? You can support the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village by purchasing Lowry's book here: https://www.maineshakers.com/product/like-the-willow-tree-by-lois-lowry/ . Our next book (May 2021) is Last Night at the Telegraph Club, a novel by Malinda Lo. Original air date: April 21, 2021
This month, we read A Coal Miner's Bride: The Diary of Anetka Kaminska. This fictional diary was written by Susan Campbell Bartoletti, who doesn't shy away from complex or dark histories. Our lead Anetka marries a miner at age 13 and is a widow by 14. The book builds to the Lattimer massacre, with Anetka narrating her story and the challenges of being young and far from home along the way. Join us as we talk labor history, Loretta Lynn, and the purpose of diaries. Oh, and ... Did we mention how grateful we are for YOU? Original air date: November 25, 2020
. . . .Well, we seem to have not remembered and this story may have tested our patience. In this episode, we re-read the first Dear America book, set on and off the Mayflower in 1620-1621. Protagonist/diarist Remember a.k.a."Mem" experiences a lot of hardship and seasickness in this 1996 ribboned classic. She gets jealous when her friend is the "first" to step on Plymouth Rock and that's just the beginning. In our coverage, we talk about life in the 1600s, the limits of historical fiction, and representations of indigenous life in "pilgrim" stories. Want to learn more re-indigenizing education? This episode is all about Titanic Culture, one of the most important things to hit our little 8 year old brains. Everyone was hopping on the Titanic obsession back in the late 90s, and Scholastic was no exception. Enter Voyage on the Titanic: The Diary of Margaret Ann Brady, R.M.S. Titanic, 1912 (By Ellen Emerson White). Yep, we're finally getting into the Dear America books that were absolutely everything in our childhood. Discussions of topic include: Billy Zane, what it means to be consumptive, and the class dynamics of the Titanic. Plus, the universal truth of Britney Spears' “I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” and how it weaves its way through Young Adult Fiction. Today's episode is Part 2 of our childhood nostalgia retrospective! We each chose a book for each other from a series we loved as kids. Paris remembered reading several books in the Dear America series, so Chris chose Down the Rabbit Hole - The Diary of Pringle Rose for our second nostalgia adventure. We actually found ourselves really enjoying this one, so this week's episode is a completely different experience from last week with The Hardy Boys.

VoicemailSpecial thanks to my daughter, Eva Lord, for providing the voice of America's voicemail message. TisalleeActually, this is my wife, Laura's, story. She went for years believing that Tisallee was America's other name before someone straightened her out in the third grade. Mountains of CaliforniaWhen I was 15, I got to fly across the country to work in the backcountry of the Sierra National Forest with a Student Conservation Association trail crew. I would recommend it to any young person who loves wild places. And while the over-the-top eroticization of the landscape here is hyperbolic, I really did swoon over mountains and waterfalls all summer. I like to think that I was exuberant. My fellow trail crew members, however, usually described me as giddy. AfricaThis is a true story as best as I (and my wife who accompanied me) can remember it. This particular excursion was a kind of "bonus" to a safari that we'd gone on through Kruger National Park. Neither of us had any idea that it was part of the package. But it was as influential in my life as seeing one of the greatest wildlife parks in the world. FarmstandThis farmstand is also a real place, a place that is still just down the road from the town where I now live. Walker Farm is a 250 year old organic farm. Their heirloom tomatoes are amazing. American Poetry"The Gold of Her Promise" is from Maya Angelou's poem "America." "Let America be the dream" is from Langston Hugh's poem "Let America be America Again." Both of these poems manage to celebrate America and indict her at the same time. And they are both beautiful. "I Hear America Singing" is from the eponymous poem by Walt Whitman. The re-imagining of "My Country, Tis of Thee" was written by Libby Roderick, the Alaskan folk singer. Her 1990 album, "If You See a Dream" is passionate and wise and was the soundtrack to my first summer in Vermont. The final track on that album, "America, America" ends with this lyric.

Catherine, Called Birdy has been a surprise hit with our listeners and book club community, and today Chelsey and Sara share their experience with Karen Cushman's award-winning work of middle grade historical fiction. We share what we remember about the book from childhood, why we connected with it more now, and why a book about a girl trying to avoid marriage in the 13th-century feels so relevant today. We also go down a couple of rabbit holes of our own this episode, including a discussion about how we teach and model gender for children and the role of literature in that development. This week's episode is an insightful interview with the writer of Dear America: We've Seen You Naked, Scotty Landes (Workaholics, Ma). In it, Scotty discusses the Politico article his pilot is based on. You can check that out here. He tells us how he wrote a pilot with 9 main characters, the best breaking into the business story we've ever heard, his transition from a reality TV producer to a scripted TV writer and how working in reality made him a better TV writer. Happy Holidays, Dead Pilots Society listeners! Our pilot this month is Dear America, We've Seen You Naked written by Scotty Landes (Workaholics, Who Is America?, Ma). It's a workplace comedy about a group of TSA agents at Chicago O'Hare airport. We think this pairs well with our Episode 25: Airport Marriott written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. Dear America also has a unique origin story in that it's based on a non-existent book. You'll hear all about that and more in Scotty's pre-read interview. This is a great pilot! We know you're going to love it! Dear America, We've Seen You Naked stars Lucas Hazlett (American Princess), Erika Rankin (House Of Lies), Courtney Pauroso (Reno 911! It's A Wonderful Heist), Jesus Trejo (Sullivan & Son), Matt Oberg (Harley Quinn, Veep) Sabrina Jalees (Search Party), Danny Jolles (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Ankur Bhatt (Platonic), Shawn Vance (MVP) Bryce Craver (Limits Of Therapy), Shannon Dee (Hacks, Good Girls, I Love That For You) and Andrew Reich with stage directions. If you'd like to see the video feed for Dear America, you can do so by becoming a Max Fun member for as little as $5 by going to maximum fun.org/join. Eric Bibb has the perfect background for a folk/blues musician. Eric has been recording and touring since 1972 but for many years has lived in Sweden which gives him a different perspective on his homeland. His last studio album was Dear America, released in 2021. Eric will be appearing at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, March 10-13, 2023 (portfairyfolkfestival.com) and doing other dates. I was invited on Graham Allen's show, Dear America, to discuss the modern state of romantic relationships. We have seen how the #MeToo movement has had damning outcomes for many men, who are left timid and afraid because women may interpret men's pursuit and flirting as harassment. Men and women, especially in the context of romance, need to be able to trust each other… but because of Feminism, they can't anymore.
“I feel drawn to using my ability, talent, and platform to fill in some gaps that I feel are being hewn into the historical record… We have to do more than just tap our feet.”We Zoomed from California to Sweden to talk with the great guitarist, singer, and songwriter Eric Bibb. Episode 196 will make you feel almost as many feels as the blockbuster film Titanic did… and not only because it's about a book that covers the same historical territory. In it, Alli and her guest discuss one of the most popular installments in the Dear America series: Ellen Emerson White's Voyage on the Great Titanic. In spite of the heavy subject matter, the conversation is still a fun one that touches on why young bookworms manage to get away with reading spicy content, global interest in the Titanic, the challenges inherent in building tension in a book with an ending everyone already knows, class, maritime vocabulary, Kate and Leo, survivor's guilt, privilege, and so much more.Kelsey McKinney is a co-founder and owner of Defector Media, author of the novel God Spare the Girls, and host of Normal Gossip. This episode was one for the books! Our 1hr monologue covered a variety of topics from the Astroworld tragedy, the kyle rittenhouse case, death culture in hip hop. Later on we cover our main topic which is a young woman who is in a what some would call a “odd” relationship with a guy who loves porn and strippers more than is actual girlfriend! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/derik-ware/support
