In this episode, we consider what makes for excellent library provision in the secondary school, including ideas for supporting literacy and curriculum delivery. We speak with four experienced and expert school library professionals to glean their advice, ideas and tips for excellent library provision. We discuss the most important elements in effective library provision and why schools should consider employing a qualified librarian as part of their provision. We consider how school librarians can work effectively with teaching staff to support whole-school teaching and learning and ideas for how librarians can engage with colleagues across the school. Of course, we focus on literacy and reading and the role libraries and school librarians have to play, including ideas for library-based initiatives, managing library stock, engaging struggling readers, and boosting reading for pleasure. And it's not just about books, we also consider the hidden roles of a school librarian, including the pastoral side. And we finish with our ideas corner when we ask each of our guests to offer their ideas for library provision that schools can adapt and adopt.

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITWhen principles collide with practicality, where do we draw our moral lines? This episode dives deep into several contentious issues where faith-based values and contemporary social challenges create complex ethical dilemmas. We begin by examining how GiveSendGo, a Christian crowdfunding platform, is defending its decision to host a half-million-dollar fundraiser for a murder suspect's legal defense. While the company's co-founder Jacob Wells admits he isn't "proud" of hosting the campaign, he justifies it as "standing on principle" and "loving people even in the midst of very hard and dark places." This stands in stark contrast to major platforms like GoFundMe that have refused similar campaigns, raising profound questions about where compassion ends and enabling begins. The conversation shifts to public health concerns with an examination of a troubling new study on abortion medication safety. According to research cited, nearly 11% of women taking abortion pills experience serious adverse effects—a rate allegedly 22 times higher than what appears on medication labels. Despite these alarming statistics, FDA leadership appears hesitant to take action, demonstrating how regulatory inertia can persist regardless of changes in political administration. We also explore a Pennsylvania school board's unanimous decision to restore controversial LGBTQ-themed books to school libraries despite previous determinations they weren't age-appropriate. This highlights the continuing tension between parental authority, educational institutions, and cultural representation in our schools. These three issues collectively demonstrate that meaningful institutional change requires more than just new leadership—it demands consistent moral principles that transcend partisan politics. What do you think about these ethical dilemmas? They call him "The Book-Banning Pastor" after he read wildly inappropriate passages from books that were in elementary and middle school libraries. When the school board heard the graphic and wildly inappropriate contents from the "children's book" they forced him to stop and had him arrested. Since then, Pastor John Amanchukwu's mission has been crystallized as he is leading the fight to has these graphic materials removed from the libraries in our children's schools. This fight also included how we got here, how did perverted literature make it's way into our school libraries? Well his new film 22 Words shines a bright light on a host of issues that affect our youth and culture. It began when prayer was removed from school, a secular movement led by atheists to completely removed God from modern society. Pastor John takes us from that fateful day in 1962 all the way to modern times where there are currently 72 genders recognized in woke culture. His fight is to bring back the Christian ideologies and societal structure by which our country was founded on. In this conversation, Karol interviews Erika Sanzi about the topic of schools banning books. Erika argues that the conversation around book banning is misleading, as books are not actually being banned but rather certain books are being excluded from school library collections. She highlights the infiltration of highly ideological books, particularly those related to LGBTQ topics, in school libraries. Erika also discusses the challenges of discussing this issue with different audiences and the need to protect childhood by not burdening children with adult topics. Librarians around the country are currently on a battleground, defending their right to purchase and circulate books dealing with issues of race and systemic racism. Despite this work, the library community has often overlooked—even ignored—its own history of White supremacy and deliberate inaction on the part of White librarians and library leadership. Author Wayne A. Wiegand takes a crucial step to amend this historical record. In Silence or Indifference: Racism and Jim Crow Segregated Public School Libraries (University of Mississippi Press, 2024) analyzes and critiques the world of professional librarianship between 1954 and 1974. Wiegand begins by identifying racism in the practice and customs of public school libraries in the years leading up to the Brown v. Board of Education decision. This culture permeated the next two decades, as subsequent Supreme Court decisions led to feeble and mostly unsuccessful attempts to integrate Jim Crow public schools and their libraries. During this same period, the profession was honing its national image as a defender of intellectual freedom, a proponent of the freedom to read, and an opponent of censorship. Still, the community did not take any unified action to support Brown or to visibly oppose racial segregation. As Black school librarians and their Black patrons suffered through the humiliations and hostility of the Jim Crow educational establishment, the American library community remained largely ambivalent and silent. The book brings to light a distressing history that continues to impact the library community, its students, and its patrons. Currently available school library literature skews the historical perspective that informs the present. In Silence or Indifference is the first attempt to establish historical accountability for the systemic racism contemporary school librarianship inherited in the twenty-first century. Wayne A. Wiegand is F. William Summers Professor of Library and Information Studies Emeritus at Florida State University. Often referred to as “the Dean of American library historians,” he is author of many scholarly articles and books, including Irrepressible Reformer: A Biography of Melvil Dewey; Part of Our Lives: A People's History of the American Public Library; and American Public School Librarianship: A History. “I think it has to do with powerlessness, and with the kind of hierarchy that kids endure every day, where these grown ups are not making sense, and the world doesn't make sense, and animals are basically suffering the same fate.” - Katherine ApplegateWhy do kids see themselves in animals? Children's media is full of stories from and about the perspective of animals. But why? Katherine Applegate has been exploring this question since she was a child, fascinated by the inner worlds of the animals around her. The answer she's come to is hope. Like animals, kids exist in a state of a lack of control over their own lives, which the adults around them essentially dictate. And the greatest antidote to that sense of powerlessness is hope. Teaching that is what she believes to be the true purpose of a children's author. However, holding onto hope can be challenging for kids as they face the harsh realities of our world, feeling powerless in the face of injustice, suffering, and even death. Stories play a crucial role in helping our children build resilience to face these hardships.Katherine Applegate is a prolific and celebrated author best known for the beloved “Animorphs” series, “Wishtree,” “Odder,” and, of course, her Newbery Medal-winning “The One and Only Ivan.” In this episode, she discusses the unique bond between kids and animals, including her early stint as a gerbil peddler!

School districts all over Oregon are struggling to find the money to fund vital services with declining budgets. Many of those districts are making cuts to library staff, which librarians say has a direct result on educational outcomes for students. They also say these cuts are also in direct opposition to the educational goals districts say they’re committed to —  providing tutoring, research help and safe spaces for students experiencing bullying or isolation. Furthermore we discuss the truly despicable nature of the books that can be found in public school libraries, many encouraging transgenderism and the sexualization of children.Christin Bentley sheds light on the progress made in Texas with the passing of HB900, which offers a toolkit for auditing and removing unsuitable books from school libraries. We'll also ponder over how to take action at and beyond the local level. Christin's compelling perspective will inspire you to step up and make a difference in your local community.Support the show
