After the death of a loved one, we often feel compelled to say something. But, what to say? Lacking rich words of consolation, we fall back on platitudes, motivational quotes, and spiritual soundbytes only to discover our words ring hollow. Nothing, it seems, lessens the pain. In this episode, Christianity Today's editor-in-chief Daniel Harrell and author Clarissa Moll discuss how we can deliver hope that actually helps in the face of heartbreaking loss. Daniel and Clarissa talk about why acknowledging mystery brings comfort and how grief shifts as time passes. They share their own wrestling with faith in grief and how after loss, love infuses our lives with hope. If you're wondering how to walk with a loved one experiencing loss, this conversation will offer you practical insights for becoming a companion in sorrow. If you're grieving, you'll find understanding and encouragement as you press forward into your new life. Pat and Tammy McLeod, Harvard Cru chaplains and authors of Hit Hard: One Family's Journey of Letting Go of What Was – and Learning to Live Well with What Is, share their story of ambiguous loss and their 12-year journey to discover hope in the midst of tragedy. Today you are going to hear an incredibly powerful story. I'm with Pat and Tammy McLeod who have written the book Hit Hard, One Family's Journey of Letting Go of What Was and Learning To Live Well With What Is. And I could not put it down.In the fall of 2008 Pat and Tammy's son Zach collapsed on a high school football field; and sustained a severe brain injury. And they were faced with the devastating reality that things would never be the same for their beloved son. I really wanted to have them on the show because each one of us has experienced grief and losses in our lives and yet I've found that we often don't know how to deal with our grief, pain, and losses - it can be a complex and lonely journey - one that we want to avoid at all costs. In this interview, you will hear Tammy and Pat's journey of how they have walked and continue to walk through ambiguous loss. I was so drawn to both of them - their faith and honesty. I felt like I was on sacred ground and I believe you will feel the same too when you hear what they have to share.Where to find and connect with Tammy and Pat McLeod:Their book: Hit Hard, One Family's Journey of Letting Go of What Was and Learning To Live Well With What IsTheir website: https://patandtammymcleod.com/Their COVID Conversations: https://patandtammymcleod.com/covid-19-conversations/.......Check out our Moms of Tweens and Teens website HERESign up for our Moms of Tweens and Teens newsletter HERE. My guests this week are Pat and Tammy McLeod. They shared about their family’s experience of loss and healing, which they describe in their book Hit Hard: One Family's Journey of Letting Go of What Was—and Learning to Live Well with What Is (affiliate link). You’ll hear them describe in this episode the traumatic brain injury that nearly killed their son when he was sixteen years old, and dramatically changed his life, and his family’s. We discussed the pain of ambiguous loss: when we have a loved one on one level, but don’t have them on another. And we talked about where Pat and Tammy find hope and comfort. I know you’ll take a lot from this discussion, as they describe the many challenges they’ve been through, and the strength they found to meet every one.
Life hit Pat and Tammy McLeod hard when their son Zach collapsed on a high school football field; he had sustained a severe brain injury. This accident led the family into the world of ambiguous loss. Ambiguous loss is a loss that occurs without closure or clear understanding. This kind of loss leaves a person searching for answers, and thus complicates and delays the process of grieving, and often results in unresolved grief. “Type One: Occurs when there is physical absence with psychological presence. This includes situations when a loved one is physically missing or bodily gone. Type Two: Occurs when there is psychological absence with physical presence. In this second type of ambiguous loss, a loved one is psychologically absent—that is, emotionally or cognitively missing.
