In The Patty Duke Show and the American Sixties: Hot Dogs and Crêpes Suzette (Oxford UP, 2026), the first ever published on The Patty Duke Show (1963-66), Caryl Flinn and Dana Polan examine the significance of this classic US sitcom within popular culture and within American society at the time. Child acting sensation Patty Duke plays the all-American Patty as well as her staid British counterpart Cathy, who comes to live with Patty's family in Brooklyn. Far from being a frivolous show, the show's use of twin girls--and their comic antics--offers glimpses into different identities and possibilities to try on, in keeping not only with girls' popular culture of the time but the optimism of John F. Kennedy's Camelot years. At the same time, the series plugged into many of the contradictions of the mid-1960s. It flirted, as much of the US did, with foreign cultures, such as Julia Child's mediation of Frenchness, only to return to and reaffirm core US values. Like Kennedy, who encouraged the country's youth to engage with the world at large, the show gestures towards a cosmopolitanism that, ultimately, retreats into an American-based perspective, as evidenced in the series' preferential treatment of Patty over Cathy--despite the two characters being played by one actor.Drawing on archival research, Flinn and Polan bring to light the show's production background, which has until now been largely lost to history, as well as considering the series's conception, reception, its many tie-in products, and its ongoing afterlife in the decades since its initial broadcast. In so doing, they reveal hidden and overt issues that shaped American culture and ideology of the 1960s. Learn more about your ad choices. Episode Summary: The Age of Victoria continues its 2026 “Famine & Revolution” series by stepping away from the political scandals of Lola Montez and into the microscopic world of a biological invader. In this episode, we begin our deep dive into the “Hungry Forties” by looking at the environmental and material foundations of the era. Using the “Longue Durée” framework of the Annales School, we explore the forces that dictate the fate of civilizations. We examine the “Malthusian Trap”—the point where surging urban populations outstripped the land's ability to feed them—and why the humble potato was both the savior and the Achilles’ heel of the 19th-century economy. Support the Show: This podcast is fiercely independent and relies on listener support to maintain access to academic archives and primary sources. To help us reach our goal of 25 paying patrons this month and keep the history deep, please join the crew at: Patreon.com/ageofvictoria Key Topics Covered: The Annales School & Fernand Braudel: Why history is more than just economics or the work of great people—it is the slow, grinding reality of the “Longue Durée”: climate, biology, and the material systems that constrain human action. The “Biological Invader”: The science of Phytophthora infestans. How a fungus from the Americas managed to cross the Atlantic and “dissolve” the food supply of a continent. The Malthusian Trap: A demographic analysis of the early 19th century. We look at the “tipping point” where population growth finally collided with limited agricultural resources. Urbanisation & The Hinterland: How industrial mega-cities like London and Paris broke the traditional link between people and their food sources, creating a precarious global supply chain. The Chemistry of the Potato: Why the potato was the “perfect” industrial crop—producing more calories per acre than any grain—and why its monoculture became a death trap. The Global “Hungry Forties”: Debunking the myth that the famine was a localized event; tracing the “Pandemic of Rot” as it moved from the USA to Belgium, Prussia, Scotland, and Ireland. Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, spoke with Josh Flinn, Director of Product, Cloud Software at Digi International, about the company's achievement of SOC 2 Type 2 compliance and what it means for channel partners building secure, cloud-based IoT solutions. Digi International is a global leader in cellular connectivity for IoT, delivering secure, reliable connectivity for distributed devices such as remote sensors, smart city infrastructure, vehicles, and industrial systems. Operating as a channel-first company, Digi focuses on helping partners deploy and manage IoT solutions at scale through cloud-based platforms like Digi Remote Manager and Digi Ventus. During the discussion, Flinn explained that SOC 2 Type 2 is a significant milestone because it validates not only Digi's security controls but also the ongoing execution of secure development, auditing, and change management practices over time. For channel partners, this reduces friction in the sales cycle, simplifies security questionnaires, and provides confidence that core components of their solutions already meet rigorous security standards. As Flinn noted, “SOC 2 is not a one-time event—it's an ongoing commitment to secure operations.” The compliance attestation currently covers Digi Remote Manager for Digi 360 router and gateway platforms, as well as Digi Ventus, Digi's managed services cloud platform. Looking ahead, Digi is continuing to invest in security enhancements such as long-term support firmware, eSIM security capabilities, and automated compliance controls, reinforcing its cloud-first approach as partners and customers move toward increasingly distributed, IoT-driven environments.
